Greg Applehoff, a luminary in the consumer electronics world, joins us to share his remarkable journey through the ever-evolving tech landscape. From his early days with Japanese titans like Hitachi and Sony to his pioneering efforts in the MP3 market with iRiver, Greg's career offers a front-row seat to the technological revolutions that have reshaped our lives. Greg reflects on the golden era of physical music ownership and contrasts it with today's ephemeral streaming culture, providing listeners with a rich narrative of change driven by innovation and shifting consumer behaviors. Our conversation then pivots to the storied history of Minneapolis-based Shock Electronics, an influential retailer that transitioned from audio equipment to trailblazing computer sales, laying the groundwork for giants like Best Buy. We also recount the entrepreneurial success of GTI Graphics Technologies Inc., a company that grew to $100 million under the leadership of a visionary entrepreneur. Adding a personal touch, we share our appreciation for Erath Pinot Noir from Oregon's Willamette Valley and discuss our preferences in tequila and mezcal, making for a well-rounded and engaging discussion. The spotlight then shifts to the booming e-bike market, charting its rise from niche interest to mainstream adoption. We explore the role of independent bike dealers and major retailers like Best Buy and Walmart in this burgeoning sector. Key discussions include the vibrant biking culture in places like Bentonville, the green benefits of e-bikes, and the increasing interest from startups. With insights into brand building, innovation, and the critical role of regional retailers, this episode is a treasure trove of knowledge for anyone interested in the future of consumer electronics and micromobility. I discovered podcasts back in late 2004/early 2005, as near as I can remember. The first ones were tech news mostly. TWIT, Morning Coffee Notes, Geek News Central, etc. I quickly expanded my listening to include "subculture" stuff like Evil Genius Chronicles, Random Signal, Geek Fu Action Grip, and the RU Sirius Show, along with geeky faire like Wingin' It, Slice of SciFi. Music stuff came in the third wave, mostly because I was so overloaded with talk podcasts. It wasn't until I got my first iRiver, featuring double-speed play, that I was able to free up enough time to add in music shows as well. The point being, when I first got into podcasting, my heart always lay in the free-form banter shows like Chris Brake's, and up until now, I'd never gotten to do one. Okay, there is a pilot for "Dinner with Geeks" (my infamous GeekLabel meets Dinner for Five concept ... that I will get back to one day) that pre-dates Indy In-Tune by about a month, and I made a couple of appearances on the Free Beer Express, though they were topical shows. This is the first one where we've just turned on the mics with no script, notes, or plans. I think it will take some work and mental preparation before I'm ready to do that on a regular basis.Naturally, this leads to the next set of issues. I have had some tough edit jobs, and I have had some long edit jobs. I think this one wins on both counts. The original raw file for this clocked in a just over three hours, as it was taken from the radio feed from that Saturday night radio broadcast. I then had the unenviable task of whittling down 200 minutes, down to 60. That process began back on January 17, and was just finished about an hour ago. In the end, after playing through the file and only managing to trim out 10 or 15 minutes each time, I finally decided to completely scrap the whole thing, start with a blank file, and just paste bits into it until I had 60 minutes. Believe me, I have every minute of that evening committed to memory, and I'm not convinced these were the best 60, however they were the first 60 that I could easily isolate and cut over. In all, it probably wasn't my funniest night on the air, but it was still a lot of fun. Enough so that you will now be hearing new episodes of the Chris Brake Show (without me ... or at least with me relegated down to a five minute spot) three times a week on Indy In-Tune. Check the page for exact times and they're bound to move around while we find their sweet spot.Links referenced in the show: The Chris Brake Show can be found here: | | | | | Our opening track is Nothing Relevant from , recorded . In the co-host slot is Irish from the , Tuesdays from 8 to midnight on Indy In-Tune Radio. The Chris Brake Show the other Chris Brake, the one who built the world's tallest snowman. John Lee Dumas started his Entrepreneur on Fire podcast in June of 2012 (about a year ago). Fast forward and John now has a podcast that is in the top 5 of business podcasts in iTunes. He is making 18,000 a month, reaching HUNDRED of THOUSANDS of people each month in over 145 countries. He did it using the organizational tools and courage he learned in the Armed forces (he served 13 months in Iraq) and with passion that is infectious. He was consuming a large about of podcasts in the car, but he needed more content. What did he do? He filled his own void by creating the podcast he wanted to listen to. Your Podcasts Downloads Stats All In One Place - Stitcher News [3:00] Stitcher announced that they will "pinging" your media host. In a memo that was sent out they outlined the changes as follows: You should begin to see a change in your stats via your hosting provider dashboard when our iOS update is live in the App Store within the next few days. The magnitude of the change will vary based on the specific show but should be noticeable immediately via your hosting provider’s metrics dashboard. We are also updating the Stitcher Partner Portal to reflect this change. We will keep you posted on timing but anticipate seeing this new Download number included in you Stitcher metrics within the next few weeks. The old Downloads stat, which was measuring actual listens, will still be in the partner portal but relabeled “Listens” This means that we no longer have to login to (for example) Libsyn.com or Blubrry.com (two of the top media hosting companies) and then later also check into Stitcher. This will make is easier to quote numbers to potential sponsors. Congratulations Marcus Couch [7:21] If you are a regular listener of the School of Podcasting then you know Marcus Couch and I go way back to the early days of Podcasting with companies like Mevio, Juice Software, and iRiver recorders. Marcus is an SEO expert and a Wordpress Guru. He wanted to get more traction in the Wordpress World. His goal was to get on to the dashboard of every Wordpress user and this month he landed there. How? By doing what Marcus preaches - creating good content. He has his music show the Scene Zine, and recently became a co-host of Wordpress Plugins A to Z (one of my favorite podcasts). You an now read him on the official Wordpress Tavern blog. Congrats to Marcus. John Dumas of the Entrepreneur on Fire Podcast - Light Up the Sky! [9:02] John Dumas is the passionate podcaster behind the microphone on Entrepreneur On Fire. He is also the author of the Book Podcast Launch, and is now rolling out an inner circle mastermind group call Fire Nation Elite. In today's interview you will get inside the mind of John and see his commitment to his audience. You will see where his drive is to inspire his audience to take action. You will hear how he is building his audience through dedication, commitment, and a determination to build his audience (called "The Fire Nation") one person at a time. John shares what lessons he learned during his 13 months in IRAQ. "It's better to make a good decision now then make a great decision later." John spent $3,000 to hire a personal mentor (Jaime Tardy) and says if you don't have that much to invest in your podcast start up that you could check out master mind or online groups (I'm a big fan of some of the groups on Google+, LinkedIn). A One on one coach can be helpful because of the personalized approach. Mastermind groups (which you might find at meetup.com) may get you in contact with other people and become a networking opportunity. [23:55]Entrepreneur on Fire had 267,000 unique downloads in May of 2013 and June should go over 300,000. [25:25] My favorite part of the interview is when John goes to tell me some new news from Apple. He doesn't say, "This is something my audience doesn't even know yet." He doesn't say "This is something the fire nation isn't aware of." He says "I haven't even told fire nation," and to me it shows how John thinks of his audience as ONE person. John talks about the importance of having an "avatar" of your audience (picture your audience member), and then talk to that person. John asks the same questions to every guest on his show. This accomplishes two things. You know what's coming, and you never know what you're going to get (because each guest answers them differently). John has got some great guests like Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss on his show. How? He caught them when they had books available and were on publicity tours. [35:40]Industry Standard Podcast CPM Sponsors came to John when was seen in the top rankings of iTunes. According to John the industry standard is: $18 cpm (per thousand downloads) for a 15 second preroll at the beginning of your podcast. $25 cpm for a 60 second spot in the middle of your podcast. John in the second quarter of 2013 was getting 8,000 downloads per episode. This calculates to $300 per episode - per sponsor. John had two sponsors per show. This means he was making $600 per episode. John does 30 episodes a month, so he made $18,000 a month. His sponsors are signing up for the third quarter (which shows that podcast sponsorship works). John has his mastermind group that you can join at firenationelite.com John released a book Podcast Launch which is spreading his brand. John is using a Private Facebook group to manage his membership/mastermind group. John's Weekly Schedule Mondays - He had 8 straight interviews on every single Monday. He was up to midnight editing. Tuesday - Wide open. Wednesday - Wide open. Dinner with friends. Thursday - Interviews on other podcasts. Friday - Fire nation elite members. Saturday - Fire nation elite interviews before going to visit family Sunday - Splicing entrepreneur on fire interviews. John Hopson is a pretty cool guy. He has a PhD in experimental psychology, whcih in my books already makes him cool. Then it turns out, his PhD work was done in a lab where they study animal cognition. OK, that is even cooler, as well, the cool kids take animal cognition. Then we got to talking and realized we had read each others' stuff. I know that has nothing to do with game design, but it is, to me, an indication of the serendipitous connections you can make at FuturePlay.Anyway most of you will know John from his work on a little text called "Behavioral Game Design" which applies the psychological literature to game design. See I knew I liked this guy...John gave a keynote at FuturePlay 2007 which I recorded with my little iRiver (this year I will use a Zoom H2 which is MUCH better). So some of the audio is a bit shall we say messy. You will also notice someone (who I will not name...) picking up my recorder and looking at it and you will hear me say "That's my recorder" when she asks what she is holding....John basically described his work at Microsoft, working with various studios to make better games. Tell me that isn't a cool job. This talk should give you an idea of the quality of speaker at the conference.I hope you enjoy John's keynote from the 2007 FuturePlay conference.

With the iRiver in hand we dared to face the crowds at the airports and braved the Golden Corral. Listen to our snippets of sound from our Mega Con adventure. (1:15:08)
We're back with a completely Live Show! We haven't done one of these in 4 shows! That's a record for us, hehe... This live show takes you on Peter Pan's Flight, It's a Small World Holiday, Gadget's Go-Coaster, & Space Mountain! Please note: During the live recording of this audio last weekend, I was having a few technical difficulties with either my iRiver, or my Lapel Mic. So at sometimes there were fuzzy pee-popping noises in the left channel. I edited the worst of these out, which means at sometimes, you'll only hear audio in the right channel. Sorry about any inconvenience this may cause to you!

In this episode of Contrabass Conversations, Jason discusses the gear he is using to record Contrabass Conversations. For this episode he is using: iRiver IFP-899 Sony ECM MS957 (the price has really dropped since I bought it six years ago!) Last episode Jason use the same microphone into his laptop through a Griffin iMic . The results are actually much cleaner into the iRiver than into the laptop. Music played on this podcast: Agnus Dei by double bassist Peter Lawson This is an excerpt from a very interesting piece written by a very creative double bassist. For more information on this and other works by Peter Lawson you can e-mail him at ptklawson@gmail.com. Peter studied with Michael Hovnanian at Northwestern University (Michael now teaches at Roosevelt University) and with Rob Kassinger at DePaul University. He is a great double bassist, a great composer, and an all-around great guy. CORRECTION: Although Peter plays with the Madison Symphony, he is not a member of this ensemble. He won an audition in the past for this organization but had to turn the position down due to scheduling concerns, so although he does perform with this group, he is not a member. Jason discusses several auditions coming up for the double bass. Although there aren't many jobs this month, there are several summer festivals holding auditions: North Carolina School of the Arts Artist/Teacher of Bass beginning Fall 2007 National Repertory Orchestra Audition tour in January and February Festival runs from 6/10-8/5 in 2007 Detroit Symphony Orchestra Orchestra Fellow - 2007-08 Season deadline for tapes: 2/6/07 AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria 7/10-8/11 in 2007 Live auditions 2/25-3/31 in various North American cities taped auditions acceptable Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Audition for Bass 5 per-service position for more information, e-mail hunter@hso.org Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Festival 7/1-8/12 in 2007 Tanglewood Music Center The Boston Symphony Orchestra's Academy for Advanced Musical Study 6/21-8/20 in 2007 apply online New World Symphony National Audition Tour January through March in 2007 apply online Another great program always worth checking out is the Aspen Music Festival and School. This was recorded on my iRiver, first in my hotel at PAX, and then back at home in NC during a thunder storm (we had the computers turned off), but I think there is something wrong with the iRiver because there is this annoying background noise. I'm really sorry about that, and it's quite embarassing, considering that I've only done one show with the new gear.Anyway...In this show, I report on my recent trip to Washington state to attend the Penny Arcade Expo--aka, PAX. I got to hang out with my friend Stuart, and it was a lot of fun, despite the crazy crowds. Highlights of the convention include:Watching Stuart compete in the D&D Open Duel (run by Technomancer Press)Seeing the demo of Guitar Hero IIPlaying Arkham Horror and RuneboundMeeting MC Frontalot and seeing him performSong 1: Miskatonic Massacre - The Von Dooms (courtesy of Reanimator Records)Song 2: Penny Arcade Theme - MC Frontalot (from Nerdcore Rising)I totally meant to get this posted days ago, but even though it's probably too late, look for me (and a ton of other Airwolf podcasters) at Dragon*Con!
Thanks to everyone who commmented about the last show. Well I found out the hard way that the T30 DOES NOT allows you to plug in a microphone to the LINE IN. The line is for plugging in a CD player (or any other line device). Dave's answer was to go to www.ebay.com and buy a refurbished iRiver 899 (total cost 95.11 ) If you're not looking to spend the giant bucks on a Marantz 660 ($500), Roland-Edirol has the new R-09 coming out later this month ($400). Allan Stewart from the Marketers Podcast let me know that new models of Minidisc recorders have the ability to download to a PC. I checked into this an sony has a model MZM100 and it does connect via USB (Click the link and buy a new MZ-M100 from us and receive a free pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones ($99 value) with your order. While supplies last! at samedaymusic.com). Keep in mind that line in does NOT equal mic in. This podcast was recorded over the course of 5 days while on my recent vacation to the Gulf coast of Florida. Cut off from every last one of the internets, all I had was my trusty iRiver - so the sound quality is a little worse than normal. Also, it's long. Clocking in a just over an hour, this show is twice the usual length. You've been warned! Also, my wife Ryn makes her Random Signal debut. For obvious reasons, I had hoped to have this uploaded on May 1. In this 19 Minute show Dave talks the pros and cons of buying an ipod (as he bought one). He compares his 60G iPod to his Rio Carbon, and iRiver 899. The show travels to Colorado where you can hear JVonD and friends taste test Colorado micro beers while listening to recordings taken in Colorado. Its was another first as JVonD took infield iRiver recordings and broadcasted live via Shoutcast from the Residence Inn in Boulder. Listen and view clips from the 800 foot traditional climb up the 2nd Flatiron rock face and the Coors brewery tour. Also meet new friends to the show who stopped by to crown Bristal's Mass Transit ale as the favorite micro brew of the JVonD Radio show. The second half of the show is filled with drunken ramblings with cyber space via skype conferences.

The talky parts were recorded early in the morning on an iRiver, so the sound quality is all over the place. Sorry about that. Only one song today: Leaves Do Fall - The Rosebuds The rest of my interview with 365 Tomorrows' Jared Axelrod. In this part we talk about his podcast, The Voice of Free Planet X, and I play a clip from Episode 4: Welcome To The Hotel Kraken. We also wax a bit philosophical about podcasting in general. This is the most fun I've had recording a show to date! I popped the iRiver and microphone in a waterproof bag (made for cellphones and kayaking) and went to Blizzard Beach! There is a little rustling of the mic/bag, but I think that's ok. After that we went to Epcot.(yes, I'm not alone on this one!) I did something different while riding Spaceship Earth, instead of recording the Jeremy Irons narration, I held the microphone outside of the car so you can hear the background audio. After you've ridden it 1000 times, Jeremy Irons' voice sorta gets ignored and you pay more attention to the surroundings, which is why I did it. I hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we had recording it! Have fun! The other players in this Episode are Melissa (my GF) and Girl #2 who also works at WDW so she'll remain nameless like me. (I need a nickname/handle!) Edit: Apologies to Jeff from Houston!!!! I called him John!
Join me as I venture to Sea World for a quick evening visit! It's my first show outside of WDW, and I was very curious and cautious as to how to handle myself with a microphone. I found that people cared even less there than at WDW, so next time I'll have a bit more fun! while riding Krakken, my battery cover on the iRiver came open so I held on to it with my hand covering the entire device including the microhopne. Oops! Next time I'm using the ext. mic w/ cord.
This week, we had originally planned to bring you an on-location show from Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. It was going to be the first broadcast in our month long CoasterRadio.com Halloween Terror Tour. But it was raining so hard on Saturday that we and Busch Gardens decided it was best for the show (and our equipment) to postpone until next week. But luckily, Kevin and Beth (our correspondents from Ohio) and our friends at the Single Serving of Coke Podcast got a chance to visit Fear Fest at Paramount's Kings Island this weekend. Kevin brought along his iRiver mp3 recorder and recorded this week's show at PKI's Festhaus. Kevin, Beth, Anthony, Coke, Mary and Buddy talked about the atmosphere at the park, reviewed some of the most popular attractions and previewed the upcoming Winterfest Celebration. After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions. You can also record your thoughts on the CoasterRadio.com Voicemail Line at 206-339-RIDE (206-339-7433). Stay tuned, because next week we're recording the show live at Busch Gardens Williamsburg's annual Halloween event - Howl-O-Scream! We'll tell you all about the haunted attractions and shows as well as talk with park guests about the event. Thanks for listening to the show. Let us know what you think by e-mailing us at feedback@coasterradio.com.
Holy cow did this take a long time! After moving into the Vacation Home, I got a chance to take a break from working and went to Epcot for about an hour! Then my iRiver went batty and I lost about 1/3 of my audio. When I salvaged and edited it on THursday night, Audacity crashed just as I was finishing up! Of course I didn't save. So I did it again, and saved often. And here it is for your enjoyment! Have fun!
This week marks the 7th Anniversary of my move to Florida that started my eternal vacation (at least when I'm not working.) So to mark this event, I went to the Magic Kingdom to revisit a few of the things that I did on my very first visit after I moved here. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Note: I realized after I recorded that my iRiver was set to "Mono" so the Visivox microphone didn't record at %100 quality.
