Meet WBD Hosts, Kam & Jess! They have so much in common... Business Professionals, Parents, Artists & Dropouts. You heard that correct. Leaving the corporate world & throwing out that college degree was not an easy feat for either of them. Through years of growing in their careers, they both had a different idea of what success looked like. And honestly, it belonged outside of the droning 9 to 5. Now running several, full-time, small businesses from home, Kam & Jess saw the need for a podcast that wasn't going to shy away from the hard parts of working for yourself. Join us every Friday!
The Wisdom by Design podcast is a truly remarkable show that has quickly become one of my favorites. From the moment I started listening, I felt welcomed and at home. The hosts, Kam and Jess, have created an environment that feels relatable and engaging, making it easy to connect with their discussions. This podcast couldn't have come at a better time in this generation, as it encourages individuals to embrace their talents and cultivate their minds for success, without feeling the need to rely solely on a degree. It offers practical advice and inspiration for the average person looking to create something meaningful in their lives.
One of the best aspects of The Wisdom by Design podcast is its authenticity. Kam and Jess don't shy away from discussing both the good and bad aspects of starting a business and rebelling against societal norms. They provide insights into their own experiences as young entrepreneurs, sharing valuable lessons learned along the way. This transparency keeps me motivated to keep pursuing my own goals and reminds me that setbacks are just part of the journey towards success. Additionally, the podcast always delivers unique and intricate thoughts on various topics, providing fresh perspectives that ignite new ideas.
While I thoroughly enjoy this podcast, there are a few areas that could be improved. Sometimes, I find myself wanting more depth in certain discussions or examples to better illustrate their points. Although they cover a wide range of topics related to design and entrepreneurship, occasionally I feel like there could be more detailed insights provided or in-depth interviews with experts in specific fields. However, this is only a minor drawback in an otherwise fantastic podcast.
In conclusion, The Wisdom by Design podcast is an inspiring and motivating show that has had a significant impact on my life. Through its relatable content and friendly banter between Kam and Jess, it offers encouragement to pursue one's passions without fear or hesitation. If you're someone who feels stuck in the corporate world or longs for change in your career path, this podcast will provide you with the motivation and practical advice needed to take that leap of faith. Kam and Jess have created something truly special with this podcast, and I eagerly look forward to each new episode.

To buy an Ad or to not buy an Ad.. that is the question. If you are a business owner, you have unfortunately been a part of the rat-race that is social media. Have you ever stopped to think about what part social media plays in our everyday lives? In this episode, Kam & Jess break down two documentaries on Netflix, The Social Dilemma and The Great Hack, and what it means to be a business owner in a world that uses our identities as a form of currency. We know what you are thinking, it does kinda sound like a conspiracy theory, but we aren't here to feed you bullshit. The reality is, we all have a moral responsibility when it comes to targeting our ideal clients. For entrepreneurs, cutting social media out completely just isn't an option anymore. So, how DO we drive traffic to our businesses and find new clients without the help of social media advertising? The answer is right under your nose. Put down the multi-level marketing pamphlet and plug in to this week's conversation ;) It's going to be a bumpy ride! Her personality literally shines through every video and post she makes. She is uplifting and honest about the behind the scenes of her craft. She does everything by hand; the painting, printing, order taking and shipping, all while finding time to create pieces of art that are freezing the chaos in the world around us today for all to see for years to come. Leila says: “I've always made my work because I felt like I needed it” 21:00 Leila speaks about her inspirations: Going to Art Basel, The MOMA, always consuming art whenever she could. She cites Glenn Ligon (a black, queer artist who focuses on typography) as a major inspiration. 26:22 We ask how does creating and mental health intersect? Leila wants to work more when she's upset and less when she's happy. 29:00 We ask how was it taking art from a hobby to a business? Leila doesn't sell her paintings so she has to find other ways to create an income, so more time has to go where she can make money, and social media has a big impact on her ability to make money. 34:10 We ask How does being a content creator impact your work? Tiktok mutuals have helped her navigate creating content. Tiktok doesn't have to be so professional and they can really be insights into your life. She suggest you film everything you do. Not just ‘picture perfect' parts of your life. 40:45 We talk about how to be an artist you have to create your own style and that can cause us to feel alone. Some of us hear the word "book" and wince at the pain of book reports in school. Honestly, it has scared a lot of people away from a world that has helped people grow for centuries. Before the internet? Books. The first true highway of knowledge, but most of us can't be bothered to pick up a book, let alone buy one. WHY IS THAT? Kam & Jess here, on our Final Episode of Season 1, opening up about our relationship with books and how much it sucked. From being forced to take pop quizzes to cramming chapters upon chapters in college, most of us would rather suffer than open up a book again. Even someone texting us a paragraph is audacious. Books have been forgotten and swept aside and they may be one of the most valuable resources we use in our businesses today. Ducks and horses everywhere! 40:45- Kam's second at bat! 43:47- Final Question!
Could you dare say that 2020 was a year of growth? Kam & Jess think so. With the pain and uncertainty that came with COVID-19, most of us were forced to sit in discomfort. For a majority of the population, that discomfort came with some extreme self-reflection. Join us this week on Wisdom by Design as Jess & Kam discuss the parts of 2020 that meant something. With a dash of goal setting, you have yourself a podcast episode that could be found wedged between the self-help section and the viciously awkward Dystopian Fiction. Actually, That would be pretty cool... now that we think about it. Thanks for walking the halls with us, Dropout. This week on Episode 8 of Wisdom by Design, Jess & Kam lay out an episode that will have you taking a good, hard look in the mirror. If we have learned anything from running a small business during COVID, it's that hiding from yourself will only make it worse. If you're ready to see how your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are running your life? Tune in. Let's take your business from auto-pilot to in control. Do you ever feel like your business is working against you? You put in the time, effort, and money but at the end of the day you leave exhausted and not quite sure where to go next. You're spread thinner than ever with no answer in sight. Whether you've been in business for years or just filed for your LLC this morning, running a small business is hard. It's even harder when you don't have a plan. As business owners, we feel like we have to take on everything ourselves, not realizing that some of those projects could actually be hurting us. This week on Episode 7 of Wisdom by Design, Kam & Jess find out what they've been blindly fighting against in their businesses; themselves. D'angelo Bragg, owner of GroundUp Consulting, LLC, invited them to take a look at their strengths from a different point of view aka the DiSC® Assessment. Companies all over the globe are using this tool to equip their employees with raised self-awareness in order to help them thrive in the work place. The best part? You don't have to be a giant corporation to have access to it. If you feel like you're walking blindly, are confused on why your ventures never work out or have room for a little self-improvement? Meet WBD Hosts, Kam & Jess! They have so much in common... Business Professionals, Parents, Artists & Dropouts. You heard that correct. Leaving the corporate world & throwing out that college degree was not an easy feat for either of them. Through years of growing in their careers, they both had a different idea of what success looked like. And honestly, it belonged outside of the droning 9 to 5. Now running several, full-time, small businesses from home, Kam & Jess saw the need for a podcast that wasn't going to shy away from the hard parts of working for yourself. Join us every Friday to catch an ear full of laughs while we discuss the ups and downs of being a small business owner, what it's like to be a creative trying to make it outside of a steady paycheck and a parent who just wants to keep their house clean.
