RJJ Software's Software Development Service This episode of The Modern .NET Show is supported, in part, by RJJ Software's Podcasting Services, whether your company is looking to elevate its UK operations or reshape its US strategy, we can provide tailored solutions that exceed expectations. Show Notes "I don't want to go into the details right now, but for the listeners, I will say that we are right in the middle of an explosive situation right now with some WordPress drama. WordPress and WP Engine are experiencing a lot of the fallout, kind of related to what we talked about in the last episode, where you start out with some good intentions and then you get in a situation where both sides kind of feel burned. And I'm not going to say that there's a perfect solution out there, But I do think that this frequent check-ins and asking, you know, "is this good for me and what needs to change for this to be good for my life?" is important."— Scott Harden Welcome friends to The Modern .NET Show; the premier .NET podcast, focusing entirely on the knowledge, tools, and frameworks that all .NET developers should have in their toolbox. We are the go-to podcast for .NET developers worldwide, and I am not your host: Jamie. I'm Delilah and I will be recording the intro for this episode because Jamie is suffering with a throat infection. In this episode, Scott Harden joined us to talk more about open-source, software licensing, and a little on some of the most recent NuGet package updates that .NET developers should know about. It's important to note, Scott and Jamie talked about the WordPress controversy which was still unfolding as we recorded (which on October 19th, 2024). They brought it up not to make fun of WordPress or to add fuel to the flames, but to talk about the fact that it highlighted Scott's point about checking in with yourself regularly, as an open-source developer, about whether you're getting what you want from your public repos. Whilst talking about open-source development and licensing, Scott brought up a question on our collective and individual digital legacies. "And this is kind of a startling topic to bring up, but what if you just disappeared tomorrow? Because people just leave because they have some medical situation or some life situation, or they die. And this happens. This happens in software. We'll talk about some specific examples in a minute. But, you know, if you disappear tomorrow, it's interesting to think about kind of what your digital legacy would be. And, you know, you could have left this thing behind in a way that it could have been used by everyone or anyone."— Scott Harden This episode has a lot of resources in the accompanying show notes, so if you're listening along in a podcast player make sure to head to the website (there'll be a link). That way you don't miss out on all the wonderful things Scott and Jamie talked about. As a form of trigger warning, at around the 58 minute mark Scott talks about how his own journey with cancer brought the idea of his digital legacy to the forefront for him. Both Scott and Jamie also talk about the late Abel Wang and Pieter Hintjens. And they talk about other examples of developers who are very public with their health struggles: Jeremy Likness and (previous guest of the show) Jon Smith, who suffer with Alzheimer's disease and dementia respectively. We understand completely if you want to skip this entire section. But we also feel that there are very important points raised whilst talking about these, less cheery, matters. This conversation makes up the bulk for the final 10-15 minutes of the episode. Aside from a teaser for the next part (which is all about NuGet packages), you won't miss anything .NET specific if you choose to skip this part. Anyway, without further ado, let's sit back, open up a terminal, type in `dotnet new podcast` and we'll dive into the core of Modern .NET. Join my BFAM Chris Kline aka Dudley and I as we share war stories from back in the day, including “Black Wednesday” in 1983, summers “dragging hose” the late ‘80's, backpacking through Europe in late 1990, discovering “The Meadows” in the early ‘90's, and recapping a few of the countless laughs we had along the way. In this week's episode, I am thrilled to welcome Mike Coy to the podcast who joins me from Chattanooga, TN, United States. Mike Coy grew up on the baseball field. From his early days of playing in Beaumont, Texas, to a long history of coaching, he has always been drawn back to the game. His dad was an umpire and coach that helped every kid in town with their game. Baseball is in his blood. And with good reason — his teams are winners! After playing in college, Mike moved into the TX/LA Professional Baseball League where he hit .556 for a magical season in 1977, won the league championship, was named MVP and Offensive Player of the Year two years in a row, and won a contract offer with the New York Mets baseball team. Since then, he has gone on to coach Little League, Senior League, Big League and Select Baseball. Today, at 60+ years old, Mike is still playing and dominating Men's Senior Baseball League with seven (7!) World Championship Rings!Fueled by his father's poignant words, "make a difference," Mike transformed a harrowing battle with cancer into an incredible journey of triumph. As a sought-after keynote speaker and best-selling author of "I Chose…Live: There's No Cheating Cancer, And We All Have a Choice To Make," a testament to overcoming adversity and making life-changing choices. With a powerful mantra, "Winners find a way to win. Losers only find excuses why they fail," Mike inspires profound shifts in perspective and action, motivating individuals to embrace purpose and resilience. Mike's story encompasses not just a battle against cancer but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His strength lies in his ability to motivate others to find purpose, conquer adversity, and live each day with gratitude and determination.Mike also has a stellar career as a Registered Financial Consultant. It has been my pleasure to have Mike join me, and I know, my listeners, that you will enjoy the episode. Hosting my two guests on Episode 7 of GD&F was a HUGE treat for me, and those guests are brothers, Brendan and Billy Ryan. I grew up only a pitching wedge away from the Ryan family and have known them my entire life. I admire Brendan & Billy on many levels, but mostly because they are simply amazing human beings. The musical talents that they explore in the band they formed with Bill Campion, PJ O'Connor, Mark Wike, and Clive___ in the late 80's called The Bogmen are simply a bonus. The sound of a Bogmen show is full of “heavy rhythms, bouncy, distorted guitar riffs, analog synths, and belting vocals” and their concerts have been described as “a religious experience”. We delve into how the band was signed to Arista in the 90's and disbanded shortly thereafter to explore their solo careers. They recount how the band reconnected again following 9/11, when Brendan's lost his wife in the World Trade Center, disbanded a second time, and then reunited again in 2020 following the sudden death of one of their closest friends, fellow Huntington native Greg Kline. We explore the making of their latest album, In My Kingdom, and peek at what's ahead for the brothers. Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!Links: www.thebogmen.com www.ryanbrosmusic.com http://www.instagram.com/thebogmen?igsh=bTR3aDU4b2Z4ZG52

He recounts his inspiring, emotional journey of rebuilding his company following a devastating personal tragedy. Jerry is currently the CEO of his REI company, although he is no longer operationally involved with the company as a whole. His firm does a tremendous volume of wholesale deals, which are done Virtually. Jerry currently mentors and coaches real estate investors about the REI business. He demonstrates how to improve their acquisition skills while instructing them on how to construct and scale their businesses. “I've got to take responsibility for the part I control” Anyone can diagnose the obvious. Life is not that black and white. We are complex. Life is complex. We would all be better served being empathetic not because it makes you a benevolent human but because nuance is a difficult input for which to account. Jenny's book and her experiences bring value to those of us working at this thing we call Life. So keep working at it and involve people in this process— each in their proper role.

"Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying"The Reboot...again! Are Ben's hopes for this podcast shitty pipe dreams? The good fight continues! You'll be surprised to hear the correct pronunciation of Zihuatanejo caused one or two issues.Topics crammed into the episode before The Sisters 'would let us be' include: Fiona nails our new intro Fiona blames her incompetence on dyslexia.Do you want to be Ben's mate? Ben can't contain his excitement for the Reboot any longer. Do people get us? Fiona can't help herself and continues to goof around with offensive impressions. Does Fiona see Ben's point? He had to cut most of it out, so probably not. Has every segment/show idea been done to death? For example...Take an arbitrary number of trivia and call it a show. Done! Fiona ruins yet another segment with her limited vocabulary skills. Ben forgets his recording pillow, so he hops in the fridge instead. Fiona droning on about Stephen King and Frank Darabont wrecks Ben's stomach. Idea for new original show/segment...Let's get tiddly and tell everyone about what we're drinking this week! Shots! How many bullets can you fit in a 6-round cylinder Colt Detective Special? What did Bill Clinton think of the inmates of Shawshank? An Amazon drop-off leads to some self-promotion from The Waffler. Some days I got bummed; some days, I didn't - the life of an indie podcaster...Random fact: Shawshank Prison is the second most famous on-screen prison behind Wentworth Prison. Morgan Freeman's narration makes Ben go weak at the knees. And erect. How many nits can we pick?
