This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!
In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki analyze HBO's The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Set in Matt Reeves' Batman universe following the events of The Batman movie, the show explores the power vacuum left in Gotham's criminal underworld after the fall of crime boss Carmine Falcone. What makes Oz Cobb a compelling villain protagonist? The hosts discuss how the series portrays Oswald "Oz" Cobb (The Penguin) as a complex character who constantly shifts between sympathetic and monstrous. Unlike previous iterations that leaned into fantastical elements, this Penguin is grounded as a mobster with a physical disability who uses his exceptional charisma and manipulation skills to climb Gotham's criminal ladder. The show reveals his troubled childhood, including his complicated relationship with his mother and the shocking revelation that he was responsible for his brothers' deaths. How does The Penguin explore themes of respect and power?Matthew and Riki examine how Oz's actions are driven by his desperate need for respect and recognition. The series shows how he positions himself as a champion for the neglected citizens of Crown Point—getting electricity restored to the neighborhood while simultaneously building his criminal empire. This "crime socialism" approach allows him to frame himself as fighting for fairness and equality within the criminal world, convincing lower-level criminals to revolt against their bosses and support him instead. What makes the relationship between Oz and Victor so central to the story? The hosts highlight how the mentor-protégé relationship between Penguin and Victor Aguilar serves as the emotional core of the series. Though toxic and complicated—with Penguin both bullying Victor for his stutter while fiercely defending him from others who do the same—their bond provides some of the most compelling moments in the show. The hosts note interesting parallels to the Batman-Robin dynamic, positioning it as a dark mirror of that heroic relationship.Other topics covered in the episode:How Cristin Milioti's Sophia Falcone serves as a compelling antagonist with her own complex motivations for revengeThe shocking finale twist and its implications for Penguin's character developmentThe portrayal of Arkham Asylum and its problematic depiction of mental health institutionsConnections to Matt Reeves' broader Batman universe and potential future storylinesThe grounded approach to classic Batman villains compared to previous adaptationsHow the show depicts crime families filling power vacuums—similar to real-world political situationsThe Penguin demonstrates how villain-centered narratives can provide rich ethical territory to explore when characters are given depth and complexity. By examining the psychology and motivations behind traditionally one-dimensional villains, the show creates compelling television that challenges viewers to question their sympathies while never fully redeeming its monstrous protagonist. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. In this Patreon-exclusive episode available now, we try to keep a cool head about a movie that provoked a lot of vitriol to have a clear-eyed discussion about what works and what doesn't. This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include The X-Files, Groundhog Day, Source Code, The X-Files: Fight The Future, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, You've Got Mail, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thelma, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Beekeeper, The Art of War, The Foreigner, Superman Returns, Strangers on a Train, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, The House, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Bourne Identity, Clear and Present Danger, Mission: Impossible, Batman & Robin, The Green Hornet, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Pay It Forward, On The Basis Of Sex, The Leftovers, The Morning Show, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Three Kings, The Men Who Stare At Goats, 24, Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, Twisters and Legally Blonde. Next week, we're switching things up and going back to Hayley's new VHS stack to talk one of the all-time great westerns: 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's deconstruction of the genre that made him famous and a worthy winner of Best Picture Oscar gold. Unforgiven is streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the US. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

In this episode Billy and Emma recap episode 4 of The Heart Killers. They go off on many tangents about tattoos, bisexual superheroes and janitors. They also share their crackest theory yet.
This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!

Alongside the unmissable Clueless (Amy Heckerling, 1995) we take in some of Alicia's other noteworthy roles throughout the episode. From a mixed bag of 90s flicks with The Crush (Alan Shapiro, 1993), Batman & Robin (Joel Schumacher, 1997), Blast From The Past (Hugh Wilson, 1999) and more recent works like The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2017) and Reptile (Grant Singer, 2023). Prepare for a bitter harvest... this pod has come at last. Joel Schumacher's second and final Batman film put the franchise on ice (pun intended). Andy, Steven, and guests Kai and Aaron pull out their bat skates and absolutely destroy this film. We couldn't pull the plug on this one fast enough.
Madame Web opens low... almost as low as its Rotten Tomatoes score, which is currently only 2% above Batman & Robin. Is Sony TRYING to lose money here, or what? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: In the ever-turbulent sea of superhero cinema, Sony's latest voyage, "Madame Web," has hit a squall that might just sink its box office hopes before it could even properly set sail. Opening to numbers that could generously be described as underwhelming, "Madame Web" is floundering in waters almost as chilly as its reception on Rotten Tomatoes. With a score that hovers a mere 2% above the infamous "Batman & Robin" (yes, the one with the bat-nipples and ice puns aplenty), one has to wonder if Sony's map was missing a few crucial details. "Batman & Robin," for those who have mercifully forgotten, is often cited as a low point in superhero cinema, a film so maligned that it became a punchline for what not to do when adapting comics to the big screen. To be mentioned in the same breath is, to put it mildly, not a badge of honor. Yet, here we are, with "Madame Web" teetering on the edge of joining that not-so-prestigious club. Is Sony trying to lose money, you ask? On the surface, it seems like a question that answers itself. No studio sets out with the intention of taking a financial dive, especially not with a property that's part of the ever-lucrative Spider-Man universe. Yet, the decisions that led to this point are worth scrutinizing. From casting choices to marketing strategies and perhaps most critically, the creative direction of the film itself, every step in the journey of "Madame Web" to the big screen could offer clues as to why it's stumbling now. The superhero genre, despite being seemingly bulletproof at the box office, is not without its kryptonite. Audiences have grown savvier, expectations have soared, and the tolerance for mediocrity has diminished. In a landscape dominated by giants like Marvel Studios, which has finely tuned its formula for both critical and commercial success, any misstep is magnified. "Madame Web," it seems, has not only misstepped but may have taken a tumble down the stairs. "You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now, the music of the night." Did you not expect us to eventually get to an Andrew Lloyd Webber episode on the podcast? We watched the divisive Joel Schumacher 2004 big screen adaptation "The Phantom of the Opera". Musical theater gays might slap us accross the face with an opera glove for daring to defend this hardly-perfect screen adaptation. The gargatuan stage show took the world by storm when it debuted on London's West End in 1986 and musical theater was never the same. We reminisce about where we were when we first encountered The Phantom as well as the LONG journey to get from stage to screen. Was Joel Schumacher the perfect/only choice to direct? Andrew Lloyd Webber thought so. Let's be honest, it took a homosexual to really bring to life the camp, the spectacle, the pure theatricality of Phantom. Listen, when you have material complete with snyth-pop power ballads, underground boudoirs and crashing chandeliers, things are bound to get shall we say, theatrical. Hand the director of "Batman & Robin" and "The Lost Boys" the reins and the results are... well the results are a gothic, camp, swashbuckling piece of cinema. Cheers Joel wherever you are! Batman Forever set the wheels in motion for a brand new kind of Batman. Camp. With George Clooney taking over from Val Kilmer who took over from Michael Keaton this is where people truely fell out of love with the Batman francise. Even the likes of Batgirl, Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane didn't stop people crying about new levels of sillyness that left the reviews and box office lower than ever.
