He is best known for his career in Australia, on Melbourne radio and television. He served as a Senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019. Hinch was elected to the Senate representing Victoria as the head of Derryn Hinch's Justice Party, at the 2016 federal election. Aged 72 at the time, Hinch was, when elected, the oldest federal parliamentarian ever to be elected for the first time. He lost his senate seat in the 2019 election. He remained host of his weekly program Hinch Live until the election campaign period officially commenced, in a decision supported by Sky News Live. He has been the host of 3AW's Drive radio show, and a National Public Affairs commentator for the Seven Network on Sunday Night, Today Tonight and Sunrise. The Garma Festival is being held over the next few days in Arnhem Land. There will be a great deal of talk this year about the Voice. Anthony Albanese will speak on Saturday, but he won't announce the date for the referendum. Peter Dutton isn't attending. Meanwhile in parliament this week the opposition has sought to turn the discussion of the Voice to the issue of treaty, also a feature of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. But the government wants to keep the debate strictly to the Voice, dodging questions about treaty where it can. In this podcast Thomas Mayo, a signatory of the Uluru Statement and one of the leaders of the yes campaign, and Derryn Hinch, former prominent broadcaster and a former crossbench senator, join us to argue for the yes and no sides respectively.

In this episode of the Fifth Estate Podcast, Cameron discusses the following.* Victoria Police not being able to find enough recruits. (Is it really because of the "tightened" job market, or is it because VicPol are a law unto themselves?)* Is Victoria Police testing the water with their Firearm Prohibition Order for someone who isn't in organised crime?* Speed cameras are nothing more than revenue raisers.* Supreme Leader Andrews spells Olivia Newton-John's name wrong on twitter and doesn't correct the post. (Is this acceptable for someone who has a multi-million dollar PR team?)* Victoria's public service wages bill blows out to $35bn.* Should people in the public service be excluded from voting due to a conflict of interest?* Is 78 too old to stand as a candidate for election, like Derryn Hinch will be in November?* Is it time to abolish local government as a paid role, and make it a voluntary position?* How long till Australia's blue and red ensign, and Eureka Stockade Southern Cross flag are listed as "extremist" flags, if they aren't already.
Since 2016 Victorians convicted of murder could not be released on parole if they have not disclosed the location of the remains of their victim/s - the Derryn Hinch's Justice Party MP for Northern Victoria says this still empowers a murderer to inflict hardship on victims' families and wants them to remain beyond their court-imposed term in jail, potentially for life, if they do not disclose the location of remains

When People in Glass Houses was first released in July 2007, Australian ABC show Enough Rope and its host Andrew Denton wanted exclusive rights to interview me. That interview was intense for me having never done any media and starting on TV was a lot. Derryn Hinch is an Australian icon for an 80's kid like me. He was a late night current affairs host who famously served a jail sentence for releasing a suppressed name of a pedophile before the courts. I really wanted to get this opportunity and it was only in the second week of publicity that he showed interest. 15 years later, he and I are still saying the same things. And I'm still grateful to chat to this Aussie hero!

Whistleblowers say Victorian hospitals can't tackle massive surgery backlogs or properly staff wards and emergency departments. Victorians reeling from the rising cost of living will soon be smashed by power bill hikes worth about $60 a year. Derryn Hinch is an Australian journalist whose career has spanned almost six decades. He's recently made a return to the small screen as the host of Hinch on Sky News Australia after spending three years as a Senator in Canberra as leader of Derryn Hinch's Justice Party. Derryn started his career as a journalist at the Taranaki Herald in New Zealand when he was 15 and hasn't stopped working since (apart from a couple of stints in prison after being convicted of contempt of court). In this episode he talks about reporting on some of the biggest events of the 20th Century, why he lied about his age for the first part of his career, why going to prison appealed to the journalist in him and the pain of having a show you love cancelled. Derryn's story is a fascinating tale of guts, talent, resilience all mixed with a bit of being in the right place at the right time. After listening to this you'll know exactly why he's still on our screens all these decades later. Episode show notes: http://rachelcorbett.com.au/ygss/derryn-hinch About the host... After spending a year immersed in the parliamentary machine, broadcaster-turned-senator Derryn Hinch is keen to see a more efficient Senate. His suggestions include shortening the length of speeches – and thus the opportunity for filibusters – and trimming supplementary questions. He's frustrated by the government's “Dorothy Dixers”. “It's a waste of time,” he says. As the debate around same-sex marriage continues to affect the government, Hinch has made clear his support for reform. But he found himself receiving some flak when he voted with the government in a division – which was defeated – to allow debate on its plebiscite bill. He had every intention of voting against the bill, but thought discussion should have been permitted. On the dual citizenship imbroglio, the former New Zealand citizen made sure he put his affairs in order before the election. He got a backhanded compliment: “If the Human Headline can check it out and fix it, it can't be that hard”.
