Christine Newell spent a challenging yet life‑changing year in South Korea, working with an experimental theatre company. Grieving her father and wrestling with anxiety and imposter syndrome, she arrived in Seoul feeling lost. But soon found exactly what she needed. In this episode, she speaks openly about the mental health struggles that often shadow a career in theatre, noting that around 70 percent of people battle impostor syndrome at some point, with women hit hardest.Seoul also introduced her to Yak Sik Dong Won - “food is medicine.” Sharing plates of kimchi, galbijjim and soothing rice porridge with colleagues, she discovered how thoughtful Korean cooking and communal meals can nourish both body and mind. The most moving moment came during her first Seollal, the Korean New Year. As she watched families honour their ancestors with bows and rice‑cake offerings, her own grief shifted: “Death in Korea, much like winter, is not an ending, it's a transition.”Christine's story shows how theatre, food and ritual can guide us through loss and self‑doubt, and invites anyone standing at a crossroads to trust that balance waits on the other side of brave choices.Read : Five Season in Seoul

Send me a Text Message✨ Episode Summary: What if your deepest grief was actually your greatest opportunity for growth? In this heart-opening conversation, Brian D. Smith sits down with photographer, filmmaker, and former attorney Peter Alessandria to explore how loss, self-doubt, and life's most painful detours can lead to profound spiritual awakening.Peter shares his personal transformation—how losing everything during the 2008 financial crisis set him on a path to uncovering his creative gifts, and how his brother's unexpected passing deepened his spiritual conviction. His documentary, Every Soul Knows, weaves together the voices of over 60 near-death experiencers, mediums, and spiritual teachers—all pointing to a powerful truth: we are so much more than we think we are.
"The wound is the place where the Light enters you." – RumiIn this essay, I reflect on the heartbreak that shattered me and became a profound initiation—what I now understand as a sacred wound. Through the lens of myth, poetry, psychology, and personal story, I explore how grief, when fully embraced, can become a teacher, a threshold, and even a source of creative power. I weave my own experience of devastating loss with the stories of Orpheus, Chiron, Rumi, Tristan and Isolde, and others who were shaped by wounds they never fully healed from. Rather than trying to “get over” the pain, I chose to sanctify it—to treat it as a passage into deeper love, art, and soul. This essay is both a mourning song and a love letter to those who carry their own sacred wounds, and an offering of hope that our suffering, if honored, can become the very source of our genius.

Jessica Ronne has endured more heartache than most can even fathom. She found out when she was pregnant with her second son that he'd had a stroke in utero and would be profoundly disabled if she carried him to term. She and her husband made the decision to carry him to full term and let God handle the details. Lucas does have those disabilities, but Jess and her husband never wished they'd made a different choice. Then, several years and two more children later, Jess's husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away at the age of 33, leaving her to take care of their four small children. But God didn't leave her in her grief. She met a wonderful man, a widower with three children and they married, blended their families and even added one more to the mix. Even though Jess has a hard story, she's used her experience to create The Lucas Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to serving parent caregivers with respite, recognition and resources. She is also the associate producer of the documentary Unseen and the author of four books, including her most recent, Caregiving with Grit and Grace. Jessica's pain led her to create resources to help others, because she understands what it means to be in an unfamiliar world of grief and caregiving, not knowing how to navigate it all. Her relationship with Jesus is even stronger today than when she was a young mom because she learned to lean on Him, and even question Him, through it all. Even though her story is hard, she fought her way through it and made it to the other side to let you know whatever you're going through, God's got you. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that “He comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Here's Jess' story... Writer and winter enthusiast Katherine May revels in the winter months. While the long, dark evenings invite us to huddle indoors and disconnect from the world, they also offer a chance for reflection, remembrance, and a reset in our lives. As May explains, this season is a time to pause and recalibrate for many. “Winter is a season of dread as a time of year when grief surfaces. There are people who will be spending their first Christmas alone, or maybe their fifth Christmas alone – everything will be out of place.” May, author of the book Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times, encourages embracing those feelings of loss and loneliness that seem to creep in with the cold. She argues that “this time of year, we're often so tired and grumpy” that “we have to treat ourselves like children sometimes, who are in need of a nap, in need of a snack, in need of a bit of quiet time.” The cure for this? May encourages going outdoors and looking to nature for inspiration and guidance, pointing out that even at the bleakest, darkest time of year, life goes on. “Think about it in terms of hibernation, in terms of really drawing back. It becomes this beautiful process of rebirth to me and this paring back of what we need teaches us something really profound. Which is that life goes on, even in the most compromised of circumstances.” To wrap up 2024, Life Examined host Jonathan Bastian and producer Andrea Brody reflect on their year, both on and off the air. They share what defined the year for them personally, highlighting the guests and conversations that left a lasting impact—from the chaotic, unpredictable world of Burning Man to a deeply personal story of loss, and much more. My guests today are Kerri and Steve Boone.Kerri is a registered nurse and a certified health coach, and Steve is the CEO of Wilkins Medical Group. They live in east Tennessee. My connection with Kerri and Steve is through the beautiful expansion of our family, as one of my nieces married one of their sons a year and a half ago. You'll hear more about our meeting and surprising point of connection in our conversation, but in short, after several superficial interactions, Kerri and Steve and I connected deeply through shared experiences of loss and grief.I do a lot of work in storytelling and this entire podcast is built on the belief that we connect through our stories and that hearing other people share their stories can make life a little less difficult – knowing we aren't alone. Despite this foundational and core belief that I hold, I continue to be surprised at the unexpected connections that arise – such as this one with Kerri and Steve. At times people will ask me, does it always need to be a sad story? One of loss or grief? No, absolutely not, and I love telling and hearing funny stories as well. There is the reality, however, that it's more difficult to share our stories of pain, so when we do and we connect with someone else who understands our pain, that creates a deep resonance in us as humans.I say all that because this conversation is such a beautiful reflection of it all – why I started this podcast, why I tell my story, and why I invite others to share their stories. While it doesn't fix things, while it doesn't take the pain away when there's pain, sharing does indeed make life a little less difficult. And Kerri and Steve are committed to sharing their story of loss and grief with others as a way to connect, support, and encourage their fellow sojourners on this journey of life.Kerri and Steve – thank you! Thank you for sharing these pieces of your story. Thank you for sharing the reflections and transformations you have experienced along with the pain and grief. Thank you for your generosity and desire to be present with others, whatever they might be going through. I'm grateful for this connection.Make Life Less Difficult

Lynne Hughes lost both her parents by the age of 12. She recognized the lack of resources available to her as a grieving child, and into adult life realized child bereavement resources were still nonexistent. So, she took her love for summer camp and founded Comfort Zone Camp, the first-ever national 501(c)3 bereavement camp for grieving children and families. Since its inception in 1998, CZC has helped over 24,000 grieving children. Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Lynne Hughes about managing grief. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Lynne highlights the importance of preparing children to handle common questions and emotional moments, especially in school settings. Lynne explains creating environments where children can express their emotions and feel safe is crucial for their well-being and learning. Lynne emphasizes that there is no one way to grieve, and each individual's journey is unique. Validating children's emotions, demonstrating coping skills, and offering consistent support are key components in helping them navigate life's difficulties and build resilience. Abby and Patrick welcome labor journalist Sarah Jaffe – author of Necessary Trouble and Work Won't Love You Back – for her first interview about her forthcoming book, From the Ashes: Grief and Revolution in a World on Fire. From the Ashes is at once a deeply personal narrative and a wide-ranging journey of searing reportage on the lives and struggles of individuals and communities. Sarah, Abby, and Patrick take on the overdeterminations of loss, grief, mourning, and memorialization from contemporary political discourse to Freud's classic “Mourning and Melancholia.” In what ways can individual experiences of grief be fundamentally singular and yet also sites of collective solidarity and social transformation? What are the norms, narratives, and timelines that get imposed on expressions of psychic pain in the wake of loss, from the DSM to Human Resources to newspaper headlines? How does the experience of loss differ when the lost object in question isn't necessarily a person, but a place, an ideal, intergenerational links, or expectations for a now-foreclosed future instead?Details about From the Ashes are here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/sarah-jaffe/from-the-ashes/9781541703490/ and the book is available for preorder here: https://hachettebookgroup.formstack.com/forms/fromtheashes (use code FTA20 for 20% off, plus bonus content)Sarah's website is here: https://sarahljaffe.com/Key texts cited in the episode:Freud, “Mourning and Melancholia”Freud, “On Transience”Jacqueline Rose, “Virginia Woolf and the Death of Modernism”Namwali Serpell, The FurrowsHave you noticed that Freud is back? Welcome back to Friendship Therapy, the podcast where psychotherapist, author and podcaster Emma Reed Turrell looks at your friendship experiences through a therapy lens. This week, Emma chats to 28-year-old Rachel about intertwining our identity with our friendships, the process of 'trimming' friends over time as we grow and age, and how the turbulence and loss of our teens and twenties can affect our friendships.Rachel very sadly lost her dad when she was 26, and as an only child, she found the process of grieving incredibly isolating and lonely. It wasn't the first time she had gone through turbulence and change in her home life; Rachel's dad was first diagnosed with cancer when she was just 12 years old, and when she was 16, her parents separated. Without a sibling who she could share the loss with, Rachel's friends stepped in to hold her hand in the trenches of grief and help her navigate some of the most challenging moments in her life.In this episode, Rachel speaks so honestly and candidly about grief, loss and hope, the parental role that she played in her friendship groups and how that changed and evolved over time, leaning into reciprocity in relationships, and navigating the fear of loss as our lives and friendships take on a different trajectory.Learn more about the blind spots in Emma's new book, What am I Missing?: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/454959/what-am-i-missing-by-turrell-emma-reed/9780241624982If you'd like to apply to appear on the podcast in season two, please click the link below to fill out the form: https://forms.gle/owsfs6DVxVdTMFo46 ---Friendship Therapy is hosted by Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp and Lauren Brook.--- Social media: Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellFriendship Therapy @friendshiptherapypodEmail: contact@friendshiptherapypod.co.uk

Read all the details from this week's podcast episode in my blogpost here! This is a story about grief, loss and how to navigate it as a personal brand.Almost six weeks ago now, I lost my beautiful mum. (It hurts to type that). It feels like my security blanket has been ripped from under me.I feel alone, exposed and honestly? Just so very sad. Here's the thing as a personal brand business. Personal things happen. They bleed into business. And as a result, running a very front-facing business in challenging times feels extra challenging – something that has absolutely been my experience over the past while. Today, I want to share a little about my experience navigating profound loss as a personal brand.—Helpful Resources:Insanely helpful conversation: Navigating Grief [ft Therapist Gina Moffa] – With Sam Vander Wielen. I resonated with so much of this. It talks about personal brand businesses in particular, and listened twice. Feeling seen: Motherless Daughters – Grief support for mother loss. Simply scrolling through these has helped me a lot, the posts are real and reflect a lot of the things I think myself. Simply knowing I am not alone has helped immensely. Questions and conversations with loved ones: List of Questions for Interviewing Your Loved Ones – Brendon Burchard wrote this list of questions he asked his Dad. Lucy Percy at Head and Heart Estate Planning sent me some Legacy of Love conversation starters (not sure if she is offering these, but her Instagram is useful also). Want more?
