Former president Chester A. Arthur is probably best remembered for his mutton chops and as a trivia question. But he did play a surprising role as a reformer when the nation was in the grips of political corruption. And the story of how he found the courage to do so holds some lessons for how we might interact with political power today in hopes of a better tomorrow. Joining Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is Destry Edwards to discuss his new documentary Dear Mr. President: The Letters of Julia Sand, and how a single citizen can have an outsized effect on our political system. About Destry Edwards Destry Edwards is the Media Production and Studio Manager at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. With a passion for both film and politics, Destry seeks to use storytelling as a way to bridge the gap between people and policy. He is a native of the great state of South Carolina. Before coming on with CEI, Destry's background includes time at FreedomWorks and Blaze Media. Destry holds a Bachelor of Science in Cinema Production from Bob Jones University. About the Documentary In 1881, following President James Garfield's assassination, the country was in turmoil. Many suspected Vice President Chester Arthur, a long-time beneficiary of the spoils system, to be a party to the plot and dreaded his ascension to the presidency. In the immediate aftermath—and before the height of the women's suffrage movement—New Yorker Julia Sand wrote to the soon-to-be President. Between August 1881 and September 1883, Sand penned 23 letters to President Arthur imploring him to abandon his corrupt machinations, become the leader the country deserved, and champion civil service reform. The Competitive Enterprise Institute proudly presents the documentary Dear Mr. President: The Letters of Julia Sand to discover the outsized effect a single citizen can have on our political system. Do you know the difference between a Studio Manager and a Studio Coordinator? Both are crucial for keeping studios running smoothly, but knowing which one your studio needs can be even more important for your hiring process. Coordinators handle scheduling, client communication, and logistics, allowing photographers to focus on their creative work. They create an organised environment where photographers can do their best. Managers oversee the studio's overall operations. They take care of budgeting, resource allocation, and team management, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Their role is essential in making sure everyone has what they need to work effectively and harmoniously. But remember, bringing in business isn't just up to the coordinators and managers; it's a team effort. Photographers, assistants, and administrative staff all play important roles in attracting and keeping clients. By producing great work, offering excellent customer service, and using their networks, everyone helps the studio succeed. This teamwork is key to maintaining a steady flow of business. Born in Coventry but evacuated to Preston during the Blitz, Delia cites the sound of air raid sirens as inspiring her interest in electronic sound. She went on to study Maths and Music at Cambridge University and launched her career at the BBC in 1960 as a trainee Studio Manager. She moved to the Radiophonic Workshop in 1962, where she spent the next 11 years developing experimental sounds and music for their TV and radio shows, in addition to working as a freelancer on film, theatre and other live projects. Her most famous work is her electronic arrangement of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme, created in 1963.Delia composed and produced electronic music using tape, plus early synthesis and sampling methods before specific instruments were created for these purposes. Her work has influenced and inspired many modern artists including The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Nainita Desai, Amon Tobin and Cosey Fanni Tutti, while Pink Floyd, Orbital and Hannah Peel have reinterpreted her work.Mark Ayres BiogMark Ayres is a composer, arranger, sound designer, mixer and mastering engineer. He has also composed for television and film including scores for 1996 feature "The Innocent Sleep" and the more recent "Scar Tissue".Mark was involved in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's final days and went on to become their archivist. A personal friend of Delia Derbyshire, he was entrusted with her personal archive after her death in 2001, which is now on permanent loan to the University of Manchester John Rylands Library and accessible for study. He is a Trustee of the Delia Derbyshire Day Charity. His devotion to the Workshop after Doctor Who ceased broadcasting in 1989 proved vital in regenerating interest in their work, and he is now the driving force behind their live revival on the festival circuit and in the creation of new works including the score for Matthew Holness' disturbing psychological horror film, "Possum". He has produced and mastered many recordings for Silva Screen Records and others, and his work remastering classic television programmes including Doctor Who, Quatermass, and the films of Ken Russell and Alan Clarke for broadcast, DVD and Blu-ray, including 5.1 remixes of many titles, has been highly acclaimed.David Butler BiogDavid Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Drama and Film Studies at the University of Manchester. On the 75th episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Cheryl Callender, a Studio Manager on WGI's Landscape Architecture team in sunny Fort Lauderdale, FL! Cheryl boasts over 25 years of professional experience, 7 of which she has spent with us here at WGI. In speaking with Cheryl, we learned that she was born and raised in the Central American country of Panama, where she is proud to have obtained her Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Panama. Post-graduation, Cheryl spent the first seven years of her career as a licensed architect in Panama before being offered the opportunity to relocate to the United States to further her education via a Master's program. It was then that she decided to make the jump from architecture to landscape architecture by obtaining her Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Florida A&M University. Cheryl shared what drew her into the architecture industry as well as what she loves most about the field, her reasoning for making the transition to landscape architecture, and the likenesses and differences between the two professions. Cheryl also told us the story of how she met her husband, who just happens to be a professional landscape architect, and we were shocked to find out that he actually works with us here at WGI, too! We then learned that Cheryl is tri-lingual, speaking English, Spanish, and French, and discovered that she had a hand in developing a memorable commercial you may have seen a time or two for a well-known tax preparation company. In her spare time, Cheryl enjoys traveling to new places, working out, visiting the Disney parks with her family, and diving into home improvement projects. So what are you waiting for? Check out Cheryl's podcast today to discover Cheryl's hidden talent, learn more about the many languages she speaks, and hear about the unique place where she said: "I do."

From an early age, a camera was in his hands and he had the influence of his father's friends and peers; David Bailey and Terence Donovan with their numerous debates on photography around the kitchen table. It was inevitable that photography would have a huge influence on Chris's life. He is perhaps the only person to have assisted all three photographers nicknamed by Norman Parkinson as ‘The Black Trinity'.At 17 Chris began work as a Trainee Processor in a photo lab but after a year started assisting Duffy as a Third Assistant quickly working his way up to Studio Manager.Chris worked and traveled the world with Duffy for nearly seven years and in 1979 established his own studio. During the 80's Chris worked as one of the top music photographers (Bowie/Adam Ant/Steve Strange/Sade/Spandau etc.) as well as numerous other commissions covering a wide range of genres. Chris later moved into shooting moving images forming a film production company with Duffy and were successful in shooting both commercials and pop promos. Chris moved to LA in the early '90s working as a director of photography and in 1997 was drawn back to the energy and creativity of London riding high on the wave of ‘Cool Britannia.'In 2005 Duffy was diagnosed with a degenerative lung disease and Chris finally persuaded him to start work on establishing an archive. Together they sifted through all of Duffy's remaining photographic material and selected and printed modern edition prints with the intention of exhibiting and producing books.Sadly Duffy passed away in May 2010 but Chris has continued to build the archive and Duffy's work is now exhibited by museums and galleries around the world and is highly sort after by collectors.Chris continues to shoot his own work outside of commercial restraints, he promotes Duffy's work on a world stage and is a well regarded speaker.Learn More about the Duffy Archive.Lean more about Lyte.Find more great podcasts from Osiris Media, the leading storyteller in music. Ruben Escalante suffered a heart attack as a freshman in high school. But this is only surprising until Ruben reveals the trauma they endured as a child: the father who went out at least once a week and came home drunk, angry, and violent; the early death of the grandfather who was the only one that could subdue his dad's temper; the constant and vicious attacks at school by bullies who could not accept a sensitive, poetry-loving brown boy. In our conversation, Ruben talks about how art, music, and movies were always a way to cope with life's challenges, how they came to San Jose, and how discovering South First Art Walk opened their eyes to the creative scene. Now, as the Programs Director at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center powered by Google at MACLA, Ruben can continue to grow as an artist and mentor while helping others find their voice and police in creativity.
