Mike Donlin: A Rough and Rowdy Life From New York Baseball Idol to Stage and Screen The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living Interview Series Ladies and gentlemen, picture this: A baseball star so good they called him “Turkey Mike,” a man who could hit, run, and put on a show at the plate like nobody else. A fan favorite, a heartthrob, a natural entertainer. But also—a brawler, a drinker, a man with a temper so fierce he got himself suspended almost as often as he hit home runs. And then? He walked away. Right at the peak of his career, with numbers that could have made him a legend, Mike Donlin did the unthinkable—he left baseball. Not for injury. Not for money. But for love. Her name was Mabel Hite, a Vaudeville star with a dazzling smile and a quick wit. Together, they became one of the most famous couples of their time—packing theaters, charming audiences, and proving that baseball and showbiz weren't so different after all. But their story wasn't all curtain calls and encore performances. Tragedy struck, and Donlin, once the brightest star on both the diamond and the stage, found himself at a crossroads once again. Today, we're diving into this forgotten, fascinating, and downright unbelievable story with baseball historian and award-winning author Steven Steinberg. His new book, available at Apple Books, Mike Donlin: A Rough and Rowdy Life from New York Baseball Idol to Stage and Screen, brings this larger-than-life character back into the spotlight. We'll talk about Donlin's triumphs, fights, Hollywood years, and the love that changed everything. Baseball, Vaudeville, scandal, romance, and a man too big for just one stage—this is going to be a great one. So, grab a seat, and let's get into it. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is The Not Old – Better Show.

Over the past several months under the Biden Administration, several fossil fuel mega projects or “carbon bombs” have been approved with a mega gold mining project currently under proposal and in opposition by numerous Alaska Native organizations, communities, and nations. For instance, on March 13th, 2023, the U.S. Interior Department approved the ConocoPhillips $8 billion Willow oil and gas drilling project on Alaska's North Slope, which will produce a peak of 180,000 barrels of oil per day, roughly 40 percent of all current daily production in Alaska. In addition, on April 13th, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy approved the $39 billion Alaska Gasline Development Corp's (AGDC) project to export Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to countries the United States does not have free trade agreements with, mainly in Asia. Backers of the project expect it to be operational by 2030 if it receives the required permits. Alaska LNG includes a liquefaction facility on the Kenai peninsula in southern Alaska and the proposed 807-mile pipeline will transport gas in northern Alaska across the state. While the Biden Administration contends these mega projects are a matter of economic and national security, the proposed Donlin gold mine project is along the salmon-bearing tributary of the Kuskokwim River in Alaska and threatens several Alaska Native families, communities, and nations traditional ways of life. The company Donlin Gold, LLC is owned by Barrick Gold and NovaGold corporations and it has proposed an open pit mine, measuring up to 2.2 miles long and 1 mile wide in YK Delta. Donlin Gold's proposed open mine is projected to have a 27-year life span that will result in mining about 1.5 million ounces of gold per year, destroying land and life throughout the region, storing over 3 billion tons of waste rock mine tailings in an artificial pond behind a large earthen dam (460 feet high and 5,800 feet long). Our guest for the hour discusses how the recent mega projects will harm Mother Earth, the proposed Donlin Gold Mine Project and its implications for life, the extractive industries in Alaska, and the overall complexities of the Alaska Native Settlement Claims Act of 1971 that shape a very complex and dynamic terrain for Alaska Native peoples, communities, and nations, and more. • Guest: o Anaan'arar Sophie Swope is Cup'ik, a community organizer at Native Movement (https://www.nativemovement.org), and the director for the Mother Kuskokwim Tribal Coalition (https://www.facebook.com/MotherKuskokwim/), an organization dedicated to fighting against the Donlin Gold Mine Project and protecting the traditional territories of Alaska Native peoples throughout Materilluk (Bethel, AK) region. A proposed gold mine in southwest Alaska promises riches for investors and Alaska Native workers alike over nearly three decades. The open pit Donlin Gold Mine has the necessary federal permits in place. But several Alaska Native villages and environmental groups say the cost to retrieve the gold is too high, harming the health and livelihoods of the people who live there. A coalition of tribal and environmental groups are suing to halt the mine. Today on Native America Calling, we hear more about the history, economic promise, and potential threats to the people, wilderness, and wildlife the Donlin Gold Mine poses with Thom Leonard (Tribal member, Chevak Native Village), Calista Vice President of Corporate Affairs; Tisha Kuhns (Tribal member, Akiachak Native Community), Calista Vice President of Land and Natural Resources; Tom Waldo, senior advisor for Earthjustice and the tribes; Sophie Swope (Yup'ik), director of Mother Kuskokwim Tribal Coalition; Council member and elder John Andrew (village of Kwethluk); and Organized Village of Kwethluk president Boris Epchook.

Newland, Christopher & Donlin, Wendy - Applied Modeling and the Identification of Behavioral Mechanisms of Action - A good model will reduce behavior to its fundamental elements. If successful, then this distillation can be exported to other research domains to address mechanistic questions. In our case, for example, the goal is the understanding of how environmental contaminants disrupt operant behavior. We describe our application of models to address the behavioral consequences of exposure to methylmercury: Models of choice using the matching relationship and Shull's mathematical model of behavior as a pattern of engagement bouts. We describe how we selected these models and then the stages of application. For example, with Shull's model we replicate it, extend it to high-rate behavior under percentile and DRH schedules of reinforcement, reproducing its essential features, scale it up and automate parameter estimation it so that it can be applied with a large number of conditions and subjects. Finally, using multiple regression, we test the application to confirm that the model parameters provide independent descriptors of behavior under these reinforcement schedules. The model's parameters can then he used as dependent measures to parse two distinctive effects methylmercurv: alterations in reinforcer efficacy and motor competence. in a sense, this application represents, we think, a variation of another model, namely, Pennypacker's, model of of technology transfer.
