*** THIS EPISODE CONTAINS REFERENCES TO SELF-HARM AND SUICIDE. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN LISTENING ***Imagine being stuck in a never-ending nightmare, with no hope of escape. Every day, the same routine: confined to a tiny cell, with nothing to do but stare at the walls. No end in sight, no light at the end of the tunnel. This has been the reality for thousands of prisoners in the UK, trapped in the Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence. When the IPP sentence was introduced in the early 2000s, it seemed like a perfect solution to keep dangerous offenders off the streets for longer periods of time. But it would quickly become an unjust nightmare for many prisoners and their families, as they were caught up in a system that seemed to have no way out. What exactly was the IPP system, and how did it come to be? What impact has it had on prisoners and their families, and how did it change the landscape of the UK prison system?Join my Facebook group for some great giveaways, discuss case theories and take part in polls for future episodes. Friday, the 23rd of February 1968, was a cold, frost covered morning, when 67 year old Maurice Goodman, known as Morris, happened upon a figure lying on the ground on Carmichael Lane, in front of some lockup garages, not too far from Langside Place in Glasgow, Scotland. But a sight like that wasn't too uncommon after ballroom nights. Maybe someone had had a bit too much to drink, and passed out outside. But as Maurice stepped closer, intending to wake the person, he realised that this was not the case.Maurice stood there, looking at the naked and terribly pale body of a young woman lying on her back. He nudged the body with his foot, and it was then, that he realised the woman had passed away.Recoiling in horror, Maurice ran back home to Carmichael Place to call the police. There was no way for Maurice to know it at the time, but he had initiated the investigation that would grow to be one of the biggest and most frustrating in Scotland's history…Join my Facebook group for some great giveaways, discuss case theories and take part in polls for future episodes. *** Warning! This episodes contains details of sexual abuse against children, as well as descriptions of violence. Please take care when listening***There is an expectation that the criminal justice system is there to protect society and to punish offenders for the crimes they have committed. But what about when their crimes are so horrendous, so damaging, and so perverse, that you can barely stand to hear about them. Is a term of imprisonment really enough? Does the safety offered by concrete walls, and three-square meals a day protect society, or does it shield the offender from those who feel like they deserve a taste of their own medicine? In today's episode, we cover the life and crimes of Richard Huckle, one of the UKs worst known child sex offenders. But Richard's story doesn't belong only to him. It is also the tale of Paul Fitzgerald - a man whose name might never have been known, had he not served up his own form of jailhouse justice. How wrong I was.” These are the haunting words of Angela Smith, the grandmother of Lacey, and John Paul Bennet, and mother of Terri Harris, three of the victims in today's harrowing case. On the 19th of September 2021, police would receive not one, but two calls, which would bring to light a series of events that would shock the UK. This is the story, of the Killamarsh Murders. At exactly 7.26 that morning, the police received a call from a mother, expressing concern for her adult son's safety. She told the operator that her son had told her he was suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds, and she requested that police perform a wellness check. Minutes later, at exactly 7.38 am, the police received another call. The man on the line stated, in what was reported as an unusually nonchalant manner, “I just need to report a crime, basically I need the police and an ambulance now because I've just killed four people.” When the man identified himself and his address, the operator was able to link the two separate calls, both of which told very different stories. The man identified himself as Damien Bendall. Join my Facebook group for some great giveaways, discuss case theories and take part in polls for future episodes. But what if these laws, and regulations, suddenly contradict their purpose, and work in favour of the offender? Anyone can assume that based on a lack of evidence or proof of their innocence that an accused person is not guilty. But what if that same person eventually confesses to the crime - You'd naturally assume that the criminal would be charged, and sentenced appropriately right? But in the case of Julie Hogg, who was murdered in 1989, her killer was able to retain his freedom, despite admitting what he had done. The horrible reason behind this, is a law introduced in the 12th century – that of double jeopardy. Julie's parents took up the fight for justice in the name of their loving daughter. Her mother stated, “I will never ever give up… never. To my dying day and as long as I am drawing breath, and as long as there is someone to listen, I will keep on going”. Eventually, it would take more than 15 years to change the “double jeopardy” law. But was it too late for their daughter's killer? He was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil which is a small borough that lies to the north of Cardiff in Wales. Ian was a content and happy child who loved the outdoors and his family. He was intelligent and sociable and made friends easily. As Ian reached his middle school years he developed a passion for music. No matter the instrument Ian would figure out how to play it. His bright and inquisitive mind meant he enjoyed the thrill of learning something new and it didn't take long for his family to realise he had a real talent for entertainment through his musical passions. When Ian started attending Hawthorn High School and became more independent with his music tastes he was drawn to rock and metal music and began to listen to artists like Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Megadeth. It was during this time that Ian met Mike Lewis who would become a lifelong friend. The two had a mutual passion for both listening to and playing metal music. In 1991 the pair decided to form their own rock band which they called Aftermath. The genre of music they played together was known as thrash metal and the pair would spend every spare moment in Ian's back garden writing or playing their own music. Whilst his parents didn't understand the genre they encouraged his musical talents and supported his passions. In 2009 he decided to branch out on his own in a side venture. He started a project he called "L'Amour La Morgue". "L'Amour La Morgue" was much more about music production than musical performance. The 17 tracks he released under this moniker were comprised of remixes of popular songs from a broad range of genres such as Beyonce, the Killers, Tears for Fears, Bring me the Horizon and Young Guns. In 2010 the Lostprophets released yet another album, this time titled The Betrayed. Given their huge success, they were now attracting requests for collaborations from some of music's biggest names. Yet again the album was hugely successful and the band set off on another worldwide tour. Just two years later, in 2012 they released their fifth album called Weapons. It was whilst they were touring to promote The Betrayed album that the image Ian had been presenting to the world began to fracture...NSPCCIf you're worried about a child, even if you're unsure, contact our professional counsellors for help, advice and supportCall – 0808 800 5000 Email help@nspcc.org.ukSAMARITANSIf you need someone to talk to, Samaritans won't judge you or tell you what to do – They listen! **This Episode contains descriptions of a graphic nature, including the death of a child. Listener discretion is advised**With the funeral behind them and the trial not yet underway, Denise and Ralph began to cope with James's loss in different ways. While Denise went inside herself and closed off to the world, Ralph sought comfort at the bottom of a bottle. They spent less and less time together. What had held them together was James; without him, they were islands - completely consumed by their grief and unable to find a way back to each other. And yet, one month after James's murder and just days after what would have been his third birthday, a light appeared amidst the darkness. Denise found out she was pregnant. Denise recalls that finding out she was pregnant literally saved her life. Without the burgeoning life growing within her she had no hope, no direction and nothing to live for. That is not to say her pregnancy was plain sailing or filled with joy. Remember this is a mother who had lost one child to stillbirth and another to murder. When she gave birth to this child, all going well, she would be a mother of three with only one child in her arms. Imagine the conflict of feeling both joy at the kick of your unborn child and guilt for experiencing happiness when your other child has been taken from you so brutally. Guilt had become a constant companion to Denise. Just one moment she had taken her eyes off James and her hand out of his. Just moments stood between him walking out of the butchery and her racing outside to find him. The deep mental and emotional fears about losing another child would be more than most of us could handle. But for Denise and Ralph, they also had the upcoming trial to contend with. The shocking nature of James' murder made headlines around the world at the time, so it is a well-known case. What had begun as a relatively normal day in Kirkby, England, would end with a missing two-year-old. It is a case which continues to shock Great Britain and indeed the world. The morning after James went missing, Ralph and Denise returned to the police station for an update on the search for their little boy. Neither of them had slept, rather, they had sat numbly on the couch at Denise's mother's home, where family members attempted to offer comfort and hope. The previous evening, they had identified James in a single frame of CCTV footage from inside the mall, which showed him walking out of the butchery alone. Another shot taken moments later, showed Denise racing from the store when she realised he had gone. Those shots were taken at 3.39 pm and 3.40 pm. By the next morning, the police had more images to share. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd love you to share your feedback with me by leaving a review for the show. Dad, Ralph had his breakfast as usual while Mum, Denise attempted to feed their son James. James was always a smiley and cheeky boy and breakfasts could be a challenge, while he chattered away indiscernibly about whatever took his fancy that day. But without fail James would be having Frosties, they were his favourite cereal. While most of the Frosties ended up on the floor, it was a delight to watch him attempt to prove his independence by feeding himself. Ralph finished his breakfast and Denise got James ready for the short walk around the corner to her mother's house, James's nana Eileen. Ralph was heading over to his brother in laws home that day to help with a project, while Denise and James would be running errands with her sister-in-law and niece. But what was supposed to be a simple day of chores and projects with family would become the day the Bulger's lives as they knew them ended. By that evening their precious two-year-old boy would be missing without a trace in circumstances which would come to shock the nation and indeed the world. As the rain beat down on the dormant, darkened road in the Welsh Valleys, the officers were greeted by the sight of a silver Peugeot 306, abandoned near trees on the side of the carriageway. It doesn't appear there are any other vehicles involved in the incident, and there is no sign of the driver. The police are baffled… Until they learn that 2 undertakers stopped at the scene, just moments after the collision occurred and witnessed the driver of the Peugeot exit the vehicle. They even indulged in a brief conversation with him, before leaving him at the scene and going on their way. As police tried to make sense of the situation, they attended the address of the registered keeper of the vehicle, Mr. Alan Vaughan. Likely believing he had been drinking, they informed him he was under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident. Alan was confused. He knew hadn't left his home all day, and the vehicles he owned were all accounted for at his home address. When police gave Alan a description of the vehicle in question, the penny finally dropped... It was the car that Alan and his wife Mary had bought for their son, Kyle. So where was he?If you have any information relating to Kyle's disappearance, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be, please contact Gwent Police at 101 and quote the log number 397. **This Episode contains descriptions of a graphic nature. Listener discretion is advised**On December 23, 1959, at 7:44 PM, police in Birmingham were dispatched to the YWCA hostel in Edgbaston after a report from a frightened woman. 21-year-old Margaret Brown, explained to the officers she had been ironing in the utility room, when she suddenly felt a draught. Upon investigating, Margaret discovered the door in the next room, that led outside to the yard was open. Strange, but the young woman didn't think too much of it. Probably, the wind was to blame. So Margaret closed the door and returned to her chores—only to hear the outside door opening again shortly after. This time, someone had also switched off the lights. Confused, Margaret got closer to the glass-paned door. It was then that she noticed a dark figure of a man in the shadow. Before Margaret had time to ask the stranger what he was doing, the man charged at her and hit her on the head with something heavy. Fortunately, the blow was not strong enough to knock Margaret unconscious, and she was able to let out a bloodcurdling scream. That was enough to scare her attacker, who turned around and ran away. When the police began their search at the YWCA hostel minutes later, it was quickly realised Margaret Brown had been incredibly lucky to survive the encounter with the unknown man—another young woman did not.Look out for my Christmas message in the next few days. She had been on the force just a few short months when she was paired with Fiona who was tasked with showing her the ropes. Fiona Bone was thirty-two years old and a kind and caring woman who was dedicated to her job and her family. She was engaged to be married and often spoke with her fellow officers about how excited she was to be planning her wedding.Nicola and Fiona were dispatched to respond to an address in Abbey Garden in the village of Longendale, after a caller reported a possible burglary. The address was only a few minutes from their location, so they drove their police-issued Volkswagen van and parked outside the front of the home. When they arrived at the quiet cul-de-sac there was no sign of anything untoward and so they exited the van and walked towards the gate bordering the front garden.Breaking through the stillness they heard a voice yell POLICE POLICE! A split-second later, shots rang out from the home. Bullets flew toward Fiona and Nicola and with no time to react they both took rounds to the chest, with only their stab vests to protect them. In the seconds following the shots, they ran in opposite directions in a desperate attempt to dodge the gunfire raining down upon them. NOVEMBER COMPETITION LINK! After picking up two of his colleagues, he headed into the lifting darkness. But there was nothing usual about the horrific discovery he would make, on an otherwise peaceful morning. At 6.10am, his headlights silhouetted the hunched-over figure of a woman standing by the roadside. As Barry inched closer, he noticed the woman's head was bare of any hair and her skin appeared blackened and charred. Barry pulled over and the three men jumped out of the car, knowing instinctively the woman needed help. As they drew towards her the smell of burning human flesh became overwhelming. It was very clear that this was no woman, she appeared to be just a girl, no older than eighteen. It was also clear that she needed medical attention immediately. For credits, Transcripts & Photo's relating to today's episode, please visit WWW.TRUECRIMEBRITAIN.COM/EPISODESExclusive access to ad – free, early release & bonus episodes, plus even more great rewards, please visit: WWW.PATREON.COM/TRUECRIMEBRITAINGet involved by following the show on social media, you could recommend True Crime Britain to friend, or even give us a shout – out!
