Pat talks about who he likes in the current crop of distance running and his opinions on what they need to succeed to be top marathoners before setting most of his personal bests in domestic racing and then recounts his best marathons at Beppu-Oita and Lake Biwa in Japan only to deal with the absurd politics involved with organisers, Athletics Australia and the Olympic selection process. The conversation wraps up with the transition from athlete to coaching and getting involved with charity fundraising and emceeing events to engage with the wider running community. Episode #81 could be one of FTK's longest ever. They then discuss Patreon's new Chasing Paris UK series before secretly announcing the special guest for the upcoming live show at Runners Paradise on February 19th (tickets will be on sale next week). Brett & Joel cover some highlight performances over the weekend (shout-out to Pat Tiernan) before taking the listeners through their training weeks. Riley chats with Brisbane based marathoner Tim Vincent. The interview starts off horribly when Riley incorrectly assumes Tim is from the Gold Coast. From there, the boys smooth things out and talk about Tim's 2023 season - firstly his 2:17 marathon debut on the Gold Coast, then his 2:12 follow up in Kobe, Japan. Tim shares his unconventional build up to Kobe, and his outlook on what 2024 might hold for him. Finally, Tim shares his love of the round ball game. Ep. 94: Andrea Doney - The Slow Coach *Interview starts at 24:35* About The Slow Coach: "She wasn't interested in metrics like getting faster, but in celebrating time alone, time on feet, personal progress, better mental health and the life affirming process of overcoming a personal obstacle. Over time she clarified these insights into a running community and qualified as a Level 3 Performance Development Coach (Trail & Ultra) through Athletics Australia. She is a wife and mum to two (almost) grown-up boys. The Slow Coach aims to create a safe, inclusive and welcoming space for runners who might otherwise be intimidated by running programs. Former Olympic sprinter Patrick Johnson has joined Sport Integrity Australia as a Culture and Safety Advisor to ensure our responses are appropriate and informed. In this edition of On Side, Patrick talks about his role in helping to develop an agency and a sporting landscape that is culturally capable, respectful and engaging. “I think there's a shift to understanding sport as a vehicle for health, for education, to awareness, but also know what it means around reconciliation,” he says. “And I think that there's a sense of the next nine years until Brisbane 2032 that we want to ensure that all Australians are part of the Olympic Games and part of sport and that's probably a bigger picture that we've looked at.” He says the shift is even more important with the 2032 Olympics on the horizon. “You can see the shift around real respect, real acknowledgment and real understanding. There has to be a pathway regardless of where you live in this country. If you want to be a great sports person then let's make sure you have the opportunity ... It should be not just for the rich, it should be for every single person in this country to aspire, believe and could be part of.” He says the great thing about many athletes is that they are driving the change themselves because they see Australia and sport as diverse and multicultural. “But how do we ensure that it's for everyone? And I think the great thing that we've got in Australia, there's a real movement within athletes in this country that are really the game changers.” Best known for being the only Australian man to smash the 10-second barrier for the 100m, Patrick also discusses his career path, the importance of language, the role of the media, and his hopes for the future of sport. We also talk to former Australian Diamond captain and world champion Caitlin Bassett who, too, has recently taken up a role at Sport Integrity Australia as an Athlete Educator. Education has come a long way since she began her career, she says. “The information that I was getting at the start of my career and the information I was getting at the end was vastly different,” she says. “I was always learning every time we came together to do an education session, whether it being around drugs and sport, whether it be around integrity issues, around wagering and betting in sport and things like that, it was always something new and something learning because sport was evolving at such a rapid rate.” For many years the poster girl for Australian netball, she says the profile also came at a price, particularly when social media came along. “By opening up your life and sharing your life to them “[fans] is a great way, I guess, to bring them along on the ride with you,” she says, “but you are also opening yourself up to the negative side and that is obviously abuse and some of the unkind comments that come along with it.” Those comments were not only from “fans” ready to critique her performance, but from disgruntled gamblers, she says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Individual sport can be so rewarding, and yet so punishing. Alex has built a career in an individual sport that requires such deep focus in the present. A focus that is constantly being battled by internal pressures. Alex and I spoke about his long-term relationships with athletes. Building a relationship with an athlete for such a long time can be hard. Alex has known a few of his top contending athletes for about 13 years. It's tricky to build these relationships as you must the success rate or acceptance is so much harder to achieve when compared to a group of athletes in a team. Alex touches on both the highs and the lows of such a relationship that occur both on and off the track. Alex considers himself lucky and privileged to be able to guide someone for such a long period of time. He admits that these relationships are far from being smooth all the time. But Alex links that to life outside of sport, we cannot be perfect all the time, and we work on bettering ourselves and each other through collaboration and fixing it together. We then discuss the topic of the mindset of an individual athlete. Alex main point surrounds the idea of being dismissive. No matter what the last attempt/point looked like or ended up like, whether it was a positive or negative result, the athlete must dismiss that attempt and focus on the present. We talk about how these can transfer into life outside of competitive sport and the difficulty of trying not to bring things from outside the track into training. A common theme of those I have talked to in the past is compartmentalising. Alex likens this to learning a specific skill. Alex admits how he has had his share of bad days and he has carried heavy loads with him during some sessions. This is something that Alex really wants to improve on. Lastly, Alex talks about the importance of curiosity. He believes that staying curious with people, occupation, and the world will lead a practitioner to success. Curiosity needs to be paired with truth. Even if the truth may be harsh or difficult, it will always lead you to the best outcome. ‘I am where I am because I chose to be here' @alexstewart81 stewartalex_ alexstewart@hotmail.com.au

The waffle has led to amazing opportunities to bring in experts from a range of fields to chat through all things nutrition and sport performance. Our ultimate goal has always been to translate the science into practical tips that you can apply in your everyday lives. This pod was born from a need to answer some important questions regarding genetic testing.  What is the place of genetic testing in sport, nutrition and overall health?  Who will find it useful?  When is it a waste of time? Genetic testing typically involves sending off a sample away for analysis and receiving back a report which tells you a few key things about what you may want to change in your diet and lifestyle. However, is it worth the investment? Today's podcast is all about chatting through the evidence, understanding where the research currently lies and deciding whether it's worth the investment.  To have this conversation we have bought in someone who has a lot more experience on this topic than we do. Craig Pickering is an exercise physiologist who has completed his doctoral studies in genetic testing within sport. He also comes from an athletic background so understands the unique challenges athletes face. Craig was a track sprinter for team GB but also worked in a genetic testing company prior to moving to Australia. He is now the athlete pathway manager for Athletics Australia. This podcast really turns the research into real life experience making it super useful to you guys. We have show notes on our blog at www.compeatnutrition.com where you can download all of the things we chatted about today including the key papers we mentioned in the podcast and any other interesting material.
