Byl Holte (pronounced “Bill Holt”) is many things. He is Black. He is gay. He is Patti LaBelle's adopted son/nephew. And he has a significant following on X. But he has been largely isolated from his family and friends because of (wait for it)… politics. That hasn't stopped him from expressing his opinions about feminism, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden's America. This is his first-ever on-camera interview. Oh — and he was at the Capitol on January 6th. After a lengthy silence, Justin Mezetin states that his biggest challenge in life has been trying to understand what authenticity really is and even more challenging, how to live in authenticity. He speaks of the different ways he didn't fit in. He's gay, black, and a Seventh Day Adventist. He says that in every space, he didn't fit in because at least one of those attributes. At age 37, he's got a better grip on authenticity, but now facing the next challenge of vulnerability. We talk a lot about inner safety and how that is such an important component to both authenticity and vulnerability. Ari DeWolf describes himself as somewhat of a "Unicorn" being gay, black and Jewish while leading the effort to expose "gender affirming" health care as fraudulent and harmful.Ari cut his political teeth through ten years of battling the Chicago political machine, first as an outspoken student activist and then as a lobbyist in the state legislature. For a season, he was an education outreach manager at Reason Foundation, working on legislative outreach and coalition building to advance Reason's education policy agenda. Prior to joining Reason, Ari was a government affairs specialist at the Illinois Policy Institute, where he advocated for budget, tax, ethics, education, labor, and criminal justice reforms.Today, Ari is the Director of Outreach for Do No Harm Medicine, a diverse group of physicians, healthcare professionals, medical students, patients, and policymakers united by a mission to protect healthcare from a radical, divisive, and discriminatory ideologies. It's a shame that politics has become so embedded in medicine but we celebrate groups like Do No Harm Medicine for standing in the gap to right the ship.I am privileged to chat with Ari today and hope you can tune in. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. And when it comes to the pro-life movement, this phrase couldn't be more accurate. The pro-life movement claims to value the sanctity of life, yet their actions suggest otherwise. They are only “pro-life” until the moment of birth, after which they seem to disappear into the ether. It's a bad day when you're gay, Black, American, and arrested for drug possession in Russia. Unfortunately, that is the reality for WNBA star Brittney Griner. Is Donald Trump becoming unelectable? Ever tuned into the soundtrack of your life and wondered how music makes memories come alive? Well, it's time to crank up the volume with us, Jon and Andrew, as we hit play on the soundtracks that have defined us. From the soulful strains of "bonnie raitt's, I can't make you love me helping Jon navigate heartbreak, to Andrew's headbanging journey with Norwegian metal group, Dimmu Borgir- we've got a playlist that plays out our lives. Now, remember the time when the world tried putting you in a box? We've faced it too! The outgoing Jon had everyone mistaking him for gay once, and that's when we learned a thing or two about stereotypes. We also get personal, revealing how chosen families can sometimes offer more acceptance than biological ones. Speaking of relationships, prepare to laugh (or relate) as we share our high school memories and the hilarious story behind Jon's first hickey. Finally, are you ready to rock out with us at a concert? Or maybe you'd rather discuss the brilliance of Denzel Washington? Whatever your preference, we're serving it all. From Andrew's first concert plans to our mutual fascination with the Beatles, we're jamming on all frequencies. History lesson for you: "Punk Rock" was not invented by the British in the mid 1970's. I know, it surprised me too. The term was apparently coined by music critics (those guys) back in the 1960 to refer to the aggressive, low-fi music coming from Detroit, Chicaco, and New York that was a direct sonic counter-point to the radio-friendly, squeaky clean, "hippie dippy" music (Fifth Dimension, Turtles, Sonny and Cher, BJ Thomas, et al) popular at the time. As with American blues, it was adopted and refined by "post-Mod" Londoners (some would say directed by Malcom McLaren) who gave it much of the subsequent imagery, fashion, and culture surrounding it. Since then, as with any good genre, it has been reclaimed, lost, split into a dozen sub-genres, buried deep in the earth for years at a time, dug up, recycled, made mainstream, driven back underground, and so forth. This week's guests, Gay Black Republican, while certainly not one of the original punk bands of Indy, are long-time veterans of the Indianapolis music scene and could be argued are the current reigning kings of that scene. Through six full-length albums and about as many EP's, bootlegs, and live recorded sets, the band has evolved from the garage band ethos to a more refined, intelligent-but-irreverent powerhouse of energy and musicianship. Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the band, and as we learn in this interview, they show no signs of letting up or slowing down.
