Save your knees and shoulders from the little discomfort doing usual activities or some swelling and inflammation. If you aren't sure whether you need physical therapy, you should get a referral, just need a massage or to lay off for a few days, this is your episode.  I'm no stranger to physical therapy, but I am a foreigner in seeking support for any issues I've got. Mine have all come from some acute trauma or injury. I knew it and the answer was obvious, maybe for you too — to save your knees and shoulders without surgery!   My Guest: Dr. David Middaugh is a specialist physical therapist who helps people avoid unnecessary surgery while getting back to being healthy, active, and mobile. He coaches people online and has a clinic where people are treated in person. His contrarian treatment approaches are focused on addressing the root cause of problems like arthritis and tendon tears so that people have the most control over their health. Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:10:58] What makes you different from other physical therapists? [00:14:12] Is it actually possible to heal osteoarthritis without surgery? [00:20:28] What is unique about how you help people with knee pain? [00:37:30] What about people with shoulder pain?   What is Manual Physical Therapy? Hands-on body work to manipulate the soft tissues like your muscles, tendons, ligaments tend to be pretty good at moving the joints. Fixing the root problem of knee and shoulder pain issues through movement. Focused on fascia techniques and fascia related treatments.   What Really Works to Save Your Knees and Shoulders?   Knees What to work on? Glutes. If you have weakness in the glutes, that's when the quads get over dominant. The Science: Quads have been overused causing knee arthritis or meniscus tear. What to do? Do your exercises primarily with your glutes. Your hamstrings and quads will still work – they just need to work secondary. Can you figure out how to make your glutes contract apart from your thigh muscles? It's more gaining mental control over your muscles. Stop walking. Turn on your glutes first.   Shoulders  What to work on? Upper traps (trapezius). If you have weak traps, there is more stress and tension holding the weight of the arm, shoulders and maybe chest.. The Science: Rotator Cuff tears are one of the biggest problems because of weak upper traps. What to do? Shrug every time you reach up to use your traps. This preserves your ball and socket joint. If you don't shrug, the socket faces outwards and compresses tissues.   Connect with Dr. David: Get the Manual Therapy for a 50% discount for a one-time purchase OR the first payment on membership Link: http://flippingfifty.com/manualtherapy Code: FLIPPING50 Instagram - @elpasomanualpt YouTube - @epmanualphysicaltherapy   Other Episodes You Might Like: Previous Episode - Clean Eating, Fasting and Eating Disorders in Menopause Next Episode - Stress Isn't All Bad? In this special episode of The Common Sense MD, Dr. Tom Rogers brings listeners right into the exam room for a real-time demonstration of a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) knee injection. Joined by Jill Henritze, PA-C, Dr. Rogers discusses his personal journey with knee joint pain and the benefits he's experienced from PRP therapy—especially for aging, active adults. Go behind the scenes as Jill Henritze, PA-C ,who has over 20 years of orthopedic and injection experience, walks through each step of the procedure, including what to expect, potential side effects, and why PRP is a promising alternative to cortisone and other treatments for large joints. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows!   This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track!   Check out today's questions:     Kellie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I have been with your program for almost 6 months now. I have completed the Vit-Tox tests and have gone through the FM Detox twice and now going through the CBO Protocol. I just turned 38 years old and I feel like my joints are of an 80 year old. I have played soccer since age 5 and still play on a competitive coed league to this day. I have played many other team/contact sports in the past. I have had past ankle, knee, and hip injuries due to sports and I do see possible knee and hip replacements in my future. When I do my daily workouts or go up/down stairs my ankles, knees, hips, and back crack or pop so easily and so much. I don't see glucosamine chondroitin as a supplement in your shop. Are there any suggestions you may have to keep my joints healthier? Thank you!!              Jon: Hey Dr Cabral, looking for advice and i feel like there's a population that struggles with this same topic. My Dr is recommending a statin due to my high LDL-C of 230. My LDL has gone up after cleaning up my diet in the last 7 months however ALL of my markers tested for have improved. Triglycerides have gone from over 200 to 100, HDL is up to 60, VLDL has dropped from 30 to 15, A1C is 5.2, blood pressure is normal for the first time ever, and so onr. My personal opinion is that i'm healthier than ever and i can't imagine having to go on what seems like a lifetime drug due to one marker being off and i don't buy the story that LDL alone is a concern for me. Curious on your opinion here and if you think i have something to worry about. Thanks!!                                                                                                                            Annette: I've been diagnosed with nephrocalcinosis by conventional doctors who say the cause is genetic. I have adjusted my diet to low sodium, low oxalate foods. The doctors say my next step is to try to get on the kidney transplant list before I need dialysis. I take potassium citrate and a calcitriol. Is there anything I can do to improve my kidney function?                                                                                                  Summer: Hi Dr. Cabral! I heard you say that it's best to replace aluminum cookware, but not necessary, and instead to use parchment paper as a barrier. Doesn't the aluminum off gas when heated? How does parchment paper prevent the aluminum from getting into the food? Thanks! By the way, to all my fellow listeners: please contact your state representatives and let them know you do not consent to geo-engineering in your skies. Several states have now banned it. We could all live healthier lives if we could work toward eliminating toxins and heavy metals including aluminum that are regularly being sprayed into our air.                                                                                                                                                Ann: Thank you Dr Cabral- you are changing SO many lives - thank you for all of your wisdom and teachings:) I have a question about Magnesium. My cortisol was high at my last lab test, and I took Full Spectrum magnesium for 12 weeks, and now I take Cal Mag daily. I also understand that I can take Calming Magnesium and CBD at night to help with sleep.I don't want to take too much for too long for my body, but I still think I need the help for my cortisol levels/ sleep. What combination of the above do you recommend? Is there a length of time that is too long to be on Full Spectrum Magnesium? PS. I do the 3-2-1 protocol, take Adrenal Soothe and will be repeating my big 5 this fall. For most of the second half of 20th century, the Supreme Court has wrestled with finding a balance between the Free Exercise of religion and the Establishment Clause, offering several tests to test the limits of permissible accommodation without the undue appearance of government endorsement. Among those tests has been a little-thing called the “play in the joints,” famously introduced in Walz v. Tax Commissioner of New York (1970). In this episode, I explore this concept with Falco Anthony Muscante II, whose paper in the Ave Marie Law Review is called “Play in the Joints” Among the Religion Clauses: Rebuilding the Strong Joints the Framers Formed. In our conversation, we discuss the history of the religious clause and what the framers intended, how the concept emerged and became weaponized in Locke v. Davey (2003), why the Court has latched on to the idea of state neutrality and how that impacts religion, and more. Falco Anthony Muscante II earned his J.D. in 2023 from the Duquesne University School of Law, where he served on the executive boards for the Law Review and Appellate Moot Court Board. He is an alumnus of Grove City College, where he graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. Management, minor in Pre-Law, and concentration in Human Resources. Falco is a litigation associate at a big law firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, soon headed to clerk for the Third Circuit. Cross & Gavel is a production of CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY. There is lots of discussion in the media about bone health and in this first episode biomechanist Katy Bowman and biologist Jeannette Loram place bone tissue health into a wider context; what really matters is how well the entire skeleton is working—as a system—to support our bodies and our movement. Katy and Jeannette explain how the status of the bone in different parts of your skeleton is a record of the movement you have—and have not done—in the past. They outline Wolff's law, the idea that bone adapts and changes according to the stress and load it experiences throughout a lifetime. They bring this concept to life using examples from populations with distinct movement and bone loading histories ranging from ancient human archers and farmers, through different sporting populations to astronauts. Books Mentioned:Move Your DNA by Katy BowmanOrbital by Samantha Harvey Rethink Your Position by Katy Bowman Research Mentioned: Neolithic Women, Manual Labour and Bone  Cycling and Bone HealthMultidirectional Sport and Running: bone strength  Made Possible by Our Dynamic Collective of Wonderful Sponsors:Smart Playrooms, design and products to keep you and your kids engaged and active at home, take 10% off monkey bars, rock wall panels and holds with code DNA10; Earth Runners, minimalist sandals that mimic being truly barefoot through their grounding technology, take 10% off with code DNA10;  Peluva, Five-toe minimalist sports shoes ideal for higher impact activities, take 15% off with code NUTRITIOUSMOVEMENT; Ikaria Design, creators of the Soul Seat®, a height adjustable chair that allows you to sit in diverse shapes including cross-legged, take 10% of new inventory with code DNA10; Sweet Skins, beautiful organic hemp and cotton clothing that is stylish, flexible and designed to move with you, take 15% off with code DNA15 and Venn Design, beautiful floor cushions and ball seats that keep you moving at home or at the office; Thoughts/questions email us at podcast@nutritiousmovement.comYour Voice on the Podcast: Read The Credits

Can joint replacements reduce pain, help you move more - and live longer? In this week's podcast episode, we explore the untold benefits of hip and knee replacements beyond pain relief. Dr Tim Lindsay, clinician and researcher at Imperial College London, joins us to share insights from large-scale studies that show how joint replacement can restore physical activity levels and potentially reduce premature mortality. We also discuss why recovery takes time, how expectations should be managed, and what patients can realistically achieve after surgery. If you're considering joint replacement or supporting someone who is, this conversation offers evidence-based clarity and hope.RESOURCESARTICLESDevice-Measured Physical Activity in 3506 Individuals with Knee or Hip Arthroplasty: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38109175Wearable device measured physical activity and future health risk: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-1012-3 CONNECT WITH USTwitter: @ProfDavidHunter @jointactionorgInstagram: @osteoarthritisresearchgroupEmail: osteoarthritis.research@sydney.edu.auWebsite: www.jointaction.info/podcast Hosted on Acast. They discuss how Katy's message has sometimes been reduced to exercise is ‘bad' and natural movement is ‘better'.Katy explains that this has never been her position; rather her aim has been to challenge the assumption that the only way to move our bodies is through exercise. Her work has been to expand our framework of human movement and provide a broader understanding of the shapes and volumes of movement required for human health. Katy and Jeannette also address issues raised in the listener's letter about gym culture and sports, noting that many of the negatives are perceived rather than actual or are to do with commercialization. They discuss the ubiquity of team sports across human cultures and the many positives that sport can provide, including natural movements—like throwing and catching—that are hard to get elsewhere in life.  Also in this episode Katy interviews Anna Yona, co-founder of the barefoot shoe company Wildling. Anna shares the origin story of Wildling and their expansion from children's shoes into the adult market. Katy and Anna talk about favourite customer stories, teenage shoe choices and Wildling's most recent venture—a rain boot—filling a much needed niche in the minimal shoe market. They emphasize the importance of higher load activities performed with very mindful attention to exercise form. They caution that smaller and slower movements are key whatever the exercise modality. Also in this episode, Katy has a conversation with Sohail Shariff of Movemate, creator of segmented active standing boards designed to be used while you work. Sohail explains the personal stories behind the product and its design. Katy shares her appreciation of the boards particularly how  these boards foster dynamic movement of the foot and ankle, something missing with traditional balance boards. Sohail and Katy also discuss the board's segmented design; the multiple articulations create a flowing but stable motion which means Katy can move and focus on work at the same time. Finally they discuss the value of the board in the therapeutic space particularly for those with a need for movement that soothes the nervous system. Books Mentioned:Yoga for Bendy People: Optimizing the Benefits of Yoga for Hypermobility by Libby Hinsley I Know I Should Exercise, But... by Diana Hill & Katy Bowman Made Possible by Our Dynamic Collective of Wonderful Sponsors:Smart Playrooms, design and products to keep you and your kids engaged and active at home; Movemate, dynamic active standing boards that invite movement and play into your workday, without disrupting your workflow; Correct Toes, soft silicone toe spacers that can be worn barefoot or in shoes; Peluva Five-toe minimalist sports shoes ideal for higher impact activities; Venn Design, beautiful floor cushions and ball seats that keep you moving at home or at the office and Wildling, minimal footwear for toddlers, kids and adults made from natural materials.  Thoughts/questions email us at podcast@nutritiousmovement.comYour Voice on the Podcast: Read The Credits
