James and Erin (and coming March 2020, Tracy!) take deep dives into every Fall Out Boy song, selecting one lyric that warrants discussion and then seeing where the conversation goes!
Erin King, James Anderson, and Tracy
As part of the Scavengers Scramble, Tay and Syd from The Lost Years podcast did a deep dive on a lyric from Taylor Swift's amazing, epic, transcendent, cathartic, marathon 10 Minute Version of what some have called the best song she's ever written: All Too Well! If you've ever felt lost in translation, you're not asking too much, because this ep is a masterpiece, now that they've scrambled it up. Theme song: "You Can't Fail" by Destiny & Time
Welcome back to a podcast that is definitely only about Fall Out Boy lyrics and not remotely about anything other than that topic. Definitely not drugs. We never talk about drugs when discussing Fall Out Boy. Other non-drug talking points: Is Erin’s horse a dog? Should you put your genitals in sugar water? James names Erin’s next dog. Plus, fun lead facts, and we hold Tracy hostage! "Hey your politics is getting in my Fall Out Boy song!" "No, your Fall Out Boy song is getting in my politics!" We've discovered the most political track that the boys have made up to the current album and boy is it a doozy. As a result we took this episode a little more seriously than usual. ... I'm kidding. We were very much ourselves. Just with a "Remember the Bush presidencies?" sheen to them! Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
It's all about sex, baby. And religion.... again. Fall Out Boy definitely has its themes. Enjoy our off-topic introduction but I promise we get to the lyric eventually. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time.
Welcome to Thnks Fr Th Mndgrns, a weekly podcast where we deep-dive into the lyrics we THOUGHT we heard. Additional talking points: swan nose boners, goo, moth mouths, door sounds. The line from this song is gross, but we take that as a challenge this week. We go some PLACES. Like what happens when you burn...various things, or what kind of JELLO mold would you like....for various occasions. We also find some time to do some really interesting analysis about the song lyric! For no reason whatsoever, here's a link in the show notes!: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/tupac-shakur-s-ashes-smoked-2346879.html Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
CW: Suicide We discuss how the "Donnie" in the title refers to Donnie Hathaway who allegedly committed suicide in 1979 and we bring up Pete's attempted suicides as well. I (Tracy) don't think this episode gets as heavy as the "You're Crashing But You're No Wave" episode but we do bring up suicide more explicitly than we do in other episodes. We get into some very convoluted theories about who the whos and ones are and if take a drink of water every time we exclaim "or!" you'll be overhydrated. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Let’s talk about something important: This scene from Glengarry Glen Ross. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6Lf8GtMe4M Let’s talk about something else important: This SNL sketch parodying said scene from Glengarry Glen Ross. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_vSirIJEsY Following this, James propositions Brad Pitt, spoils the most gut wrenching moment of The Never-ending Story, and then is Kristy Yamaguchi. You should seriously consider subscribing to our Patreon for $2 a month if only for the numerous chunks of this episode that got cut for bonus content. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
This episode has literally everything. Go on: name something? Discussion of financial systems? Got it. Discussion of record sales and how they're tracked? Got that too. A musical challenge from Tracy that shouldn't have worked by kind of almost did? Oh you better believe we got that. All of this, plus the most whiplashy shift from main section to social media you've ever heard. Thnks Fr Th Lrcs: You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never GUESS what's going to come next. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Wish you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you don't want to miss this one. Who's Pete Rose? Come, let James lead you to the answer. Hear Erin's flawless lyric delivery and stick around to the end for a special post-social media Tracy song surprise. We really pack a lot of good stuff in this one. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We get a call in from a famous fan, and discover which celebrity is the devil. CW: Brief discussion of Christianity/sin. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
This is an episode that goes to show that we do very well with analyzing lyrics, but when the lyric is short and we figure it out pretty quickly....well, we still find some stuff to talk about. Hang on to your privymembers. This one is...something else. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Take a chance on this episode. It's a guaranteed heat wave in your ears. Today we peer-review Pete's lyric writing, learn what the heck a heatwave is (in this economy???), and make plans for about 50 different merch items. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
What is the “right” amount of doomed/cursed for chocolate to be? How optimistic or pessimistic do you prefer your chocolate? Is this a magnets podcast? How do you reverse French kiss? Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
In this episode we discuss the final track of Infinity on High. Who's a canary? Who's a coal mine? Who's the carbon monoxide? DO we know what Pete means? Also we do a wrap-up of the album and talk about future plans for the show! Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
CW: Murder, Arson, Racism, Wrongful Incarceration, Police Brutality & Misconduct Today's episode is a somber one. The song is about the incarceration of Fred Hampton Jr. and James tells us the story of Fred Hampton and Fred Hampton Jr. Sources and further reading: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/qa-pete-wentz-83467/ https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/radical-without-a-cause/Content?oid=896749 https://the-spark.net/np655602.html https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1993-05-20-9305200154-story.html Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We're back! Erin has a functioning computer, but because of the untimely demise of her previous one and the fact that she hadn't backed it up after we recorded this episode the first time, this is a re-record (and a damn good one, if we do say so ourselves). Tracy manifests some accents, Erin gets the name of the song wrong and also doesn't know the difference between Twitch and Twitter, and James is the glue holding the episode together, so everyone should head over to Twitter and thank him for that. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
This week Tracy and James arrrr looking at a song that is full of H's. Which city is speaking? Which Iowa newspaper is this song a clear reference to? What American betrayal did Dante predict? How can you get a postcard from Tracy? Find out this week on Thnks Fr th Lrcs! Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
What does carpal tunnel have to do with the tunnel of love? Are these love songs or are you just genuinely cunning? Why can't Tracy write episode descriptions without asking a million questions? Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Talking points: Does Pete get his lyrics from a “Wizard Of Oz”-themed magnetic poetry set? Sheets, and Sheetz. Erin scares herself with a mirror. French orgasms. Threesomes. TW: Mention of suicide (because Fall Out Boy) Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
This episode has so much going for it and some of that even includes a discussion of the song. Tracy rolls out some Wisconsin-centric novelty music, Erin reveals a possible future creative endeavor, and James teaches us about walking the plank. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
It's happening! Today we cover the song from which we got the inspiration for our podcast name. Thnks fr th mmrs, everyone. We promise these ones are great and a lot about the movie "Closer". It gets raunchy. Feat. Some sweet Daisy meows. See if you can catch them all! There are two. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Two out of three of us really like this song and one of us is just so-so on it, but we all agree that it could very well be a song from a later album. Talking points: What does God look like? Is God crying just rain? Which sin gets you stuck in a river of poo for eternity? Consonants are more waterproof than vowels. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
On this, the best song on the album, the gang talks about teen terminal disease romances, chapels, viagra, and what Pete Wentz is the king of. All that and James making a complete fool of himself with the lyrics that his brain WANTS there to be! Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
How can I compare thee to a lawyer? Let me count the ways. James and Tracy take their last chance to dissect some lyrics while Erin is away. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
This ain’t a normal lyric, it’s James’s most-anticipated lyric! Tracy drops spaghetti on the floor, Fall Out Boy manages to get the attention of Justin L. after his breakup with Christine P., and the word “goddamn” is either incendiary or packs a punch, depending on how sweet and innocent a boy James is—I mean, uh, how sweet and innocent the listener is. Also, Tracy does social media on this episode, so you know you want to listen, because Tracy does the best social media. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
Highlights of today's episode: what does "conjugal visit" mean, when did we learn that definition, and how are we all wrong about what we think it means? Also, what CAN you dissect until it doesn't mean a thing any more. Finally, what is "this"? Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Welcome! It's here! We're onto the third album, "Infinity on High" starting off with "Thriller". It's awesome and wonderful and we hope you love it! Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Put your ear to the speaker, we've got another new episode! "XO" is the last song off "From Under the Cork Tree" proper and it's a very good one. Enjoy! Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Hey, everyone, and welcome to Thnks fr th Lrcs. Today's discussion topics: -When you're bored, do you want attention? -Hips and hearts vs. hips and cars -Is Pete making fun of us? -Does Pete shit poetry? Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
In this episode about the third and final single from FUCT, we pick a relatively short line from the song (it happens to be Erin's favorite) and then try to pick apart what it does and does not imply. Listen in fascination as James KEEPS taking swings at it. (This is James typing) But by the end, it is an EXCELLENT analysis of an EXCELLENT song. Theme Song: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We found the cure for growing older. Hint: you're the only place that feels like home. Come listen for some secrets that weren't meant to be told! Okay, I'm done now. Enjoy the show! Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time Did I mention I found the cure to growing older?
Sometimes we have songs that are real jams, but when it comes time to break the lyrics down, we realize we either don't interpret them the same way, or don't actually know what the lyrics are getting at. Those can make for the most interesting conversations because we don't all start out on the same page, but we usually end up there. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
In this episode we get INTO the metaphors and imagery associated with our line. Is Pete giving us a clue to where the drugs are hidden? Is he describing his addiction? Or is something more nefarious going on? Also, we don't get into it on the episode, but we did want to note that this song contains a word that, when this album came out, wasn't very well known as a racial slur for the Romani (it starts with a G). We don't condone its usage and we have every faith that FOB would not use it in a concert in 2020. But without pointing it out, people don't learn about this kind of thing. Theme Song: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Welcome to track seven! We have a lot of fun, as usual, and come up with some hair-brained schemes, as usual. All in all it's a pretty usual episode since our definition of usual is buckwild. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Patrick says this was the song he'd have cut from the album if he had to cut one, but we think that would be a travesty. It's dark, it's gritty, it's gorgeous, and as track 6, it slows the album down for a minute before the pace picks up again with 7 Minutes In Heaven (Atavan Halen). Stick around for the social media section at the end, where Tracy and Erin just absolutely lose it. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
This was one of the songs that we skipped on the acoustic EP, because we wanted to talk about it in the context of FUCT. And we get INTO it. Also included: basically a full rundown of the movie Dirty Dancing, a STARTLING REALIZATION about this song's true meaning, Patrick Swayze's butt. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
James, Erin, and Tracy are watching you from the closet. Hang on. That's creepy, right? They discuss this and more in this cool little episode you're looking at. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
"Dance, Dance" is the second single off of "From Under the Cork Tree", and Patrick Stump claims it's the best thing he's ever written. It was a raging success, and rightly so because it is a JAM. It also has a hidden lyric that we find baffling in a number of ways. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
We actually get to, and stick to, the point in this episode, which means it's a shorter one. We're talking about the second track on FUCT, a song that is a good transition from the first track to the third one. It's also an official Thnks Fr Th Lrcs Favored Track from this album (we all like it a lot.) Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We are here with the first track from "From Under The Cork Tree" and we're ready to party. We hope you enjoy the beginning of what is sure to be a glorious album adventure. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We wrap up our discussion of Fall Out Boy's acoustic EP with what is actually sort of an adorable love song, named after a David Bowie lyric. It's got a bit of a Bruce Springsteen, James Dean, "us against the world" flavor to it that we just find really endearing.
Why is this audio file so long? The time from the last word of the statement to the last second of the track totals 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 8 minutes and 46 seconds doesn't sound like a long time until you are confronted with just how long it can drag on. 8 minutes and 46 seconds is how long it took to end George Floyd's life [https://www.8m46s.com]. At the Scavengers Network, we support the nationwide protests against police brutality; because Black Lives Matter. It is not enough to simply be “not racist”. You must be anti-racist. This is not a matter of “differing politics” nor is it something that is up for debate. This is about human and civil rights. We must make Black voices heard. Amplify and listen to Black voices. In the first of two episodes about the acoustic EP "My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue", we talk about spilling guts. IT'S A METAPHOR. About the difference between revealing your secrets and revealing someone else's. It's a pretty gross line, but that acoustic guitar sounds so nice! Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
This is it. The final song from "Take This To Your Grave". We send off this album by discussing a lyric with a word that may or may not be there. We give our final thoughts on the album and get excited for what's next to come. Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
Songs that are about a specific time in your life have to be weird to continue to perform once you are no longer in that time of your life. Examples discussed in this episode include “What’s My Age Again” performed by a now-definitely-not-23 Mark Hoppus, pretty much any song of Taylor Swift’s “Red” album, and, yes, track 11 off of “Take This to Your Grave”. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
Is this song a sign of Fall Out Boy maturing? Could it be the case even if it's an old song remade? (You'll remember this is the song we skipped on Evening Out With Your Girlfriend) Also, what was it like for Patrick to hand over lyric writing duties to Pete? All of these questions are...well, maybe not answered, but certainly discussed on this episode of Thnks Fr Th Lrcs Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
We would catch a grenade for ya. Jump in front of a train for ya. Oh, wait. Wrong song. This one mentions neither grenades nor jumping past the title but we do talk about one fellow named Chris an awful lot. Plus there's a bonus discussion about words and not Fall Out Boy on the Patreon at patreon.com/thescavengersnetwork . Theme Music: "You Can't Fail" by Density & Time
What does the act of forgetting about someone look like? What if we didn’t have to breathe to live? How many legs is too many? If you could forget a bad experience, would you? All these existential questions and more on this episode about “The Pros and Cons of Breathing”, track 8 off of “Take This To Your Grave”. Theme Music: “You Can’t Fail” by Density & Time
In this episode, we discuss words with three meanings and there's a bit of a disagreement about which meaning was intended on one of them! A great discussion all around! Pssst go over to the Patreon at patreon.com/thescavengersnetwork for a bonus discussion of a different part of the song!
We're bringing you this episode as gracefully as we can and hopefully with less destruction than a sinking ship. James, Erin, and Tracy discuss how differently music changes their moods and we are reminded than Erin gives no f***s. Theme music: "You Can't Fail" by Density and Time
