Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!   This is the 112 anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic.  I won't bore you with the story of the Titanic but I do want to give a brief summary of the Titanic story just in case there are some out there that have been living under a rock their whole life- the luxury liner RMS Titanic, launched on May 31, 1911, and set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton en route to New York City on April 10, 1912, with 2,240 passengers and crew on board. On April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, Titanic broke apart and sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking with it the lives of more than 1,500 passengers and crew.  On board were some of the world's richest people, JP Morgan, John Jacob Astor IV, Margaret Brown and Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy's, and his wife, Ida just to name a few.  I will not be telling you about them, instead I wanted to highlight a party of 4 women traveling together in cabins B-3, B-5 and E-10.  These women would survive on lifeboat 2.Resources:https://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Allenhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-allen.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Emilie_Kreuchenhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/emilie-kreuchen.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Elisabeth_Walton_Roberthttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/elisabeth-walton-robert.htmlhttps://titanic.fandom.com/wiki/Georgette_Alexandra_Madillhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-survivor/georgette-madill.htmlhttps://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic/lifeboats/lifeboat-2/All the things: Music: "Electronic Rock (King Around Here)" by Alex Grohl https://pixabay.com/music/search/electronic%20rock%20kingLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media:  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/Festival link: https://truecrimepodcastfestival.com/tickets/Promo Code: BREAKFAST

Today we are talking with the very talented Margaret Brown about her latest documentary, Descendant. On July 9, 1860, more than 100 captive Africans were brought to the shores of Mobile, Alabama, on a ship named the Clotilda, under cover of darkness. The international slave trade had been made illegal in the US in 1808, but human trafficker Timothy Meaher made a bet that he could get around the law with his ship. Today, the residents of Africatown, just north of Mobile, count the Clotilda survivors among their ancestors. The documentary Descendant, brings their stories to light as they grapple with a growing spotlight on their community following the discovery of the sunken Clotilda. The film shows how events that unfolded more than a century ago continue to have lasting repercussions several generations later.Brown produced the film alongside Kyle Martin and Essie Chambers for Participant and Take One Five Entertainment. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it was picked up by Higher Ground Productions and Netflix for theatrical and streaming distribution. The film was shortlisted for the 2023 Academy Awards, and you can watch it now on NETFLIX. The film currently has a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. **This Episode contains descriptions of a graphic nature. Listener discretion is advised**On December 23, 1959, at 7:44 PM, police in Birmingham were dispatched to the YWCA hostel in Edgbaston after a report from a frightened woman. 21-year-old Margaret Brown, explained to the officers she had been ironing in the utility room, when she suddenly felt a draught. Upon investigating, Margaret discovered the door in the next room, that led outside to the yard was open. Strange, but the young woman didn't think too much of it. Probably, the wind was to blame. So Margaret closed the door and returned to her chores—only to hear the outside door opening again shortly after. This time, someone had also switched off the lights. Confused, Margaret got closer to the glass-paned door. It was then that she noticed a dark figure of a man in the shadow. Before Margaret had time to ask the stranger what he was doing, the man charged at her and hit her on the head with something heavy. Fortunately, the blow was not strong enough to knock Margaret unconscious, and she was able to let out a bloodcurdling scream. That was enough to scare her attacker, who turned around and ran away. When the police began their search at the YWCA hostel minutes later, it was quickly realised Margaret Brown had been incredibly lucky to survive the encounter with the unknown man—another young woman did not.Look out for my Christmas message in the next few days. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary “Descendant" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director and producer Margaret Brown. The Clotilda was the last known ship to arrive in the United States carrying enslaved Africans, decades after slave importation was outlawed. The ship was burned and sank somewhere in the Mobile River, while its passengers would later settle in the community of Africatown.  In the century that followed, the descendants of The Clotilda struggled to preserve their heritage in an Alabama town encircled by industrial property owned by the descendants of the slave owners. As a renewed effort to find the missing wreck gets underway, the community grapples with the implications of its discovery.SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Descendant" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.

Documentary filmmaker Margaret Brown was born and raised in Mobile, Ala., and has had an absorbing interest in the American South, including her 2004 documentary “Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt.” But only while filming “The Order of Myths,” in 2008, she learned of the last known slave ship brought to the United States in the late 1850s, and the nearby community former slaves formed. “I didn't remember learning about that in school. That was the first time I had heard of the Clotilda [ship] or Africatown,” she states. That was the moment when she came across the topic of her newest project, the film “Descendant.” Now, Brown shares how she created partnerships to make the film, and got Questlove, Netflix and the Obamas to become involved in it. But first, Kim Masters banters with Matt Belloni about Warner Bros. Discovery's unpredictable decision to hire filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran to run the DC Universe.

It's not really about the ship. The first thing you have to understand about Margaret Brown's (“The Great Invisible”, “The Order of Myths”) brilliant new Netflix documentary “Descendant” about the Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive with enslaved Africans in the U.S., is that it's not primarily about the search for and discovery of this historic vessel. What carries her complex and lyrical film along in its looping journey across time and place are the stories of the descendants themselves. Lorna Woods, Joycelyn Davis and Emmett Lewis are just a few of the remarkable “treasure keepers” of Africatown, now part of Mobile, Alabama, who, for generations, have shared and protected the stories of their ancestors. But, when, as Margaret documents, the ship is discovered, who is to say where the narrative will go from here? Margaret joined Mike and Ken to discuss how she picked up where she left off from her 2008 film “The Order of Myths”, also set in her hometown of Mobile, to embark on this unique creative journey. How did the work of writer, anthropologist and filmmaker Zora Neale Hurston's inspire Margaret and become, through Hurston's book “Barracoon”, a key narrative device in the film? Why did Margaret turn off the camera in the midst of shooting one of the most powerful moments in the entire film? And why is the issue of zoning, as unsexy as it is, so crucial to understanding the past, present and future of Africatown? As Margaret puts it, “Where I ended the film is not the end of their story…. The story continues”.   Hidden Gem: Last Flight Home   Follow on twitter: @margaretbrown @topdocspod   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

In her latest film DESCENDANT, Award-winning documentary filmmaker Margaret Brown returns to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama to document the search for and historic discovery of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States. DESCENDANT deftly examines more than 160 years of the complicated history, secrecy and speculation surrounding the 2019 discovery of the Clotilda and the seismic impact it has on the descendant community of Africatown. DESCENDANT presents a moving portrait of a community actively grappling with slavery's legacy and fighting to preserve their heritage while examining what justice looks like in a country unwilling to fully acknowledge the evil and trauma wrought by the institutional bondage inflicted upon millions of human beings. Director Margaret Brown (The Order of Myths, The Great Invisible) joins us for a conversation on why she made the decision to go back to her hometown, why the story of the Clotilda still resonates with the residents of Africatown, the importance of Gudjol Lewis, the lasting impact that author Zara Neale Hurston's  Barracoon: The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo' has had in dispelling the racist lies while resurrecting the truth about this incredibly resilient community. I have spent quite a bit of time on this case because I wanted to answer this one simple question, was the torch slayer a serial killer? The basic definition of a Serial Killer is someone who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. Because of how things were handled, you probably never heard of the Torch Slayer, and if you had, you only knew of his one victim. But today, we are taking a deep dive into this crazy story. This story first took place in February of 1928. A woman named Margaret Brown is getting ready to start a new chapter of her life. In this episode I speak with Mike Foster, whose ancestor William Foster captained (and burned) the slave ship. Mike has become a vocal advocate for Africatown and the legacy of the Clotilda; he speaks candidly with me about his relationship to descendants, his own emotional journey in becoming part of this story, and the ways in which Africatown is looking to the future. I am so grateful he gave me this time.Mike's bio: Mike Foster was born in California in 1947, and raised there. He went into the United States Air Force in 1965 and served over 21 years. He has lived in ten states and four foreign countries, including England and Italy. He has kissed the Blarney Stone, been to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and served as a noncombatant tour in Vietnam.  He is a published poet, and enjoys working on his family genealogy. He is married, a father and grandfather, and lives in Montana. And here is his poem:"On Meeting Descendants of the Clotilda-- A white man wrapped in black arms, the end of a 160 year journeyto forgiveness. Surrounded byeight descendants, joy, tears, respect.Told that I am brave in coming here,I say the words they've been achingto hear; “I 'm sorry”. In a great flashof love they become the family I didn't know, until this moment. I am overwhelmedby their acceptance, and  truth, welcomedinto their lives through my name."You can see the 60 Minutes interview we reference here:  https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&ei=UTF-8&p=mike+foster+60+minutes&type=E211US1490G0#id=2&vid=04f2e6628d337b1c0f920625d3920ce9&action=clickThe books we reference:-Zora Neale Hurston's Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo  https://bookshop.org/books/barracoon-the-story-of-the-last-black-cargo/9780062748218-Emma Langdon Roche's The Last Voyage of the Clotilda: https://bookshop.org/books/the-last-voyage-of-the-clotilda-the-true-story-of-the-last-slave-ship-voyage-1914/9781387870080-Sylviane Diouf's Dreams of Africa in Alabama: https://bookshop.org/books/the-last-voyage-of-the-clotilda-the-true-story-of-the-last-slave-ship-voyage-1914/9781387870080-And, of course, Ben Raines' The Last Slave Ship: https://bookshop.org/books/the-last-slave-ship-the-true-story-of-how-clotilda-was-found-her-descendants-and-an-extraordinary-reckoning-9781982136048/9781982136048Support the Clotilda Descendants' Association here: https://theclotildastory.com/And make sure to follow them on Instagram:  httpSupport the show

She runs for public office (and loses!), she takes up acting, and she spends time with her family. Margaret passes away in 1932. This episode has a fun quiz show section - fact vs. fiction! In this part of the podcast, our hosts remind us that Molly Brown is Margaret's fictional double who was created to make better song lyrics and a more exciting story. So much of what we think we know about the real Margaret Brown often gets confused with what writers created for Molly Brown. Can you figure out which legends about Margaret Brown are fact and which are fiction? This episode concludes with our hosts discussing whether or not they think Margaret Brown deserves the title of a holy donor. Listen to our hosts' debate and come to your own conclusion! We return to our Holy Donors series with Margaret Brown and her husband J.J. at a crossroads. The silver crash has made life in Leadville very tough, but Margaret and J.J. have one amazing opportunity that prevents them from losing everything. J.J. is a smart and innovative miner, and he figures out how to mine previously unreachable gold near Leadville. In doing so, J.J. makes a fortune, and Margaret and family become part of Colorado's wealthy elite. Margaret loves being a socialite, but with her newfound fortune, she also loves to give back to her community. She and J.J. feed miners in Leadville, they give gifts to children in the orphanage, and Margaret even helps create the first juvenile justice system in Colorado. Margaret is quite outspoken, and she uses her money and her social status to highlight important social issues and encourages her wealthy friends to donate to necessary causes. Unfortunately, despite their financial good fortune, Margaret and J.J. are not happy in marriage, and the two officially separate. Margaret retains access to the couple's fortune, and she continues to be bold in her efforts to change society for the better. Soon after her separation from J.J., however, Margaret experiences a major life event when she takes a boat ride on the legendary Titanic. Join us next week to hear how Margaret's adventure on the Titanic affects her life and her philanthropy. ---Recommended reading: "Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth" by Kristen Iversen---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.Holy Donors: Bringing you inspiring stories of radical generosity that have changed the world.

Join me as I knock down with gusto some of the long-standing myths about Denver socialite/activist/philanthropist Margaret Brown (decidedly not Molly!), one of Titanic's most famed passengers. Her real life bears very little resemblance to the whiskey-driven rabble-rousing of the musical that bore her name. To help me uncover some truths about this absolute FEMINIST of a woman I'm joined by Director of the Molly Brown House Museum, Andrea Malcomb. Visit the museum's website to learn more about Margaret's life and of course for info on ongoing exhibits (including one on Titanic, running through September 2022): https://mollybrown.orgAnd follow the museum on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mollybrownhouse/To. purchase Kristen Iverson's book about Margaret and support the pod, visit Bookshop here: https://bookshop.org/lists/episodes-miscellanyTo support the pod on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/unsinkablepodSupport the show

"Margaret “Molly” Brown: Unsinkable"This season of Holy Donors features socialite, Titanic survivor, and philanthropist, Margaret “Molly” Brown. Let us be clear from the start, Molly Brown is not so much a nickname as a fictional name, one that worked better in song lyrics in the musical comedy about Margaret Brown's life. Margaret Brown is the real world subject of this season's Holy Donors podcast, and we invite you to join us to learn more about Margaret, her life, and her philanthropic endeavors.Margaret was born in July 1867 in Hannibal, Missouri as Margaret Tobin. She grew up in a large family of poor Irish immigrants in a post-Civil War political climate. The poverty and political struggles of Margaret's childhood likely greatly influenced her future philanthropy. The bulk of this initial episode shares stories of Margaret's young adult years in Leadville, Colorado. Leadville was a popular, prosperous silver mining town when Margaret arrived with dreams of finding and marrying a wealthy man. It was in Leadville that Margaret met her future (not wealthy!) husband, J.J. Brown. Margaret and J.J. had a few happy years as newlyweds in Leadville, but in the early 1890s the price of silver fell dramatically, the silver mines in Leadville closed, and most residents became unemployed. At this point, Margaret and J.J. are on the verge of losing everything, but a rare and unexpected opportunity comes for J.J. Tune in next week to find out if and how Margaret and J.J. find success after the price of silver crashes.---Recommended reading: "Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth" by Kristen Iversen---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.Holy Donors: Bringing you inspiring stories of radical generosity that have changed the world.

Cortney Will takes a deep dive into Descendant, the award-winning documentary that debuted at Sundance Film Festival and revealed the riveting true story of The Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive from Africa in 1860. The people it carried to the U.S. arrived 40 years after the slave trade was outlawed, and they established a community called Africatown. The film follows their descendants, who kept the truth about their ancestors alive through oral history passed down generations, truths that have finally been legitimized since the ship’s wreckage was discovered in 2018. Director, Margaret Brown takes us along on her journey for truth and historian Dr. Kern Jackson offers his take on the implications of this monumental discovery and decades-long cover up, and the role Zora Neale Hurston played in this true story that’s stranger than fiction. This second installment  turns partly into an exploration of some of the real passengers aboard the ship and their portrayals in James Cameron's film--Thomas Andrews, Margaret Brown, Archibald Gracie. I also discuss, with quite a bit of detail, how Cameron and his crew seamlessly constructed the ship and the sinking from a combination of practical, digital, and hybrid shots. Toss in a little bit of set gossip and me (of course, who is shocked) defending the finished product against those who doubt its accuracy!
