Guest: Toronto Star reporter Mark Colley and contributor Aisling Murphy In this episode, This Matters looks at the Tay-Tay-takeover of Toronto, in which the pop star's six concerts over 10 days have been estimated to bring in as many as a half a million tourists and pump hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy. Reporter Mark Colley provides some perspective on the phenomenon and all it has entailed, from massive security, transit and traffic planning, to the scene around the city. Aisling Murphy, the Star's resident Swiftie, was at the show on Thursday night, and provides a look at the vibes inside, and a perspective on what the performance was like. PLUS: How Taylor's Toronto “secret songs” in her first performance tied into the season.

Last November, after Josef Puska was sentenced to life for the murder of Aisling Murphy, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced that the State needed more spaces in prisons.“If people want dangerous people locked up for a long time, we're going to need more room in our prisons,” the Taoiseach said. Minister for Justice Helen McEntee later confirmed plans for 600 additional spaces across four prison estates. But, not everyone agrees that building more prison cells is the answer. The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) has repeatedly called for a reduction in the number of people being jailed, noting that nearly three quarters of committals in 2022 were for 12 months or less. “We need to see a shift to people getting more community service,” IPRT director Saoirse Brady told today's podcast. “I don't think that we require extra spaces. It's actually stated Government policy since August 2022 that we would reduce the number of people going to prison for 12 months or less.”Irish Times Crime and Security Editor Conor Lally also joins the podcast to discuss the pros and cons of building more spaces for inmates in Irish prisons.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. [Documentary] "I had no contact with this man. All I ever said was hello to him. It's stalking. And it builds and builds." These are the words of my mother, Eileen Byrne. She's going to recount her ordeal with a stalker. I was just a kid at the time. I knew very little about it, until lately when she started talking about the incident. It was a recent Irish news story that triggered her memory. The murder of Aisling Murphy in broad daylight, sparked a national conversation not just about violence against women but also about the level of harassment and intimidation women are forced to endure on a daily basis. Aisling's murder added fuel to a prominent campaign to make stalking a criminal offence in Ireland.
