Her rise in Australian distance running began with victories in road and cross-country races, which led to her brave debut at the Marathon distance in Nagoya, Japan in March 2012. Jessica's performance in Japan was the fastest ever debut Marathon by an Australian woman at the time. She went on to represent Australia at the 2012 London Olympic Games, placing 39th, and then claimed the bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.Injuries in 2014 and 2016 helped Jessica to train smarter and become a more resilient athlete, and she went on to finish 9th at the World Championships in London in 2017, the highest ever placing by an Australian female in a World Championship Marathon. She won her second consecutive Commonwealth Games Bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and in 2021, she set her current Marathon personal best of 2:25:15 in Perth, qualifying her for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she achieved her long-standing dream of becoming a Commonwealth gold medallist.Off the track, Jessica draws upon her sporting experiences and physiotherapy knowledge to encourage others to enjoy active and healthy lifestyles. Jessica attributes her success to her love of running, determination, balanced approach to training, and the strong support she receives from family, friends, her coach Adam Didyk, and training group Team Tempo. She is passionate about helping to keep the momentum going for women in sport.Upgrade your clinical skills and become a patreon:https://patreon.com/SportsMedicineProject?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkSign up for a free weekly Research review about topics related to Sports Medicine straight to your email: https://gmail.us14.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=c3dca95db0740390c605a128e&id=b41f1293caRead through our already written blogs:https://achievepodiatry.com.au

This episode of Running Things we chat with one of Australia’s most accomplished distance runners: the incredible Jess Stenson. Jess is based in Adelaide as part of Team Tempo, under the tutelage of Adam Didyk. Jess has been to two Olympics, competing in the marathon. We talk about Jess’s return to competition in 2020 after giving birth to her first child, a son named Billy, in late 2019. Jess has been racing in Adelaide for the last few months across cross country, a 10k road race, and a recent half marathon victory. Jess talks about the road back to training and racing from having her son, and where she went for advice.Of particular interest is Jess’s marathon PB – 2:25:59 set in the Toronto Marathon in late 2018. Jess ran this race in a traditional racing shoe – without a carbon plate. With the indisputable benefit marathoners are now seeing in carbon shoes, how does Jess’ PR stack up in ‘modern times’?Jess also talks about trying to make her third Olympics team and her plans to race a marathon in the first half of 2021.LinksWatch Running Things on YouTubeJess Stenson InstagramTeam Tempo InstagramJess Stenson’s websiteRiley Wolff on InstagramTempo Journal on Instagramtempojournal.com
