I could see the stress having a real wear on his health. Six months before he passed away, I said to him, “If you don't slow down, I sense that you won't be here next year.” He prayed about it and said to me, “I don't sense the Lord telling me to change anything.” And I wept. I just wept. Read more https://pmpod.org/missions-death-widowhood-starting-over/
"In that moment I went into shock. I was so puzzled that I didn't know how to respond, what to say, I just started to cry…There was no room for questions, for discussions, for emotions. It was horrible. I was just the rebellious single woman who was not submitting to leadership." Read more https://pmpod.org/spiritual-abuse/
No interview today, just a fantastic quote from Calvin about what Christ has done for us! pmpod.org
When we hear stories from the field, we usually get the highlights, the “missionary stories.” But spending forty years on the field and raising a family there means there's a whole lot of normal as well. Over working. Conflict with other workers. Marital issues. Questions about kids' education. Rhythms of rest and work. Today on the Pod we follow a family through 40 years of life on and off the field. read more here https://pmpod.org/god-is-doing-something-better/

Today on the Pod, I talk to a guy who has over 30 years of experience ministering in one city. In the late 80s, he planted a church that is still thriving today. Not an easy task in any country, let alone in one of the most unreached countries in the world. My guest shared his thoughts on giving to locals, how to overcome cynicism, and how to deal with conflict with local MBBs. I found our conversation refreshingly deep and mature. I learned a lot and I hope you will too. https://pmpod.org/the-joys-and-pains-of-missions/ Find and sign up for those courses my guest is running from the Institute for the Study of Religion in the Middle East at ISRME.org

In this Pod, I talk to a couple who address the challenges of moving countries and people groups during a season of high success. We also talk about the toll and stress missions has on the body, what kind of boundaries you need to get rid of and which ones you need to keep. Just a little bit of encouragement for you today pmpod.org
Today on the Pod, I walk to a woman who I've been learning from for the past 15 years. So much of my ministry has been shaped by what she has taught me. I'm very excited for you to learn from her as well. We talk about Islam and why Muslims love both the religion and Mohammed so much. We also talk about my guest's experience sitting in on home Quran study groups with Muslim ladies and what we can learn about leading meaningful bible studies. https://pmpod.org/the-human-side-of-missions/
Today on the pod I talk to a guy who is using his professional background to help train some of the poorest and most marginalized people in Africa. Every county, region, and people group comes with its own unique needs, and my guest today explains what some of the Gospel needs are for the church in Africa. He brings a Christ-centered, Gospel-saturated passion to missions in Africa, which is saturated with a kind of prosperity gospel that leaves its people helpfulness and disillusioned. It's a fascinating conversation and I hope you enjoy it. https://pmpod.org/discipling-business-prosperity-gospel-africa/
Today on the Pod, I have a fascinating conversation with a guy who had a massive burnout while on the field. We talk about his time on the field, which was actually a very good time, and how, without warning, he burned out. We also talk about his long road to recovery and how he got through his burnout and depression. https://pmpod.org/burnout-on-the-field/
Today in the Pod, my guest and I cover a ton of ground. We talk about ministry after 70, leading silent retreats, Afghanistan, humility, challenges in ministry, the many positive things going on in missions to Muslims, and so much more. I have a feeling you are really going to love today's podcast. pmpod.org
In this Pod, I talk to a master storyteller. He has literally written a small book on the subject, which you can download on our website. Together we tell thirteen different stories which each help build a bridge into deeper conversations as we share with our friends. I hope you find this format helpful as we all do our best to share the Good News with our friends. https://pmpod.org/thirteen-bridge-stories/
Today on the Pod, I interview myself about distinguishing between Law and Gospel in missions. We talk about how DBS and ZUME struggle to give the believer hope and comfort, and how we can recover a better understanding of how to use the Gospel in discipleship and Church planting. Timeline * 00:00 Intro * O1:23 Introduction to Law & Gospel * 02:30 Common misconceptions around Law & Gospel * 13:00 The Two uses of the Law. We need people reaching all segments of society In this Pod, I talk to a guy who grew up on the field, never really wanted to go back, but ended up getting called back by God, and is now serving in places and ways he never imagined. It's great to hear his story of growing up on the field, studying back in the West, and then heading back out to the Middle East. My guest shares with me some of the differences between being a missionaries kid and being a missionary, as well as some of the struggles he encouraged moving back to the region. We don't want to look at people's physical needs as just a gateway to their spiritual needs. There is a temptation to think that the only thing that matters is peoples spiritual health and everything else is just an excuse to get there. But Jesus himself valued people's physical health and he wanted them to be well. Timeline - 00:00 Intro - 01:00 What was it like growing up on the field? - 04:40 Transitioning from being an MK to living in the West - 12:50 Transitioning to go back out to the mission field - 18:30 Getting married and having a calling with your wife - 22:00 Returning to the field as an adult - 27:20 Did you have a team “storming” phase? - 37:10 What does community look like for you and your family? - 40:30 How do you and your wife minister together? - 46:00 What do you do for your quiet time? https://pmpod.org/healing-bodies-and-souls/
I've never wanted to quit….more than three or four times….a day. Today on the Pod, I talk to a guy who has been in missions for nearly 50 years. Some people get brittle and angry as they get older, but not this guy, he is genuine and humble and has a lot to teach us. Get out your notepad and pen, this is a great interview. "The natural vitality is slowly ebbing away. But I want to be as faithful as possible as long as I can. And it just means I have to hold on to Christ tighter." Timeline - 00:00 Intro - 01:00 How have missions changed over the last 50 years? - 09:10 Has there been a shift in the message of missions? - 18:44 What has the role of prayer been in your life? - 29:40 How have dealt with despair over your lifetime? - 34:55 What is the secret to your longevity? - 39:00 What kind of advice do you have for the worker who feels like a failure? https://pmpod.org/50-years-in-missions/
Discipling in an Honor and Shame Culture Outside of Christ, there are not many ways to deal with shame or be restored In this Pod, I talk to a guy who shares his insights into honor and shame and communal vs individualist cultures. He shares some of his personal stories, struggles, and mistakes, while on the field in a way we can learn from them. We close off the conversation by talking about burnout and fatigue on the field, and what that looked like for him. The whole conversation is powerful and well worth listening to. "Shame only exists in a community. Shame is when you're doing something that is not in the best interest of the community or violates the ethos that holds the community together. So any shame within the community works to destroy something at the fabric of that community." Timeline -00:00 Intro -01:03 What is Deep and Wide Discipleship? -10:40 What did the process of forgiveness look like in discipleship? -13:13 Is vulnerability seen as a weakness in a shame/honor society? -20:40 How do we disciple through persecution? -29:30 What blind spots do westerns have while discipling? -37:00 What is cultural trauma? -50:55 let's talk about burnout on the field https://pmpod.org/discipling-in-an-honor-and-shame-culture/
Pod # 27 The Radical Christian Life A lot of missionaries get a radical call to go to the field, but then don't live their lives radically once they get there In this Pod, I have a conversation with a guy who left the pastorate to move his family to the Middle East. He has had many humbling experiences both on and off the field but has kept his focus on following his calling no matter the cost. He is passionate about living the Radical Christian Life and has a relentless focus on God, the Gospel, and discipleship. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. "After 12 years in the Middle East, when everything was going well; we were being blessed, our ministry was being blessed, we were working in our '10', God called us back to our home country…And it was a deserter. I found myself at 50 years old going from the top of my game to being unemployed." Timeline 00:00 Intro 00:47 What is the Gospel and why do we struggle with this question? 10:46 Moving from Pastor to Missionary 17:30 Dealing with humbling experiences on and off the field 20:10 What's it like teaching the Bible in the Middle East? 28:10 Why is success so hard to measure on the field? 34:35 What is discipleship? 48:00 The Three Holiday Method 50:00 What do you do for your quiet time? https://pmpod.org/the-radical-christian-life/
If I can't remember what we read, how can I share it with others? In this Pod, I talk to a woman who has a lot of experience leading DBS groups and training others to lead them. We walk through the 12 questions of DBS, and my guest shares her insights on each one. Even if you've done DBS training in the past, this conversation will give you fresh and practical insights. "When I was living in the West, we would study books about the Bible that were very much leading to the answers. But through DBS, a new believer can discover the Bible for themselves." Timeline 00:00 Intro 00:50 What is DBS trying to accomplish? 5:31 Leadership and DBS 8:41 The first six DBS questions? 1. What are you thankful for? 2. What are your needs? 3. Do you remember last week's story? 4. Were you able to share last week? 5. What can this group do to meet the needs of others? 6. What did you like about the text? 8. What did you learn about God? 9. What did you learn about humanity? 10. What does this text mean for you personally? 11. What do you change in your life? 12. All of us sudden you realize that you're just doing life, and it's changing lives In this Pod, I sit down with a couple who are raising their seven children in the Middle East. They talk about giving up everything to follow Jesus, the power of hospitality, living by the Spirit, and the daily and weekly rhythms of their lives that make their house so enticing to others. I was challenged by their radical hospitality and I think you will be too. "I used to teach in conferences for four or five hours at a time. But there is nothing like the richness of eating a meal together." Timeline 00:00-00:43 Intro 00:44-4:38 From Cultural Christians to Surrendered Christians 4:39-10:41 What is the Spirit-Filled Life? 10:42-19:35 How did you end up on the field? 19:36-22:26 What is the emphasis of your ministry? 22:47-24:26 The daily practice of family devotions 24:27-26:05 Do you kids give you pushback? 26:06-27:52 Watch me eat and I'll tell you how it tastes 27:53-28:59 The weekly practice of rest 29:00-32:05 The daily practice of saying I'm sorry, and thank you. 32:06-32:59 The weekly practice of worship and communion 33:00-35:26 How much of what you do is by design and how much is just you? 35:27-37:17 What is discipleship? 27:18-47:50 Does constant hospitality ever drain you? 47:51-52:09 Why is what you do so attractive to people? We felt stranded and didn't know what to do. But we saw how God was using us, and completely shifting the focus of the team and the year. In this Pod, I talk to two guys who share their story of how God worked through the pandemic to bring people to faith in Him. It wasn't always roses and sunshine though. My guests take us into their lives when they didn't love each other, struggled to get along, and how doubts about their faith. The Pod is equal parts encouragement and challenge. "The love that we grew for each other over time, was what prepared us to be a home and a family to our Arab friends." In this Pod, I sit down with a guy who grew up his whole life on the field and has rare insight into the life of an MK. We talk about the pressure MKs feel to perform, the lack of identity and belonging, being a “hidden immigrant”, the effect all this has on faith, and what the pathway to real connection and belonging looks like. "I don't know an MK who doesn't have a deep level of grief or bitterness or confusion about their experience." Timeline 00:00-00:43 Intro 00:44-3:10 Born on the field 3:11-6:31 Affects of Parents' attitude towards locals 6:32-9:12 How did you understand your own identity growing up a Third-Culture-Kind (TCK)? 9:13-11:12 The Hidden Immigrant Phenomenon 11:13-12:54 How children understand living between two worlds 12:55-15:30 Did you ever feel resentment for being raised on the field? 15:31-20:20 What is Relational Instability? 20:21-24:24 Struggling to find identity, connection, and belonging 24:25-29:50 Making the transition from the field to the West 29:51-32:34 What effect did your transition have on your faith? 32:35-37:16 The pressure on MKs to be meet unrealistic expectations 37:17-42:40 The path to finding belonging and connection 42:41-49:09 How did people cultivate an environment of acceptance for you? https://pmpod.org/growing-up-on-the-field-2/

In this Pod, my guest has some amazing things to say about discipleship and what to do with a new believer. He also shares some interesting details about how his family is part of his ministry. Then we get down into the weeds of spiritual practices like solitude, fasting, and rest. Every word is worth listening to. In this Pod, my guest tells me about getting kicked out of the country he was serving in, which lead to meeting his wife. He also shares about the differences in being single and married in missions, homeschooling their kids, and what it's like in a massively cross-cultural marriage. At the end of our talk, he shares the driving passion that motivates his ministry. "We felt super spiritual. But there were things, as I looked back, and I think, oh, why did I do this, or why didn't I do that." In this Pod, I talk with a guy who approaches missions from a Reformed Baptist perspective. We have a fascinating conversation about what the church is and isn't, the role of the local church in missions, what he thinks about CPMs and DMMs, how loneliness is apart of his experience, and much more. "People think working with the local church is a waste of time. But I want to see the local church became a model of what a biblical church could be." In this Pod, we talk about the increase of Arabs reaching Arabs, changes in training in missions, defining what discipleship is and why it's so messy. We talked about inconsistencies in our emphasis, sticking close to the Gospel, and some lies workers believe. We also talked about storytelling and why it's so hard for us to do it. "In the Arab culture, there is an amazing amount of distrust, and it is really hard for them to love one another and forgive one another. As expatriates, as Christians coming from cultures where we have already learned that, we can actually live that out with them, and help people really love one another, and be in fellowship with each other." Timeline 1:00-2:25 The changing nature of missions in the Arab world. 2:26-5:00 What kind of changes is training going through in missions? 5:01-7:44 Is there still a need for cross-cultural workers in the Arab world? 7:45-9:00 Are the Arabs you train mostly MBBs or CBBs? 9:01-10:17 What kind of training are Arab believers looking for? 10:18-12:33 What is discipleship? 12:34-17:50 Modeling the Gospel when discipleship is messy? 17:01-19:32 The challenge of connectivity 19:33-20:34 A lie workers believe is “I have to stay connected to everyone back home” 20:35-22:46 Lies Workers Believe #1 Language will come by just being on the field 22:47-23:33 Advice for people who have plateaued in language learning 23:34-27:54 Lies Workers Believe #2 If I just become like the culture I'll see fruit 27:55-32:27 Lies Workers Believe #3 The “If I just had…” lie 32:28-40:15 Lies Workers Believe #4 The Work/Rest lie. In this Pod, I talk to a woman who will blow your mind. We talk about the dangers of social media in missions, as well as the positive impact it's having. We talked about suffering and the cost of discipleship for Arabs, the challenges DBS leaves us with, the value of coaching for workers ministering in hard places, finding purpose and meaning in missions when not much is going on. And so much more. "They've started to do some really good work, they've opened up a great English center, maybe they're running kids clubs, a sports center. But they've lost the edge of the Gospel. The CP coach's goal is to keep the edge of the gospel sharp. We need platforms, we need ways to meet people. But if we lose our intentionality in sharing the Gospel and discipling people, we might as well just call ourselves English teachers or sports coaches." Timeline 1:00-7:08 Is Netflix destroying missions? 7:09-11:45 What is the positive side of media in missions? 11:46-14:52 The challenges to online discipleship 14:53-18:45 Do we overlook the cost of following Jesus in our discipleship? 18:46-24:16 Do we pursue rapid growth at the cost of good discipleship? 24:17-28:29 What is coaching for missionaries? 28:30-33:45 Common issues workers face when they seek out a coach 33:46-37:25 Discipling influencers vs marginalized people 37:26- Does our longing to see a movement harm our ability to see individuals? 38:18-39:25 What are the trends shaping missions today? 39:26-50:18 How do you stay long-term without getting bored or burning out? 50:19-55:48 Why do missionaries find it easier to share the Gospel than to experience it? In this Pod, I talk to someone who clearly knows a lot about doing missions in the Arab World. We talked about forgiveness in the Arab context, seeing groups of people come to faith, some keys to longevity, and bringing the Gospel to the least reach women in the region. We also take an important look at raising children on the field. "We both have a very strong sense that we're not leaving unless God calls us to something else. We don't have the attitude that, well, we're staying here until we feel like it's not fun anymore and then we go on to something new." Timeline 1:00-2:13 23 years of on-field learning 2:14-5:55 What are your gauges for success? 5:56-11:12 What stirs your heart, and what are the mundane parts of missions? 11:13-16:00 What struggles do you face bringing the Good News to women in rural villages 16:01-19:59 How hard is it for a woman in a rural Arab setting to come to faith? 20:00-22:59 How do you last long-term without becoming cynical? 23:00-26:57 What character qualities are you looking for in people coming out to the Middle East? 26:58-30:32 What does Islam look like in rural communities? 30:33-32:33 How much superstition do you see in the villages? 32:34-34:18 What does the Gospel look like for women in rural settings? 34:19-37:31 Making the switch from Guilt/Innocence to Honor/Shame 37:32-43:40 The Story of the Parodical Son for an Arab 43:41-48:11 Raising Children in the Middle East 48:12-53:54 Thinking through education for your children on the field 53:55-57:12 Dealing with children becoming young adults on the field https://pmpod.org/called-to-something-great/
In this Pod, we talked about the lack of women leadership in missions, as well as the lack of resources and strategies that take women's issues in mind. We also take a deep dive into surviving reentry, as well as a very honest conversation about sexual harassment on the field.
