As a health, wellness, or fitness professional, marketing your services via social media is necessary. Throughout the years, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have moved towards short-form videos called Reels or Shorts (YouTube). Ultimately, when your content is shown to a bigger audience, you have a greater chance of acquiring new clients for your business. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia, Ph.D.(c), shares about Instagram templates which can now be easily found in the Reels tab. Under the Reels tab, when creating content, you'll find “template” options that showcase trending templates, original audio, and options recommended for you. As a health, wellness, or fitness professional, these templates can help you grow your accounts and save time. The best part is that your content will now be listed with all the other content using the same templates. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia talks about three different areas for entry-level professionals: getting another certification, experience, and the power of online. These three areas can help your decision to enter this competitive industry. The last topic in this podcast is the power of online training. One of the harsh realities of working in the fitness industry is the varying work hours which leads to difficulty in creating a work-life balance. With such a big emphasis placed on Reels, learning how to create more entertaining and engaging content will only help you grow your audience. Reels have become a source of entertainment for individuals that use Instagram and Facebook, and as a health, wellness, or fitness professional you can use them to engage your audience. Prior to the last year, business owners believed they needed to push their services on social media or believed that social media would not help them attract new customers. With Reels, an individual can use their personality to grow their audience and be creative to capture the attention of potential customers. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) goes over two ways that newcomers to Reels can utilize right away. Reels can seem impossible to individuals unfamiliar with filming content but creating them has become easier than ever. The first way that Tyler goes over this is by using Canva. If you're a fan of the KIPS Podcast, you've probably already heard about Canva and how it can help you create social media content but one of its greatest assets is the Reel templates already available. You can use Canva to properly format your content and use the templates with your existing content. The next way is to use “original audio” within Instagram. This is not what it sounds like but rather existing audio being used by other Reels. You can bookmark these audio files while watching Reels in your free time and then pull them up when you're ready to create your next Reel. *Episode disclaimer* Please note that this episode features sensitive topics such as rape and trauma. Trauma is not a topic typically seen in entry-level certifications for health & fitness professionals but is an underlying issue that can impede the work you are trying to perform. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, guest Angie Nyx shares her work with trauma, PTSD, and military personnel, and how health & fitness professionals can take steps to guide their clients towards overall wellness. Trauma can be an underlying stressor that health & fitness professionals do not understand how to address, and in this episode, Angie shares ways that you can continue the conversation or guide the client to a professional that deals with the issue at hand. One of the unique parts of this episode is when Angie shares the importance of recovery with clients that suffer from trauma. Clients living with trauma will be in a heightened state and unable to fully recover from mental and physical stressors. Thus, working with your client on how to gain data about how their body is currently feeling and steps to improve recovery can be a huge step forward in their health. This episode in the KIPS Podcast is an update to the Social Media Strategy 2023 episode published earlier in the year. In this episode, host Tyler Valencia shares some tips that he's been using over the last month to improve his social media presence. One of the biggest tips from the strategy episode earlier in the year was to eliminate social media platforms where your demographics aren't present. For example, if your audience isn't on Instagram, then don't waste time creating content specific for this platform. Of course it's important to first figure out where your audience is and what the preferred content for that platform is, but this strategy can help prioritize your step spent on social media work. Taking this one step further now, what if your demographic is on a platform that you don't utilize? A strategy that Tyler has been using is to schedule daily time for that platform. Schedule a small amount of time to research, engage with your audience, and develop content for that platform, and then not return till your next scheduled social media slot. With Instagram, making Reels has become easier than ever. There is a plethora of templates that you can plug your content into and with cross-posting you can take advantage of two of the largest platforms on the planet. With the technology available for instructors to utilize, clients exercising at home can interact with a quality coach and go through the same (if not better) experience. Online instructors can perform assessments, provide cues, and create a connection no matter where each party is located. How has your social media strategy evolved over the last few years? Are you still creating the same type of content and posting it across every platform? Has your audience changed and have you evolved with them? These are all questions you should ask yourself on a regular basis if you are creating social media content to grow your social media presence. Not only has each social media platform evolved in terms of which type of content performs more efficiently, but each platform differs in their demographics. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) discusses social media strategy for 2023 and how you can hopefully be more efficient with the time you have to develop content. One of the key items discussed in this episode is to find out where your audience digests social media content. Starting with this can help you decide which type of content to create and which resources you need to search to engage your audience more efficiently. For example, Facebook and Instagram place high emphasis on Reels which can be cross-posted on each platform. Being able to post on two major platforms can be of great benefit, but using a Reel for Twitter or LinkedIn may not net any results. The audience and type of content used on these platforms differs and may be a waste of your time. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia discusses why he believes in the platform, why people end up stopping, and two ways you can use the platform. An important character trait for a fitness professional to develop is empathy. It's important that a fitness instructor understand that exercise is NOT an enjoyable act for the overwhelming majority of humans and often getting to the point to exercise a feat in itself. Developing this trait and figuring out ways to connect with a client can elevate a fitness instructor into another earning potential. In the October roundup episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia starts by discussing this reality and how making drastic claims as a fitness instructor can be detrimental to someone just beginning to exercise. This episode of the KIPS Podcast features two summaries from the KIPS Podcast, one on licensure and the other on developing a social media strategy. The first podcast episode released in October was an interesting topic for fitness professionals on licensure. Will the fitness industry ever go towards a national license in the United States? This is a topic that can affect many different populations, and has positives and negatives for all those involved. One of the main talking points discussed in this episode is whether fitness instruction will improve. Depending on your educational background, experience, and current career, your viewpoint on this subject will vary. It's important to keep in mind that any steps towards licensure can impact those already working in the fitness industry that don't meet the new requirements. Tyler discusses licensure from the perspective of individuals, fitness instructors, education providers, and gyms. Building a social media strategy is a business tool that can help you save time, stay consistent, and attract new clients as a health & fitness professional. Having a strategy means you're creating content for a reason, and not spending time on a daily basis to create new content. Once you have started to utilize a strategy, this will lead to venturing into more advanced strategies and open up more marketing avenues. Tyler shares the importance of using a social media strategy and provides examples on how he creates a 7-day content schedule. When you're starting in the fitness industry, what are your options? Do you have to immediately become an employee at a gym? Are there other routes that might better suit your personality and current work experience? These are all items that are not typically covered in an entry-level educational course for fitness professionals but should be a regular topic to consider. If you know your options, you can hopefully turn your passion of helping individuals improve their health into a long-term career working as a personal trainer or group fitness instructor. While working in the fitness industry can be a nice career, it often takes time to make a decent wage. That is often because fitness instructors work when clients have free time. That is usually before their work day starts or after it ends. This leads to a non-typical work day that some are not used to but all of this can change as you gain more experience and grow your client base. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) goes over the benefits of being an employee and contractor. These options can differ by location and by what you feel more comfortable with at that point in your career. You can typically work through both statuses and grow your work day. If you are a veteran of the fitness industry, don't hesitate to share your input on this topic, as your experiences can hopefully help a new instructor gain knowledge and stay longer within the industry. In this episode of the Best of the KIPS Podcast September 2022, host Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) discusses the two pieces of content released in the previous month and how they both impact the industry. In the one podcast episode, guest Emily Stewart shares how she advocated to move the fitness industry towards unionization and shares information about the survey she has procured to help gather more information for this young industry. While Emily admits that the fitness industry isn't ready for unionization, she discusses how her survey can help gather more information and move the needle towards more favorable work environments for fitness professionals. Any fitness instructor that listens to this episode can likely empathize with the stories shared regarding working environments and contribute their own experience in the same area. The survey that Emily discusses has areas to provide feedback for these situations and hopefully all listeners will be compelled to spend 30 minutes to complete the survey. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) discusses the importance of using a social media strategy and provides examples of how he creates a 7-day content schedule. One of the strategies that Tyler shares is YouTube Centered Digital Marketing. With this strategy, an individual makes content for YouTube and divies it up for other areas of their business. For example, after filming a video for YouTube using it for your blog, newsletter, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and even LinkedIn. Right there are all the major social media platforms that businesses use and more. Keep in mind that this strategy assumes that you are creating content for YouTube following all the best practices and then using that content for every other platform. This type of strategy creates a starting point for how to market your business and how you can have a purpose for each idea. In this episode concepts such as “filler posts”, Reels, Stories, and YouTube best practices will be discussed but know that this is just a starting point. This is a topic that can affect many different populations, and has positives and negatives for all those involved. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, host Tyler Valencia, PhD(c) discusses licensure from the perspective of individuals, fitness instructors, education providers, and gyms. Does this group get grandfathered into the new regulations or do they have to meet the new regulations to continue? Those are tough questions to answer and one of the key reasons why no progress has been made. Another key point to keep in mind is the perspective of the individual looking for help with their health. The individual needing help with their health most likely doesn't go to the gym and doesn't have exercise planned in their immediate future. So would better fitness instruction help this demographic? Isn't helping this demographic the goal of all fitness professionals? This demographic that doesn't exercise probably needs help that isn't changed by a national license within the fitness industry. Summer break for fit pros means time to work on self-development and try new formats to build your fitness business. This can include trying small group training or starting to teach group fitness. Every fit pro that already teaches group fitness knows the power of teaching a class and how much more exposure you get. When teaching a class you are in front of more members on a weekly basis and start to become the go-to contact when a member has a question about health. Use this to your advantage to network and become a valuable employee. In the month of June we released two YouTube tutorials and one podcast episode. The podcast episode featuring Joe Alvarado explores adding YouTube to your existing fitness offerings. Joe's YouTube Channel, Joe Alvarado Indoor Cycling, is monetized and currently possess 1.74K subscribers. Joe is also a Studio Manager with Lifetime Fitness in Centennial, CO and a Stages Master Educator. Joe shares his ‘why' behind starting a YouTube channel and some of the struggle's individuals will face when starting out. An interesting segment of the podcast episode is when Joe shares how he blended his motivational side to his coaching side. Joe is a pastor at his church and realized that he wanted to use the personality he used more in that setting. One of the hardest things when building a social media channel for your business is keeping on-brand. Staying on-brand is a necessary step these days that helps the consumer recognize your brand and creates a sense of security when it comes to making a sale. Using social media to build your business takes practice. Tools like Canva can help you create professional marketing materials that are on-brand and in the format you need for each social media platform. In this review, Tyler Valencia shares why he believes every fitness professional should be using Canva, and then goes through a demo to build a social media post for Instagram. Online booking systems have multiplied over the last few years giving health & fitness professionals the freedom to grow their business. In this step-by-step tutorial, Tyler builds an online booking website for a fictitious in-person bootcamp but this example could be utilized for wellness coaches, online trainers, group fitness instructors or personal trainers. The great thing about using this tutorial is that sessions can be set for online or in-person classes or services. The booking system used in this step-by-step tutorial is StartBooking. Having tried a handful of premium WordPress Plugins prior to finding StartBooking, Tyler guides you through the set up of a booking system that can be easily set up and managed by any individual. Tyler starts this tutorial by sharing why he believes this is a valuable booking system and then shares what you'll need to follow along. If you work in the Washington D.C. The month of May was slow with content being published for KIPS but not for a good reason. At the moment we are putting the finishing touches on a new course, Social Media for Fitness Professionals. This online course will teach the fundamentals of the major social media platforms and show you how to create items like: a business page, private group, Instagram account, a logo, and more! In the month of May there were two discussion episodes of the KIPS Podcast released. The discussion episodes are solo episodes with Tyler Valencia and focus on one topic. The first episode released was “Is Online a Good Route for First Time Instructors?” and the second was “Where To Start As An Online Instructor?”. In previous years, many would have advised that you need an entry level certification and you need to apply to a certain number of gyms in order to get experience. What teaching online has shown us is that instructors can reach a global audience and still provide an effective workout. So can this be a route for newcomers and can they learn skills that help them become a well rounded instructor? In this segment, Tyler Valencia goes through this question and why he believes new fitness instructors can learn skills teaching online that many veteran instructors learn after years of working in the industry. Online workouts force instructors to be creative with their exercise breakdowns and even exercise selection. This translates well to instructors that choose to go back to teaching in-person and creates another avenue for entering the fitness For fitness instructors looking to teach online, where do they start? There are a handful of options available on the market (and growing), and each has its positives and negatives. In this segment, Tyler Valencia shares three different options for fit pros to consider and how they can implement each. The first option Tyler discusses is the Private Facebook Group. This option is low cost and pretty easy to set up. The next option discussed in this episode is the Third Party Booking Site. Companies that offer an all-in-one solution have grown over the last two years and they create a very user-friendly option for fit pros that aren't used to working on a website. The last option discussed is the DIY Membership Site. With this option you are assembling all the pieces to collect payment, protect your content, and designing the website. For fitness instructors looking to teach online, where do they start? What are some of the options available? One of the first questions a fitness instructor will need to address is how comfortable they are with working online. There are a handful of options available on the market (and growing), and each has its positives and negatives. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, Tyler Valencia shares three different options for fit pros to consider and how they can implement each. The first option Tyler discusses is the Private Facebook Group. This option is low cost and pretty easy to set up. Most people have a Facebook account and a private group creates a paywall that you can control who enters and exits. For this option, figuring out how you will collect money will be key to the member experience. Since you don't have a website associated with this option, using a merchant processor such as PayPal or Venmo can help you collect funds and allow for members across the globe. The next option discussed in this episode is the Third Party Booking Site. Companies that offer an all-in-one solution have grown over the last two years and they create a very user-friendly option for fit pros that aren't used to working on a website. On the KIPS Blog you will find a review we completed on one of these (linked below), which reviews the benefits and goes through a few of the features. The last option discussed is the DIY Membership Site. With this option you are assembling all the pieces to collect payment, protect your content, and designing the website. This option takes the most time and is potentially the most expensive, but it allows for the most options. With building your own website you can customize any feature and set up your website for optimal organic growth (SEO). An interesting topic for fitness instructors to discuss is, has online become a viable route for new instructors entering the industry? In previous years, many would have advised that you need an entry level certification and you need to apply to a certain number of gyms in order to get experience. What teaching online has shown us is that instructors can reach a global audience and still provide an effective workout. A major benefit instructors have spoken about is their ability to teach friends and family through Zoom and how it has created a new revenue stream. So can this be a route for newcomers and can they learn skills that help them become a well rounded instructor? In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, Tyler Valencia goes through this question and why he believes new fitness instructors can learn skills teaching online that many veteran instructors learn after years of working in the industry. One of the realities of teaching online is that it is different. Constant communication and cueing helps viewers of the online workout process the information and hopefully complete each workout in a safe manner. As 2022 continues to steam on, what are some ways you can build your fitness business? Every fitness professional knows that once the summer months come around, it's fewer sessions with their clients or less participants in their group fitness classes. But these months can also be beneficial towards continuing your career within the fitness industry. During the slower months, this can be the time where you invest in your foundation such as education, marketing, or advertising. You can enroll in a new educational course or work on the latest social media trend. This type of work helps ensure that you continue your career as a fitness professional and ensure that slower months become less and less. In the month of April, we released three podcast episodes and a tutorial on the best lavalier microphone for online workouts. The tutorial goes through the Rode Wireless Go and why this microphone should be one of your first investments when you're creating online workouts or even for your social media channels. Our three guests for the KIPS Podcast were Sarina Jain, Mary Kennedy, and Michelle Lasiter. Sarina is a three decade industry veteran that has built a global brand, which includes her instructor training, Malasa Bhangra. In this episode, Sarina shares how she adapted her training as the fitness industry evolved all while keeping culture a part of the course. The segments where Sarina talks about culture and why she wanted to include Indian culture in her course are fascinating but also what makes it special. As fit pros we see a ton of formats that claim to be the “best” or be “new” but after watching you quickly see it's pretty similar to a lot of other formats. Finding the elements that make your instructor training unique helps the course stand out. In the clip shared, Sarina shares why she condensed her two-day instructor to one-day and her thought process behind it. Over the last two-years, individuals in the active aging community grew more comfortable with the use of Zoom. Zoom not only allowed individuals to connect online with friends and family across the globe, but also showed them that purchasing services over Zoom is a viable option. Mary Kennedy shares insight into training the active aging population through Zoom and how she deals with typical components of a training session such as the assessment. Mary also shares how she grows her online training business, which might surprise fitness instructors looking to gain clients in the active aging population. In the clip shared, Mary explains how she started to do assessments online. As a fitness instructor progresses their career, they begin to see the importance of a work-life balance. Guest Michelle Lasiter shares how being a busy mom and instructing fitness classes differs from being a new instructor with an open schedule. Michelle shares how when she had her first child, her schedule flipped from teaching in the evenings to teaching in the early mornings and late morning. With non-traditional work hours for fitness instructors being a common occurrence, scheduling your days and times to instruct will also vary with the age of your kids. One of the areas that Michelle shares is the importance of nailing your try-out and interview when looking to get hired at a new gym. Michelle used to be a manager for a major gym franchise in Arizona and shares the perspective from the instructor and manager. A good piece of advice that Michelle shares is making sure you show your personality during your demonstration and be a professional. Even if you have limited availability, managers will hire quality instructors if they believe the instructor will bring value to their gym. Over the last two-years, individuals in the active aging community grew more comfortable with the use of Zoom. In this episode of the KIPS Podcast, guest Mary Kennedy shares insight into training the active aging population online and how she deals with typical components of a training session such as the assessment and cueing. Mary also shares how she grows her online training business, which might surprise fitness instructors looking to gain clients in the active aging population. Mary starts the episode by sharing how Zoom allowed her to train clients in different states and how online training has allowed some of her clients to gain access to exercise. What many fitness instructors forget is how training the active aging population may have barriers such as transportation. Using Zoom for workouts can be done in the comfort of a client's home and can be just as effective. On top of this Mary shares why she wears certain colors while teaching online and why it's important to do so. One of the best segments of this episode is when Mary shares how she performs assessments and has altered her cueing for online workouts. Being creative and thinking outside the box with these items has helped her be more effective with her communication and gain the information needed to create individualized programs. When Mary cues online, she is often pointing out on her own body and showing where the client should be feeling the exercise. This level of instruction is a modification to her usual teaching style but also a way to impart knowledge onto the clients. In March 2022 we released less than the normal amount of content but at the same time made progress for the new online courses we are releasing this year. One of those courses is Social Media for Fitness Professionals, which is a course that teaches branding and the fundamentals of each major social media platform. Over the last few years, fitness instructors have seen the importance of marketing their training despite if they worked for a gym or as an independent instructor. Marketing your training through social media shows your professionalism, builds your value as an instructor, and helps create new leads for training. We hope that this course releases in the next few months and is a foundation for fitness instructors building their career. One of the pieces of content that we released in March was a written blog on the differences between being an employee and contractor. There are many industry veterans that don't know the difference between these distinctions and think that being a contractor is a negative. This is not so much the fault of the instructor, but a failure from an educational standpoint that instructors are not being equipped with basic employment knowledge. After reading this blog we hope that it helps you understand each distinction and can make a wise decision to help you grow your fitness career. In the KIPS Podcast we had two great educators from the fitness industry. Our first guest from the month was Leslee Bender, 2020 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year. Leslee has developed her own instructor training courses, is on the fitness conference circuit, has a piece of exercise equipment named after her (the Bender Ball), and is a three decade veteran of the industry. In the episode with Lesslee we jump into fitness education, core training and tips for instructors looking to get hired. The next guest in the KIPS Podcast was Vincent Metzo, Senior Fitness Director for Town Sports International. Vincent currently oversees the education for all new and existing fitness instructors, a job he started in the last two-years. In the episode with Vince we go over what it's been like for gyms and instructors getting back to business. There were many fitness instructors that made more money than when they worked at a gym, and going back to work in a gym was not as appealing.
