In the luminous tapestry of today's conversation, we welcome the venerable Robert Thurman, a scholar, author, and advocate of Tibetan Buddhism. Robert Thurman, renowned for his dedication to the teachings of the Buddha and his efforts to bridge Eastern wisdom with Western understanding, graced us with profound insights and enlightening anecdotes. The dialogue began with Thurman's evocative recollection of ancient India, a land brimming with spiritual richness, transcending time and geography. He posited that Jesus might have journeyed to India, absorbing the profound spiritual sciences there. This blend of historical musings and spiritual traditions set the tone for a discussion that seamlessly wove past and present, highlighting the timeless relevance of spiritual exploration.Thurman's journey into Tibetan Buddhism, a path not tread lightly, was marked by his initial attraction to Indian Buddhism.Upon his arrival in India in 1962, he discovered the Tibetans as the true custodians of Buddhist wisdom, owing to the transformative historical upheavals that India had undergone. His narrative was imbued with both humor and deep reverence as he recounted how the Tibetans, having preserved their monastic traditions, became his spiritual guides. This realization propelled him into the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, leading to a lifelong commitment to compassion and enlightenment. One of the most captivating segments of our dialogue was Thurman's exploration of the fierce Buddhas. Often misunderstood, these fierce deities embody a protective and transformative energy, akin to a mother's ferocious love in shielding her child from danger. Thurman emphasized that these fierce Buddhas help practitioners confront and conquer the darker aspects of their subconscious, leading to profound spiritual liberation. "The purpose of deep spiritual psychotherapy," he explained, "is to conquer those negative things in the unconscious, so they don't drag you in a bad way when you're reborn."SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYS:Compassion as the Core of Enlightenment: Thurman reiterated that the essence of Buddhism lies in compassion and understanding. True enlightenment is not just about personal liberation but about alleviating the suffering of all beings.Interconnectedness of Life: The dialogue underscored the Buddhist belief in the interconnectedness of all life. Thurman's teachings remind us that our actions ripple through time and space, influencing countless lives.Embracing Fierce Compassion: The concept of fierce Buddhas teaches us that true compassion sometimes requires a fierce, protective stance. This fierce compassion is essential in confronting and transforming the negative forces within and around us.Thurman's reflections on the Buddha's enlightenment journey provided a nuanced understanding of spiritual awakening. Contrary to popular belief, the Buddha's path was not a straightforward ascent to enlightenment but a deeply human journey marked by trials and realizations. His initial indulgence in severe asceticism, followed by the rejection of both self-indulgence and self-mortification, culminated in the Middle Way. This profound balance, Thurman emphasized, is the essence of Buddhist practice. The conversation ventured into the realms of metaphysics and the nature of reality, with Thurman sharing insights into the Buddhist perspective of time and existence. He illustrated how advanced meditators can perceive the universe in its micro and macro dimensions, experiencing a reality that transcends conventional notions of time and space. This perspective resonates with the modern scientific understanding of the universe as a vast, interconnected web of energy and consciousness. In our concluding thoughts, Thurman's wisdom resonated deeply, offering a beacon of clarity and hope. His teachings remind us that the path to enlightenment is accessible to all, grounded in compassion, interconnectedness, and the courage to confront our inner and outer challenges. As we navigate our spiritual journeys, let us embrace these timeless truths and strive to awaken the Buddha within us.Please enjoy my conversation with Robert Thurman.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Anika and Liz don their gaudiest statement necklaces and medallions and get the band back together for an adventure in Millennial Greige, 46 years before TikTok invented that concept. Yes! It's time to discuss Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and yes, this episode is 90 minutes long, but please note that's still shorter than the movie itself. And we have a lot to talk about! Such as... Content note: In 2014, actor Stephen Collins admitted to "inappropriate sexual conduct with three female minors". We have chosen to talk about his character, but not his performance - as far as the two can be separated. Hot take: we like The Motion Picture Anika argues that Spock is the protagonist of The Motion Picture. Kirk is also in this movie. It's too often forgotten that Persis Khambatta is the first woman of colour to play the female lead in a Star Trek film (which is separate from the problem where, up until 2009, the films kept introducing new female leads rather than ever developing Uhura…) "My oath of celibacy is on record." Gene. What the fuck. Season 4 of Discovery has a lot of The Motion Picture in its DNA … and so does SNW! (Anika has a strong argument that Christine's characterisation in SNW owes more to this film than TOS) Possibly our most controversial opinion: we mostly like the uniforms Antimatter Pod: "We don't ship Kirk/Spock." Also Antimatter Pod: " Anyone who thinks that this movie is not about Kirk and Spock being in love is not watching this movie." Anika tells Liz about The Lost Years by JM Dillard, queen of the fiery red-haired psychic OFC

Inbetweeners are the animators who draw the pages in between the lead animators' key frames. The in between doesn't get a lot of attention, but it is essential to move the animation forward. The same concept applies to the “in between era” that connects Walt Disney's passing to the Disney Renaissance. A tumultuous time period which often only gets a few chapters in history and is usually known only for mediocre box-office hits, now has its own book. Courtney and Emily welcome storyboard artist, screenwriter, director, and author, Stephen Anderson, to talk about that period that took us from the Walt Disney era to the Disney Renaissance in his book, “Disney In-Between: The Lost Years 1966-1986.” Anderson's book gives you an in depth history of lessons animators, writers, directors, and studio executives learned while navigating how to run the Disney studio and Disney brand without Walt. Welcome to the show today! We are in the middle of Smart Girl Summer. Today we are with one of my favorite smart women in the world, Beth McCord, better known as Your Enneagram Coach. I love doing these smart girl summer episodes. I learned quite a bit and I'm sure you will too. Beth McCord is an accomplished Enneagram speaker, author, coach, and teacher with over two decades of dedicated experience. In her new book, The Enneagram for Moms: See the True Colors of Yourself and Your Children as God Intends, Beth blends Enneagram wisdom with practical insights to foster authentic and healthy family dynamics. Join Beth and I as we talk about: What is working for businesses in 2024 Evaluating what is working and making changes How to maximize our time Choosing new projects What Beth is working on now Best practice for creating online courses Favorite quotes: “There is a lot of being curious, figuring things out, and being flexible. Being flexible is one of the biggest things.” (9:06 audio) “What can we do with the time we have and maximize it? That is the key here.” (12:57 audio) “God created her to be her personality for her kids and their personalities. He didn't make a mistake, so how can we celebrate that, and how can we own our weaknesses but not in a shameful, guilty, judging way? How can we see those and grow from them?” (24:45 audio) “With courses, how can you say the same content and message as quickly, efficiently, practical, and applicable as possible? I would aim for bite-sized lessons.” ( (26:54 audio) Coaching this week: (29:47 audio) Escaping the Mediocrity Trap: A Guide to Getting Unstuck In this week's coaching, I share tips for recognizing mediocrity situations and practical steps to escape the mediocrity trip. The mediocrity trap is one of the trickiest ruts to escape. Unlike terrible situations that, once you are out, often turn into funny stories or proud memories, mediocre situations drag on and become what I call the "Lost Years." The biggest obstacle to getting unstuck is often our own mindset. Don't settle for a life that's just okay. Recommendations: (41:00 audio) This week's recommendation is Spotifiy's free audio books. If you have Spotify Premium, this year they're including free audio books in their membership. I looked and all of my books are available. Enjoy! The Tatuaje Cojonu line was born out of the Seleccion de Cazadore (aka Brown Label) line where Tatuaje owner, Pete Johnson, asked master blender, Don Pepin Garcia to make a stronger blend. The name came from Don Pepin saying that the blend had “cojonu”, Cuban slang for “cojones” or “balls”. The name stuck and Pete Johnson decided to release the line in a new vitola every three years. In 2012, Pete Johnson put the line in hiatus, but it returned in 2021. He released the Cojonu 2015 and the 2018 in 2022 and 2023 respectively and called them the “Lost Years”. Vitola: Double Robusto Size: 5 x 55 Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan Country of Origin: Nicaragua Factory: My Father S.A. MSRP: $13.00 Final Score: 90

Keith Morrison goes inside the twisted saga of the infamous New York real estate heir Robert Durst, revealing stories of his life little known by the public.
People use the term “the lost years” differently when speaking of Saturday Night Live, but this podcast is using it specifically from the time Lorne Michaels left the show after season five up until season eleven. Aside from Eddie Murphy's presence on the show, these are the sketches that are less remembered today because they weren't rerun on Comedy Central in the 2000s as much and they're largely absent from the cache of episodes preserved online today. And that's too bad, because this is when the show boasted some legends in the cast — Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal, Joan Cusack, Robert Downey Jr., Martin Short and Damon Wayans among them, as well as queer cast members Terry Sweeney, Denny Dillon and Danitra Vance. The sketches (and click here if you want to watch them): “SoHo Lesbians” (S6E10: Debbie Harry) “Little Richard Simmons” (S7E1: No host) “James Coburn Is a Homosexual” (S7E11: James Coburn) “Focus on Film: Making Love” (S7E12: Bruce Dern) “Penny Lane” (S10E11: Roy Scheider) “Pinklisting” (S11E1: Madonna) “Mr. Monopoly” (S11E12: Griffin Dunne) Monologue (S11E16: Catherine Oxenberg) “Lesbian Pick-Ups” (S11E18: Anjelica Huston) Go shop at our TeePublic store!
