Danielle Laidley is no stranger to the media. As a player in the West Coast Eagles' inaugural team and then after being traded to North Melbourne Football Club, Dani experienced two very different levels of media interest in AFL players. The coverage was frenzied and prolonged. In May 2020, at the end of a crystal meth-fuelled bender, Dani Laidley was arrested. In conversation with Luke Darcy she tells us exactly how that arrest came about, as we shine a light on the self-leadership Dani taps into at each twist and turn. While in custody that night, Victoria police officers took and distributed photos of her with makeup streaming down her face. The invasive photos made front page news, publicly revealing Dani to the world for the first time. Prior to that moment, we had all known Dean Laidley, the champion premiership-winning footballer with the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne, who went on to be an outstanding senior coach at North Melbourne Football Club for seven seasons. We are in awe at the courage and mental resilience it took for Dani to essentially live two lives while excelling in the brutal, alpha competitive world of professional AFL football. From her gender dysphoria diagnosis, to her inspiring work as an advocate for the transgender community, to her aspirations to one day coach in the AFL again, you're going to love this conversation with a woman, who despite all odds, is thriving, equal parts proud and humble, and leading the way for so many. Start your leadership journey today. Head to Aleda Collective to find out more about our signature, cross industry collaboration program, Aleda Connect. Curated and facilitated by experts, running for 8 fortnightly sessions, Aleda Connect is the learning experience of a life-time. Learn. Lead. Really Interesting Women Podcast Ep. 111 Danielle LaidleyDanielle Laidley had an illustrious career as an AFL player and in 1996 won a premiership with the North Melbourne Football Club. She subsequently became one of the youngest head coaches in the league's history at the age of 36 and was then inducted into the club's hall of fame. But her amazing career and life were never what they seemed on the surface. Danielle faced a private and lifelong battle with gender dysphoria and that constant struggle with her identity led eventually to legal troubles and addiction issues...which, in other circumstances, may have led to her undertaking a private recovery. But in her case, it was all cruelly and publicly exposed without her consent or knowledge. And then came the incredible journey to recovery. I think it would be fair to say Danielle is the most prominent transgender person in the country. The opportunity to reveal who she really was was taken away from her by police at the St Kilda police station when photos were taken and distributed publicly without her knowledge or consent . And that was how her own children found out. Danielle is now taking back control of her own story and it's through podcasts such as this one and a documentary streaming on Stan (see below). It's an important episode and can help people understand. "This is a massive day for the North Melbourne Football Club. Welcome home Alastair."
Lou 'The Lip' Richards was an icon of Australian football in the latter half of the twentieth century. He was an excellent player, playing 250 games for Collingwood between 1941 and 1955, including captaining the 1953 premiership. But he found fame in his home town of Melbourne as a columnist, television wit, and play by play commentator. He died in 2017, and was honoured at a state funeral. Friend and North Melbourne administrator Ron Joseph delivered an excellent eulogy, much of it pitched in Lou's voice, that did justice to Richards' cheekiness and charm.
