The Mind of an Athlete. Show Up and Do the Grunt Work. Here we are in February. How are those New Year's Resolutions going for you? Fortune.com tells us that by the second Friday of January, most people have already missed the mark on their resolutions. It even has a name – “Quitter's Day.” Dr. Darian Parker, the 2023 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year Recipient, is a multihyphenate entrepreneur, athlete, and a man of faith. And he is breaking open myths. On what it takes to be a Division-1 Student Athlete competing at elite levels (he was a sprinter at James Madison University). On the interior work he has to do to be a good father (as he says, “I'm always working on the inner me, so that I can help develop a better inner person for another person.”). On the reality that life is lived at its best and realest without guarantees or known outcomes but is founded on authentic love for our fellow human beings (as a professed man of faith, he is looking to love people authentically). And a question that I have pondered often – do we have to love our jobs, or is something different going on in respect to what we do versus who we are in our souls? Through his work with clients over the last two decades, Darian has learned that all we can rely on is our ability to build true relationships with one another and to make a commitment to show up every day even when the outcomes are unknown or don't go our way. In his work as a personal trainer, he won't promise his clients that they will get that long sought after six-pack or hit that number they are looking for on the scale. Oftentimes, those type of results are based on circumstances that only the client can control – the quality of their sleep, what they are actually eating, how are their personal relationships impacting their lives? Darian will guarantee that he will show up every day and be ready to face the challenge of working out alongside them. The bigger factor in the equation is will they show up for themselves. In a time when so many seek quick results and instant fame, IG likes and the social media viral moments, Darian believes that one's life doesn't bloom under the bright lights of fame, accolades, or ego. Instead, it is a nuanced dance performed in the powerful spaces of the admission “I don't know.” It is facing, even removing what he calls the Friction Points in our lives. For Dr. Parker, the real champions show up daily and do the monotonous grunt work that is a major and essential part of what we call living. At the Podium WebsiteAt the Podium on IGPatrick on IGFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com

In March 2022 we released less than the normal amount of content but at the same time made progress for the new online courses we are releasing this year. One of those courses is Social Media for Fitness Professionals, which is a course that teaches branding and the fundamentals of each major social media platform. Over the last few years, fitness instructors have seen the importance of marketing their training despite if they worked for a gym or as an independent instructor. Marketing your training through social media shows your professionalism, builds your value as an instructor, and helps create new leads for training. We hope that this course releases in the next few months and is a foundation for fitness instructors building their career. One of the pieces of content that we released in March was a written blog on the differences between being an employee and contractor. There are many industry veterans that don't know the difference between these distinctions and think that being a contractor is a negative. This is not so much the fault of the instructor, but a failure from an educational standpoint that instructors are not being equipped with basic employment knowledge. After reading this blog we hope that it helps you understand each distinction and can make a wise decision to help you grow your fitness career. In the KIPS Podcast we had two great educators from the fitness industry. Our first guest from the month was Leslee Bender, 2020 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year. Leslee has developed her own instructor training courses, is on the fitness conference circuit, has a piece of exercise equipment named after her (the Bender Ball), and is a three decade veteran of the industry. In the episode with Lesslee we jump into fitness education, core training and tips for instructors looking to get hired. The next guest in the KIPS Podcast was Vincent Metzo, Senior Fitness Director for Town Sports International. Vincent currently oversees the education for all new and existing fitness instructors, a job he started in the last two-years. In the episode with Vince we go over what it's been like for gyms and instructors getting back to business. There were many fitness instructors that made more money than when they worked at a gym, and going back to work in a gym was not as appealing. Vince shares his insights into online workouts for gyms and how the member experience should hopefully improve. If you're a fitness professional in Seattle, check out the information on the upcoming PNW FitCon. Below is a link to the conference schedule and with code “VALENCIA” save $30 at checkout. When you enter the fitness industry, what are the next steps you take to grow your career? Do you take another educational course, or do you try to get more experience? In episode 60 of the KIPS Podcast, guest Leslee Bender shares her insight from over three decades of experience in the fitness industry. Leslee provides insight into some of the biggest issues facing fitness professionals, education that she believes can provide better hands-on experience, and a mindset that can help an instructor grow their career. Leslee's experience from the industry includes being a conference presenter, educator, published author, and gym management. She is the 2020 IDEA Personal Trainer of Year and actively creating education that improves an instructor's knowledge base. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-463 – Jason Karp – Sexercise (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4463.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Chris' other show à Intro: Hello my friends and welcome to episode 4-463 of the RunRunLive Podcast. I'm writing this early in the week because I've got vacation time this week and I'm trying to get ahead as much as possible. Those of you who have been listening for many years may remember that we used to push out a show every week. I switched to fortnightly so I could have the off week to work on other projects. That's how I was able to push out the MarathonBQ, not so much by rigorously working on this other work on the off week but more by just creating some breathing room. Some mental space. It's going to be a tight week for me. It was Labor Day long weekend up here in the States – so Monday was a holiday. I hadn't noticed this when I scheduled this vacation for Wednesday through Friday. So I'm working only Tuesday this week and trying to cram a week's worth of stuff into it. I'm traveling down to Pennsylvania, about a 7-hour drive from my house, with my wife to poke around a little. Then we're going to meet the Extra-Milers for a race next weekend. I am still not running. I am still on my workout cadence of Swim, Bike, Lift. And, I was able to locate my wetsuit. I'm looking forward to shaking the dust out of that tonight and giving it a try at the pond. The weather is starting to get a little colder. It's in the 50's in the mornings. Tropical storm IDA dumped about a ½ foot of rain on us last week. So, the pond water is dropping in temperature. The wetsuit also makes swimming easier and safer. It's designed for triathletes and give you flotation in the placed you need it to help your form. And, if for some reason you get in trouble, there is no way to sink wearing a wetsuit. You float like a cork. So maybe I'll go a little bit longer this afternoon. The knee feels good. I feel good. I'm tempted to start running again. We'll see how this walk/run of the ½ marathon this weekend feels. Today we have got a very interesting interview for you all. I managed to corral Dr. Jason Karp to talk about his book “Sexercise”, where he explores the connection between fitness and sex. And, probably not surprisingly, there are a lot of connections. Fair warning, if you're triggered by people having a frank discussion about sexual activities, (all very clinical and non-titillating), If those kinds of talks bother you, you might want to skip this one. In section one we are going to talk about race volunteering. And in section two I'll continue on my mindfulness sessions and talk about how to keep from following your monkey mind into the ditch. I've taken this opportunity of a relatively stable and relaxed training schedule, combined with work from home, to begin a 30-day structured morning routine. I'm following Hal Elrods' Miracle Morning routine. I've done it on and off for years, since interviewing Hal way back when on the podcast. The routine follows the mnemonic “S.A.V.E.R.S”. The first S is Silence. This can be prayer or meditation. I've been kicking off my days with 10 minutes of meditation. The A and the V are Affirmations and Visualization. I have selected a small group of affirmations I read through or recite and I have selected a simple set of goals and outcomes, like visualizing my knee healing, that I go through. Then the next E for exercise, this is where I used to get stuck, because my training schedule was such that I would have some massive workout on the calendar and that would overwhelm the rest of the process. This time around I'm simply doing a 2-minute plank every day during this morning practice and doing my actual workout later in the day after work. Then R is for reading, and I'm doing 10 minutes of some sort of reading. Right nowI'm working through “The Untethered Soul” – which is really good for this type of small read and think about it format. Then the last S is for Scribing or writing. Most people use this for Journalling, but I'm using more as a creative space for my existing writing practice. The whole practice ends up being about an hour. I'm getting up at my normal 6:00 AM wake up time. I'm 8 days in. I wouldn't say it's changing my life but it is helping me be more focused and less likely to get stressed out over something that pops up. On days when I'm under time pressure and have to be out of the house, I can squish it down to a 20 or 30 minute practice. Why do you care? Because we are about to go into a busy and potentially stressful period of everyone's lives. It might help to have a practice that helps you through that. With work from home and the current environment it's conducive to these types of practices. You have an opportunity to use circumstance to your advantage. You might want to look into that, Seize the opportunity as they say! Whoever they are… On with the show! A competitive runner since sixth grade, Jason quickly learned how running molds us into better, more deeply conscious people, just as the miles and interval workouts mold us into faster, more enduring runners. His REVO₂LUTION RUNNING™ certification has been obtained by coaches and fitness professionals in 25 countries. Section Two – More minfulness - http://runrunlive.com/mindfulness-in-practice-surfing-the-energy-wave Outro Ok my friends we have sexercised through the ed of episode 4-463 of the RunRunLive Podcast. Was it good for you? I'm rushing to put this one out, because I was out on vacation most of the week. Sorry for being late!. It's a lesson learned, I suppose. Sometimes I don't discretely plan the time I need to do this and hope it will take care of itself. Inevitably it does not. The good news is that I managed to write a bit, but I also managed to get some down time. The bad news, if there is any, is that puts me a bit behind schedule. I did run the Bird in Hand Half marathon Saturday. “Run” might be too strong of a word. I hiked it with a couple of the Extra-Milers. They were doing the Run/Walk and I just hung out and talked. I'll do a race report of sorts next episode. My knee is fine from it. I did feel a little soreness and a twinge up on of the hills but nothing lasting. I am very weak in my legs and I don't like the feel of it. I'm going to start a rehab routine on knee and leg strength and flexibility for the rest of September. I think I have another local race to volunteer for next weekend. After that I'm going to run/walk the virtual Boston. Based on my experience here I think it's quite doable without hurting myself. I'll leave you with a lesson from project management. I was reminded of this when driving home this weekend. There's an highway exit from 290 to 495 in Massachusetts. It's different because it's a left exit, meaning it goes from the fast lane of the highway into a sharp off ramp. This is one of the very few left exits in Massachusetts. You can tell it gives people trouble. Drivers are surprised by it. It causes accidents. You can tell as you approach the road is filled with tire marks where people have slammed on the brakes and slid off the road. There are lots of crashes here. I have a theory on how this dangerous intersection came to be. It's the based on the “Iron Triangle” of project management. This is basically a rule of thumb for project managers that every project has three outcomes that you are measured on. First is time. A project needs to be done within a certain schedule. If it is late, it causes problems. The second is cost. Every project has a budget and o one wants to exceed the budget. The third is quality. When the project is complete you need to get the thing that you planned for. A functioning end result. That's what makes project management tricky – you are always balancing time, cost and quality. The iron triangle rule says that you can only really get two of those. For instance, as usually happens, someone comes to you and says they want a different outcome, They want a three story building instead of a 2 story building. That change is going to cost more time or more money or lower quality or a bit of all three. I think the bureaucrats and politicians were in a project meeting around this off ramp. They were probably behind schedule and over budget. Some bright young engineer said “We could skip this whole off ramp design and just make it a left exit. That would put us back on budget.” The result was a perfectly good, ultimately surprising, unnecessarily fatal off ramp. That's what predictably happens when you try to bend the iron triangle of project management. Think about that as you consider that new kitchen. And I'll see you out there. "Fitness is Too Important To Be Boring" About Today's Guest Michael Piercy is the owner-founder of The LAB, a member of the Under Armour training team and a TRX Master Course Instructor and Global Presenter. Mike is the recipient of two of the most prestigious awards in the fitness industry the 2017 IDEA Personal Trainer of The Year Award as well as 2013 TRX Overall Instructor of the Year award given by his peers and colleagues for a great attitude, community spirit, and inspirational teaching. Michael came into the fitness industry full time following a career in professional baseball in which he played for Major league organizations consisting of (Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Montreal Expos. Mike has had the pleasure of working with and creating programs for many athletes from a vast array of major sports including competing athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Stay In Touch With Michael Website Facebook Instagram Show Notes Michael got into fitness to stay off the streets. At the age of 15, his mum signed him up to help out at a local health club to help him stay out of trouble. Michael also became fascinated with his elder brother's weight set and to help him not use it all the time, his mum purchased a Hulk Hogan Kit for him to use. Jump rope, a cassette tape, and some instructions later – Michael began to deepen his commitment to the world of fitness. He got his start in a large gym chain which enabled him to experience the many different aspects of a health club. Michael encourages new trainers to also try this entry point when starting out. You will learn a lot about what to do and then also a lot about what not to do. You can gain a tremendous amount of experience in a shorter period of time when you have so many different elements of fitness in one location. Michael moved into the world of baseball when he was drafted by the pirates. He spent 99.9% of his time in the minor league which taught him many valuable lessons. In the minors, you have to do everything yourself for the most part. You're your own strength coach, you travel a lot, you learn to eat a little bit better and in turn, become your own advocate for a healthier lifestyle. When talking about what Michael learned from his time in baseball that he carried with him into the world of fitness he replied with, “It would be split-second adjustment.” The ability to be able to adjust to certain things when things sometimes go your way and when things sometimes don’t. During his time traveling in baseball he also learned of the importance of being able to get on with many different personalities, cultures, and people from around the globe, this too has also served him well inside of the fitness world. Michael shares how his world expanded when he attended his first fitness conference. He was captivated by the energy and the other attendees and saw there was an entire fitness world outside of New Jersey that was waiting for him to step into. After working hard and applying several times, he became a brand ambassador for TRX and his career was put on a jumpstart. Michael shares the importance of asking the right questions when it comes to building your future and to also set meaningful and inspiring goals. He invites us to do goal setting every year. Write down your goals, write down what you want your life to be like, write down how you want your business to be. Write it down in as much detail and breakdown into as many micro-steps as possible. Just like a fitness program, this is a life program. Another lesson that Michael learned from baseball was that “you have to stay on an even line across.” This meant you can't ever really get caught up in the hype, and can't ever get lost in the doubt. To always believe that you're better than your bad days and to never believe the hype that you're so good on your good days. Remain consistent and keep a consistent work ethic, because the game will humble you. In baseball, the guys in the hall of fame, are only good 30% of the time. Michael talks about the importance of looking at your processes that you create and the people you surround yourself with. The importance of creating a tribe of people who you trust and who you can grow with. He struggles, just like most of us to delegate, but Michael also believes in the delegate or die principle too. Michael encourages us to find our lane, to really discover where and with whom you do your best work. Take the time to figure out where you want to be. And in times of doubt ask yourself these three questions: 1. What are you worried about? 2. What are you protecting? 3. What are you waiting for?

"Master trainer" is a designation given to fitness professionals who educate their peers. Master trainers may lead a day-long workshop on how to use a specific piece of equipment; teach a multi-day certification program; or teach conference sessions on how to apply the latest research to clients' exercise programs. One benefit of becoming a master trainer is that it can help you establish immediate credibility with clients and participants. This episode of the Empowered Entrepreneur podcast features conversations with three different master trainers and fitness studio owners to gain insights into why they became educators, the process of becoming a master trainer, and how being a fitness industry educator complements business. Michael Piercy is the 2017 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and a Master Trainer for TRX and Matrix, in addition to owning The Lab, a studio in Northern New Jersey. Rick Richey and Aaron Drogoszewski are both master trainers for NASM, as well as co-owners of ReCOVER, the first fitness studio in New York City that focuses on recovery strategies. Aaron and Rick are also co-hosts of the Omnia Fitness podcast. This episode of the Empowered Entrepreneur can help you determine whether or not it's worth investing the time and effort into becoming a master trainer. One thing that also helps Jason remain focused on his goal and push through the failures and avoid the shiny objects is knowing his why and how important fitness is to him. He won’t let anything sway him from his path and it shows in his success! What Shiny Object is currently dangling in front of your face like a carrot, distracting you from your real goals? Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Jason Karp Jason shares a brief synopsis of who he is and what he does. Jason’s first NO happened when he was fresh out of college and trying to get personal training positions as a job. One gym wanted Jason to “beef” up to fit the position better, but he refused, instead he found a gym that valued him for the qualities he brought to the table. At a young age, Jason learned that expertise and knowledge don’t really matter in the fitness industry, they’d rather have personality and experience. Jason’s most devastating NO occurred while he was still in college. He was working towards earning his PhD. and failed the oral part of the exam twice, before he finally passed on the third try. He shares the full story in this interview! It was tough for Jason to keep pushing through the failures, but he wasn’t willing to give up all the hard work he’d already put in, so he kept pushing through. The most accomplished NO that Jason experienced wasn’t just one NO, it was a mixture of the many NO’s he received through the years. Jason knew that it was a numbers game and that fitness is his life, so he just kept pushing through every single one of the NO’s he received. When publishing books, Jason received many NO’s from publishers, 5 to 6 per book he’s written. Jason never let any single NO stop him from going on to the next, or the next, or the next publisher. He kept pushing until he found a publisher that wanted to work with him and his book. One thing that Jason has done that’s helped him stand out in his industry is get his PhD. because it shows his expertise & differentiates him from others in the field. Another thing that you can do to make yourself stand out is to find out what people want or need and then fulfill that need. When businesses come and approach Jason and ask him to be an ambassador, he will often tell them NO, because it doesn’t align with what it is he wants to do with his life. He works hard to stay laser focused on his journey and goals. Jason shares what he would tell his younger self. Connect with Jason Karp: Facebook Twitter Instagram REVO₂LUTION RUNNING™ P.S. Meg Haworth, Ph.D. is the private chef to some of the top stars, producers and directors in Hollywood. She specializes in food allergies, healing diets and healthy weight loss with food that tastes so great that her clients don’t feel like they’re missing anything. Her great passion is teaching people with food restrictions how to eat, offering delicious and healthy menu plans, grocery lists and “how to” cooking instructions along with blogs, videos and recipes. Dr. Meg is no stranger to the difficulties of eating for health. After spending her twenties in doctors’ offices with over a dozen illnesses, she decided to take the complementary medical route to get some relief. After her nutritionist told her to remove, gluten, dairy, sugar, corn, citrus, peanuts, caffeine and alcohol from her diet, she saw massive improvements within a week. The problem was she still did not know what to eat. In fact, her first trip to Whole Foods Market ended in tears when she saw the shelves of unrecognizable products in small packages that cost a small fortune. She left the store empty handed and pondered life’s biggest questions: “How am I going to eat pizza now? What am I going to do for a birthday cake? And, how am I going to live without chocolate chip cookies?” Well, that was just crazy talk because cookies were nonnegotiable and she was going to figure out how to have those things no matter what so she headed to the kitchen to figure it out. In the last two decades of eating for food allergies, Dr. Meg has written a cookbook, Done with Dairy. It’s Spartan World Championships Week. And this week we talk to two Spartan World Championships competitors with completely different stories! We start by debuting our new Seasoned Firsts segment. This segment features people who are stepping outside their comfort zones to try new challenges for the very first time. Whether it’s a race, event, competition or new sport, we want to know what drives these people to challenge themselves in this new way. Today we introduce 48-year old Julie Jensen, who is competing in her very first Spartan Race at the notoriously difficult Spartan Race World Championships in Lake Tahoe. In our main interview, we talk to 43-year old Rachel Cosgrove of Santa Clarita, California. Rachel owns and operate Results Fitness, named one of the top ten gyms in the US by Men’s Health Magazine. She’s the best-selling author of The Female Body Breakthrough and Drop Two Sizes. In 2012, Rachel earned the title of IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year. She has competed as a triathlete, a powerlifter, and in the last year, she made a name for herself as a competitive obstacle course racer. Some of Rachel’s recent OCR stats include earning a 3rd place Masters finish at EPIC Series in 2017, a 3rd place age group finish at the 2017 Big Bear Spartan Beast, 2nd in the 40-49 age group at the 2018 SoCal Spartan, and 3rd place in the 40-49 age group at the 2018 Big Bear Spartan Beast, which also punched her ticket to the 2018 Spartan World Championships as an age group competitor.
