Zig at the gig podcasts

Interview with Jeff Lang 2024 Australian guitarist-songwriter-vocalist-producer, Jeff Lang has built a reputation for making startling music that is accomplished, intricate, gutsy, melodic and loaded with soul. Often taking unexpected turns, he has consistently inspired his audiences by creating a stylistically diverse catalog of over 25 albums. Jeff has mischievously called his music ‘Disturbed Folk.' One writer referred to him as a “quiet achiever.” But the overall impression one has from observing Jeff's lengthy career is that of a driven man who keeps his head down, playing and recording music as if his very life depends on it. Outside of his homeland, Jeff has toured the UK, Europe, Japan, India, China, South Africa, New Zealand and Canada as well as concentrated work in the U.S., where he has played upwards of 300 shows, living there for 6 months at a time. He has appeared on prestigious American radio programs A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage and Acoustic Café. Jeff has shared stages with Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Richard Thompson, Bonnie Raitt, Ani Di Franco, Chris Whitley, Albert Collins, Loudon Wainwright III, Greg Brown, John Butler, AR Rahman and Bob Geldolf, among many others. Jeff has delivered show-stopping performances at festivals all across the globe: The Dublin Blues Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Quebec City Music Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival, Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Echo Park China, Ottawa BluesFest as well as on his home turf at Port Fairy, Woodford, Bluesfest Byron Bay and Womadelaide. Jeff Lang's unique musical vision easily finds a home in myriad settings, from large festival stages to the intimate, long-running Ann Arbor, Michigan club The Ark to the Sydney Opera House. Most importantly, Jeff Lang has achieved what is a rarity in the cluttered world of contemporary sounds: his own voice. Jeff's info https://jefflang.com.au

My guest for this pilot episode is Gale Paridjanian of (the magnificent) Turin Brakes. If you listen to the song Underdog (Save me) by Turin Brakes, it will tell you a lot about how Gale plays and what he brings to a song with his guitar playing. Gale is an underrated and understated guitar god - as all Turin Brakes fans know. Olly Knights, singer in Turin Brakes describes Gales playing as “the real deal since the very beginning", and also “band cheat code” which Gale & I explore further in this conversation. Gale's choice of guitar is a Charvel electric-acoustic model from his days working in the acoustic department of one of the music shops in London's famous Denmark Street, for which he paid something like £469 (roughly £1,200 in today's money). “It's got my sound in it. If you plug it in it just sounds like The Optimist and that's our sound. It's a battle to play but there's something about how it sounds when it's recorded. It sounds like me”. An inexpensive one-off model, in Gales hands, the Charvel became the signature sound for Turin Brakes - Gales says “it feels more honest the more acoustic we are” - and it's true - the band were pioneers of the acoustic-led pop that followed, paving the way for singer-songwriters like Newton Faulkner, even Ed Sheeran. But Gale and the band are on fire, still. His own influences include The Stones, Chuck Berry, Chris Whitley and Derek Trucks. Gale plays some of his own and Turin Brakes fans' favourite pieces - a lot from the band's debut LP The Optimist - and tells stories of the band, his own life as a guitar player and the Charvel he holds dear, even if it is falling apart. Let's hope he gets it serviced soon. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Skirting the edges of stardom, Chris Whitley passed away far too young at 45, but left a catalog of albums more influential than they were ever popular. A wide array of artists, from John Mayer to Joe Bonamassa have lauded Whitley's playing and songwriting, so we're diving into this 1995 sophomore album Din of Ecstasy. Whereas his debut was a slickly produced blues rock album that produced a Top 40 Mainstream Rock chart hit, the follow-up sounds more in line with the happenings of the decade. The big fuzz of Dinosaur Jr. appears on "Din," while a guitar solo on "God Thing" conjures images of Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, as Whitley embraces complex guitar riffs and atmospheric production that sound both of the time and timeless. The only hitch? The album is a slow burn, and a checked-out, background noise listen won't do it justice.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Din 22:21 - God Thing 40:06 - Know 45:20 - Some Candy Talking 59:02 - Never Outro - Narcotic Prayer   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Part 1 of my conversation with guest Phil Stacey about the music of 1995. Show notes: - First show in quite a while - In '95, Phil turned 26, Jay turned 28 - We both saw a lot of concerts that year - Big deaths: Jerry Garcia, Eazy E, Shannon Hoon - Musings on Cleveland, where the Rock Hall of Fame opened in '95 - Jay saw a doubleheader of a Bruins game and a Chris Whitley show - Singles charts were leaning toward pop and lighter fare - Is band loyalty still a thing? - It's okay to not listen to every album in a band's catalog - Phil's non-top 5 albums: Belly, Garbage, Alice in Chains, Mad Season, Phish, Elliott Smith, Radiohead, RHCP, Sonic Youth, Matthew Sweet, Pavement, Ben Folds Five, Morphine, No Doubt, Throwing Muses, Green Day, Natalie Merchant, Son Volt, Smashing Pumpkins - It's a rare double album that can't be cut down to a single album - To be continued   Completely Conspicuous is available through Apple Podcasts. Rather than watching a 20-minute how-to YouTube video for 2 minutes of what you really needed to learn, Chris has created several dozens of short-form, quick-hit practical tips for hunters on the platform.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Happy new year and new decade, music nerds! Malcolm Burn, the wildly creative Canadian producer, engineer and musician joins me on the show this month in a 2-part episode. Malcolm grew up in Ontario and in the 80’s, after trying his hand as an artist in pop bands, turned to producing and engineering in the studio and hooked up with Daniel Lanois through his Hamilton, Ontario connection. Burn, Lanois, and a 3rd Ontarian, Mark Howard, worked as a team on a string of incredibly influential albums including Bob Dylan’s “Oh Mercy”, the Neville Brothers “Yellow Moon”, Lanois’ solo “Acadie”, and Emmylou Harris’ “Wrecking Ball”, an innovative and creative career-changing album for her. Burn went on to produce her next record on his own - “Red Dirt Girl”, as well as classics for Chris Whitley and many others. I’ve always wanted some first-hand info on what that scene was like, recording in non-conventional spaces, the idea of engineering as a team, and many of the unique recording techniques they were working with through their careers. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Malcolm Burn as much as I did having it, and please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review. Part 2 will be out next Wednesday!

Today Joey speaks to Stuart Coupe. When Stuart moved from the northern Tasmanian town of Launceston to Adelaide in the mid-70s he was a representative squash player, with a passion for music, and an unlikely taste for counter culture. It was not long before he fell into the world of music – his own zine roadrunner was a quiet step into a career that would see him come face to face with the likes of Bob Dylan, and Mick Jagger, manage Paul Kelly and the Hoodoo Gurus, and promote acts as varied Chris Whitley, Lucinda Williams, and Harry Dean Stanton. In more recent times he has taken up radio. On Tuesday he hosts Tune Up - a show dedicated to covers - due to that and the many other shows he has hosted over the years he is often referred as the god father of FBi radio.

Kirsten Collins began working with Grammy producers and writers in the beginning of her teen years. Her potential for stardom was evident early on as she was singing on key when she was less than 2 years old. She sang her first solo at age 5 and wrote her first song at 6. At the age of 9 was fronting adult bands at professional events. She then went on to win Calgary Junior Idol when she was 10. She was later named Miss Teen Calgary - World in 2012 and also competed in the Miss Teen Canada - World pageant. As an actress, she had a major role in the 2009 film Rust, which featured her original song "Could You Imagine." She is featured on the MC Mario single "Anti-Gravity" and has received several offers from music labels, movie producers and has been featured in international publications but has decided to remain independent. David Poe has toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Jayhawks, Chris Whitley, Glenn Tilbrook and Tori Amos. His songs have been recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller and Dave Sitek, and performed by Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, C.C. White, Thomas Dybdahl and the cast of Nashville. His solo recordings include his most recent release God & The Girl, a self-titled debut produced by T-Bone Burnett, The Late Album on Sony/Epic records, Love Is Red on Universal Music/The Lab,  two live recordings and much, much more. Not bad for a sound engineer from the Midwest transplanted to Los Angeles by way of New York City.

Shaman Jon is this week's guest! We chat about creativity, podcasting, and more! If you can't tell, Kev 100% assumed Jon used 'Shaman' as part of his name for 95% of the show... Kev's a fool. ABOUT SHAMAN JON Like the most notable artists within any creative pursuit, songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, Shaman Jon creates music that isn't readily boxed into a single style, genre or sound. Yet once you become familiar with the way he weaves language and melody (and the powers within both) into something well beyond the sum of its parts, his songs, recordings and performances resonate with a distinctive imprint and allure all his own. Jon's artistic mission and reach parallel his ongoing actual, musical, and spiritual journeys, which provide a map to guide the listener to a fuller understanding of the man and the music he creates. Hailed by BSharp Magazine for the way he "bring(s) a poetic sensitivity to music without losing energy or intensity [and] offers a sweet tonic for the trials and tribulations of the human heart." RENAISSANCE JON At every stop Shaman Jon further absorbed a vast range of styles, modes, and inspirations into his writing and composing, digging into ethnic traditions, exploring world music, and keeping an ear to the cutting edge and the craft of popular appeal. He has wrapped it all up into a musical approach that's akin to such artists he admires as the late Chris Whitley, Tricky, Jeff Buckley, and Grant-Lee Phillips, Steve Gunn, Father John Misty but can't help but pull from his earlier aggressive grunge and 70s rock roots. His many musical endeavors beyond his own solo, duo, trio and band endeavors have also included performing in the gamelan company Grady Cousins and the One People Voice and his longtime participation in percussion-oriented ensembles, most recently playing a blend of Brazilian samba, Afro-Cuban drumming, New Orleans second line, hip hop, funk, calypso and more in the Austin, TX-based mobile percussion squad Krakatoa. Shaman Jon and his new band The Ritual are currently working on new songs for an upcoming record and tour. ABOUT THE WISDOM DISTILLERY The Wisdom Distillery is an eclectic long-form podcast much like those of Joe Rogan or Dr. Christopher Ryan or Duncan Trussell. Hosted by entrepreneur, recording artist and filmmaker, Shaman Jon, we cover a broad range of subjects that include; the arts, geopolitics, spirituality and religions, science and futurism, sexuality, music, sustainability, psychedelics as well as discuss controversial current events often from a higher level philosophical and/or spiritual viewpoint. Chris Whitley is a heck of a blues player, but he isn't what you would call a traditionalist. Jeff McErlain shows you one of Chris' more "twisted" blues pieces, played on open-tuned Dobro. Chris describes it as "Bukka White meets Thelonius Monk"...need we say more? This lesson includes Power Tab and is featured on the following CD compilations: ACOUSTIC U. The Grammy-winning producer and musician's credits include records with Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop, the Neville Brothers, and Chris Whitley. Throughout his long association with fellow Canadian producer Daniel Lanois at Kingsway Studio, and in his own Clouet St. and Kingston, NY studios, Malcolm has always pursued a taste-over-flash aesthetic with an affinity for handmade music. He also hosts the weekly radio program [“The Long Way Around”](https://radiokingston.org/en/broadcast/the-long-way-around) highlighting an eclectic mix of artists. While record production can be a nuanced search for the divine in music, Malcolm is equally comfortable in the brutal climate of the Troubled Men Podcast. Topics include an election recap, a porn booth sense memory, COVID testing, a prevention strategy, NXIVM sentencing, “The Vow,” “Seduced,” a high school caper, a first encounter, culture shock, Rockin' Dopsie stories, an interview, a bitter taste, Jeff Treffinger, the Geraniums, the technology trap, the Stephan Eicher sessions, a bedouin tent, Sinéad Lohan, a father's rule of thumb, Woodstock neighbors, Kate Pierson, Levon Helm, self-education, studio psychology, artistic truth, and much more.
