IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. In the final episode of the 1917 series, Alan Woods discusses the October Revolution, when the workers and peasants of Russia seized power. Alan looks at the build up to the insurrection, which took place exactly 106 years ago on 7th November (25th October, old calendar), and explains the historic significance of the Bolshevik revolution.

IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. In part five, Alan Woods discusses the failed coup attempt by General Kornilov and the impact this had on the political consciousness of the masses. Following the events of the "July Days" in 1917, the Bolsheviks were driven underground and the forces of reaction were emboldened. Nevertheless, the terrible conditions facing the workers, peasants, and soldiers meant that the radical mood amongst the masses did not go away. This process culminated in the reactionary forces coalescing around General Kornilov, who attempt to march on Petrograd and crush the revolutionary movement in its entirety. But, with the Bolsheviks taking a leading role, the organised working class was able to defend the city against Kornilov's coup. As a result, Lenin and Bolshevik Party won the support of the vast majority of the workers and soldiers, preparing the way for the October Revolution.

IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. In part four, Alan discusses the counter-revolution that reared its head in the July Days. Terrified by the outbreak of mass, armed demonstrations with the slogan "All Power to the Soviets", the Provisional Government suppressed the leaders of the Revolution. The Bolshevik offices and printing press were shut down, with Lenin driven into hiding. These events marked a turning point in the revolution. From this moment on, dual power had ended. Only two options remained: either the forces of reaction would crush the revolution, or the Bolsheviks would lead the masses to take power.

IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. In part three, Alan investigates the June Days. Lenin understood that despite the initial popularity of the Provisional Government, the bourgeois coalition would be unable and unwilling to meet the demands of the peasantry and proletariat of peace, land, and bread. As the temperature among the masses rose, the Bolsheviks; the only party to oppose the Provisional Government on the left; would go on to sink deep roots in the soldiery and working class.

IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. Alan continues into part two of this series by discussing Lenin's April Theses, in which he sought to theoretically rearm the Bolshevik leaders who were in danger of taking an opportunist route following the February revolution.

IMTV radio - Marxist ideas. Fighting for revolution.

We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. To begin this series, Alan examines the events of the February Revolution, when the masses entered onto the scene of history to overthrow the hated Tsarist monarchy. In the space of days, a seemingly omnipotent regime was swept aside, and the workers and peasants of Russia began to form their own democratic organs in the shape of the soviets.

This week on Highways Voices we hear from founder Alan Wood, who explains how it's “Santa's naughty list, but for cars,” identifying vehicles sought for non-payment of parking tickets and linking them to other offences such as no MOT, insurance or vehicle excise duty.“I guess it's nearly 15 years of what my partner described as mild curiosity that led to an unhealthy hobby,” Mr Wood explains. “It started with me as an enforcement agent travelling residential streets with automatic number plate recognition, looking for vehicles with unpaid warrants for parking offences, and it's only when doing that over a period of time finding vehicles with 20, 40, 50 or 100 warrants, it dawned on me that this was probably a behavioural flag for other things.”It turned out to be, with him estimating that more than ten million vehicles are not complying with some sort of motoring law. Furthermore, legislation is not keeping up, so while the Police are able to prosecute offenders, they can be seen as not having the time or inclination, while local authorities do not have the powers.“We've really started the push towards government for this situation to be corrected with new legislation,” he says, “Government needs to be ready for that, because I'm coming for them – I'm amassing my army of supporters.”Although some of what Mr Wood says may annoy you because he reveals how many people are getting away with not paying their way, he may inspire you with a solution. Find out what you think on this week's Highways Voices!

After a nice, long run, or really any run for that matter, many runners like to reward themselves with a well deserved donut or their favorite post-run drink. While some may head for the beer fridge, there really aren’t enough electrolytes in their favorite pint to help their body recover. In July 2020, three friends came together to solve that issue by launching a functional beer that is also rich in electrolytes. I know our listeners will recognize the name Rally beer, so we’ve invited the co-founders, Alan Wood, Spencer Sgro, and Michael Mavianto share their experience launching the brand. Rally was founded with an adventurous spirit and a firm belief in being better by doing better; a mission that is not only seen in their products, but also in the work they do to promote health, community, and minimizing the impact on the environment. Craft beer is forever changing and morphing with the times, and one of the newest trends in the game is functional beer. While this segment took hold in the US quite fast, it's been a slow uptake in Canada - until now. Enter Rally Beer Co. Co-Founders Alan Wood and Spencer Sgro kicked off their new venture mid-pandemic in 2020, and they're truly bringing something different and super unique to Ontario craft beer. We hung out for a great chat about the whole functional beer segment (a term they don't specifically use to describe their products), what separates their beers from other brews that utilize similar ingredients (salt, berries, adjuncts with high levels of minerals and electrolytes), where the inspiration came from, why they're targeting the specific market of athletes, and a ton more. We got stuck into their first two brews - Trail Blazer, their golden ale with salt and blackcurrants, and Extra Mile, their low-cal nano IPA. This was a fascinating one, get it in ya! Episode sponsor is Quince & Co. and my Longaberger home business. Travel with me from the Setesdal Region of Norway, to Scotland, to the U.S. to explore lice in knitting and literature.  Robert Burns' poem "To a Louse" is read by Alan Wood of Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland.  Alan is friend of the charming Louise, host of a podcast I enjoy, The Caithness Craft Collective.  I read Robert Frost's poem "A Considerable Speck" which isn't exactly about a louse, but could be.   I review the books that I consider most important for those interested in Norwegian Sweater knitting.  Of course, there are many out there so I just picked my favorites.  Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Without Tears, Knitting Workshop, or The Opinionated Knitter Sheila McGregor's The Complete Book of Traditional Scandinavian Knitting Norwegian Knitting Designs by Annichen Sibbern Bohn.   For the very enthusiastic knitters and historians, consider Annemor Sundbo's Setesdal Sweaters: The History of The Norwegian Lice Pattern. There is an update on my projects, although the Norwegian sweater has been stalled for the past week.  I finished Baby Slippers from Knitting at Home by Leanne Prouse. They turned out lousy. I started on a new project and picked up a pair of socks that had been in hibernation since the summer. Thanks to everyone who has sent well wishes to my mother who fell last week and broke her arm last week and also to me and the family.  You are wonderful people!  The music is compliments of World Champion Piper, Bruce Gandy, from his CD My Father's Son.  Available at www.brucegandymusic.com.
