Strangely death is the only thing that is certain about our life, and yet it is one of the things we rarely talk about and find incredibly difficult to understand. In this episode, my guest, Joan Prentice, shares about the devastating time of her life when her son died suddenly, aged 17. This is a conversation where we honour what happened, and allow Joan to talk about this distressing time of her life that she's rarely talked about. It's a reminder that whilst there's so much in life that will be unknown, it's not a reason to stop living. Joan shares about: The despair and shock when there was so much that was unknown regarding his death The importance of seeking help when we need it The cost of hiding and covering up pain Finding hope, light and pleasure in the dark times. Josephine in her own words:   “I'm a middle aged mother of three. Also, adventurer, rock climber, former Mountain Rescuer, wilderness addict, lover of Nature, doer. Oh, and professional author and award-winning photographer. Many hats, but a common thread of being outdoors, helping people and sharing a love of wild places. Having moved on from the confines of Mountain Rescue, I am on a journey with Mountain Training Association to get qualified so that I can introduce people, and especially women, to the indescribable benefits of outdoor adventure.  Too many women feel that it is beyond them. I want to show that it is not. I love polar adventure and have been to Norway many times and skied across Svalbard on a 9 day expedition.  Mountains, moors, wilderness, old mines and rock faces all vie for my time so that it feels there is never enough!  My mantra is: “Do it now. Life is too short.” I am not one for “ests” the longest/fastest/highest etc. To me, it is all about being there, in that moment. My work as an author and publisher includes the Dartmoor Tors Compendium, the Official Visitor Guide to Dartmoor National Park and the Geology of Dartmoor. I also design unique infographics and poster art about Dartmoor in particular. My photography, when not illustrating books, is photographing architectural properties and interiors. Mainly though, photography is about showing how beautiful and amazing our world is.” *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, airing every Tuesday at 7am UK time. These charges include felony murder, false imprisonment, concealing the death of another, tampering with evidence, and false statements. Cho was allegedly lured to Gwinnett County under the guise of joining a religious group called "Soldiers of Christ" but ended up being malnourished, beaten, and ultimately died. Harris Elementary School, Partee Elementary School, Paul Duke STEM High School, and Pharr Elementary School have been named 2023 Title I Distinguished Schools, signifying that they are in the top 5% for both Schoolwide Program and Targeted Assistance Program schools in the state and have the highest absolute performance for all students based on statewide assessments. These four schools are among a group of 78 that received this designation. Additionally, Central Gwinnett High School, Duluth High School, Paul Duke STEM High, and Rosebud Elementary School are 2023 Title I Reward Schools, ranking in the top 5% of Title I schools in the state for improving the performance of all students. They are planning to convert the intersections at Kilcrease and Carl-Bethlehem Roads in Barrow County into grade-separated interchanges. The changes will affect drivers traveling to or from Athens, including those visiting the University of Georgia. GDOT is soliciting feedback on various aspects of the project, such as the construction timeline, traffic mitigation, and costs. The proposed changes would allow for access to Kilcrease Road via an interchange with roundabouts but would eliminate direct access to Carl-Bethlehem Road from the highway. GDOT is promoting these changes as a way to enhance safety and accommodate population growth in the area. A virtual presentation and Q&A session are scheduled for October 19 to provide further details and address questions. In this episode I cover a recent news report of a death during "cold water therapy" in the United Kingdom. Cold exposure is currently dramatically overhyped online, and misinformation on the topic is rampant among the top health influencers. This misinformation misrepresented the balance of harms and risks from cold exposure therapy, undermined this woman's ability to rationally judge whether the intervention might produce more benefit than harm (or vice versa), undermined her decisionmaking autonomy, and ultimately resulted in her death. Health misinformation needs to be curtailed to empower individuals to make free decisions and reduce harm to both individuals and society.===Like, comment, subscribe. For more, find me at:PODCAST The Kevin Bass ShowYOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/user/kbassphiladelphiaWEBSITE http://thedietwars.comTWITTER https://twitter.com/kevinnbass/https://twitter.com/healthmisinfo/INSTAGRAM https://instagram.com/kevinnbass/TIKTOK https://tiktok.com/@kevinnbassAnd above all, please donate to support what I do:PATREON https://patreon.com/kevinnbass/DONATE https://thedietwars.com/support-me/

I'm excited to invite you to my conversation with Clara Infante. She is an artist, maker, marketing professional and mother to three young boys. After the birth of her first son, Clara and her husband left Los Angeles and moved back to her home country of Spain.  Clara was born in Barcelona, but grew up in Miami. Her dad is from Spain and her mom is French, and she grew up speaking Spanish, Catalan, French, and English.Clara didn't thrive in a school environment and decided to leave high school and not go to college. A lover of music, she opted to take a job working in a night club and managing their social media presence. She began her job at the infancy of social media and learned quickly how powerful Myspace was to build community and expand audience reach for musical artists. She quickly became the liaison for all musicians that played at the venue and pitched her social media management services to bands when she would drive them to the club from the airport. Eventually she was able to move to Los Angeles and became a founding member of an agency representing artists' presence online. While working as a marketing director for a record label, she met her husband, British musician SOHN. It was an instant connection and they very quickly were married and expecting their first baby. Soon after her son arrived, Clara started thinking about making a major life shift. Her previous lifestyle didn't really fit with being a mom and so she decided to leave her corporate job at Sony. Her and her partner wanted to plant permanent roots somewhere but the cost of real estate in Los Angeles was out of reach and they weren't sure if they wanted to raise kids there. While touring rural real estate listings online, Clara stumbled upon her perfect affordable "Los Angeles style" home in the coastal mountains of Spain. The house was an architectural gem - a one-of-a-kind midcentury modern - built almost entirely off-grid from local materials. They moved in only 10 days before the delivery date of their second son. Moving to the countryside awakened Clara's creative side. She realized that being a mom wasn't enough to fill her cup. She knew she didn't want to work in music anymore - and now she had the financial safety net of her husband's job to be able explore her passions.  Clara is candid about the privilege she was afforded that gave her space to explore and experiment. That sense of stability and freedom is what allowed her to open up to her creative side, without initially feeling the pressure to earn an income from it. She started off reselling her children's used clothes online, and honed her skills as a photographer. She then became interested natural dyeing, and started doing that as well, posting her process online. She learned that she thrives off of feedback in her work and that, in turn, helped her gain exposure along the way. Nowadays, Clara's business is focused on making hand-made crayons and one-of-a-kind sculptural candles - all from natural and mostly local materials. She will often go on little adventures in her landscape to gather plant and earth materials to use as natural pigments and dyes in her products. Each creation is as much a piece of her as it is the landscape she calls home. This is a story about transition, the endless creative pursuit, the importance of filling your cup, and a real talk fairytale of leaving LA for rural Spain. I'm Nelsie Spencer. I'm a writer, performer, writing teacher/mentor/coach. And a podcaster. I have over 30 years of experience as a writer: I produced a playwright (My Heart Belongs to Daddy), an award-winning screenwriter (Valley Inn), and a published novelist (The Playgroup). My writing career began when I wrote myself a role with my best friend Laury Marker. Our play, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, premiered at Lucille Lortel's White Barn Theatre in Westport, Ct. And had 3 more sold-out and critically acclaimed productions! Along the way, we worked with producer Dash Epstein and director Morton DeCosta (both Tony-Award winners). Since My Heart Belongs to Daddy, I've written stand-up, become a published novelist (The Playgroup) and worked as a radio talk show host with comics Cory Kahaney and Maureen Langan. Nora Ephron called my first screenplay, A Girl's Best Friend, "a brilliant premise and a wonderful screenplay." When she took the script to Sony and they passed on it, she told them, "You're idiots! Read it again!" God bless you, Nora! In 2015 the award-winning indie film, Valley Inn (co-writer with Kim Swink), was released. My time as a radio talk show host, stand-up comic, and actor made podcasting an easy, fun, and inevitable next step. Last year, I created Losing It! with Nelsie Spencer, life lessons from some of my favorite losers. After taking a few decades off from serious acting, I made my way back to the stage last year when I wrote and performed Day of the Dead Daddy, my solo show. It premiered in NYC at The Chain Studio Theatre. This year, I was honored to be invited to perform my show (via Zoom) at The Marsh Theatre's International Solo Show Festival where Day of the Dead Daddy won an Honorable Mention. I plan to bring the show to Edinburgh for their Fringe Festival next summer. Throughout my unorthodox career path I've met and worked with many interesting and influential people such as super-agent Ari Emanuel, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, and Oscar winners Jane Fonda and Mary Tyler Moore. I've been helping other writers find and hone their stories and their voices since 2006. My current mission: To create community, support, and inspiration for the writer.

Claire pretty much embodies the very concept of mother food as her cooking and food writing is so much focused on the family kitchen. Her cooking is very autobiographical documenting her experience as a mother of 3 girls. She's an author of 5 cookbooks all of which have the home kitchen as their main location. So I highly recommend her books to all the parents listening to this podcast. Because her books really do have the answers to so many questions we often face in our kitchens - full of practical advise, seasonal, family orientated with practicality, flavour richness and nutrient value in mind. Claire is a really passionate chef and food writer, and as you will hear, her knowledge of and her delight in cooking is so intoxicating! I just loved talking to her and then coming back to this conversation while eating the podcast, as it gave me a very much needed boost of confidence, reassurance and inspiration to get me out of my culinary rut, in which I have been finding myself a bit too often this autumn. i loved learning how her professional life developed and flowed into her personal life almost seamlessly. I really have been chaining my mindset around what being a working mother means to me and I have been, looking for examples in other women, as I am still new to the idea of embracing home as my creative space, and of not clearly defining work time and family time. So Claire's example was so inspiring and brought many smiles to my face as we were talking. Claire's new book - Home Cookery Year - is an ode to the simple joys of cooking as well as to the sheer diversity of reasons and occasions we enter out kitchen. So Claire truly knows what she is talking about when it comes to family cooking. This episode is full of wonderful tips and ideas, and if I were to encourage you to take away one thing from this conversation it would be the joy and the playfulness around food, and the idea of not taking food and yourself in the act of feeding too seriously - something I am certainly guilty of a lot - so for me it was a very welcomed reminder that a good meal is a lot more simple than the ambitious cook inside my head thinks it is. In light of the recent Mother's Day celebration, Wade appropriately interviews a tough mother of three. Whitney is a stay at home mom who decided that she needed something that was going to engage her physically and mentally — and tennis just wasn't going to cut it. In 2005, after her youngest child went off to Kindergarten, she decided to truly put this plan into action and entered a nearby martial arts studio. Since then, she's earned her black belt in Kenpo Karate.   Something incredibly impressive about Whitney is her ability and determination to persevere through nearly anything. She broke two of her ribs in the middle of her 8-hour black belt exam — and yet, she continued on and finished!   In this episode, Whitney speaks about her start in martial arts, what her first class was like, her journey to getting her black belt in Kenpo, and her stint in teaching Kenpo and her own, unique style. She also shares her wisdom on perseverance, the importance of asking questions and considering the ‘why' during training, and her advice for those who are nervous — but interested — in pursuing a martial art.   Key Takeaways: [1:06] About this week's guest, Whitney. [2:06] Welcoming Whitney to the podcast. [2:29] When and why Whitney got started in the martial arts. [3:17] What was Whitney's first class like in Kenpo karate? [23:10] Whitney's advice to those who are considering taking up a martial art.
