How can you take your guest episodes beyond a basic Q&A? When you think of a podcast, what comes to mind? If “a mic and two people talking” is your first thought, you're in good company, but in this episode, Mary encourages you to expand that definition. Your show is about so much more than the interview. That one-time guest isn't the person who keeps listeners coming back week after week—that's you! So, how can you use strategic guest selection to leverage the values, interests, and timing of both the host and the listener? When you bring on not just the most popular guest but the one who is truly the best fit, you gain a stronger episode, a more dedicated listener base, and a more cohesive show. Get picky about your guest picks with these helpful tips: Why this month's most sought-after podcast guest might not be the right choice for you Why platforms that match guests to podcasts aren't ideal How your podcast values play into your guest selection every time How to tweak your publishing schedule to get the most out of every episode. Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: When you think of a podcast these days, what do you envision? Like, what is a podcast? Most people I talk to tend to say that if there's a microphone and there's two people talking, you've got a podcast. So, yes, that could be a good barometer. Like, a lot of the celebrity type podcasts are going that route. But podcasting is more than just interviews. I mean, this episode alone is a solo episode where there is no guest, but it still is a podcast. With the exceptional growth in podcasting since the pandemic, when we were all at home listening away, connecting to other humans through our earbuds and headphones, we've seen this interview style show get replicated over and over and over again. And I see the allure you want to emulate your favourite thought leaders. It's an easy route to get started, and we want to have a connection with someone. So an interview style show is definitely the way to go. However, what if we can make interview style shows better? What if it's more than just two people talking? On this episode, we're going to take a look at what we can be doing differently for our podcast and how being choosy about your guests will actually make a better show for you as the creator and for your listeners. This is episode number 94 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > [MUSIC ENDS]
Do you want to know the biggest lie in podcasting? I've been thinking about this episode for many years, and it's something I try to share with every podcaster I work with and meet. The biggest lie in podcasting is that it's easy, but way too many of us make it too hard. In this episode I'm going to expose the lies you've likely been told about podcasting and how you can reclaim the truth for yourself. We'll talk about everything from podcasting equipment and production to monetization to why your podcast marketing strategy isn't working.
I have a question for you: why do people listen to your podcast? It's such a simple question, but it's really hard to answer. That's because it's not a fill in the blank question, it's not black and white, there's a hundred different correct answers for why someone might listen to your podcast. But in this episode, I'm going to help you figure out the most important one.

Kath makes a compelling case for converting your company newsletter into an engaging mini podcast—a modern, inclusive, and multitasking-friendly way to communicate with your audience. She highlights the limitations of newsletters, such as crammed text and low engagement, and explains how audio newsletters can reach clients who may have disengaged or never read your emails. Welcome to this episode of How to Podcast for Business an Introduction. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Today's episode is all about planning. Being prepared when starting or launching your podcast is key. It's like anything else you do in business. Rarely would you just dive in without some preparation we've already discussed having a clear idea of exactly what your business podcast is about, but what does it aim to solve for your listener? Will it make their business better? Will it solve a pain point? How is it different to other podcasts on the same subject? Is yours plain English and easy to understand. Is it actionable information? Is it broken into bite-sized, easy, digestible stages for your listener? Don't lose sight of the aim. I want to help people plan and produce their own business. Podcast, for example, think about podcasts you like and why you like, Are they short and sweet? Are they in depth information?Do they educate and inform? Do they give away lots of advice and tips? Are they solo pods or interview style? looking in depth and listening to what you like will make it easier for you. When you're planning your own podcast, follow the format of what you listen to if you like. Think about their length, their guest, their tone of voice, what did you take away from listening to it? Was it a value? These are the things your listener will be thinking about when choosing your podcast or indeed whether to subscribe once they've listened to it. In previous episodes, we've discussed your avatar, the perfect listener for your podcast, your target market, for your business. Essentially, let's revisit it in the planning pre-production stage. So that we can be clear who you are talking to.This is key. When planning each episode, always have that avatar at the top of your mind, you are speaking to them. Think about your business marketing strategy. Who do you want to speak to, who you are already speaking to. They could be already in your database of current clients. What do they struggle with? Could you help them to solve a problem?Remember that if you have a database of current or previous clients, these are your potential listeners and buyers of your product or service. So let's be clear on who you're speaking to, what you are telling them, and why you should now have planned the what and why.In the next episode, we talk about howSend us a textSupport the showProduced by https://voiceitpodcastagency.co.uk

How do you create clear and open communication with your podcast guest? Every podcast—and every episode, for that matter—has a lot of moving parts. As podcast hosts, we know that in order to stay organized, we need systems in place. But those systems should extend to more than your recording and editing tools, and how you publish your episode. You need systems in place for your guest interactions, too. An unfortunate experience shared by a fellow podcast host prompts Mary to explore podcast etiquette and guest/host interactions. She outlines how to approach this important relationship before, during, and after the interview to make sure you're setting the clearest possible expectations. Consider how you could fine-tune your own podcast guest etiquette: Ace the early interaction that will set you up for that “easy yes” Keep your guest in the know as the interview begins Make sure you're both set up for success once the episode airs Red flags to watch out for when you're the guest! I don't want to offer you another recap roundup or year in review episode. The other thing I'm not offering you is a “new year, new you” episode. But I DID want to come on here and have a podcast conversation with you because things are changing. And I'm actually pretty excited for 2024! When you started your podcast, you had an idea in mind, probably, of what you wanted to offer to your audience, a problem that you were solving or something that you wanted to speak to. And maybe you've been chugging along and you felt great and it was working and it was making a difference and people were joining your podcast and your audience was growing and then something happened. You became bored or disillusioned with your show, or your numbers kind of stagnated or maybe even dropped. But it's not that you suddenly are doing something wrong – it's that your community, your audience is also changing. And so what it is that they need now and how can you shift to meet that need? This episode was originally recorded as a live stream and has been edited for this feed. We've selected our next episode to remaster and you're in for a treat! Why? Because this episode is all about podcasting – that is, the actual business of podcasting. It features Doug Sandler, someone we refer to as a podcasting “O.G.” Not only is the co-host of the wildly successful Nice Guys on Business podcast, but he also is the co-founder of Turnkey Podcast Productions. Like entrepreneurship, podcasting is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, commitment, and consistency – all of which is challenging since it takes a while before you know who your audience is. In this remastered episode, Doug reveals the business infrastructure required for a successful podcast. He also shares the types of podcasts that tend to do really well and how you can monetize them. Learn the significance of knowing your market, offer, and message and how that winning combination can make podcasting a viable revenue source for you or your business.
Do you audit your podcast? What are your podcast KPIs? And how do you measure the growth of your show month over month, year over year? In this episode of As It Relates to Podcasting, we cover the importance of podcast auditing and share effective methods for assessing content quality and the performance of your show. I talk about why we should be auditing our shows, the aspects to focus on during the process, like sound quality, tone, and content impact. I also highlight the importance of keeping track of listener demographics and engagement, feedback, social media interactions, Google analytics for websites, and maintaining consistency. I explain why it's important to hear and receive input from listeners, tracking performance over time, surveying competitors, analyzing interview guests' impact, and monitoring episode-specific calls to action. Ultimately, all of these efforts should align with your Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure continued growth and lasting impact. I share the ‘how' in this conversation. How well do you know your ideal podcast listener? If you can figure out—like, really, deeply identify—the purpose of your podcast and who you're creating it for, you'll discover the huge impact this can have on your show's success; it helps make every part super cohesive, from selecting your guests and topics, to reaching your ideal audience, to achieving personal growth along the way. Multi-hyphenate entrepreneur Shobna Kannusamy has experienced all these benefits firsthand while creating her podcast, Colour Me Brave, where she amplifies the voices of women of colour through conversations that dive into their diverse experiences with identity, culture, and connection. In this episode, Shobna explains how getting really deep into determining her show's purpose has fostered the safe space she set out to establish for the women she speaks with, her podcast listeners, and herself. She shares her experience of building out a super tangible, relatable, and complex ideal listener and the ways this has helped her leave the fear of judgment behind to focus on authenticity and impact in her newest passion project. Consider how your own identity and culture influence your show as we explore: The impact your values and personal experiences have on your podcast voice How creating a strong ideal listener profile is directly connected to a stronger podcast and audience Navigating your fears and expectations around creating your show Why you can stop worrying so much about how many people are listening Links worth mentioning from the episode: Shobna's podcast, Colour Me Brave - https://www.soirette.com/podcast Food Network's Wall of Bakers - https://www.foodnetwork.ca/article/wall-of-bakers-meet-the-cast/ Mary's Ideal Listener workbook - https://organizedsound.ca/ideallistener Engage with Shobna: Website: https://www.soirette.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/soirette.coaching/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shobnakannusamy Connect with Mary! You want action? You better ask for action. And you better ask right! I'm talking about the keys to dropping an effective call to action in your podcast. You know, it's surprising how often I come across podcasters who either skip or mess up the call to action in their shows. So, let's fix that! I've talked about the importance of the Call to Action before but today, I'm arming you with the tools you need to make your CTAs more effective. There are three critical components to include in every CTA: Why, What, and How. First up is the "Why." Don't underestimate the power of this part. If you want your listeners to take action, you must tell them why. What's in it for them? Remember, it's not about you; it's about what benefits they'll get. If they understand the value they'll gain, they're more likely to act. Next comes the "What." Never assume your audience knows what action to take. Be crystal clear about the specific action you want them to perform – whether it's visiting your website, subscribing, downloading, or anything else. And finally, we have the "How." This is about going the extra mile to explain precisely how to take that action. A simple "download" won't cut it. Be detailed and make sure they know the exact steps to follow. When you provide clarity, your listeners will feel taken care of, and that's what we all want, right? Now, here's a little secret: your call to action isn't always about sales. Sure, it could be, but it doesn't have to be every time. Match your CTA to the content of your episode, and you'll see better results. Context is key! When you listen to this episode, pay attention to how seamlessly I weave my CTAs into the conversation. They are relevant to what I'm discussing, making them feel like natural next steps for you, the listener. No pushiness, no awkwardness – just logical next moves. So, here's your challenge: incorporate CTAs where they make sense in your episodes. Tell your audience why they should act, what action to take, and exactly how to take that acton. I guarantee you'll see way more action! Speaking of action, a recent client praised me for being the only podcast coach who offered actionable advice during a free coaching call. He loved that I was all about action. If you love action too, and you're ready to elevate your podcast, visit podcastperformancecoach.com and click the big orange button to book your free 15-minute coaching call with me. The summer slowdown... it's the PERFECT time to do a bit of business development that is actually FUN! This year, Lauren Ramsey of Betsy Bash and I decided to team up to help you with this conundrum of feeling like you are constantly on the content hamster wheel generating podcast episodes, generating social media posts, making TikToks and reels, trying to figure out what the heck to put on YouTube, trying to figure out what the algorithms want... Why is it important to sync your content across your podcast, social, and other marketing channels? Lauren says, "Your audience is seeing all of those channels. So if they don't match, if they're not aligned, people can feel that. Whether or not they realize it consciously, they are realizing it subconsciously and it negatively impacts their perception of your brand. Which is really hard to get rid of later. Right? Like how do you change someone's subconscious?" Your social media exists to pull people towards your brand. It's there to create a community around your brand. So if it's not aligned with what your podcast marketing goals are, that's a huge miss. Not to mention... you're burning a lot of time, energy, and resources. So what's a podcast creator to do? Welcome to a crossover episode of a different sort. But first: How are you doing? No, really? I ask because May is Mental Health Awareness Month. So many of us, myself included, struggle to articulate how “off” we feel right now, a cruel joke given that the good folks and orgs behind this month's observance urge us to check in with our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. I'll go first (yikes!): The only way I can describe my current state of mind is fragile. Can you relate? If you're an entrepreneur, an educator, a corporate employee, a HUMAN, I bet you can. You're okay. I acknowledge and honor your struggle. This episode isn't about mental health per se. It's about creating a secure and attentive environment for guests to feel supported, understood, and willing to engage in vulnerable conversations. The high schoolers behind Power Your Story, my student mentee podcast, beautifully illustrate my point. Their cohort-led interview with Peer Support Specialist and Mental Health Advocate Ashley Scott showcases subtle practices anyone can incorporate to become a better listener and, thus, better podcast host. Co-hosts Elvis, Emerie, Jules, and Alejandro facilitate a space where Ashley feels supported to speak more candidly about her mental health. That safety is mutual: Ashley's comfort leads the students to go off-script, to ask more meaningful follow-up questions, and to add personal observations that make for a more engaging conversation. You can talk about podcasting for marketing, sales, audience growth, or business all day, but this genuine exchange is why I love podcasting; this is where your audience will find value. The last few episodes of Podcast Envy have focused on hosting and content strategies guaranteed to make your show a repeat listen. By creating a safe, intimate container where you and your guests can discuss important topics, you're signaling to the audience that they, too, are seen and heard. I appreciate that not everyone's format is conducive to exploring tough conversations. Still, anyone can follow the Power Your Story lead, regardless of your show's POVs, by remaining present and reflecting back to each guest. For Mental Health Awareness, check out all of this month's related Power Your Story episodes: Insomnia & Dreaming of a Better Night's Sleep with Leonardo & Dewayne; The Journey to Self-Empowerment: Mindfulness,Law of Attraction with Hysan & May; Heavy Metal & Mental Health with Justin Bowling by Leslie, Carlos, Essence & ChuYing and produced by Aldo; Advocating for Mental Health & Peer Support with Ashley Scott RECOMMENDED LISTENING PEP106 - Awesome Podcast Host Featuring Karen Yates Power Your Story Refresh Your Podcast (Don't fade out!) Psst. Want to know the secret to becoming a better podcast host? It's not your equipment. Relationships are everything. Research indicates that while folks may listen to podcasts for entertainment and information, they remain loyal to a specific show because of its host. Karen Yates is definitely that host. She's a producer, host, and the mastermind behind Wild & Sublime, the super-successful, highly binge-able podcast about sex for everyone, no matter their preferences, orientation, or relationship style. Here are a few of my fave hosting tips: Get into the rhythm. Act natural, strategically. Craft different but authentic voice personas. Skip the pre-show cheese stick. Seriously. But wait, there's more, including Karen's number one tip for better hosting, but you'll have to check out the episode to get it! But how do you level up so that your podcast shines? We also cover: Insight into Karen's pre-production, production, and post-production processes when creating Wild & Sublime How she sets her guest up for success each and every time Facilitating smooth, engaging panel discussions (Karen's signature episode style) Voice acting and self-care tips How to work with your editor to create a system of communication that helps them read your mind, even if that editor is yourself How I think about my relationship with YOU! *** Get the full show notes including links to shows and episodes referenced at: https://www.podcastenvy.com I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions! Why Do You Podcast? And How Does It Help in the Wealth/Law Space? Why do I do it? What's involved? How does it interact with your career? Should I do it? (YES- At least try it) How did you get started and how much does it cost? Do you make money on it? Is your ROI on the show different? Do you use it for research or marketing (or both)? Do you enjoy it? Two Advisor Podcast Experiences I thought I would have BRENT NELSON on the show, so we could trade our two podcasting experiences. Brent is the host of the successful and entertaining Wealth and Law podcast and heavily involved in the wealth management space. This is his second visit to the Wealth Actually Podcast. He is an ACTEC Fellow and a partner of the Tucson-based RIMON LAW FIRM and focuses on international and domestic estate planning. For those curious about the world of podcasting and where it can fit into your business or practice, this should be a useful listen from two people who have done it. I liked the idea of two people, who have demanding day jobs, describing their podcasting experiences and how they make it fit within a demanding schedule- Why we did it? Why do we continue to do it? What do you listen to and what did you take for inspiration? What's your process? What started off poorly and has gotten better? How much time / resources / workflow does it take? What functions do you keep / what do you delegate? How do you measure success? How do you "monetize?" Business model? Advertising? What do you wish you had? Struggles with audience building- Weird stuff like music / disclaimers? The Wealth and Law Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3bQK3jsLsacNqryQKQuSRG I am also adding this excellent primer on "HOW TO PODCAST" from my friend, Jason Cilo of Meeting House Productions- it goes into some depth on the "Who, What, Where, When, Why and How" of the process from a person who does an extremely professional job on his show. It is well researched and serves as an ode to his passions in the TV and Film world. Well worth the listen: FULL CAST AND CREW: HOW TO PODCAST https://open.spotify.com/show/1UTZzSo2oPXBxn94UrIjO1 Some of the Podcasts Mentioned: Errol Louis ("You Decide" NYS Political Podcast), Various Horror Podcasts, John Keim (Washington Commanders Beat Writer for ESPN), Full Cast and Crew, Infinite Loops, Penny Philips, Griffin Bridgers, Morgan Housel, Ritholtz Wealth's stable of podcasts, Invest Like the Best with Patrick O'Shaughnessy https://www.amazon.com/Wealth-Actually-Intelligent-Decision-Making-1-ebook/dp/B07FPQJJQT/ "This podcast is for educational and entertainment purposes.
