Many of us grew up with people telling us not to be angry or not to be "ridiculous" - this idea that we can show some emotion, but we have to suppress others. Main: Dr Marny Lishman is a psychologist who joins me this episode to talk about adaptability, wellbeing and change. After the last couple of years, many of us have become more stressed, unhappy, and ultimately mentally unwell. And unfortunately, we have been grown up without being taught to properly process negative emotions, leaving us overwhelmed, and triggered at any moment. Join us in this episode to talk about mental health and how you can best navigate your emotions. Find out more here: https://www.mmmpodcast.me/ep163
It's that time of the year again, when we start thinking what our New Year's resolutions might look like. Sometimes reflecting on stopping a habit that makes us feel bad is a good way to start. For many, this would be social media. If it hasn't been beneficial to you this year, perhaps it's time to disable Facebook, Instagram, and any other social media apps you've been tuning in to. Bill Woods is joined by Dr Marny Lishman, Health & Community Psychologist, who says 'social media has been shown to cause distress for many people, so it's not surprising that we toy with the idea of giving it up.' 'There are many benefits to ditching it, including elevating your mood, increasing self-esteem, and giving you more time.' 'In these modern times, is it realistic that people disable their socials and stay off them?' See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In another stop and prop moment we look back at the last 14 episodes and the learnings that both Lanna and Nic captured from the experts and the media. This is the podcast to listen to get a feel for the takeaways and the highlights from each of those interviewed. This is personally such a fun look back at the work that has been done to see what stood out for each of the presenters. It's also a great chance to capture some of the key messages and if a podcast episode needs to be re-visited. The experts that we took the journey with this season included Michelle Maynard, Tony Eades, Adam Voigt, Nicolle Jenkins, Amy Jacobson, Nikki Milne, Marny Lishman, Dr Joe Kosterich, Kimm Seeling Smith, Jason Featherby, Lisanne Iriks and Demelza Leonard. The media that we chatted to included 3AW's Luca Gonano and Nine's Weekend Today Erin Bouda. These episodes particularly are wonderful as they are regulars on the #MeetTheMedia circuit and deliver such valuable advice and content for all budding experts and commentators.
The once slightly nervous psychologist “Don't put me near a camera. I only want to do print.” was one of the first conversations that this expert expressed to the Media Stable team back six years ago. This self-confessed shy, nervous, and reserved professional did not want to have anything to do with TV. Now is one of the most recognised psychologists in Western Australia as a regular on Channel Nine News. Dr Marny Lishman is a Health and community Psychologist who has hammered home a media profile over radio, print, online and her original greatest fear TV. A psychologist is incredibly powerful for media as they have the content that fascinates an audience and there is no shortage of opportunities if you put your hand up. Marny certainly puts her hand up and delivers. What I think you will get from listening to Marny's story is that you will connect with her on many levels from her initial concerns, worries and also the hurdles in front of her to be successful in media. From doing interviews in a closet, dropping kids to play in the park while Mum does a radio interview to just taking on the mountain that was her first TV interview. Marny is very real, so authentic and such a natural communicator that she does not need to try hard to help you understand what is going on. The other key takeaway that you should look out for in this podcast is the organic nature that Marny has built her reputation. From social media post, to column writer, to radio to television. There is a calmness and a sense that quality content will find a home in media and not just lay idle on a blog. That investment in herself to get her content out wider is truly paying off.

We chat about how you can't be everything to everyone and why it is important to be authentic (not just a buzz word) when building your personal brand.
