Last week's launch of Season 6: Episode 1 generated more downloads than we'd received for quite some time & I want to thank you so much for warmly welcoming back the podcast in 2025 in the same week we celebrated its fifth anniversary. A few days ago, I uploaded a new film recommendation video in a supplemental series for patrons that I'm calling Watch With Jen: Bonus Recs & I'm keeping them unlocked to the public for a few months before they'll become strict subscriber exclusives. We've had a huge increase in subscribers to our Patreon at the free level & I hope that will continue & you'll consider supporting the show for as little as $1 per month, which covers our RSS hosting fees, research, equipment, & more. In this week's brand new installment, we're continuing the conversation we began last week that's devoted to the films of Los Angeles. Paying tribute to a beautiful city that I love & its wonderful spirited people, I'm hoping that these lively, funny, thoughtful chats about some of our favorite films that were shot & set within the city limits will bring a little joy after the devastating fires of early January. Clocking in at a little over 90 minutes, you will hear SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET author William Boyle on MULHOLLAND DR., film critic Courtney Howard on TROOP BEVERLY HILLS & SPEED, & author Nikki Dolson on TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. (Note: previously announced guest, author S.A. Cosby had a scheduling conflict & will be appearing on another installment soon instead.) I enjoyed all of these discussions immensely & tend to get a little rowdy with my friends (as longtime listeners have noticed) so we go everywhere from recalling our early David Lynch experiences to giving Shelley Long her due to wondering why I find the sequence in TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. where Willem Dafoe makes funny money so intensely erotic. It's a lot... in a good way (& please be aware that there are spoilers galore in that chat). It's wild, I lost track of how many episodes I uploaded by the end of 2024 because it was a very overwhelming time & in my head, I assumed that we'd be hitting the 250th episode of the podcast closer to summer. This week, I decided to sit down & do the math (twice) & realized that I was completely mistaken. I will actually be hitting the 250th episode of the show next week, which blows my mind. There would be no point in doing this if my generous, talented guests didn't share their time with me & people didn't listen so while this is a one-woman endeavor behind the scenes, its success is a group effort. Your support, enthusiasm, & involvement has kept it going so you're all vital & valued & I hope you'll stay tuned. It's time for our traditional, post-”Designing Women” season special episode! We're definitely planning to discuss season 7 after the holidays, but to tide you over, we're heading to Beverly Hills—Troop Beverly Hills, to be exact. If you haven't seen this 1989 gem starring Shelly Long in her peak, feathered-hair glory, you're in for a treat. This isn't just a movie—it's an adventure in over-the-top Scout uniforms, cookie sales drama, and a showdown with wilderness survival that's as hilarious as it is heartwarming. For us, it was a no-brainer: Carlene's Scout leader stint, our “Extra Sugar” on Girl Scouts, and our deep dive into Shelly Long's Cheers fame all screamed Troop Beverly Hills. So, if you're feeling nostalgic—or just need a good laugh between turkey leftovers and New Year's resolutions—join us. Grab some popcorn, snuggle up, and maybe consider bedazzling your own Scout sash. You know, for the vibes. We'll be back Designing Women-style after the New Year. Until then, happy holidays—and happy watching!
This week of RHOSLC hit hard. We ended the episode with a powerful conversation between Mary and Robert Jr. This was one of the most raw and real conversations we have had on housewives and are thankful that she shared this with all of us. It's been a tough season for Mary and she's not having any of the BS from the other women. "Goodbye, Meredith and Goodbye, Lisa" - Mary, probably. The Troop Beverly Hills outing had us playing catch up trying to figure out who was fighting with who and about what. Everyone had something to say and we aren't sure what landed. Heather felt that we needed to know about soaking, docking and jump humping this episode, not once but twice. Thanks for the education! Another great episode for this franchise. Season TWO Episode NINETEEN of the Your Story Our Fight® podcast welcomes Kellie Martin. Kellie began acting at the age of seven. She is most fondly remembered for playing Becca Thacher on the groundbreaking ABC family drama Life Goes On, for which she received an Emmy nomination. And, her portrayal of Lucy Knight, a precocious med student who met an untimely demise after two seasons on NBC's ER, haunts viewers to this day. Kellie has been a been a regular on numerous series including, The Guest Book, Army Wives, Mystery Woman, and on Hallmark's Hailey Dean, where she served as Executive Producer. Her television and feature film highlights include Troop Beverly Hills, A Goofy Movie, Malibu's Most Wanted, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, and Mad Men. She also served as leading lady for Hallmark's beloved holiday movies, The Christmas Ornament and Christmas in Montana as well as rom-com favorites, Smooch, I Married Who?, and Hello It's Me.In 1999, Kellie lost her nineteen year old sister, Heather, to lupus. So, Kellie took on a new role, one that she continues passionately to this day: national spokesperson for the Autoimmune Association. She works to raise awareness, lobbies Congress, speaks, and meets personally with patients and their families. Kellie is a Yale graduate with a degree in Art History. She co-authored a novel, Madam, which was published by Penguin in 2014. She's currently writing on a new novel. Most recently, Kellie has been working with her Life Goes On co-star, Chad Lowe and All American show runner, Nkechi Okoro Carroll to reboot Life Goes On with Warner Brothers. She just directed Mistletoe in Montana for Lifetime and has been recording a new podcast with Chad Lowe entitled The Big Break. She lives on a suburban farm in California with her husband, Keith, daughters, Maggie (15), Olivia (5) and a bunch of goats, pigs, and horses.
Troop Beverly Hills is a late 1980's comedy centering on a privileged housewife (Shelley Long) taking a position as the leader of her daughter's Wilderness Girls group. This is initially so she can demonstrate her resolve to her estranged husband (Craig T. Nelson), but she gradually bonds with her child (Jenny Lewis), forms connections with the other girls, and develops a rivalry with the Culver City troop run by the conniving Velda Plendor (Betty Thomas). Troop Beverly Hills received a critical drubbing and it bombed in theaters, but it built an appreciative cult audience among millennial girls due to constant broadcasts on basic cable throughout the 1990's. It is now often seen as a fun, campy time capsule of 80's fashion and unapologetic girliness. Ryan is joined by Sylvan, Cheryl, and Pete for an examination of this kitschy gem. Discussion topics include the film's approach to feminism, class struggle, and story structure. Ryan, ever the killjoy, points out the sobering parallels between the movie's references to the Marcos dictatorship and the recent (as of the recording) election of Bongbong Marcos. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support

In Part 2 of his Holiday Gift Guide series, Dennis is joined via Zoom by four different creative entrepreneurs who have products that are perfect for holiday gift giving. First up is film professor Andy Scahill, the founder of Cinema for Sodomites, an interactive cult movie screening series and a merch line inspired by such gay favorites as Batman Returns, Death Becomes Her and Steel Magnolias. Andy talks about why he decided to launch the series and merch line, the Troop Beverly Hills screening where people got to design their own gay merit badges and confirms that yes, the Cinema for Sodomites logo does kind of look like a butthole. Next up is James Carroll the co-author/designer of The Showgirls Activity Book, which is a book of word searches, mazes and images for coloring inspired by the iconic film Showgirls. James recalls discovering the movie as a teen in South Africa, makes the case for why Nomi Malone is a feminist hero and reveals the plans he has for future books inspired by Clueless, Mean Girls and The Birdcage. Paul Ybarra AKA Paul Straightjacket is next and shares the origin story behind his creative brainchild, The Straightjacket Tarot, a deck of tarot cards featuring self-portraits of Paul wearing his favorite garment in the world; a straight jacket. Paul talks about the origins of his straightjacket fetish and explains why he decided to share it with the world in this unique way and he also recalls the time he got stuck in a straight jacket alone for eight hours and thought he might have to call 9-1-1 with his mouth. The episode's final guest is Andrew Harper, a visual artist and choreographer based in Georgia who, during the pandemic, launched Reissued, an online store that features original clothing designs, one-of-a-kind purses and a set of notecards featuring Andrew's original works of art. Andrew also talks about how he became “thrift store influencer” and sings the praises of the skimpy retro running shorts he rocks on Instagram. And all four guests talk about how creating their business and getting their stuff out in the world has enriched their lives in unexpected ways. Opinions are split on Hugo Largo's second (and apparently final) album Mettle, while Cowboy Junkies' breakout album The Trinity Session is rightly fêted. One To Watch gets it right once more with a profile of a 21-year-old pre-When Harry Met Sally Harry Connick Jr. Then it's on to the features: Sing star Peter Dobson impresses Catherine; Christina remains unimpressed by Anthrax. Scot and Jeff discuss Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis with Helaine Olen. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Helaine Olen. Helaine is an opinion writer at the Washington Post. Find her on Twitter at @HelaineOlen. Helaine's Music Pick: Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis So it turns out Hannah Nefler from Troop Beverly Hills and Ronnie Pinsky from “Salute Your Shorts” aren't played by just talented child actors after all. Those actors, Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, went on to form one-half of Rilo Kiley and were responsible for writing the music and lyrics for the band. And it all started out because actor/comedian Dave Foley offered to pick up the tab for recording a group of demos. While Rilo Kiley never sold a ton of albums, they became a successful and artistically interesting group that made waves in the indie rock community. Jenny Lewis began her solo career before her band officially ended its run, with the superb Rabbit Fur Coat, released in 2006. Rilo Kiley produced one more “grab for the brass ring” album, titled Under the Blacklight. By that point, though, it was clear Lewis' talent meant more solo albums were on the way. Rooted in a California/Laurel Canyon sound, Lewis rarey repeats herself on record. Her voice has matured over the years to become a true musical weapon. Many of her friends, like Beck, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Rice, Benmont Tench, and others pop up on songs here and there. Whether you're new to this music or simply taking a deeper dive, be more adventurous with us and listen to the Political Beats take on Rilo Kiley & Jenny Lewis.
