Danielle Laidley is no stranger to the media. As a player in the West Coast Eagles' inaugural team and then after being traded to North Melbourne Football Club, Dani experienced two very different levels of media interest in AFL players. Then as coach of North Melbourne, Dani experienced some of the toughest scrutiny from sports media and fans. And in 2020, she experienced the voracity of the media when Victoria Police leaked images of Dani to the media and revealed to the public that Dani was undergoing a gender transition, having suffered gender dysphoria throughout her life. The coverage was frenzied and prolonged. This week, Nic Hayes is joined by Danielle Laidley who shares her experience in the media across her career, and what she's doing in the media now that she's taken back the narrative, working in transgender advocacy and as a regular sports columnist. Dani and Nic discuss: What it's like to be in the cut and thrust of weekly games and media spotlight as an AFL player and coach, riding the waves of speculation and interest in North Melbourne moving to the Gold Coast, her teammate Wayne Carey, and the scrutiny following lost games among many other fascinating moments in her career How she flew under the radar in Melbourne after being traded from West Coast to North Melbourne How writing a book and filming documentary Revealed – Danielle Laidley: Two Tribes in partnership with Eddie McGuire all came about Dani's pick for top five NMFC players and her pick for the GOAT – “you could kick the ball anywhere, and he'll mark it” The Experts Podcast is hosted by media professional and commentator, Nic Hayes. The guest this week was scheduled in for the second half of the year not today. There was no way that this person was going to have enough media in their portfolio to be able talk about their experiences, their feelings, their concerns, and challenges. When you are a workplace expert, and the federal government is pushing through the right to disconnect legislation then you are going to be busy taking media calls. Steve Sharp is a culture curator and as mentioned earlier a workplace expert that has over twenty years' experience working in BIG corporate. Steve was introduced to Media Stable by his mentor and professional speaker Amanda Stevens and has had some wild media experience in the last month. We had to get him on the podcast to talk us through the emotions, feelings, concerns and worries that Steve has experienced with this quick success. When the government is trying to put legislation through that impacts working Australians you are going to get a reaction, and this has been big. The media is always looking for sound, direct and quality observations from the community and Steve ticked all these boxes. Radio and television came calling from the Media Board and in true Steve fashion he said YES to them all. Steve had to work through issues of imposter syndrome, panic, fear, and to get his message right. The nature of media is that the conversation can take any direction particularly on talkback radio. The ability to stay focused, clear messaging and staying true to your values is more difficult when a microphone and camera thrusted under your nose with a national audience. He did it with flying colours and this is a great listen to those that are considering jumping in or jump out. Steve was also an attendee of Sydney #MeetTheMedia and did very beautifully presenting his expertise and making eye contact with the media. The experience of that event has certainly made it possible for him to get media traction. Understanding the media cycle and what the media is looking for has helped with his delivery of content and execution of an interview.

Without any doubt a well put together Opinion Editorial piece in the paper is going to have more impact than most media you could ever produce. An Op-ed as we like to call them are a think piece, that establishes authority, it builds character and strength in your brand and character. It what we read and don't just glaze over. It can inspire, educate, influence and change behaviour. The very best at it are held in high esteem. You just need to do a few things to make sure you are on that stage and in the running to getting your Op-Ed published. Media Engagement Manager Emily Morgan is one of the professional writers at Media Stable that helps a series of experts get their thoughts, views and opinions together the way the media will publish them. There is a little bit of formula, timing, relevance, original thought- and straight-out opinion when it comes to writing these powerful pieces of content. Nic jokes that there are more of Emily's words in his pieces than his own, but Emily knows how to craft the piece of writing from good to GOLD. This podcast is full of useful tips to make that piece that you have in you get potentially published. One of the obvious tips is to make sure that you have support and a second eye to go over your work. To ‘kill the darlings' and to also keep you on track with a piece of content worthy of an Op-Ed. This is most certainly one of the toughest media achievements that any personal and business brand can achieve but it is so possible when it is done right. You will enjoy this chat with this writing expert and what you might be able to do yourself when it comes to writing. There is always risk expressing your opinion in a public way, but I think it is even riskier when you don't. People are inspired and follow your leadership and beliefs. They are looking for something to connect with you and this is one of the best platforms to do it. Get your writing hat on or grab that bottle of red as Nic might say.

The change of the seasons from Winter to Spring will bring a smile to many as we fast approach Summer but there is another change going on that excites business owners, experts and leaders of industry. The change in the media cycle where AFL and NRL enters finals, and we start to see a close of winter sport. Add the departures of maybe two of the most influential media personnel in 24 hours of Melbourne's ABC Radio Virginia Trioli and 3AW's Neil Mitchell. Nic and Carmen love getting together to riff media, communications, storytelling, presenting and broadcasting. The intention for this edition of the Experts Podcast is to fire up business owners and experts to get out there and own their space at this time in the media cycle. The unexpected resignations and announcements from both Virginia and Neil are just a little too much to handle. This episode can be described as a pep talk, a coach's fire up, a wake-up call. Whatever you want to call it, but the truth is here. The media cycle is shifting towards a new position that works in the favour of the content producer and expert, but it still needs to be delivered well. The media is looking for more, but it won't just accept anything, and neither should it. The enthusiasm and energy that you will feel from the chat on this podcast is what is needed to engage the media at this time. It is your time to start making an impact on media when there is an opportunity, and the time is now. The best advice is to get to a #MeetTheMedia in October, reach out to a PR or Media Stable to start producing content that works for the audience of the media.

There are very few experts that can read a room and make every media engagement their own like our next guest on the Experts Podcast. The ability to be flexible, to be in the moment and to think on your feet is critical for experts from all fields when being asked to contribute to the media. We have a real SHOWWOMAN in the studios today and I don't mean the theatre or circus type I mean someone that has the ability to capture the moment and deliver to an audience. Vivienne Anthon is a Management Consultant, a Facilitator and Gift Wrapping Expert. Yes.. we said Gift Wrapping Expert and this woman owns her space and more. You might remember Viv not long ago being a regular on Channel 10 Studio 10 morning show. Her antics with Denise ‘Ding Dong' Drysdale were hilarious which even resulted in her being a presenter over the summer period. Viv read the room, respected her role, opened herself up and delivered her true and authentic self. There is such great advice from this consummate professional for all up and coming experts working with the media. The one that resonated home was that it doesn't matter how you got there take advantage of the moment and own it. Viv isn't precious about ego or anything like that and knows that not everyone is going to gel with her and that's OK. Viv's ability though to touch and reach an audience through the media is a talent that we can all learn from. Even her ability to touch Nic when referring to their first chat before coming onto the Media Stable platform touched both presenters as she recalled the need for joy in the media. News and media can be terribly negative, but it doesn't have to be always. There is no chance that you can be feeling blue after catching up with Viv. This is a must listen for those who need a little extra encouragement to be themselves, enjoy their media engagements and own the moment.

While the whole world has been going crazy for ChatGPT over the last few months it is really challenging almost all sectors of business, industry, government and social aspects of our day-to-day life. Artificial Intelligence or AI as it is known has been around for a while but never has it been so accessible to everyone and a price that is just right. FREE! Nic and Carmen have a closer look at the feasible aspects of the software in the communications space and identify the challenges of using it and ignoring it. Of course we know about the threat it is to the education industry with its ability to write essays but what does it mean to everyday businesses that are trying to standout in this already mountain of content? Media Stable has made a very clear decision to not use AI in any of its content to media and both Carmen and Nic discuss its shortcomings and its major one lacking human connection. The website will get smarter and that's why they are letting us all access it for free so that it can learn from people and improve. It has many deficiencies as detailed in the podcast but it does have some positives that could help time poor or those lacking inspiration. All of the major search engines are integrating this into their platforms. It is going to be here whether you ignore it or not. The message is simply this everything you put out there reflects you and your brand. Just because it is easy does not mean that it is good. The quality and authentic content created by a human will always shine over the content that has been constructed by a machine.

The Experts Podcast was on tour with the #MeetTheMedia program through Melbourne and Sydney and what a delight it was to see events on again in these cities. It had been two years since were in the big cities and boy it did not disappoint. Instead of Carmen and Nic talking about their findings from the event we decided to go to an attendee that went to both events and as a result, she scored a Today Show interview within a week. Quite remarkable really. Nicole Jameson is the founder of the Darkhorse Agency and a social media expert. She attended #MeetTheMedia to expand her opportunities within media for her own personal and business purposes. Those that attend this special event are subject to so many experiences and opportunities and this was a chance to hear from Nicole on how it all played out for her. Getting a firsthand account from an attendee makes for compelling listening as you get to understand the expectations, the challenges, the fear and the adulation of engaging and meeting the media. Nicole is a confident businessperson and a leader of her industry but pitching to media and in front of your fellow attendees can be nerve-wracking. It is that human reaction that can work in your favour because the media is looking for human stories. This is the podcast to listen to if you did not get a chance to attend #MeetTheMedia. It is a great insight into an attendee that shared her expertise, her story, her position and as a result ended up on a national breakfast show. That connection, that meeting, that human engagement is something that will position you very well with media. Make sure that you are on the Media Stable newsletter for the coming events in 2023.

Well, this guest on the Experts Podcast is going to resonate with you if you are particularly good at what you do and not so good at telling people the how, why, and what you do. The marketing business is six years old but only has had a website for the last eighteen months. It is the classic case of the Michelin star chef going home and having cheese on toast for dinner. The other fascinating element of this podcast is that it is a digital agency that looks after junior miners. Not the easiest of industries to get media for. Amalie Schreurs is the Managing Director and Founder of investor relations firm White Noise Media and she completely floored Nic when the news of her website is only a recent addition to the business. It is something that a lot of businesses do, they serve their clients to the best of their abilities and sometimes forget to follow their own advice. A little different to the Media Stable practice what you preach approach. It has worked for White Noise, and they have built a very impressive portfolio of clients through referrals and successful campaigns. It is not the normal approach but daring to be different can certainly pay off if you are enthusiastic and disciplined. The team get down to what it takes be a successful communicator and promoter of a business and relationship is always prominent in every discussion. Both client and supplier need to be values based aligned and on the same page. Both Carmen and Nic get so much from talking to communications agencies as each have their assorted styles, expertise, methods, and tips. Amalie has a real staff first approach to her work in that she enables them to get the best from them. Clients and audience connection is at the heart of every piece of content produced and relationship made, and it is a great message for all businesses to do the same.

Hiring staff, paying yourself, outside help, working in unusual times have all been challenges that all businesses have faced over their time. There is very much a family and friendship theme for both businesses that have reached their milestone and it is this theme that is responsible for their success. It is critical for the joy, the outcomes, and results for their clients. There is fun and laughs right through the podcast and you can sense that both businesses are all about that. It doesn't feel like work at all.

Divorce and marriage breakups are a reality today that does not seem to be as big a deal as it once might have been but that is different if you are going through it. There is still stigma that comes with divorce and our guest today walks through the very elements of a relationship break up in her book Welcome to D-Town. A remarkably close and personal book that traverses through life after a divorce and guide to walk through the various stages of life after marriage. Beverly Ligman is an author, storyteller, journalist, and a media engagement manager at Media Stable. Most journalists will put down the writing of a book as goal, but Bev did not from the outset see this as her first book. No one goes into a marriage expecting it to break up, but the odds are not great. The book was cathartic for the author who wrote it to help others that might benefit from her experiences. The team explores the disciplines of drafting a book. It is something that many experts aspire to do, and Bev speaks of her experience writing, publishing, promoting the book. It is a lot of demanding work, and you need to go into it with the right mindset. The experience and the result certainly open doors and new opportunities that we do not normally get. There are fantastic storytelling tips in this podcast from the content creator Bev who shares her own experiences as a lifestyle journalist and driver of stories for members of Media Stable. The collection of experiences across different jobs and media houses has made Bev a better storyteller. We are the result of our experiences and while Bev's first book would not have been what she was dreaming about as a young journalist you can be sure there will be more books coming from this author.

Our guest today knows full well that his expertise is not as easy as picking up a phone book or googling the number of a ‘fighter pilot' here in Australia. You would think that all we might be talking about is the change of government or the horrors of the war in Ukraine. No, it is the premiere of Top Gun 2 and in between appearances on Seven's Sunrise and Nine's Today show our guest had a chat with Nic and Carmen. Christian ‘Boo” Boucousis is a former fighter pilot, a current author, speaker, human behaviour, and leadership expert and coach. He might be adding Australia's greatest “newsjacker” to his title as never have we seen such a demand on his time for an appearance this week on radio, television, and print. To do the two breakfast TV programs you are either a sporting icon like Ronaldo or a superstar musician like Paul McCartney. The aviation industry is a fascinating one and the ‘fighter pilot' is the pinnacle of that industry in the training and the lifestyle that comes with it. The training and the mindset of a pilot can be transferred to leaders of industry and that is what Boo has been doing with his business Afterburner. A fantastic program that is helping businesses make better decisions that might be under pressure or difficult circumstances. Not only is Boo a fascinating fella with an incredible experience to share and educate others on but he is also a top bloke. He understands the importance of mainstream media telling his story and will go out of his way to tell it Well. His interviews and media engagements on Seven and Nine are two of the best of the year by far that Media Stable have put forward and we are all desperate to see the film. “Carms it's time we busted the tower.”

While in media we can see so much is changing but there is so much that hasn't. There are elements of communication that will remain the same forever and the very basics are never lost. Sure, the platforms are changing, the audiences have greater choice, and we are experiencing very unusual times. This week we talk to a veteran of media, a producer across radio and television. He has also dabbled in the corporate communications world which really gives this expert a well-rounded approach to communications. Phil Sylvester is the General Manager of Media Stable based in Sydney and his pedigree of media is quite phenomenal. Having worked with some of Australia's most influential presenters and programs he now controls the east coast region of Media Stable supported by a very capable team of journalists and engagement managers. Phil is a student of ‘earned media' and ‘content marketing' in fact Phil was doing it long before a term was coined for it. There is a reason why corporates and big business like to employ media people and journalists. They get communication. From the start of the podcast Phil is filling us with content gold and you can hear the messages come out from this great storyteller. His experience and high energy and love for media is rare these days particularly from the behind-the-scenes space of an agency like Media Stable. Not short of an opinion or a position he certainly has made an incredible mark on the experts that frequent the services of Media Stable. They have benefitted with greater engagement, better pitches, and storytelling. Even crafty communicators and teachers of media Carmen Braidwood and Nic Hayes felt like they got a good old-fashioned communications lesson from Phil. Experience and relationships are everything in media and we get to hear from a master in this podcast. While the trends will continue to change the fundamentals of communication don't. We must be better in this space and be careful that you don't get caught up in the glitz and glamour of those pretending that they know media and communications.

Our guest on The Experts is an academic and a successful media commentator. He understood early that it wasn't good enough to just write for journals and keep the opinion and position on matters strictly to the lecture theatre. It is critical for any expert that they make sure that they are known, are prepared to comment and be available. Three critical characteristics of a successful expert. The very first television appearance for this United States politics expert was with Derryn Hinch on his Sky News show. He nailed it! Associate Professor Aiden Warren from RMIT got his start in media not because of the media team at RMIT. In fact, they had to contact him after he appeared on Melbourne talkback radio station 3AW. The media engagement was setup by his friend at Media Stable and they have been putting him forward to media ever since. Aiden walks through his experiences of engaging media and has many useful tips to help first timers to work with mainstream media. The chat quickly turns to reluctance from academic experts to be more media savvy and get themselves known despite the obvious benefits that come with building your personal brand. Nic recalls a podcast chat with Dr Kathryn Shine of Curtin University and the steppingstone for female academics to put their hand up to represent their field of excellence or expertise. This is one big pep talk for more academics to be more accountable in mainstream media and start sharing their thoughts and opinions in media. There is so much more academics and great theory driven educators can be doing in mainstream media. Following the advice and example of Aiden would be a good start for many in the education sector and don't rely on the University media team. In the most they are ineffective, out-of-date and have very few valid media connections. It's your personal brand so you want to be responsible for it.

A chance for Carmen Braidwood and Nic Hayes to properly catch up and have a chat about each other. A deep dive into what each brings to the table when it comes to working with the media. What they bring to the communications cycle and how to prepare, pitch and engage media. Some might say this is a little ‘self-indulgent' but after listening to the two of them you get to understand a little better where they sit in the media cycle. Carmen is a media professional and without doubt the podcast has picked up to new levels of quality and value for the listener. Her business “Confidence on Camera” is critical in a world where so much content is presented online and in video format. The ability to produce, present, and amplify your messages and opinions through the lens has become so critical for small and medium sized businesses. Nic has worked in media 25 plus years now and predominately behind the scenes in the media intelligence sector, PR, journalism and now running Media Stable a platform where experts and media connect through quality content. A tool that media and businesses have been using over the last decade and getting great results for their personal and business brand. The chance for Carms and Nic to riff without notice is what they will both say is the most fun. You listen to them each week interviewing a fascinating expert or media but what is it that each of them does? What do they enjoy? Where did it all start? It's a good little insight into the two presenters of The Experts from where they have been, where they are and where they are going.

There are a lot of experts featured in the media, but few are engaged like our guest this week on the Experts Podcast. The topic of ‘Grey Area Drinking' is a one that we haven't heard until recently. The growth and uptake of alcohol-free spirits, wine and beer across the globe has been enormous because of consumer demand. The reality around the health issues that alcohol has on our health and wellbeing is currently being amplified widely. Not to mention the hidden issues of it's personal effect on mental health, relationships, work, family, and life. It is a hot topic in the media. Sarah Rusbatch is a speaker, trainer, business owner of Free Sprit Company and a Grey Area drinking coach and expert. She has done a number of big ticket media appearances on radio, television, print and online media since joining Media Stable in 2021. Sarah has a very personal story to share, and it resonates well with audiences. The depth that Sarah can share her story varies depending on the media and the time allocated for the interview/segment. The longer form (e.g. podcasting) in Sarah's case suits better for her messaging because it takes time for the listener, reader, or viewer to reflect and connect with the messages, however in a very short time Sarah has learnt how to adapt it to suit shorter segments on television and FM radio. In this podcast Carmen and Nic get a bit caught up in the topic and find themselves reflecting on their own experiences with alcohol. Sarah is certainly not anti-alcohol or demanding of everyone to become a tee-totaller - her message is simple, you need to assess your relationship with alcohol as it might be contributing to the cause behind issues in your life. Sarah's style of storytelling is comforting and assuring, and paired with her English accent it is always engaging. Many people struggle with alcohol. Sarah let's us know that we're not outcasts, we're not alone and most importantly there are solutions. Not all experts are able to give such a personal account of their expertise the way Sarah tells her story. Real life experience is certainly an advantage when you are communicating. The topic of alcohol resonates widely because it is so culturally ingrained in everything we do, but also because we are also now particularly focussed on our health and wellbeing. You will certainly be hearing more from Sarah in the future.

The Experts Podcast gets some interesting correspondence but this one just about takes the cake for the being the best yet. It is an amazing unsolicited email pitch to appear on the podcast using the very information and education that she got from the podcast. It is pure magic and works on so many levels as a pitch that we wanted to get Dr Josephine Muir on the podcast to discuss it and find out a little about her product. The only way to explain how good this pitch was to receive is to publish it: Dear Nic, My name is Josephine Muir, CEO and co-founder of a Perth-based start-up called Noisy Guts. I listen to your podcast. As I listen, I often take note of a key take-away lesson or action item that I can implement to scale my small business. I am wondering whether it would be useful to your subscribers if I were to volunteer as a guest on your podcast to demonstrate how I've implemented lessons from your podcast's guests. I can use practical examples of how I've taken tips from your podcast and implemented them in my business. For example, here are 5 nuggets of gold that I've executed upon: 1. From Jessie Weatherley – give it time, don't give up too quickly; and don't expect an immediate ROI 2. From Jessie Weatherley – the work doesn't end with the media appearance; maximise & leverage your media by re-packaging the content 10 different ways. 3. From Lanna Hill – people trust people, not brands 4. From Nadia Mitsopoulos – find stories that connect with people. 5. From Saskia Loosjes - pitch stories that are interesting to the media's audience, not to you. And I can explain how we implemented the nugget, what challenges we faced in doing so & what we learned in the process. For example, in the week leading up to the AFL Grand Final, I pitched a story to the media about footy food. This was based on some fantastic stats about the number of meat pies and buckets of chips consumed in the last grand final at the MCG and how Perth was likely to stack up in comparison. I then did an analysis of the gluten-free, vego, vegan and hallal options for people with specific dietary requirements. The result was a 15 min radio interview. We then re-packaged the info for social media which was drip fed throughout the week. This resulted in high website traffic, etc. Let me know if you think this would be of interest to your audience. Kind regards, Josephine It might be considered a little overboard, it could be seen as an ego stroking exercise for the hosts of the podcast. It could even come across as a little eager. It might do all of that, but it had the desired effect that Josephine was looking for and then more. This genuine reach out was well thought-out, diligently researched, and professionally executed. All the lessons that Josephine learned from The Experts Podcast, and this is a direct result of that. To get this kind of feedback from the podcast is exactly why we at Media Stable and Expert Registry do this. Helping and educating those to be better communicators with media is the goal here for businesses big and small.

When you want to know the future of traditional media you can go to those that have always consumed it or you can go to those that are looking to be a part of it. You go to the student journalism students that are looking to make a career of it. What makes them tick? Why do they do they want to be a journalist? What draws young people to journalism and media? This week on #TheExpertsPodcast we discussed journalism with student Adam Di Tullio. He is deep into his Postgraduate and spent some time with Media Stable to understand the behind the scenes of a communications company. We were very impressed with Adam's appetite and desire to get a full understanding of the media cycle. The very honest and really engaging chat with this intelligent young man and his journey in a very demanding course is such an eyeopener into a future journalist and producer. There is so many little tips for those that are looking to engage media by finding out what a students life looks like. The WAAPA course at Edith Cowan University is action-packed, full on and it is the most successful media course in the country with 100% employment rate for the students. There are not many University courses that can claim that. The media today is vibrant, electric, fast-moving and journalists are doing a great deal more than they used to do a decade ago. Listening to Adam you can hear the energy, the enthusiasm and a sparkle that exists that comes from youth but also from an appetite to tell stories. At Media Stable we have always supported the students of today as they will be the journalists of tomorrow. As experts we should have the same attitude as you never know the student you are engaging might be the executive producer that calls you up again from a high rating breakfast radio show very soon.

Making a connection and forming a relationship has been challenged lately and it is not just the pandemic that is causing this. Technology has been advancing us in so many areas of our lives and has set us back in forming relationships. Now this doesn't sit well with just personal relationships in the dating scene, but it also it affects our relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. It is a minefield out there and you might need to think a little deeper about how you approach a new relationship. Conscious Connection is a revolution around relationships.  Karina Chapman is a champion of conscious connection and trying to help people make a deeper connection and understanding of what you really want. Karina is an author, speaker and trainer in the space of relationships and there is something for everyone in her approach and message. You would be mistaken if you pigeonhole this lady just in the field of love … Conscious Connection covers all relationships. The amount of media Karina has done in a very short period is impressive and the team makes a point that the topic of relationships is highly sort out by media. We are fascinated with human behaviour and why we do the things we do. Particularly when it comes to human interaction and engagement. It is something that is so general but we all experience it. This is a message to all experts that you need to find topics that are general and connect with the majority for your message to be appealing to media. We talk a lot about getting your ‘ducks in row' when it comes to media at Media Stable and Expert Registry. Karina Chapman has most certainly got them lining up beautifully. As an author her books are coming together, as a speaker and a trainer her messages are starting to come out in media and there is a call to action to take people to a destination to purchase. The most impressive is that Karina continues to be a student of media and her appetite to be the best she can be is voracious. This is the attitude that all speakers, authors, and experts need to be successful.

The experts and media come together on #TheExpertsPodcast but there is a missing piece we talk about but rarely hear from. In this episode we hear from two representatives of the Media Engagement team at Media Stable, John Solvander and Emily Morgan. They are the bridge between experts and media. They provide the advice and support each expert needs to tell their story in the way the media and their audience wants to hear it. The media crave the trust, relationships and understanding on how to pitch a story that our Media Engagement team provide.  They want good streams of quality stories and experts. While many experts and spokespersons won't have access to a media engagement team, after listening to this podcast they might want to rethink that approach. Having someone that can go over your work with fresh eyes and an unbiased approach can make the all difference between your story making it or not. What are the challenges that experts have in a modern media cycle? What can you do to improve your chances of making it in the media? How important is it to have an editor and advisor when it comes to engaging media? What tips do you have to get your story told? These are some of the questions answered in this edition of The Experts Podcast.

Male v Female experts. When you are an expert in your space your gender should not be an issue when communicating with the media, but there is quite the discrepancy when it comes to male and female representation. There is an abundance of men, but women are few and far between and the research by our guest on this episode of the Experts Podcast is looking to address this issue and how we might turn that around. Dr Kathryn Shine is the Journalism Postgraduate Course Coordinator at Curtin University.   Her research is across 30 female academics detailing their experiences and challenges of working with the media. The findings were very consistent with those that Media Stable have documented for both men and women. Some of the big hurdles for women working in media include fear of the media, fear of other colleagues, time restrictions, less inclined to put hand up and a gender bias media. The ultimate challenge though appears to be a lack of relationship with the media. A big portion of this podcast talks about the challenges that women face when dealing with media, mainly confidence. Understanding the media cycle would be highly beneficial for those that have overwhelmingly said they are prepared to do media but cannot get breakthrough or recognition for their expertise. On the other side we look at media and what they can be doing to encourage new sources and what it can add to their audience. There is a high portion of female audience that are disengaged with the news cycle because it does not represent a female view. Here is an opportunity to grow real audience numbers. Media Stable was able to give some interesting statistics on male and female representation on our Media Board and the dominance that female experts are having over men. Dr Kathryn was surprised but also noted when supported with media training and other support it does make a difference to achieve this. There is no doubt that both the media and the experts need to address the numbers.

Jill of all trades! Sometimes the expertise and the industry you are working in is not the most newsworthy or immediately angle attractive to media, but there's a way to tackle this. Very similar to our expert in focus this week from a company called Chematek. What do they do? Well, they are involved in high quality oils and lubricants. What does our expert in focus do? Well, lots of things really and that is what makes her a wonderful representative of her brand. Claire Rushe is the General Manager in Australia for Chematek, who are the authorized distributors of high quality of Italian produced Eni lubricants. Claire is an attractive and interesting spokesperson for a relatively new company to Australia. Claire has a history of working at the highest levels in finance and trading, an engineer and is a member of Mensa which does not surprise when you understand how this highly talented person works. The discussion around bitcoin and blockchain technology is very interesting. Claire is able to explain this in such simple terms, where many continue to fail. One of the great takeaways that we took from the podcast was that affirmation that the human representing the organisation is more interesting than the brand. This has been a big driver behind businesses like Expert Registry (media training platform) and Media Stable. The occasions where in an interview you might get to talk about the brand when your message is on point is the bonus.

It is highly unusual for Nic to get political and emotional in a podcast that is designed to talk about success in media, but it happened on this occasion. The special guests on The Experts Podcast this week are Lorna Cook and Julie Adams the founders of Chemo@Home and as the name suggests, they provide a service which allows patients to undergo their chemotherapy in the comfort of their home, administered by specialist nurses. A topic very close to Nic's heart as he lost both of his parents to cancer. The focus of this podcast are Lorna and Julie and their journey including telling their story.  It is such an important message to broadcast because the in-home chemo service they provide has an even bigger reason to be promoted within the current political, economic, and pandemic climate. The bureaucracy, stakeholders, state governments, and those in the health system have up until now done everything in their power to stop, rather than to provide and care for the very people they are responsible for. This topic is very popular in the media as it provides all the elements they are looking for in a story. It's personal and human.  There is emotion, tragedy, resilience, fight, joy and hope. Chemo@Home has done some terrific media over the years, but their messages need to remain constant for the purposes of educating both patients and the government. Lorna and Julie have adapted to doing many radio interviews while driving in the car to walking out of events to do a piece to camera for the nightly news on television. They feel so very privileged to be there with people when they are at their most vulnerable. It is nice to receive but it is even better to give. There really is a lot to learn from these two ladies when it comes to working with media. They are ready, willing, and motivated to make sure that they take advantage of every opportunity that presents. As a team, Lorna and Julie are two very different people and that has been one of the reasons for their success. They are genuinely the most caring and delightful ladies with a very important message that we at Media Stable are fortunate to be a part of.

Content is QUEEN This is such a fun and informative chat and look behind the scenes that is talk radio and media from a decision make that has a finger on the pulse. It delivers so much more to the listener than that though. The responsibility to inform, to get the right story, to be able to deal with the stories of the day and keep her audience informed is the goal of this person. This Content Manager really delivers and understands what is going on from both a media and audience perspective. Emily White is the Content Manager of Radio 6PR part of the Nine Network and you will hear the energy, the ideas, the very focus that she has for one of the biggest transformations that has happened in her media market in over a decade. The move to the Nine family and a massive transformation to the line-up of the Perth radio landscape has been very much the responsibility of this media professional. “The thing I love about my job is that we all look out for each other, we are a big family.” A reminder of how important radio as a media has been in a pandemic year. The mention of 3AW in Melbourne during this pandemic has seen incredibly high numbers of audience attracted to it when the state is in crisis. Trust and dependence on the right information is critical. Getting the behind the scenes look at not just production of the radio station but the very mechanics of bringing it altogether is a real eyeopener. We even get Emily to tell us who her favourite personality within the office. This is a great way to finish off the year with someone who is across all aspects of the power that is radio. A medium that many of our members of Media Stable enjoy and get to be a part of. The idea that media is cold, ruthless, and uncaring is very quickly dismissed when you get to hear the very human and real voice of those behind it. Emily White is just another great example of the human side of media. Understand what drives, inspires, and motivates the people in media makes for you the storyteller a better communicator with the very platforms you are looking to engage.

If you aspire to demonstrate your authority and expertise there is a golden rule that Kate reminds us of;  Take some time to consume the very media you are looking to be a part of.  Tune in early, understand the presenters and get a feel for what they like and dislike. Do this, and your appearance makes for a better interview and a better result for the expert. It's no secret that Nic and Kate know each other well and it is this type of relationship that Media Stable has formed with many key media people.  Building relationships and connections is critical as we all tend work with better with those we know and trust.

This week I welcomed back Nick Hayes, Managing Director of Media Stable, to discuss his observations across the media landscape and media consumption over the last six to nine months during this changeable period.Nick explains is that, as he predicted in the last podcast, that there's been a real move back to traditional forms of media, in particular radio.  We really had a great discussion about becoming more discerning in our media consumption and sense making, particularly recognising the leanings, particularly the political orientation, of the sources that you're listening to. We also talked about the pitfalls of going to social media as a source of news and also the concept of consuming too much information.Nick is really articulate and has a great sense of humour. He brings a very grounded and grown up perspective to the topic of news and media in general.

The Experts powered by Media Stable

We take a slightly different direction with the podcast this week by not interviewing an expert or a media professional but instead possibly Australia's leading media expert in John Solvander. New Zealand will likely try to claim him like they try to claim pavlova, Russell Crowe and Split Enz but that accent still squirreled away is a dead giveaway. John Solvander is the Director of Media Engagement, an owner of Media Stable and what Nic Hayes refers to as the engine behind the success of the business. In fact his exact words to many of the experts as they are onboarding with Media Stable “If Media Stable was an orchestra then John would be the conductor”. We kind of had to just throw this on John to do the podcast and not let him think about it too much. Many media that have worked with John will know its never about him. It's about the story and the audience.  He has worked in media for 25 years, and only about 90 minutes of that would've been 'on-air'.  He is a behind-the-scenes professional, offering support, guidance and mentoring to our experts.  He has crossed paths with a lot of media personnel along the journey. While it might seem a little self-indulgent from a Media Stable's perspective to put John Solvander up to chat on The Experts Podcast I can assure you the true value is yours. What this man doesn't know about media isn't worth knowing and his commitment to his craft is exemplary. John is one of the greatest assets of Media Stable we just thought it was worth your while to know a little about his back story. Enjoy!

The Experts powered by Media Stable

Erin is one of our favourite media people. Her personality just clicked with Media Stable's in-person annual event #MeetTheMedia and we have been in regular contact for years. Erin Bouda is the Supervising Producer for Channel 9's Weekend TODAY.  Erin knows her stuff when it comes to understanding the show, the hosts, the style and the type of stories they are interested in.  The key to understanding media is to take the time to understand the show and the audience you are pitching to. Weekend National TV is very different to the weekday hustle of Breakfast, Morning and Afternoon TV.  There is more time that can be applied to a story on the weekend.  The tips and advice Erin goes through is critical for any expert looking to influence or engage.  The gold nuggets were rolling out from our special guest this week and here is a short summary of it: "Know the show, know the host, know the audience.  Keep in mind segments are 3-4 minutes long - keep your pitch short.  Be available and say YES.  Why is the story right for now?  Newsjacking and put your hand up to say you have an expertise"  Both experienced and novice experts need to take on this advice. We are big fans of Erin and her work, as you will be able to tell when you listen to the podcast. However, you will also sense that the relationship is very mutual.  Early in the podcast Erin says 'the media needs the expert as much as the expert needs the media'.  This statement is so true and when you can develop a mutually beneficial relationship for both parties it is a win win.

The Experts powered by Media Stable

The once slightly nervous psychologist “Don't put me near a camera. I only want to do print.” was one of the first conversations that this expert expressed to the Media Stable team back six years ago. This self-confessed shy, nervous, and reserved professional did not want to have anything to do with TV. Now is one of the most recognised psychologists in Western Australia as a regular on Channel Nine News. Dr Marny Lishman is a Health and community Psychologist who has hammered home a media profile over radio, print, online and her original greatest fear TV. A psychologist is incredibly powerful for media as they have the content that fascinates an audience and there is no shortage of opportunities if you put your hand up. Marny certainly puts her hand up and delivers. What I think you will get from listening to Marny's story is that you will connect with her on many levels from her initial concerns, worries and also the hurdles in front of her to be successful in media. From doing interviews in a closet, dropping kids to play in the park while Mum does a radio interview to just taking on the mountain that was her first TV interview. Marny is very real, so authentic and such a natural communicator that she does not need to try hard to help you understand what is going on. The other key takeaway that you should look out for in this podcast is the organic nature that Marny has built her reputation. From social media post, to column writer, to radio to television. There is a calmness and a sense that quality content will find a home in media and not just lay idle on a blog. That investment in herself to get her content out wider is truly paying off.

Take a deep dive into the current world of media with Nic Hayes, Founder and Managing Director of Media Stable.Nic shares how he spotted an opportunity in the changing media landscape to create Media Stable, which actively links experts and their views with media outlets to produce informed and trusted content.Through this conversation Nic provides an insightful commentary of the full range of media platforms, from traditional forms of print, TV and Radio through to online and social media, as well as the changes in our consumer behaviour. Interestingly Nic explains how, through a growing erosion of trust in social media content, there is the potential for people to return to the more traditional forms of media once they gain more awareness of the often-questionable credibility and decide to become more discerning media consumers. We also spend time discussing the impact of content that is aimed at giving people what they WANT versus giving people what they NEED, as well as the importance of real human relationships and interaction.Nic is a wonderfully engaging as well as knowledgeable man, which makes this conversations both entertaining and thought provoking, and leaves the listener with the challenge to consider a more discerning consumption of media in day to day life.

Nic Hayes runs Media Stable, a company that connects thought leaders with traditional media outlets wanting experts to comment on topical issues. Given his company represents 450 professional experts, Nic is well placed to see both sides of the media exposure coin: (a) what does the media want in an expert commentator, and (b) what can experts do to make themselves a more appealing interview subject for journalists and broadcast media hosts. Add value In this wide-ranging chat with Trevor Young, Nic explains how journalists, editors and producers are constantly on the lookout for expert talent, thought leaders who can add value to the stories they're pulling together for their audience. He says understanding the media outlet you're pitching too is crucial, so too is having a strong news hook that will grab the journalist or producer straight away. Other tips from Nic: Make yourself available! Professional experts are very busy people but they still make the effort to take the media's calls at a moment's notice. Journalists are often on a tight deadline: if you can help them with their story in a timely fashion, that gets noticed!Deliver the best possible interview that you can - "that will get you asked back", says Nic.Provide great quotes and soundbites that will help bring the media's stories come to life. Importantly, there are opportunities at the lower end of the media scale that over time can help professional experts gain experience and confidence so when a more prestigious media outlet comes calling, the expert is ready to deliver a high standard of commentary.   Nic also provides examples of some of Media Stable experts who are generating valuable editorial exposure by providing the media exactly what they're after.
