Look kindly upon us, dear listener, as we attempt to do a podcast from the remains of 221B Con 2025 in Atlanta. One of our pups is missing, but we dragged in a host of other Sherlockians to chat about what went on, Sherlock & Co., and more. It's disorganized, produced on the fly, and either the worst or best episode in a while. Good luck!
“able to evolve from their own inner consciousness” [STUD] Now in its 12th year, 221B Con has become a mainstay of annual Sherlockian events, drawing people from all over the world to Atlanta every April. It was founded as a response to Sherlock on BBC, but has expanded beyond that to include the original stories as well as all forms of media. Last year, the founders announced that this year would be the final 221B Con. As we narrow in on that date, regular attendee and volunteer Johanna Draper Carlson isn't convinced that has to be the case. But the future isn't quite clear at this point. We talk with Johanna about what's changed over the years, how it compares to other major "Cons," what to expect in April 2025, and what she hopes the future will bring. We have some Sherlockian society events we share in "The Learned Societies" segment, Madeline Quiñones tells us about another Sherlock Holmes podcast in "A Chance of Listening," and the Canonical Couplet quiz tests your Sherlock Holmes knowledge with something from the IHOSE vaults for one lucky winner. Buckle up for a full hour of bull pup chatter, ranging from a new waffle based Sherlockian society, through artists we saw at 221B Con, to the usual goings on about the second part of "Silver Blaze" from Sherlock & Co. The game is afoot . . . well unless you're reading bull pup Buck's copy of A Study in Scarlet. You'll see.
While some podcasts use a venue like 221B Con to get some good content, The Watsonian Weekly once again just gets random audio that somehow is just a messy version of our usual show. But we got an episode out!

In which we share recordings of drunken shenanigans at the recent 221B Con in Atlanta, GA. Warning for lots of inebriation and laughter as we talk about con and attempt to record a few Drunk Fandom of Interest segments, with varying degrees of success.
It may sound like bull pup Maddie stayed at 221B Con, like bull pup Buck was affected forever by someone he met there, and that robots are replacing podcast cast members, but have no fear! We'll see if we can fix all that by next week's podcast, so enjoy this very special episode of the Watsonian Weekly. (But aren't they all?)
Other podcasts do some of their best recording at cons. Many have done great episodes from 221B Con in Atlanta. The Watsonian Weekly, however, dares to find members of the John H. Watson Society at their most un-recordable and call it a podcast! Cover the ears of any impressionable youth nearby, because no one needs the misery and suffering found herein. John H. Watson would . . . well, he wouldn't listen because they didn't have podcasts on wax cylinders, now, did they?
What does a Dutch writer have to do with Watson's biggest date night? This episode wanders where no Watsonian podcast has wandered before, since it's the week before 221B Con and we're just a bit mad with excitement. And there's Watson news. So listen!

In a double-host, double-sized episode, bull pups Calder and Maddy review as much of 221B Con 2022 as they could remember -- though there's always more con than anything less than a full team could cover. Also, Watson and exit-ramp restaurants.
It's the week before 221B Con, and that's where the attention is focused this week. How much Watson can we expect at the con? Let's look!
In which we explore our new episode format and share our excitement for the upcoming 221B Con in Atlanta. Who's ready for con?

It's long and it's live and there is a special guest we've been trying to get on the show for two years! (But he's very shy, so don't expect too much.) Bullpup Calder mixes the drink Watson invented, Bullpup Mopsy returns with Word of the Week, Bullpups Dawson and Maddie both do a Watson of the Week, and Bullpup Destiny joins in a game of Four Watsons. We're a couple of bullpups shy of a full house, and we had to miss a 221B Con panel to record it, but one hundred episodes!!!!
Yes, it's been a decade since the airing of BBC Sherlock's "A Study in Pink." And while time has absolutely no meaning in the age of COVID, it has been an extraordinary ten years of memories thanks to the little British show that surprised the world. So we take some time to talk about our memories of the Sherlock fandom and the crazy trajectory of the show, some of your memories, and revisiting the first 221B Con and SherlockeDCC at San Diego Comic Con. Regardless of how you feel about the show, it undoubtedly had an astounding effect on not only the Sherlockian world but on fandom and pop culture as a whole. And so in honor of BBC Sherlock, we present an hour and a half of nostalgia. Enjoy!

“an event of extreme importance” [SIGN] What do two energetic and passionate Sherlock Holmes fans do when they're sparked by a new Sherlock Holmes manifestation? Why, they establish a major event! That's exactly what Heather Holloway and Crystal Noll did, after discovering they each enjoyed Sherlock Holmes, albeit from two very different origins. Throw in the Canon, the BBC, Waffle House, and ground central for fan conventions, and you've got 221B Con. As you'll hear, Heather and Crystal went about things all wrong. But they were successful beyond their wildest imagination, and now 221B Con is in its seventh year. Listen to how this fascinating and multifaceted event came together and what you can expect if you attend the next 221B Con in Atlanta from April 5-7, 2019. We also have another installment of "As We Go to Press" with Mattias Boström, co-editor of the Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle in the Newspapers series. We've received some listener voicemail, and of course we've got the latest Canonical Couplet. See if you can figure out the story we're referring to, and you might win a prize. BSB Amy and our good friend Chris Zordan discuss everything Irene Adler with a wonderful audience at 221B Con. Who was Irene Adler? Why is she so important to fans even though she only appears in one story? Taking on this larger than life adventuress that bested Sherlock Holmes is something many adaptations (all adaptations?) get kinda wrong. Why is that? They unpack the recent adaptations and their portrayals of Adler, from Rachel McAdam's UPS Service Adler for Moriarty to in Elementary where... spoiler alert... she is Moriarty to Cutty from House, MD.
Alan King prepares to go to 221B Con, meets an old adversary there, and comes back . . . changed.

We're back! And with a live recorded podcast at 221B Con, our favorite Sherlock Holmes convention. This episode is with Martin Powell, whom you may know from comics or Disney or marvel or children's books or ... y'know... Sherlock Holmes! We chat with him about how Holmes keeps coming back into his life, his amazing friendship with Ray Bradbury, Dracula and Holmes, and we keep mentioning nuns for some reason...
"we appeared to be two theatre-goers" [CHAS] Tim Greer, BSI ("The Ragged Shaw") joins us for this episode in which we explore some of the intricacies and challenges of producing Sherlock Holmes on the stage. For anyone who's been to a major gathering of Sherlockians in the last few years, Tim should be no stranger. From his home base in Memphis to 221B Con and the BSI Weekend, he's been seen in exquisite and faithful costumes inspired by William Gillette, Jeremy Brett an Basil Rathbone. Tim is an award winning Sherlockian, having been honored with the Beacon Award from the Beacon Society and the Morley Montgomery Award for the best article in the Baker Street Journal in 2014. Tim's specialty is the theater, and he shares his inspiration with us, ranging from the difficulty in physically portraying a cerebral character to the proper staging and set decoration of the sitting rooms at 221B Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes has been presented on stage in one way or another for 125 years and there continue to be many interpretations and inspirations ahead. We love all of our audiences and look forward to entertaining everyone, but some audiences have a special place in our hearts. 221B Con is one of them. Not least because we pack the house when we go there! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Proof[/caption] It's such a ton of fun playing to these dedicated Sherlock Holmes fans. An iconic character, portayed by a variety of actors in a variety of ways, but without having to deal with all the time travel and blue police boxes. For this performance, we commissioned new scripts from Sketch MacQuinor. One was Commonplaces, by Naomi Novik (stay tuned to see if we can run that one on the podcast), and the other was The Game is Afoot: Game the Fourth - The Ultimate Ultimatum. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Pictured: A ton of fun[/caption] We also had a special guest for the show, David Nellist! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Proof![/caption] David was such a good sport about this. We only asked him if he'd appear on stage with us a few hours before show time, but he agreed to do it readily. Right up until the show itself, we were figuring out the logistics of when to have him approach the stage, how to introduce him, and going over his role. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] And then we gave him a non-speaking part and pushed his character off a cliff.[/caption] And the fans LOVED it! Next year we hope to have him back in a more substantial (and audible) role, but for this year he honored us by appearing on stage, however briefly, and gamely played along with the joke. Thank you, David! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Pictured: Our biggest fan[/caption] Thank you for listening! If you're enjoying the podcast, be sure to support us on Patreon! Asylum's Sherlock Holmes is the best Sherlock Holmes adaptation of all time. I mean, what other Holmes film has him battling a mechanical dragon while in a dirigible/hot air balloon with a gatling gun?! NONE! We lucky ladies got to sit down and chat with Ben Syder, who played the amazing Sherlock Holmes in this masterpiece of cinema at 221B Con this year. Learn all about how he had NO idea what Asylum was, missing scenes, and how someone thought he was Robert Downey Jr. Huge thanks to Ben for chatting with us and to 221B Con for having us back!

Spanning centuries of storytelling, the connections between 221B Baker Street as imagined by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the universe of Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry cannot be ignored! Trekkies and Sherlockians own a very great deal in common, and in this special panelist episode that took place at 221B Con in Atlanta, 2014, we'll nerd out over the huge overlap in our Venn diagrams.Lyndsay Faye is one of several Babes who had loved all things Trek for almost as long as she's loved all things Holmes. Join her along with Stephen Seitz (who is a writer, editor, film critic, author of Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula, and the host of Book Talk) and Lynne Stephens (entertainment journalist and co-creator of one of the very first video mashups of footage from the original Star Trek: The Motion Picture as edited into a musical comedy, which resulted in her being invited to the set of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan by Roddenberry himself). If you harbor any interest in Spock's ancient human consulting detective ancestor, or in Data's turn with a deerstalker, tune in to this special episode!

In this episode of Hope of All Trades, I'm joined by the creators of 221B Con! This is my personal favorite convention. 221B Con is a convention that covers everything Sherlock Holmes. From the original Arthur Conan Doyle canon, to the Robert Downy Jr. films, and the BBC show, there will be something there for you! They even cover rare takes on Holmes like the silent movie era! One of the big hits at the con are the panels on shows like Elementary, House, Psych, and so much more! They also make a point to cover fandoms that are tied in with the creators and actors. There will be Doctor Who, The Hobbit, Star Trek, Cabin Pressure, and others that you will have to attend to find out! There will even be a Welcome To Night Vale panel! We discuss the events like the Tea Party, the charity auction for the Beacon Society, and a weekend long game battling ships against ships! Most importantly... we'll tell you how to get free wifi at the con. This is not one to miss! Find out more about 221B Con at their website, facebook, twitter, and tumblr! Trust me.
