Few Australian media figures have been as divisive—or as influential—as Derryn Hinch. A broadcaster, newspaper columnist, television host, campaigner and senator, Hinch built a career on exposing injustice, challenging authority and often testing the limits of journalism itself. Following his recent passing, Professor Andrew Dodd from the University of Melbourne joins us to reflect on Hinch’s complicated legacy and what it tells us about Australian media today. Derryn Hinch was one of Australia's most recognisable media personalities, earning the nickname ;the Human Headline; through decades in radio, television and print journalism. Throughout his career, Hinch became known for an unapologetically campaigning style of journalism. He championed victims of crime, pushed for tougher laws around child sex offenders, challenged suppression orders and repeatedly argued that the public’s right to know should outweigh legal restrictions. His career was also marked by controversy. He was imprisoned for contempt of court after breaching suppression orders, dismissed from broadcasting roles on multiple occasions and criticised for blurring the line between reporting, opinion and activism. In 2016, Hinch entered federal politics, serving as a Senator for Victoria and continuing many of the campaigns that had defined his media career. In his The Conversation article, Professor Andrew Dodd argues that Hinch represented a distinctive model of journalism—one fuelled less by strict notions of objectivity than by a deeply personal sense of justice. One of Melbourne's most influential voices on radio, 3AW's Morning show presenter Tom Elliott is our guest on this episode to chat all things media. Tom started his radio career at 3RRR before moving to 3AW to present the weekend program. His career progressed when he took over the Drive show from the outgoing Derryn Hinch and he's now the morning show presenter, after the iconic Neil Mitchell vacated the chair. Tom has a calmness and consistency in his approach to radio presenting, which has afforded him a lot of success in the radio ratings. When you are the son of two high profile figures, you would think naturally your life would be on the road to fame, but Tom chose radio because it had a degree of anonymity and privacy. Derryn Nigel Hinch (born 9 February 1944) is a New Zealand-born media personality, politician, actor, journalist and published author. He is best known for his career in Australia, on Melbourne radio and television. He served as a Senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019. Hinch was elected to the Senate representing Victoria as the head of Derryn Hinch's Justice Party, at the 2016 federal election. Aged 72 at the time, Hinch was, when elected, the oldest federal parliamentarian ever to be elected for the first time. He lost his senate seat in the 2019 election. He remained host of his weekly program Hinch Live until the election campaign period officially commenced, in a decision supported by Sky News Live. He has been the host of 3AW's Drive radio show, and a National Public Affairs commentator for the Seven Network on Sunday Night, Today Tonight and Sunrise.  Hinch has been convicted of contempt of court three times, serving two prison sentences and one sentence of house detention.

The Garma Festival is being held over the next few days in Arnhem Land. There will be a great deal of talk this year about the Voice. Anthony Albanese will speak on Saturday, but he won't announce the date for the referendum. Peter Dutton isn't attending. Meanwhile in parliament this week the opposition has sought to turn the discussion of the Voice to the issue of treaty, also a feature of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. But the government wants to keep the debate strictly to the Voice, dodging questions about treaty where it can. When People in Glass Houses was first released in July 2007, Australian ABC show Enough Rope and its host Andrew Denton wanted  exclusive rights to interview me. That interview  was intense for me having never done any media and starting on TV was a lot.  Derryn Hinch is an Australian icon for an 80's kid like me. He was a late night current affairs host who famously served a jail sentence for releasing a suppressed name of a pedophile before the courts.  I really wanted to get this opportunity and it was only in the second week of publicity that he showed interest.  15 years later, he and I are still saying the same things.  And I'm still grateful to chat to this Aussie hero!
