Imagine having your world turned completely upside down in your early twenties – from travelling and building a thriving career to suddenly facing life-threatening medical complications. In this robust conversation, I speak with the extraordinary Lisa Cox, whose journey from stroke survivor to internationally awarded disability advocate will challenge how you think about disability, resilience, and representation.Lisa shares the raw truth about navigating life after acquiring multiple disabilities at age 24, including partial blindness, amputations, and a permanent brain injury. Yet her story isn't one of defeat – it's a testament to redefining purpose and challenging societal perceptions. With humour, wisdom and unflinching honesty, Lisa reveals how her disability became her unexpected superpower and why representation matters for the 20% of our population living with disabilities.Key TakeawaysDisability is everybody's issueWith approximately 20% of the population having disabilities and the UN stating we'll all experience disability at some point in our lives, making things more inclusive benefits everyone, not just those currently living with disabilities.Identity beyond disabilityLisa powerfully shares how her most significant challenges weren't about appearance, but about the loss of ability. She emphasises that people with disabilities have diverse interests and shouldn't be reduced to their medical conditions – "We're not a monolith."Representation drives social changeFrom marketing campaigns to political leadership, disability visibility in media and public life directly impacts education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Small wins like wheelchair Barbie might seem insignificant, but they create ripple effects for systemic change.Allyship starts with small actionsYou don't need to rewrite government policy to make a difference. Sharing social posts, helping someone get workplace accommodations, or simply treating disability as normal can create meaningful change. The disability community needs allies outside their "bubble."Moving ForwardLisa's journey reminds us that while challenging societal perceptions takes time, each small step matters. Whether you're navigating your own health transitions, supporting someone with a disability, or simply wanting to be a better ally, remember that authentic representation and inclusion create a world that benefits everyone. As Lisa wisely notes about preparation for aging: "I go to the gym a few times a week because I know that my 80-year-old version of me is going to have extra mobility challenges. So I'm planning for that now." What a powerful reminder that midlife is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for our future selves.Visit www.lisacox.co for her social links and to read more.Lisa is a proud advocate for the charity Youngcare: www.youngcare.com.au Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisacox.co/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisacox-authorspeakerconsultant/Remember to subscribe to the Redefining Midlife podcast and leave a review if you enjoyed this episode! Two simple words, "what if" hold remarkable power over our lives, especially in midlife. In this heart to heart solo episode, we explore how transforming negative "what ifs" into questions of possibility can open doors you never imagined. Learn how to flip the script on fear-based thinking and embrace the freedom waiting on the other side of "what if I tried?"Key TakeawaysRecognise Your Fear-Based "What Ifs"Those 3 AM thoughts that keep you awake—"What if I fail? What if people judge me?"—aren't signs you're not ready. They're simply your brain's protective mechanism trying to keep you safe in the familiar. Acknowledging this is the first step toward change.Flip the Script on Negative ThinkingInstead of "What if I fail?" ask "What if it works out?" Rather than "What if I'm too old?" consider "What if I'm right on time?" This simple shift transforms paralysis into possibility and opens your mind to new opportunities.Consider the Cost of Not ChangingPerhaps the most powerful question to ask yourself: "What if nothing changes?" Imagine five years from now, still wondering "If only I had tried..." This reality check often becomes the turning point for women ready to reclaim their lives.Start with One Small StepChange doesn't happen in one giant leap. Real transformation comes through consistent, supported, and intentional movement. What's one small action you could take today toward the life you truly want?Make "What If" a Daily PracticeBegin each morning with a possibility-focused "what if" question: What if I put myself first today? What if I reached out for support? What if I let myself dream again? Just one positive "what if" can shift your entire perspective.Your Midlife Journey Is Just BeginningYou don't need to have everything figured out right now. You simply need to be willing to ask better questions and trust where they lead. Remember that your negative thoughts aren't reality—they're just one possibility among many. Your "what if" isn't the end of your story; it's the beginning of a new chapter where you step into your power and take full responsibility for creating a life that feels expansive and aligned.Ready to turn your whispers of possibility into action? This morning, the village and wider area remained without power and water. Treasa received an update from Uisce Éireann as to when it hoped to restore water. Jerry also spoke to Lisa Cox, who lives in Brosna; she feels they are living in a forgotten village. After this interview, ESB Networks contacted the show to say that some homes in the area may not have power restored until Friday. Up to 40 fallen trees in Brosna, particularly in Mount Eagle, have caused the outage and have contributed to the length of time it's taking to restore electricity.

Lisa Cox joined me and she read her poem titled “Shattered” A love note for myself: Darling, After I have shattered, only I choose which pieces are worth saving. Then, I rise. Then, through the lens of our personal experiences, we discussed what it means to shatter and how it can be the catalyst to positive transformations in our lives. We discussed why we shatter; What shattering can look like; What happens after we shatter; What we can do with the shattered pieces of us and other “shatter” related issues, including how a kaleidoscope factors into the process. In Episode 2 of Season 2, Amber Bonney Bites Big with guest co-host Lisa Cox - one of Australia's leading authors, TEDx speakers and inclusive communications consultant & disability advocates.Inspired by Amber's own Mantra, "bite big and chew like hell", in this episode we talk about how Lisa's early career has influenced her efforts in championing inclusion for people with disabilities, particularly in media, since a brain haemorrhage triggered a series of events that left her with both visual and invisible disabilities herself.Amber and Lisa discuss how her two mantra's, "Worse things happen", and "Start with the small changes to create a tidal wave" have helped give her perspective on a daily basis, whilst the change we need won't happen overnight, the small changes combined by herself and others can create a huge ripple affect and the need to celebrate these small wins.Lisa shares insight on how she shifted from survival after her series of events left with overwhelming challenges and pivoted into an advocacy role using disadvantage for change, changing her own inner stereotypes of disability to helping change industry and the way disability was being represented. Listen to one of Australia's most inspirational marketing services professionals who has broken the mould of what our industry looks like, and has demonstrated through data-led evidence how embracing diversity makes good business sense.Bite Big has donated $500 to the chosen charity Youngcare a not-for-profit that is revolutionising the way young people with high care disability live to give them freedom, dignity and choice. If you would like to know more about our host Amber Bonney her business The Edison Agency or co-host Lisa Cox you can connect and follow these boss women via their socials links below!Links:Lisa's LinkedInLisa's InstagramLisa's WebsiteLisa's TedXTalkUnstereotype AllianceThe Valuable 500Diversity AustraliaThe Edison Agency's LinkedInThe Edison Agency's InstagramAmber's LinkedIn Amber's InstagramYoungcareCreditsMain Host: Amber BonneyProducer: Niki BeestonSound Engineer: Jack Gooden, Gasworks BrisbanePost Production : 17th Street Audio

Asbestos has been found in numerous public sites across Sydney after being discovered in mulch this month at the new Rozelle parklands development in Sydney. Now a Guardian Australia investigation reveals a potentially more dangerous type of contaminated soil may have been used in other developments across NSW, despite the environmental regulator knowing about the risks for more than a decade. Environmental reporter Lisa Cox tells Gabrielle Jackson why recycled contaminated building waste is being found in our soil

In Australia, nearly 20% of the population has a disability, but you wouldn't gather that from the way the media represents this diverse group. Take Lisa Cox, for instance. At the age of 24, she faced a sudden brain hemorrhage, leading to three weeks in a coma and two months on life support. Lisa battled pneumonia, heart attacks, and uncontrollable seizures as her organs shut down. At one point, her family was faced with the heartbreaking decision to potentially turn off her life support. Miraculously, her brain began to recharge, defying the odds. Throughout a year of hospitalization, Lisa underwent numerous surgeries, from open heart surgery to the amputation of a leg, toes, and nine fingertips, along with a hip replacement. Today, she lives with permanent brain damage, over 25% blindness, epilepsy, and deals with fatigue and osteoarthritis. But none of these challenges have halted Lisa's journey. With a solid background in marketing, Lisa has transformed into a passionate advocate for disability rights. Her mission? To significantly boost the representation of people with disabilities in mainstream media. Rock Solid Families - EP260 - Should I Home School My Kids?Lisa Cox - certified teacher that chose to bring her craft into her homeConsidering homeschooling your kids? In today's episode, we're unpacking the world of homeschooling, an educational path that's gaining traction among many Christian families. Lisa Cox, an experienced homeschooling parent, offers a firsthand look into the dynamics and decisions surrounding this approach to education. Key to the conversation is the unity of parental values, a foundation ensuring cohesion and mutual commitment to the child's education. While some children might champion the idea of homeschooling, it's essential for parents to discern their underlying motives. Is it truly in the child's best interest or merely a means to bypass challenges of traditional schooling? For parents contemplating this path, diving into homeschooling communities, conventions, and co-ops can be enlightening. This exploration helps in discerning the right homeschooling style that aligns with the family's core values.Transitioning into the role of a primary educator goes beyond curriculum choices. It demands dedication and a hands-on approach, ensuring lessons resonate with the child's unique needs. Many parents worry about the perception that homeschooled children don't have enough social opportunities. Lisa shares that contrary to popular belief, homeschooling offers a wealth of socialization avenues. From community engagements to co-op activities, children can foster friendships and social skills. Parents play a pivotal role in facilitating these opportunities.Lisa offers reassurance that with a faith-driven perspective and thorough preparation, homeschooling offers a transformative educational journey, nurturing children into the well-rounded Christian individuals that God intended them to be.Key Takeaways:Homeschooling requires a strong commitment and willingness to put in the hard work.It is important for both parents to be on the same page and make the decision together.Doing thorough research and talking to other homeschooling families can help in making an informed decision.Homeschooling allows for individualized education and flexibility in scheduling.Providing healthy opportunities for socialization is crucial for homeschooled children.Quotes:"I wanted my kids to have the opportunity to be who God intended them to be without all the expectations and peer pressure that gets put on them to be like everyone else." The Albanese government has committed $1.5bn to Darwin harbour's Middle Arm precinct – a project that has been sold as ‘sustainable' and a contributor to ‘decarbonisation'. But some environmental and Indigenous groups are concerned that Middle Arm, far from promoting sustainability, is simply a vast fossil fuel project that will lock Australia into gas production for 50 more years and endanger priceless Indigenous rock art.Environment reporter Lisa Cox on what the expansion of the gas industry in the Northern Territory could mean for Australia's emissions and traditional owners
I was so honored to speak at the Texas Education Foundation Network event. A very well-organized event and they made me feel like a real rock star! Believe it or not, my appearance there was actually a Ripple, one that started many years ago with a relationship that seems to have only gotten stronger over the years. Lisa Cox, knew me when I was knee-high to a grasshopper and still massively unsure of myself or my abilities. She saw something in me that I know I didn't even see in myself. Just telling this story made me think of another person who had an influential and profound impact on my life, my teacher, mentor, and friend, Jay Stephenson. In life, you are lucky if you get one person to believe in you more than most. I've been blessed with two. Two amazing friends who would never let me give up on myself. Even when I so desperately wanted to. _______________________________- To inquire about Steve's availability for conference keynotes, corporate training or performance coaching please contact info@ripplecentral.com Follow me: on http://www.ripplecentral.com on http://instagram.com/rippleon on https://www.facebook.com/rippleon on https://twitter.com/rippleon

Pyrographer Lisa Cox on finding her artistic voice and life as a woman in woodworking.
How do you think and act like an owner as a marketer? Lisa Cox at Teak & Twine shares her approach and how it informs everything from coming up with campaigns to running revenue reporting. Highlights include:* Balancing business growth and personal goals. Lisa shares how her past experience as a business owner taught her how important it is to focus on business growth. Now that she's in-house, she finds ways to also drive personal growth and take risks.* Their most successful paid ad. It's a meme. Seriously. And they haven't been able to top it. Lisa shares how they develop creative concepts. They went too far but pulled it back and are striking the right tone.* B2B doesn't have to be boring. Beyond any one ad, they engage with the human-side of their prospects which include HR teams and other marketers. While also supporting a smaller DTC segment of their ecommerce business.* Expanding their definition of success. Strictly speaking, Lisa is responsible for sales pipeline. But she has gone rogue to build her own reports and track revenue since she knows what's what really matters. * Experimenting with ABM. Not wanting to invest heavily in data or tech, they found a scrappy way to experiment with ABM (account-based marketing) and achieved some pretty incredible results. Like a 50% meeting rate! Had such an amazing time Rippling with a woman that played a very big part in my early days as an entrepreneur. Lisa Cox was a Junior Achievement Coordinator that saw potential in me that maybe I didn't see in myself. Whether she believes it or not, she actually played a role in helping form me into the Rippling machine I am today. Even if it took a strong Texas accent and some butt kicking boots to do it.

Happy Friday R&C gang! In today's episode, I chat with Lisa Cox, who is an author, presenter, and disability advocate who empowers other women to live an authentically fearless life. In our conversation, Lisa shares how her life changed when she had a brain haemorrhage at age 24. As a result, she lost one of her legs, her toes, her fingertips and some of her sight. Lisa tells us how she had to hit the restart button on so many areas of her life (from learning to brush her teeth to how to write again), and shares how she found her ‘fearless'. She also mentions the importance of starting out small, which is SO important as we often get caught up fixating on a big shiny goal at the finish line.I hope you love this chat as much as I do!
