Danielle Laidley is no stranger to the media. As a player in the West Coast Eagles' inaugural team and then after being traded to North Melbourne Football Club, Dani experienced two very different levels of media interest in AFL players. Then as coach of North Melbourne, Dani experienced some of the toughest scrutiny from sports media and fans. And in 2020, she experienced the voracity of the media when Victoria Police leaked images of Dani to the media and revealed to the public that Dani was undergoing a gender transition, having suffered gender dysphoria throughout her life. The coverage was frenzied and prolonged. This week, Nic Hayes is joined by Danielle Laidley who shares her experience in the media across her career, and what she's doing in the media now that she's taken back the narrative, working in transgender advocacy and as a regular sports columnist. Dani and Nic discuss: What it's like to be in the cut and thrust of weekly games and media spotlight as an AFL player and coach, riding the waves of speculation and interest in North Melbourne moving to the Gold Coast, her teammate Wayne Carey, and the scrutiny following lost games among many other fascinating moments in her career How she flew under the radar in Melbourne after being traded from West Coast to North Melbourne How writing a book and filming documentary Revealed – Danielle Laidley: Two Tribes in partnership with Eddie McGuire all came about Dani's pick for top five NMFC players and her pick for the GOAT – “you could kick the ball anywhere, and he'll mark it” The Experts Podcast is hosted by media professional and commentator, Nic Hayes. I have for a while been thinking about a solo podcast that I get to interview my media mates and some amazing experts. I still want to get their backstory told, their motivations identified. I want to give you everything that you need to understand what it takes. On The Experts podcast this week Nic Hayes and Carmen Braidwood talk to sports broadcasting royalty Glenn Mitchell. The Perth broadcaster who left the ABC eleven years and now hosting a breakfast program on Curtin Radio didn't put up any guards or barriers to the questions thrown at him about his career and life generally. Glenn talked candidly on his departure from the ABC after twenty-one years, his battle with mental health and his ongoing work in that space. There was a lot of laughs and intriguing responses from the great broadcaster from his time calling cricket, Olympic Games, AFL, Commonwealth Games, and other sports needing his ability to tell an audience what is going on in words. Nic raises from the start of the podcast the frog joke Kerry O'Keeffe told and Glenn's response to this is a classic. A joke that he shares openly with Kerry O'Keeffe “I spent 21 years at the ABC, covered Olympic Games, cricket, Commonwealth Games and the thing I remembered for most is sitting next to an idiot telling a story about a frog.” Mitchell is sharp, he is witty, and he is enjoying the media commitments that he has with the various media houses today including Curtin, SportFM, and Seven. That voice is as velvet as it was calling Australian Cricket, or The Olympic Games and you can hear that he is in a good place. Other topics The Experts team got to talk to Glenn about was who he believes are Australia's greats in the broadcasting and commentating space. Glenn fell into commentating by accident but forged an amazing career over three decades and identifies who he thinks does it better than others. What his most memorable sporting moment might surprise you. The thirty minutes focus on Glenn Mitchell is certainly worth your time for sport, media, and broadcasting goodness.

This week on the podcast we talk purpose and what it means to businesses and how it can help them become better at what they do both internally and externally. You will quickly gather that our guest has a lot to offer to small, medium, and big business in understanding what we do and why we do it. It's a fascinating chat that anyone that is in leadership or owns a business should go through the exercise of discovering more about themselves. Too often we are caught up in our business and not working on our business. Dave Clare is an author, coach, speaker, and trainer in all things purpose. When you listen to Dave riff about the very core things that he is obviously passionate and enthusiastic about you can hear it in his voice (and Canadian accent) that he is an engaging speaker and presenter. His ability to break down complicated thinking or theories that a business owner might have is clearly conveyed back to them in what they can understand but maybe more importantly what their customers “who they choose to serve” can easily understand. The chat has so much value, but this did catch the attention of our co-hosts Carmen and Nic when Dave started talking about SHIT values. An acronym that every business seems to claim as their values, Service, Honesty, Integrity, and Trust. These are the very core for every business and should be taken as a given. It's the values that are unique to you and your business you need to make sure are published and adhered to from the top down that will make you stand out. The way Dave articulates this is again why all businesses need to get coached regularly through this process. Without doubt this podcast will make you think. The other gold that you should be looking out for is the FLOW. Another great message hit home is that employees are looking for coaches and not bosses. Make sure you learn the number one rule don't call your employees “staff”, a mistake Nic Hayes is not likely to repeat. Right from the start of this chat we are working on our business which you can play along by asking the same questions with your business. If you can get Dave into your office to look at your purpose and values, be assured the effort and the investment is well worth it.

While in media we can see so much is changing but there is so much that hasn't. There are elements of communication that will remain the same forever and the very basics are never lost. Sure, the platforms are changing, the audiences have greater choice, and we are experiencing very unusual times. This week we talk to a veteran of media, a producer across radio and television. He has also dabbled in the corporate communications world which really gives this expert a well-rounded approach to communications. Phil Sylvester is the General Manager of Media Stable based in Sydney and his pedigree of media is quite phenomenal. Having worked with some of Australia's most influential presenters and programs he now controls the east coast region of Media Stable supported by a very capable team of journalists and engagement managers. Phil is a student of ‘earned media' and ‘content marketing' in fact Phil was doing it long before a term was coined for it. There is a reason why corporates and big business like to employ media people and journalists. They get communication. From the start of the podcast Phil is filling us with content gold and you can hear the messages come out from this great storyteller. His experience and high energy and love for media is rare these days particularly from the behind-the-scenes space of an agency like Media Stable. Not short of an opinion or a position he certainly has made an incredible mark on the experts that frequent the services of Media Stable. They have benefitted with greater engagement, better pitches, and storytelling. Even crafty communicators and teachers of media Carmen Braidwood and Nic Hayes felt like they got a good old-fashioned communications lesson from Phil. Experience and relationships are everything in media and we get to hear from a master in this podcast. While the trends will continue to change the fundamentals of communication don't. We must be better in this space and be careful that you don't get caught up in the glitz and glamour of those pretending that they know media and communications.

A chance for Carmen Braidwood and Nic Hayes to properly catch up and have a chat about each other. A deep dive into what each brings to the table when it comes to working with the media. What they bring to the communications cycle and how to prepare, pitch and engage media. Some might say this is a little ‘self-indulgent' but after listening to the two of them you get to understand a little better where they sit in the media cycle. Carmen is a media professional and without doubt the podcast has picked up to new levels of quality and value for the listener. Her business “Confidence on Camera” is critical in a world where so much content is presented online and in video format. The ability to produce, present, and amplify your messages and opinions through the lens has become so critical for small and medium sized businesses. Nic has worked in media 25 plus years now and predominately behind the scenes in the media intelligence sector, PR, journalism and now running Media Stable a platform where experts and media connect through quality content. A tool that media and businesses have been using over the last decade and getting great results for their personal and business brand. The chance for Carms and Nic to riff without notice is what they will both say is the most fun. You listen to them each week interviewing a fascinating expert or media but what is it that each of them does? What do they enjoy? Where did it all start? It's a good little insight into the two presenters of The Experts from where they have been, where they are and where they are going.

Its been a big week in WA. A lockdown, devastating fires and even a possible cyclone. Nic Hayes from Media Stable told Tony McManus that "the media stood up big time this week." This is despite criticism running rampant on social media over the questions that some journalists have asked Premier Mark McGowan during the press conferences held during the week.  Nic says that a journalists role is to hold the government to account which he says all media did extremely well.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week I welcomed back Nick Hayes, Managing Director of Media Stable, to discuss his observations across the media landscape and media consumption over the last six to nine months during this changeable period.Nick explains is that, as he predicted in the last podcast, that there's been a real move back to traditional forms of media, in particular radio.  We really had a great discussion about becoming more discerning in our media consumption and sense making, particularly recognising the leanings, particularly the political orientation, of the sources that you're listening to. We also talked about the pitfalls of going to social media as a source of news and also the concept of consuming too much information.Nick is really articulate and has a great sense of humour. He brings a very grounded and grown up perspective to the topic of news and media in general.

The Experts powered by Media Stable

We take a slightly different direction with the podcast this week by not interviewing an expert or a media professional but instead possibly Australia's leading media expert in John Solvander. New Zealand will likely try to claim him like they try to claim pavlova, Russell Crowe and Split Enz but that accent still squirreled away is a dead giveaway. John Solvander is the Director of Media Engagement, an owner of Media Stable and what Nic Hayes refers to as the engine behind the success of the business. In fact his exact words to many of the experts as they are onboarding with Media Stable “If Media Stable was an orchestra then John would be the conductor”. We kind of had to just throw this on John to do the podcast and not let him think about it too much. Many media that have worked with John will know its never about him. It's about the story and the audience.  He has worked in media for 25 years, and only about 90 minutes of that would've been 'on-air'.  He is a behind-the-scenes professional, offering support, guidance and mentoring to our experts.  He has crossed paths with a lot of media personnel along the journey. While it might seem a little self-indulgent from a Media Stable's perspective to put John Solvander up to chat on The Experts Podcast I can assure you the true value is yours. What this man doesn't know about media isn't worth knowing and his commitment to his craft is exemplary. John is one of the greatest assets of Media Stable we just thought it was worth your while to know a little about his back story. Enjoy!

Episode 44 - Interview with Media Expert Nic Hayes Have you ever wondered why some experts are able to get press coverage and others aren't? Have you ever wondered if being in the media really has that bigger impact on your business growth as an expert? Have you wondered what it takes to be able to get onto primetime television or identify the best media outlets for you to share your message? One of the most common questions I get asked is, "Is media really worth it?" So what I say to people is "yes, absolutely, however it depends on the stage of your practice and how much it's growing and also depends on how clear you are around your message." This is a very special interview with the Founder of Media Stable Nic Hayes who is a trusted advisor to a large number of experts in Australia and well respected within the speaking community. In this interview, you'll hear me ask him questions about How do you get on tv after writing a book? How do you get more gigs? What does the media want from us as experts? Take a listen. Nic will also share about the Meet the Media events that are coming up very soon in Sydney and Melbourne. I recommend this event to all my clients. Take a deep dive into the current world of media with Nic Hayes, Founder and Managing Director of Media Stable.Nic shares how he spotted an opportunity in the changing media landscape to create Media Stable, which actively links experts and their views with media outlets to produce informed and trusted content.Through this conversation Nic provides an insightful commentary of the full range of media platforms, from traditional forms of print, TV and Radio through to online and social media, as well as the changes in our consumer behaviour. Interestingly Nic explains how, through a growing erosion of trust in social media content, there is the potential for people to return to the more traditional forms of media once they gain more awareness of the often-questionable credibility and decide to become more discerning media consumers. We also spend time discussing the impact of content that is aimed at giving people what they WANT versus giving people what they NEED, as well as the importance of real human relationships and interaction.Nic is a wonderfully engaging as well as knowledgeable man, which makes this conversations both entertaining and thought provoking, and leaves the listener with the challenge to consider a more discerning consumption of media in day to day life.

Nic Hayes runs Media Stable, a company that connects thought leaders with traditional media outlets wanting experts to comment on topical issues. Given his company represents 450 professional experts, Nic is well placed to see both sides of the media exposure coin: (a) what does the media want in an expert commentator, and (b) what can experts do to make themselves a more appealing interview subject for journalists and broadcast media hosts. Add value In this wide-ranging chat with Trevor Young, Nic explains how journalists, editors and producers are constantly on the lookout for expert talent, thought leaders who can add value to the stories they're pulling together for their audience. He says understanding the media outlet you're pitching too is crucial, so too is having a strong news hook that will grab the journalist or producer straight away. Other tips from Nic: Make yourself available! Professional experts are very busy people but they still make the effort to take the media's calls at a moment's notice. Journalists are often on a tight deadline: if you can help them with their story in a timely fashion, that gets noticed!Deliver the best possible interview that you can - "that will get you asked back", says Nic.Provide great quotes and soundbites that will help bring the media's stories come to life. Importantly, there are opportunities at the lower end of the media scale that over time can help professional experts gain experience and confidence so when a more prestigious media outlet comes calling, the expert is ready to deliver a high standard of commentary.   Nic also provides examples of some of Media Stable experts who are generating valuable editorial exposure by providing the media exactly what they're after.
