2018 American romantic comedy film
POPULARITY
Teen films of the 1980s were notorious for treating consent as irrelevant, with scenes of boys spying in girls' locker rooms and tricking girls into sex. While contemporary movies now routinely prioritize consent, ensure date rape is no longer a joke, and celebrate girls' desires, sexual consent remains a problematic and often elusive ideal in teen films. In Consent Culture and Teen Films: Adolescent Sexuality in US Movies (Indiana UP, 2023), Michele Meek traces the history of adolescent sexuality in US cinema and examines how several films from the 2000s, including Blockers, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, The Kissing Booth, and Alex Strangelove, take consent into account. Yet, at the same time, Meek reveals that teen films expose how affirmative consent ("yes means yes") fails to protect youth from unwanted and unpleasant sexual encounters. By highlighting ambiguous sexual interactions in teen films—such as girls' failure to obtain consent from boys, queer teens subjected to conversion therapy camps, and youth manipulated into sexual relationships with adults—Meek unravels some of consent's intricacies rather than relying on oversimplification. By exposing affirmative consent in teen films as gendered, heteronormative, and cis-centered, Consent Culture and Teen Films suggests we must continue building a more inclusive consent framework that normalizes youth sexual desire and agency with all its complexities and ambivalences. En esta ocasión nos ponemos controversiales hablando de la versión netflix de Love, Simon: Alex Strangelove. Platicamos de la bifobia, lo cringe, y lo poco que recordábamos que esta película fuera tan mala.
The first rule of lunch therapy is "never cook for your patient," but I break that rule today with director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins, Alex Strangelove) for a very good reason: I'm married to him. In today's very special episode, we go deep on his submissiveness about food, his love for all things gooey, why he feels uncomfortable in formal/fusty dining rooms, and his love for apple pie. We also talk about how we travel together, hosting dinner parties together, grazing on set, forgetting to eat, and why we always fight about donuts. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My guest this week is Craig Johnson — director of the movies Skeleton Twins and Alex Strangelove, among many other projects. His creative interests straddle two very different worlds: Troubled suburban families, and weird creepy monsters … which maybe aren't so different after all. Fortunately, he gets to explore those topics on screen — thanks to a phone call many years ago that changed his life forever. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First — a reminder that I've been posting lots of fun videos about queer pop culture history over on my YouTube — I just released a new one about the gayest week in television history. And you can also head over to Patreon to see even more bonus videos. Also check out my cute little newsletter where I share sneak peeks at what I'm working on at mattbaume.com.Also a big thanks to everyone who supports the Sewers of Paris on Patreon. And to everyone who's reviewed it on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.

Raise your hand if you're in love with Peter Kavinsky? ...and now that we're all gathered here, Tamar and Christine are super excited to talk about the hits and misses of Netflix's brand new romantic comedy surge. Was Set it Up the set up to this entire movement? Is A Christmas Prince a good movie, a GREAT movie, or a really really bad movie? Was The Kissing Booth a terrible bait-and-switch? Why aren't there more movies like Alex Strangelove? And of course... we're talking about To All the Boys I've Loved Before (and Christine is REALLY adamant that everyone goes on to read the books!) and the magic that is Pacey Witter, oops, Peter Kavinsky! We're also talking about what we're looking forward to in fall TV (HINT: The Good Place premieres on Sept. 27!) and we're addressing the big Greg recast on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. And Christine is really f*cking excited about Murphy Brown. As always, the episode never ends here! Find us on social media @shippingroompod to keep the discussion going! We'll be waiting! :)

This week, Andrew and Apoorva talk about the deliriously bold vision of “Sorry to Bother You,” which only makes the Netflix Original film “Alex Strangelove” seem all the more milquetoast. They never thought they’d say the words, but “Love, Simon” did it first and did it better. Subscribe for free, review us at Apple Podcasts, and follow us on Twitter: @PoTCPodcast. Set it Up, Brothers' Nest and Alex Strangelove were discussed. With Lisa Kovacevic, Stuart Richards and Paul Anthony Nelson.
Back to something a little less serious with "Alex Strangelove;" we just wish we could tell you it's good. It's not. Aside from just the general issues from a filmmaking standpoint, this movie is extremely problematic. From the way it handles the female characters, bi-erasure, and glorifying violence, it's the antithesis of "Love, Simon," the film it's bound to draw comparisons to. Just go see that instead. Clark guests again and aptly discusses the film and the bi-phobic aspects of it as well. Be sure to check us out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @CinemaQueens!

Before PRIDE month concludes, we sit down to talk about the queertastic, Drag Queen road trip classics, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar!
