With me today is the fabulous Shelly Horton. Shelly is a journalist, Channel 9 presenter, keynote speaker, emcee, the founder of ShellShocked Media and she is passionate about normalising conversations and education on the topic of perimenopause. You're in for a treat today as Shelly openly and humorously shares her journey with perimenopause and why she is an out-and-proud peri warrior. Shelly has been a long-time advocate for women's health, publicly speaking up to destigmatise topics such as a woman's choice to be childfree, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), dense breasts, depression and peri/menopause. She is an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Too Good, Pink Hope and HER Mental Health. Shelly is also a member of the International Menopause Society and has way too much going on to let perimenopause get in the way! With such a lack of education and discussion on the topic of perimenopause, Shelly had no idea what it was until it hit her. In this conversation, Shelly talks about her experience with depression and anxiety and how most of the symptoms of perimenopause can be passed off as something else. This leaves many women feeling isolated, confused, misdiagnosed and in a terrible state of health. Shelly shares her advice for women to talk about what they are experiencing and the importance of finding a GP who has expertise in perimenopause. We talk about the need to educate all genders about perimenopause, which Shelly is doing alongside Dr Ginni Mansberg through their incredible course, Don't Sweat It. Given that so many women are in vital positions of leadership, Shelly shares why it's crucial to implement perimenopause and menopause policies in the workplace. We talk about not just ticking the box, but actually educating and building awareness on what women really go through. Shelly is doing an incredible leading the conversation on this taboo topic, and I know you're going to really enjoy this episode. I hope it inspires to take action for own health and start building awareness in your community so that women's health is prioritised in the way it should be. What are the first signs of perimenopause? Unlike the much easier signal, years earlier, that you were having your first period, there's no specific sign or marker of this transition. And because the process starts many years before actual 'menopause' (which is, officially, 1 year after your last period) it usually happens in our early to mid 40s. For TV presenter Shelly Horton it was an enormous shock when her doctor suggested she was perimenopausal. “I'm like, hang on a minute, I'm 46! I'm hot! What the hell?! Menopause is for old ladies with grey hair, clutching their pearls. And they have hot flushes and then their periods stop. That's all that happens. Right? Like I had no idea!" It has led Shelly to become, a self-described 'peri warrior'. And together with GP Dr Ginni Mansberg she now offers webinars and workshops to support women through perimenopause, and also to teach businesses how to support their own staff. Find out more at Don't Sweat It. Plus, she's conducting a weekend-long retreat on Hamilton Island, from June 16-18 2023, for women to meet others and to learn and be inspired. When you hear the word menopause, you may think it's something that happens when you become an “old lady”. I didn't realise until it was way too late that menopause is just a date. It's perimenopause which can last up to 10 years before you go through menopause that has the wildest impact on us as women and it's something that rarely been talked about until now. As a typical listener of this podcast, statistically you may already be in perimenopause (or not too far off). There is no avoiding the impact it will have on your health, your relationships, your ability to run your business, your confidence. It's monumental. This month is Menopause Month, I thought it would be perfect timing to have a chat with proud Peri-warrior Shelly Horton on to have a chat. Shelly is a journalist, TV presenter, keynote speaker, MC, she runs her own business - ShellShocked Media. Shelly and I have a really open, honest discussion about the impact of perimenopause on her life and her ability to build her business, what prompted her to start sharing her experience and what has happened as a result of her sharing. We also talk about what action needs to be taken in our workplaces and Shelly and her bestie Dr Ginni Mansberg have created Don't Sweat It, an online program about managing and supporting perimenopause and menopause in the workplace. You can see from the episode duration that this is a long one but it is incredibly valuable as every woman will go through this. **Trigger warning: miscarriage, divorce, depression and suicidal thoughts. ** *Neither Shelly or Michelle are medical professionals. We're taking a detour from regular programming today to discuss a subject that is still considered taboo in many cultures. It used to be referred to as “change of life” when I was growing up and it certainly wasn't discussed in public. Now it's known as the M word. While we're happier to have an open conversation about perimenopause and menopause there's still very little information around that's digestible or helpful. The rabbit hole that is Dr Google can be misleading and symptoms can be mistaken for other health issues. As someone who is in the menopause years, I can attest to the feelings of loneliness and frustration as weight gain, hair loss, night sweats, constant tiredness and mood swings took hold.Today's guest Shelly Horton is a presenter on Channel Nine, writer for Nine Honey and one of Australia's favourite MCs. Shelly is also the founder of Shellshocked Media. She's outgoing, fun and full of energy. So it was a shock to fans when she began to share her journey with Peri, her symptoms, struggles and those raw behind the scenes moments that most of us would rather keep private. In this episode we're diving into the M word; the symptoms, treatments and unexpected rollercoaster that is perimenopause.Connect with Shelly Horton on Instagram or visit the ShellShocked Media website. For more information on Don't Sweat It click here. This episode is brought to you by Flossi Creative.Freaked out by your business finances? In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from journalist Shelly Horton. Shelly is the master of being heard and voicing her opinion on sticky situations – it’s what we all love the most about her. Shelly’s high school guidance counsellor said she talked to much and should dial it down. So, how do you take what someone said you shouldn’t do and translate that into a business skill? Shelly says, “I’m employed for my brain, not how I look and that has been a big switch that I want to instil in other women.” Dealing with internet trolls has become part of Shelly’s life, ‘unfortunately, we’ve lost that ability to have a debate and not attack the other person’. Her advice – ‘Don’t try and deal with it yourself.’ Shelly sees Dr Happy who encouraged her to list the ten people whose opinion matter to you and discount the rest. ‘It’s a psychological trick but it really does bring your power back.’ So many women feel they don’t have a voice, however, Shelly is not afraid to deep dive into a topic and voice an opinion and shares her top 3 tips for being heard as a leader or advocate for change – Firstly, ‘remember the 5 Ps – Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.’ Write down (in dot points) and rehearse the conversation in the mirror. Then prepare your body – focus on your breathing and warm up just like you would run a marathon. And finally, ‘Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable yourself - vulnerability opens up a chance to connect.’ Shelly says, ‘I believe everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to be herd – if you’re honest, vulnerable and show all your sides you are setting an attainable goal.” Shelly’s advice for women who want to be heard amongst the chatter on social media – ‘You need to work hard on your brand, be consistent, deep dive into your core values and take every opportunity to learn from others. Make sure to say no to things that don’t vibrate well with you and yes to what does align with your values. One of Shelly’s most powerful steps came from a lie. Her career as a television presenter started in London - ‘It was one of those things where I just jumped in and made it happen.’ When you’re not someone who has been handed opportunities and you’ve had to hustle for so long, to actually have that success and belief in yourself, it’s a game-changer.” So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Shelly Horton. It’s time to get loud and proud with journalist, TV presenter, and company founder Shelly Horton in this episode of FORTY. Shelly is a force to be reckoned with and - in the delightful and hilarious way that’s been the backbone of her media career for 20+ years - delivers her no-holds-barred, warts-and-all, laugh-out-loud recounts of the experiences that made her the woman she is today. From dismal dating tales after divorce to then marrying the love of her life at 40, from being told she was ‘too fat’ to be on-screen to owning her status as ‘the curvy redhead on the telly’, outlining the difference between being ‘childfree by choice’ and ‘childless’, and never being afraid to fake it till you make it. Shelly’s known (and paid!) for giving her opinions; so get that popcorn ready, sit back and relax while she takes you on a podcast trip worth hearing. What happens when you’re unapologetic about who you are and want to be? We find out in FORTY. Welcome To Another Episode of The Decoding Purpose Podcast. Now today's guest is a face and a voice whose ‘sparkle’ many of our local listeners would feel right at home with - and that guest is the incredible Shelly Horton. The reason she might be familiar to you is because she is a regular on Channel Nine’s Today Show, Today Extra, Weekend Today and the 3pm News; her lifestyle segments on 9Honey or hosting Talking Married on 9Now.For more than 25 years Shel has honed her craft as one of Australia’s most loved journalists both in news and entertainment, and today she is also a wild and free woman and entrepreneur. Shelly and her husband Darren co-founded Shell Shocked Media around five years ago. Like so many of us she has found freedom in the purpose and creativity found in running her own business. It's fair to say that of all of the guests I have interviewed for the Decoding Purpose Podcast that Shelly’s charisma and bubbly nature creates a feel good factor which I have no doubt is one of the reason she has pursued a purpose that has enabled her to influence and inspire audiences all over the world.Influence is certainly a subject we explored as one of the most significant ways we can shift our message into a movement or amplify our purpose. Along with unpacking shills in influence we also got raw, vulnerable and went purposefully deep. This included looking at the social expectations placed on women with a focus on her conscious decision to be child free, the importance of diverse and inclusive representation in the media including whether the media should be leading the way with regards to social expression. We unpacked incredible stories of resilience with a focus on the power of purpose in the bounce back, and finally we focussed on what it takes to act on the 2 minutes of courage that could change your life. With all of the above in mind, get ready today to land in the world of Shelly Horton. The Shelly Show is one of charisma and razzle dazzle on a foundation of deep introspection, integrity and emotional intelligence.
This episode’s guest has taught me a lot about putting in the work and showing up with confidence. For over twenty five years Shelly Horton has had an exciting and diverse career as a journalist and presenter across television, print, digital and radio. As someone who grew up in a small country town called Kingaroy in Queensland, Shelly’s story is not only a great example of how to get your dream job but also how to keep fighting for what you want when others might be trying to bring you down. From fibbing her way onto the camera to read the sports news during a major bulletin in London to reporting and presenting for several major networks in Australia, Shelly has never been afraid to forge her own path. She is currently a regular commentator on Channel’s 9’s Today and Today Extra, hosts 9Honey’s Talking Honey, He Said/She Said, and Talking Married, and is also a sought after speaker and MC. In 2016, Shelly and her husband Darren took the leap and launched their own business, ShellShocked Media – a full service video production agency drawing on Shelly’s media prowess and Darren’s experience behind the camera. Shelly is also an expert at helping people find their ‘inner Beyoncé’ through her media and presentation training and she is my go-to clients who need to hone their presentation skills. We caught up at her home slash office slash training studio to talk about how the media’s attitude to looks has evolved since she was told she was ‘too fat for TV’, to what to do when you just can’t help but read the comments. Shelly Horton’s High School career guidance counsellor told her she was too opinionated and warned her to tone it down. Instead, she ignored him and turned it into a career! Shelly is a journalist, TV presenter and producer and her opinions can be heard multiple times each week on Channel 9 in Australia. Shelly is also not afraid of open and honest conversations about difficult topics. So I knew she’d be the perfect guest for Sparta Chicks Radio. In this conversation, Shelly and I discuss: - the early days of her career (which started in radio) including the very personal reason she didn’t explore a career in TV, - the “soul-destroying” conversation with her boss about her weight that destroyed Shelly’s confidence and derailed her TV career for almost 2 years, - the goal-setting course (and the exercise she learnt at that course) that fundamentally changed her life, - the biggest myths around confidence, - her experience with the Imposter Complex, - how she deals with online trolling and public criticism, and - her experience with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and how she manages it Get the full show notes for the episode here. — Visit the Sparta Chicks Radio website here Follow Sparta Chicks Radio on Facebook: facebook.com/SpartaChicks Follow Shelly on Instagram: instagram.com/shellyhorton1
