Today, Kat speaks with Nathan, a chemistry teacher from York, about his inspiring journey from unhealthy habits and self-doubt to running marathons and transforming his life through the power of routine. Nathan shares how small, consistent changes in diet, exercise, and mindset helped him overcome barriers, improve his well-being, and inspire those around him. During the episode, he shares dozens of practical tips on kick-starting your transformation, staying motivated, understanding what foods are truly healthy and incorporating them into your diet. KEY TAKEAWAYS Try getting up early. For, Nathan, that one change made developing the positive habits he needed to complete his transformation, far easier. Learn about nutrition. Acquiring that knowledge, a little bit each day, doesn´t take long. You soon learn to recognise junk food and hidden calories so you can avoid eating them. Learn to cook and teach your kids too. When you do, you regain full awareness and control of what is going into your body. Meal prepping makes it much easier to eat healthily. At first cooking for a couple of hours one day a week will feel hard. But it actually saves you time, reduces stress, your food bills and the temptation to eat junk. Running for both Kat and Nathan has been life changing and provides the exercise they need. Yet, both of them hated running. Until, that is, they tried a different approach that made it easy. That approach is shared during the episode. BEST MOMENTS "He dreaded ever seeing anybody that he knew, because he felt so uncomfortable in his skin." “It's not difficult to be in a calorie deficit, but it's very easy not to be. “ "It comes down to two things - what you put in your body and how much you move.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://boldbeanco.com Previous episodes mentioned in this episode – https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-positive-habits-podcast/id1754112459 https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/brutal-honesty-you-need-breaking-free-with-jay-alderton/id1754112459 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Miracle-Morning-Updated-Expanded-Transform-ebook/dp/B0CJ6N7CK9 ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. Send us a textWhat happens when a devastating diagnosis becomes the catalyst for a complete life transformation? Meet Irene Pasternak, whose journey from an early Alzheimer's diagnosis to becoming a marathon runner reveals the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when we refuse to accept limitation. At 65, Irene received news that would stop most people in their tracks: test results showing an 86% chance of full dementia within three years. Instead of retreating, she embarked on a running journey that would transform both her brain health and her entire approach to living.Irene shares how she discovered "tourist running" – an approach that combines exploration with exercise as she runs as far as possible in new directions before taking public transport home. This creative method helped her progress from barely managing a mile to completing half marathons in less than a year. Most remarkably, her brain scans now show amyloid plaque levels dropping from 76 to below 12 – under the clinical significance threshold – suggesting her treatment and lifestyle changes have dramatically altered her prognosis.Beyond running, Irene reveals her work as a Feldenkrais practitioner helping people overcome movement limitations, and how she leads summer backpacking trips with llamas for people with Parkinson's disease. Her approach to movement as playful exploration rather than rigid exercise offers valuable insights for runners of any age. The conversation weaves through topics of neuroplasticity, resilience, and finding purpose after diagnosis – including how she now treasures time with her young granddaughter, creating memories she once feared would be impossible.Whether you're a runner seeking fresh perspective, someone facing health challenges, or simply in need of inspiration, Irene's story reminds us that sometimes our greatest adventures begin precisely when we think our stories are ending. In this episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, Coach Chris Knighton discusses the vital role of confidence in racing, emphasizing that mental strength can be even more important than physical training. Without a strong mindset, even the best training may fall short on race day. His upcoming course, Mental Skills for Marathon Runners, explores key topics such as setting motivating goals, understanding the purpose of training sessions, planning a long-term running career, developing race confidence, and mastering race visualization. By focusing on these mental strategies, runners can build resilience, trust their preparation, and approach races with confidence and composure. We are now on YOUTUBE:Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast Discount Codes for Runners: https://www.runswag.com· Our website: www.marathonrunningpodcast.com · Our Instagram: @runningpodcast· Our Amazon Storefront: Amazon Storefront· Join our Facebook group: SpeedStriders Facebook Group· Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast

This week's show brought to you by: Qualia Senolytic As a masters runner, I am always on the lookout to prevent (or at least slow down) many of the common performance declines that happen with age. Qualia Senolytic is designed to selectively target and eliminate damaged or dysfunctional cells in the body, which are called senescent cells. By removing these cells, senolytics aim to rejuvenate tissues, reduce inflammation, and reverse some aspects of aging. Early research has shown senolytics can… Lead to a reduction in systemic inflammation Improve vascular function by reducing senescent cell burden in the arteries. Enhance muscle regeneration while also increasing exercise capacity and decreasing recovery time Lead to significant improvements in joint health Ready to resist aging at the cellular level? Try Qualia Senolytic and use the code RTTT15 to save 15% off any purchase. MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Check out the research and the results for yourself at masedge.com/iron. Runnersconnect fans will automatically save 20% on any purchase.
It's a heart-to-heart on Spotlight today, as Gareth and Ross kick off by discussing a Discourse question about whether running marathons is bad for your heart? Ross describes five cardiac "risks" that have been documented, giving context and a bit of reassurance in response to theory that excessive endurance training is damaging to heart tissue. We then talk about maximum heart rate, and why it's an imperfect anchor for training prescription and a poor comparison between people. We shift from heart to brain to briefly discuss whether coaches should be sanctioned when players tackle poorly in rugby, and end off with a brief look at two teen phenoms competing in Australia last week, wondering whether their trajectories are inviting unreasonable pressure at too young an age.DiscourseAs always, Spotlight is inspired by your engagement in our Discourse community, and you can become a member by visting the Patreon site, and pledging a small monthly amount that gets you access and an opportunity to engage with, and learn from, fellow listeners.Show notesIan's question about heart risk from marathon running, and some excellent Discourse replies - Members onlyThe research paper on troponin elevation after marathons, which kicked off the Discourse discussion at the front of today's showGood insight and discussion on whether too much exercise is bad for you? Here's that article i mentioned where Tim Noakes punched some holes in the theory that marathon runners would be protected against coronary artery diseaseUltimately, sudden cardiac death in marathon runners is rare.
