It's back-to-school month on The Blind Rage Podcast! Kicking things off is MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH, an experiment in ‘70s exploitation notorious for waiting until the last scene to show any adults (teachers, parents) and for being an undeniable inspiration for the 1989 cult classic HEATHERS. When David (Derrel Maury) transfers to Central High at the insistence of an old friend (Andrew Stevens), he discovers that the school is under a dictatorship led by the three richest, most popular students. Bored of seeing his fellow classmates ordered around and tormented, David decides to take matters into his own hands, dispatching of the school's leaders in grisly fashion. Almost immediately, those once considered underlings begin acting out in ways similar, if not worse, than those they've escaped. David decides there is only one thing he can do to finally set things right…

A Mississippi native who moved to South Bend in 1944 speaks about Black businesses on the west side.    Elmer Joseph came to South Bend from a resort community in Mississippi. His family was financially well off, yet still deeply impacted by Jim Crow segregation. He attended an all-Black school—and experienced a huge culture shock when he moved to South Bend to attend Central High.    Elmer remembers some of the many west side Black businesses around Linden Avenue.* He even opened up a business of his own, running a tavern on Chapin and Western.    In 2003, Civil Rights Heritage Center historian David Healey sat down with Mr. Joseph. They talked about his experiences growing up on the west side, and what life was like for a Black business owner here in the mid-twentieth century.    * Quick note: During the recording, the host says Linden Street instead of Avenue. He must have had the last episode with Odie Mae Streets on the brain and got his wires crossed. This episode was produced by Jon Watson from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and by George Garner from the Civil Rights Heritage Center.    Full transcript of this episode available here.   Want to learn more about South Bend's history? This is the history of Van's Pig Stands as written in “Historic Shawnee, The History of Shawnee & Pottawatomie County” by Bob Burke and Eric Dabney, published 2014: Oklahoma's oldest barbeque restaurant continuously owned and operated by the same family is Van's Pig Stands. First finding fame in the heart of historic Shawnee, nearly a century later its history is palpable. From the mouthwatering food to the friendly service and comfortable atmosphere, Van's is a place of nostalgia and great eating. an old black and white picture of a man with his son standing next to wooden store The roots of this venerable establishment were originally planted by Tennessee native Leroy “Van” Vandegrift, who moved with family to Oklahoma City, where he graduated from Central High. He served in the Army before working as a tool dresser in the oil fields of North Texas and began cooking for fellow roughnecks on rig sites. Around 1928, Van opened his first Pig Stand in a hotel in Wewoka, Oklahoma. It was a small little store serving barbecue such as the Pig Sandwich® and Ribs. The menu also included other types of sandwiches such as Liverwurst, Pimento, Chicken Salad, and Cream Cheese. In 1929 a second Pig Stand opened in Seminole and was then sold in 1935. Pig Stands were later opened in Wichita Falls, Texas and Wichita, Kansas. On June 5, 1930, Van opened his third Pig Stand Location at 714 Highland in Shawnee. In the same year, Van married Thelma Maree Glenn. In 1935 the Shawnee store moved across the street to its present location. The stories of these earliest days in the life of Van's flourishing Pig Stands are legendary among the family. During the Great Depression that swept across America throughout the 1930s, Van's sandwiches—which originally cost 10 cents and had risen to 30 cents for hungry customers—returned to the 10 cent price, with a malt and pig sandwich costing a whopping 20 cents. The restaurant was also home to the area's first ice cream machine. Specialized menu items and secret sauces quickly became a trademark event at the Pig Stand. Its loyal customers enjoyed hot BBQ sauces with jalapeño and cayenne pepper mixed so perfectly on-site that they were eventually sold in six ounce bottles from the back seat of Van's son's car. Van's wife, Thelma, came up with the twice-baked potato that packed full of bacon, onions, salt and pepper, and served with garlic butter. Later, she was in charge of dinner banquets that included large private parties where she served her famous chicken pilaf. Van's son, Jerry, remembers the time well. “When I was working the sandwich corner, my mother was making chopped pork ‘pig' sandwiches and putting the buns on the grill with butter. We later took the BBQ sauce and thinned it down to paint the buns before we dropped them in a bun toaster. We included a relish, too. On those older menus, we didn't have BBQ though. We sold pimento cheese, bratwurst, and even a cow's tongue sandwich for real cheap. Our specials included chicken fried chicken or chicken and dumplings, beans, Rueben sandwiches. I felt like we had too much on the menu in those early days, but dad wanted it that way.” Within its first twenty years, the stand in Shawnee was a bustling place and even included the famous Charcoal Room by the early 1950s. It was originally created with a dance hall and shuffleboard and included an impressive Wurlitzer jukebox. Without a doubt, Van's remains another great reason to spend some time in Shawnee and get to know its many assets. The restaurant continues to welcome guests from around the country. They have also been catering for more than twenty years and continue to build on its past successes with numerous resources to handle parties attended by thousands. Today, Oklahoma's historic Van's Pig Stands is located at 717 East Highland Street and 3815 North Harrison Street in Shawnee and at 320 North Porter Street in Norman, and its newest location opened at 1991 Tower Drive-in Moore in April 2014. https://www.pigstands.com/

The Central Wetlands Reforestation Collective recently launched an initiative to plant 63,000 thousand trees in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. Today, we check back in with Verite's Lue Palmer who recently attended a day of volunteer tree planting. Last month, we brought you the story of Theatre Baton Rouge, which was in danger of closing in its 78th season due to rising production costs and budget mismanagement. The first team scheduled to make a selection is the Carolina Panthers. On today's SportsBeat KC, Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler joins Star columnist Sam McDowell in discussing the Panthers' position and how Carolina got the top pick without finishing with the NFL's worst record in 2022. Also on today's show, you'll hear from the player the Panthers are expected to select, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, along with other draft prospects Will Levis, a quarterback from Kentucky and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Ep. 124 features Larissa De Jesús Negrón. She is a multidisciplinary artist who yearns for introspection and finds self evaluation through her intimate and often otherworldly spaces and portraits. Her stylistically varied and neo-surreal imagery is linked to the artist's curiosity of the subconscious and psychoanalysis. Through her work, Larissa has a profound interest in healing and addressing her childhood and adult trauma. Her pieces give light to profound moments in her life where she's felt despair, shame, fear and also positive emotions like excitement, optimism and faith. These scenes are brought to the eyes of the viewer as a cathartic way to connect through shared experiences. Existential themes such as gender roles, the vitality of nature, using humor as a coping mechanism and the power of storytelling as a tool for healing are all present in her work. Larissa was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Throughout nineteen years, she lived in several municipalities such as Guaynabo, Trujillo Alto and Caguas. Her commitment to art making began as early as nine years old, where she excelled in the drawing classes her mother signed her up for. Larissa went on to study middle school and high school at Central High, the most well regarded specialized art school in Puerto Rico. Graduating with the highest honor the school has to offer, Larissa continued her education at The School of Plastic Arts in Old San Juan where she began majoring in Drawing and Painting. After two years, she transferred to Hunter College in NYC where she got her BFA degree with high honors in 2017. The artist is now based in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. This week on Hashtag History, we are discussing the Little Rock Nine. Little Rock Nine is the name given to the nine students that were the first Black students to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, following the Brown v. Board of Education decision which ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. When these children went to Central High for their first day of school in September of 1957, they were met by an angry mob that threw things at them, spit on them, screamed horrible things at them, and more. The Arkansas Governor even called in the National Guard to block the students from being able to enter the school. It wasn't until later that month that President Dwight D. Eisenhower engaged federal troops to get these nine students into the school by entering through a side door of the building to not draw the attention of the angry, racist mob. We of course know that this was not the end of their struggles and the horrid racism that they faced - and the bravery they exhibited - while attending this public school.
