My name is Cody Thorson and I’m the host of “Serves You Right From Women and A Mic” accompanied each episode with a handful of amazing women. Myself and these women all work or have worked in the food service industry as servers. Now that really doesn’t h
This is not the end. As we draw the curtains on our last episode of Serves You Right From Women & A Mic we set the stage for our new podcast that will be released next month. The Dumpster Girls will be airing before the end of this year. In this episode we are grateful for the learning experiences we have had, so lets move to the future with some excitement and confidence knowing that the last year and a half has taught us more and brought us together.
How eye opening it is when you get told what your favorite song actually means. Who knew you were rocking out to something totally different than what you thought. In this episode we go over some of the songs we grew up with that we had no idea what they meant until later in our lifes. We also talk about some of our favorite nurshery rhymes and the true stories behind those as well.
Drugs, drugs, drugs. Today we're having a conversation about drugs and conversations we're having with our kids. And a little back story about us.
Whats Girl Power got to do with it? In this episode we cover the term Girl Power and what it means to us.
Happy Halloween listeners! In this episode we all tell our scariest moments as well as some funny scary ones as well.
This episode start to finish was filled with silly stories about doctors visits, allergies, and crazy neighbors. Laughing the whole way through, enjoy!
Another episode of random thoughts. From going to a upcoming Blink 182 concert to how a servers appearance impacts the percentage of tips they make. And everything in-between. Fortunately for our listeners we have a good time in this episode as we count with only 5 or 6 episodes left til we start our new spin-off podcast The Dumpster Girls.
Navigating family in a typical setting can be difficult but throw in divorce and remarriage and it always becomes more so. So in this episode we're all about what's going on in our families and bits of other stuff too. Mixed families always have an interesting dynamic and ours are no different.
This episode is all about fairy tales Disney has turned into cartoons or live action movies. We wanted to dive a little into the original stories. From Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson to historical backgrounds. You'll probably be surprised by what we found. Picking out a few of our favorites to share with you. We actually stayed on track for 95% of the episode this time. Join us for the true tales behind the tales.
Today's episode was a cluster ---- of conversations. We jumped all over the place. Join is for another entertaining episode of SYRFWAAM. Where we'll keep you guessing on what direction we'll head in next.
Culture is how we live, work, commune with others. It changes all the time. In the US our culture changes from state to state, city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood. While some changes are positive others are negative. We talk about some of these on this episode.
Work your wage or quiet quitting go hand in hand. There's a misconception that it's about being lazy. The reality is there are those of us who will no longer let companies take advantage of free labor. Above and beyond is status quo. It no longer sets you apart. However working to death isn't going to cut it either. That's what we get into this episode. Coming at it from the restaurant/hospitality perspective.
We can't believe it's been a year already. Crazy to think this all started to meet people and forge friendships. We have learned a lot this past year. Going from 6 participants to 4. It sure has been fun. Thank you to all who have listened and are growing the podcast. We have a few changes coming shortly, which we'll announce when w shake out all the details. Thank you again to all our listeners and we are looking forward to entertaining you in the future.
Poor Cody's brain completely lost control today. We all have those days. So you get to listen to Cheryl rattle off dates. I'd say we're having an off day but everyday is like that. There are so many squirrel moments that I'm not even sure what we talked about. However make sure to catch us next week for our year in review.
Fresh haircuts, bad tippers, unwanted hugs, and misters. When we fly by the seat of our pants we never know where the conversations will go. This week we enjoyed each others company and laughed a lot with and at each other.
Deep thoughts by the serves you right women. OK maybe not deep thoughts probably more like random thoughts. There's a lot going on in our heads, so we'd thought we'd share some. DISCLAIMER: No children or husband's where harmed in the making of this episode
We're rounding out the women's right series by talking about the government. More specifically how much control the government should have in our lives. Do the people incharge wield their power appropriately or take advantage of it? I think we've done a pretty good job staying on point for this series. Thank you for listening.
Reproductive rights are a hot topic these days. So many opinions fly about. What's right and what's wrong. Who's wrong and who's right. The divisiveness that politicians play. We give our opinions on the subject in this episode. An important topic that needs to talked about.
Women have only had the right to vote for a hundred and two years. That's less then half the time the US has been a country. What are we doing with that right? How well are we utilizing it. Obviously this episode is all about what we think on the subject. Politics has become a taboo topic. Why? It doesn't make sense that something so important isn't talked about.
We're continuing on in our women's rights series with women's rights in the workplace. It's hard to believe that most laws referring to the workplace and women have only really been in play for about 50 years. In this episode we're just talking about what we think about it all. Hope you enjoy!
This week we are kicking off our women's right series. This episode is a brief timeline of events from 1776 til now. There's a lot of talk about what's currently going on in the U.S. We thought, what the hell, we'll add our two cents. We're women, we have opinions and love to give them. These next few episodes will be interesting because we all have very different point of views and backgrounds on these various sub topics coming up over the next few weeks.
We went a little deeper in this episode on body image. One thing is universal, we all have a body and we all have opinions on what the perfect image of our body is. The flaws that we see in the mirror come in many forms. In this episode we touch on a few of those things and of course trail off in a few different directions but it all comes back to body image.
We're back to bouncing around. Taking about trashed kid's room. Why is the QR code for menus and payment is such a difficult leap for a society that is already on their phones all the time? Circled back to finance to give our listeners ideas for tip and bill tracking. We are all over the place, however, it's still pretty entertaining. Thank you for joining us on this trip down the rabbit hole.
Everyone needs money to live. As servers most of us are in a unique situation of getting paid daily. Since inflation is a thing right now, we thought we would give you some tips and talk about saving money. We just gave a few that have been helpful to us. We're definitely not financial experts but everyday people just trying to live our best lives like you.
Self care is something highly talked about but rarely done. This is an important practice that as we get older gets more important. If your young, work on getting into the habit, however, you're never to old to start. In this episode we talk about and give ideas for Self care. What it is and what it isn't. It's become extremely commercialized and done in a way that seems unattenable. We're hoping to change that and help you take better care of yourself.
We all have pet peeves. At work, at home, out in the world. As long as we are not living as hermits, others are going to annoy us. This episode we giving our listeners a glimpse into our pet peeves. Honestly this probably doesn't even scratch the surface. Especially when working in hospitality the list is endless.
Do you ever sit and wonder...would it be a good idea if I worked with my significant other or even a family member? Well we've got an episode for you. In this episode we talk about how we feel about working with those closest to us. Whether or not it's a good idea. As always we add some humor and personality to this subject! Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a restaurant manager? The role of a front of house manager in a restaurant is to supervise and co-ordinate the entire front of house team. He or she ensures the client receives a warm welcome and that service runs smoothly along with also carrying out administrative tasks. In this episode I interview Zach Marinig, a long time restaurant manager and get to hear his outlook on and even some stories from his job experience.
Well folks in this episode we dove straight into the deep end, no floaties! We're telling stories, sharing kiddo accomplishments and of course... there's so much going in the world that it's hard not to talk about. I do have to admit We're a little more tame in this one. Stayed up way to late drinking and watching tiktok.
Relationships that matter.... There are so many relationships in our lives, family, friends, co-workers. This episode is about our friendships with other women. There have been so many studies done on this topic and of course my love of tic toc has brought them to life. We decided to talk about how important is it is for women to have strong relationships with other women. These are the relationships that help ground us and keep our heads on straight.
Are we fake at work? Some people are completely different outside of work, some are the same. This episode we're doing a brief break down of what we think on this subject. From work appropriate to faking out even your coworkers. We touch it all ;)
Accountability is the age old struggle. Who, what, when, where is actually accountable for what is going on in our lives. In a way that only the women of SYRFWAAM can dish, we talk all about it. Enjoy!
50 hr work weeks, and we were still somehow able to get an interview with this guy. In this episode we chat with Lenny Desmanias, a sous chef, a friend, and a few other things we learn about him in this episode that we had no idea he even did. So glad we were able to have Lenny on to get his inside perspective and thoughts on working as a chef in a pretty busy restaurant.
Ever wonder what it's like to be a bartender?? What they do? What their actual job consists of? Well in this episode we talk a little about all that. We give you a brief description of what our job title entails and some funny antidotes to go with it.
Back of house vs. Front of house... fight. Anyone else get a mortal kombat throw back? Haha. In this episode we talk about the front house's perception of back of house. This seems to be the age old conversation that everyone in the restaurant industry has... The question of who does more? Who's more important? Whos job is more difficult? The reality is we all have our roles to play and we're all in it together.
So we did not have a topic for this episode so we just decided to just chat. This is our random conversation pt 2, because let's be honest we knew this would happen again but it was so worth it.
Not sure how to explain this episode except that it was a lot of fun to record. So listen or don't but if you do i'm sure you'll enjoy our random funny conversations that segway so well.
So we all know tipping is a controversial subject. So today we kind of break it down a little. We give super brief history because that in itself is controversial and can be a sensitive subject that we don't necessarily wish to dive deep into on this Podcast because that's not our area of expertise. We are not trying to change your mind on whether to agree or not to agree with tipping, just hoping that you have a better understanding of why it is something that we do today.
So after last weeks management review, we decided to discuss our perception of what a good server looks like to us. Good and bad server qualities along with some stories as well.
In this episode we go over the qualities we think a good manager has to have to succeed in that position. We've got a lot to say on this subject along with some stories to add to the fun.
While we entertain you all with stories of past experiences, this episode, can be summed up as don't be an asshole. We all have bad days and do the wrong thing. However, in hospitality, for some reason this gives people the green light to lose their minds and forget that they are talking to fellow human beings. Don't be that person. Golden rule: Treat others how you want to be treated.
Let's talk about sex....baby. You may think we've gone off the beaten path. Besides alcohol and drugs, sex is another thing that happens alot in the hospitality industry. What can we say, super long and weird hours bring people "together"! In this episode we're talking about the things we wish we knew before we took things to the next level. I'm sure this is the first of many conversations on this topic.
We all have stories from our jobs. In our episode today we are highlighting some of our favorite stories. Not just about the people we serve but us as guests as well. This isn't the first time we've told stories and definitely won't be the last!
Ever wonder what your servers and bartenders think of certain behaviors? Want to know what you should do as a guest? On today's episode you get a glimpse on all our thoughts and feelings on these matters. As well as a few ramblings and rants. If nothing else, you'll be entertained. What can we say, we love to talk!
We're starting out the New Year on a positive note. We're sharing stories about guests that have positively impacted us, for the most part. (If you've been listening to us for a while you know how much we like our rabbit holes:) These guests are the people that Make coming to work a lot more fun and some days a lot easier.
