Queer and Cult Cinema, LGBT issues, pop culture, & filmmaking podcast hosted by John Doolan and Spencer Swindon.
After losing an episode to remote recording technical difficulties, we're finally back to cover the finale of the Laurie Strode Halloween saga. Halloween Ends is even more divisive than its predecessor, but does it deserve all the hate? Or does it deserve all the love? Tune in to find out what we think. 00.00 - 27.00 - Intro and what we've been watching for Spooky Season. 27.00 - 49.45 - A quick overview on our thoughts of Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills, as well as our take on the stories surrounding THAT scream queens group photo. 49.45 - 2.32.00 - A deep dive into Halloween Ends. 2.32.40 - Bloopers.
We catch up on everything we've been up to and watching before diving into 2022's big screen slashers Scream and X! Also discussed, the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Exploited, and Lovelace. Also, we'll be recording remotely moving forward, so expect episodes at a more frequent pace moving forward. Please drop any episode suggestions at @youcantsiwithus_podcast on Instagram!
We couldn't let the holiday season go by without gifting everyone with a little unplanned bonus episode. We catch up on everything we've been watching since wrapping up production on a film, and go in depth into all our annual favorite Christmas watches including Home Alone, Seeds, Black Christmas, and John's thoughts on Netflix's new gay rom-com, Single All the Way. Finally, we talk about the unofficial Black Christmas fan film sequel, It's Me Billy, now streaming on youtube!
We couldn't let spooky season pass without churning out an epic Halloween episode! We went into Halloween Kills wanting to love it, and well... we had some thoughts. Immediately following our Halloween Kills review, we re-rank all the entries in the series. But first, we talk about what we've been watching. John dived into more recent horror fare like There's Someone Inside Your House and the Chucky TV series, and Spencer went vintage with a crop of Made-for-TV "classics" like Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby and Day of Judgement. The Halloween Kills Discussion begins at the 42 minute mark!
As Pride month comes to a close, we're going out with one of the most subversive and possibly progressive (?) horror movies of the 1980s. Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker takes the psycho-biddy subgenre, throws in a dash of 80s slasher, and goes overboard with incest and homosexuality to create one hell of a lost gem of a movie. Also, we discuss our thoughts the commercialization of Pride in general in quite the old man rant.
In our annual prom episode, we delve into the underrated Christian satire Saved! There's plenty to unpack with what this movie is trying to say, and how dark the themes and humor actually get in this "lighthearted" Mandy Moore romp. And since it's June, there is PLENTY of queer content to explore!
We're back and we're defending the queer mess-terpiece known as Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin! Though one of the most despised films in the comic book superhero genre, this one had a big impact on both of us at a young age, and there's no denying our love for every over-stylized second of it. Also discussed, Showgirls, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and Godzilla vs Kong.
We continue our 90s cult VHS double features with two of the late '90s horror step-children! In a time where slashers ruled the box office, Disturbing Behavior and The Faculty took a chance by calling back to the likes of The Stepford Wives and Body Snatchers. We delve into why these two films are still worth a watch with their unique aesthetics and queer readings, as well as a slew of memorable performances, humor, and truly great suspense sequences. Also discussed, Netflix's The Night Stalker, William Castle's Shanks, the latest season of Drag Race, a VERY special episode of Little House on the Prairie, and the new queer musical adaptation, The Prom.
We're back with a 90s psycho-sexual teen stalker double feature! Both The Crush and Fear are fan favorites amongst millennial queers and women, but why are we so drawn to them? And how do they hold up under a 2021 eye? We dive into the entertainment and camp value in both of these cult classics, as well as discuss the endlessly interesting (and sometimes aggravating) gender politics going on in each! Also discussed: Wonder Woman 1984, Massacre at Central High, and censoring archaic slurs in older films.
We're back with a little stocking stuffer for all you naughty boys and girls. It's our annual Christmas episode and we're making the yuletide gay as hell with Hallmark's alleged queer movie, The Christmas House, and Clea DuVall's Happiest Season! Are these worthy new yearly traditions? Has Hallmark made up for its past indiscretions with their new inclusivity? Did John read way too deep into Happiest Season and come out depressed and lonely thinking about past heartbreaks? Tune in to find out! We also talk about all the other yuletide goodness we've been watching, including yearly favorites and more new offerings.
Happy Halloween! For our special bonus episode this year, we decided to gush over our love of the 1985 ABC TV Movie, The Midnight Hour! Watch along with us, or just listen as we gush about this gorgeously made little movie, while going off on a number of horror and Halloween related tangents. And don't forget, Ghouls Just Want to Have Fun.
Happy Halloween, ghoulfriends! We've talked about the Halloween films as a whole in the past, but this time, we're giving the often maligned Jamie Lloyd/Cult of Thorn trilogy another watch! We dive into everything from that amazing Part 4 opening, to Pleasence's straight up INSANE Loomis performance in Part 5, to what the hell exactly IS going on during the finale of Part 6. And yes, we talk Tina. Lots and lots of Tina. You're welcome. We also chat about some of the sequels that almost were!
With everyone's favorite spooky season officially in full swing, we sat down for a Ray Bradbury double feature with two film adaptations that take a sobering and honest look at aging and mortality from the eyes of a child. Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Halloween Tree should be annual October watches for kids and adult alike, and we dive into everything from queer coded villains, to the representation of evil in human form (and what it says about religion - or lack thereof), to the importance of not patronizing the youth when it comes to the reality of death. Light your pumpkin spice candle, cuddle under a blanket, and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!
Life and Covid might have gotten in the way of us releasing our annual Pride episode in June, but we're gay as hell all year round, so why limit our celebration to just one month! We dove into one of our favorite Nightmare on Elm Street sequels, Freddy's Revenge, as well as the brand new documentary exploring the homosexual themes and backlash of said film, Scream, Queen: My Nightmare on Elm Street. But before that, we catch up with how pandemic life is treating us, and talk about what we've been watching, including Urban Legend, Trilogy of Terror 2, Canada's Drag Race, Don't Go in the House, and the Rhode Island homegrown indie slasher, Death Drop Gorgeous.
Miss Rona made sure social events were canceled this year, which is all the more reason for us to make sure we make a return with our annual Prom episode! It's another VHS horror double feature as we dive into the fourth installments of both the Prom Night and Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchises. These are often regarded as the worst entries in each of their respective franchises, but we found a lot to enjoy in both of these sometimes misguided gems. But before that, we'll talk about how we're doing in lock-down, and what we've been watching to occupy our down time.
Happy New Queer! We celebrate the beginning of a new decade by watching Blumhouse's latest Into the Dark installment, Midnight Kiss. Is this the gay slasher we've been waiting for all decade? Also, we ramble off our favorite movies from the past ten years, as well as talk about all the precautions to take before meeting someone off of a trashy dating app.
The Christmas season isn't over until you hear our thoughts on the new Black Christmas, as well as 2012's Silent Night! Both remakes of classic slashers do their best to differentiate themselves from their predecessors, but are either successful at becoming yearly Yuletide traditions? Also discussed, everything we've been watching to get us into the holiday spirit.
Happy Halloween! We're back with a Halloween Double Feature from Hell! We discuss two recent Haunt gone wrong movies, Hell House LLC and Hell Fest, and conclude which one is best for your spooky viewing pleasure during the best holiday of the year. We also touch on the Hell House LLC sequels, as well as the other scary movies we've been binging during October. Happy Holidays, Ghoulfriends!
After quite the hiatus, we're back to talk about all things spooky as we get ready for Halloween! We dive into our favorite autumnal movies and TV shows and recommend what to watch to get you into the Halloween spirit. Also discussed, what we've been up to since the last recording, as well as a list of go-to teen movies all gay boys grew up loving.
It's Prom 2019, and we're exploring the loss of virginity with 1999's American Pie and 2008's Blockers! Both films tread similar ground, yet both are firmly planted in their time period to provide quite the interesting comparisons. Prepare for some long tangents on this one! Also, being Pride month and all, we dived deep into modern gay dating and the use of the dreaded apps. NOTE: This episode was recorded almost 4 weeks ago before we left town for a film shoot, so any current events discussed in society and our lives is not greatly outdated. Enjoy, nonetheless!
We're back from our hiatus to tackle all three Pet Sematary films! Does the original still hold up? What in the hell was the remake actually trying to do? Is Pet Sematary Two actually the best film out of the three? Tune in to hear us deep dive into this franchise. But first, we discuss what we've been watching, as well as our thoughts on season 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race. Instagram: youcantsitwithus_podcast Twitter: YCSWU_podcast
To kick off the 20th Anniversary of the greatest year in teen movie history, we FINALLY invite "It's Timmah, Bitch!" to sit with us at the lunch table to resurrect our Class of 1999 series with a Kirsten Dunst double feature of Drop Dead Gorgeous and Dick! These two subversive comedies were dead on arrival in theaters, but deservedly earned their cult classic statuses over the years, mostly due to being embraced by the Queer Community. We dive into why they're both worth you rediscovering, and why Drop Dead Gorgeous is a fucking MASTERPIECE.
Surprise! We're back before the end of the year with a special bonus commentary of 1988's RIDICULOUS A Very Brady Christmas! Which Brady boy is the cutest? How soon is too soon for Robert Reed jokes? Why is Jan still kind of the worst? What the hell was Alice THINKING taking Sam back after he seasoned another woman's rump roast?!?!?! End the 2018 Holiday season right and watch along on Hulu!
Christmas isn't over until you've listened to us talk about a British Santa Claus killer and a vengeful aborted fetus! We chose two sleazy Christmas slashers from different eras, Don't Open Till Christmas and Red Christmas, to help us ring in the HoliGays. Do the gaping plot holes in Don't Open Till Christmas ruin its cockney enjoyment? Does Red Christmas have an agenda and stance on pro-life vs pro-choice? But before that, we talk about the brilliance of Anna and the Apocalypse, the sheer perfection of the original Black Christmas, the merits of Ed Wood's "lost" film Take it Out in Trade, the problem with modern day 80s slasher homages, and 14 gift ideas for the homosexual in your life. www.screamingpods.com Instagram: YouCantSitWithUs_Podcast Twitter: YCSWU_Podcast
Why do people love the sugary sweet, conflict free romantic holiday movies currently being churned out by the dozen every year for your television viewing pleasure? Are they just brainless fun, or do the female targeted audiences of these movies deserve better? We watched Netflix's A Christmas Prince and A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding to kick off a bigger conversation about the messaging behind this immensely popular genre! But first, we play catch-up with everything we've been watching, including a revisit of the Cher and Winona Ryder classic, Mermaids, an in-depth review of the Suspiria remake, and weighing in on how Bohemian Rhapsody handles queer culture in a mainstream targeted film! www.screamingpods.com Twitter: YCSWU_Podcast Instagram: YouCantSitWithUs_Podcast
We recorded a special bonus commentary again this year for, in our opinion, the worst Halloween movie in the franchise. We talk about the work print version of the film, deleted scenes, Michael's SEVERE eyebrows, and a drinking game that you can play along with from home! Cheers, queers! Is The Exorcist 3 a worthy follow up to the original classic? Let Pazuzu brush you with his wings by tuning into our in-depth discussion of why we think they're both worth your time! We also saw Halloween (2018) and give a spoiler filled mini review of our initial thoughts. Friday the 13th may have already come and gone, but it's always FriGAY the 13th in our hearts. We dive into the entire Friday the 13th film franchise, and count down the 8 Paramount era films from our least favorite to favorite! But first, we cried in homosexual over Cher singing ABBA in Mamma Mia 2, and answered the age old question that has plagued the both of us for years: Are we undateable? 0:00:00 - 0:20:00: Everything we've been watching, including our first thoughts on Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! 0:20:00 - 1:03:30: Are we undateable? Als, Pride.com's list of 20 things learned from being a queer slut. 1:03:30 - END: The Friday the 13th series!
Before PRIDE month concludes, we sit down to talk about the queertastic, Drag Queen road trip classics, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar! Both these films paved new ground for the Queer population in the 90s by being able to strike both comedic and dramatic tones with their colorful cast of characters, and we dive into why they've been able to stand the test of time. Before that, we'll talk about two new teen gay movies, Akron and Alex Strangelove, as well as the conflicting feelings of Queer Eye's treatment of toxic religion.
We're back with our fourth annual prom episode! This year, we look back on two 80s teen clasics with Valley Girl and Just One of the Guys. We'll explore the staying power behind these two female postivie films, and why the LGBT community relates so much to them. But first, we discuss two TV shows that were unceromoniously pulled off the air and why. Sit back, relax, itch your balls, and enjoy this totally tripendicular retro double feature! It may not be in 3D, but your face is.
We had a double feature of two female lead modern slasher satires, and walked away feeling like the strong, independant women we know we truly are! We all know Psycho is a masterpiece, but what’s better than a masterpiece? A completely unnecessary, yet highly entertaining sequel to a masterpiece! And what’s better than a completely unnecessary, yet highly entertaining sequel to a masterpiece? Three completely unnecessary, yet highly entertaining sequels to a masterpiece! We wear our love for the Psycho sequels on our sleeves as we delve into Norman Bates’ psychotic transvestite split personality. Were these films simply cheap cash-ins on a popular name during the slasher heyday? Or were they dark explorations of hidden lifestyles and sexual confusion at the height of the AIDS crisis? Or maybe both! But first, we saw Fifty Shades Freed and the immortal classic Showgirls on the big screen, and have lots to unpack about both! Also discussed is a list of 13 questions straight people have about gay sex. Spoilers: We talk about poop. Bon appétit!
Bust out the Mall Madness and Dream Phone, ladies, because we’re having a good ole fashioned early 90s slumber party! But before that, we dive into the first two episodes of All Stars 3 and discuss whether the new Queer Eye reboot is a progressive step in the right direction, or just a gay minstrel show!
For our virgin episode on the Screaming Pods Network, we sat down to talk about three very different queer love stories. First up is the awards darling, Call Me by Your Name, followed by the atmospheric 2006 short film, Bugcrush, and last but certainly not least, the Australian coming of age dark fairy tale, Boys in the Trees. But first, we kiki about the Heathers TV show trailer, The latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, and why everyone needs to watch Drop Dead Gorgeous. Our three feature reviews are full of spoilers, so check the films out, or skip over them until you do!
