After a major tragedy, public inquiries look at what happened, why it happened, and who is to blame, and what could be done to prevent this happening again.   One of the most notorious is the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry, where many innocent people were falsely accused of crimes. Alma and Lucinda spoke to Flora Page, a barrister at 23 Essex Street Chambers,  she recently represented the sub postmasters in the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry.  She told us: ·      Why inquiries are so important when there has been a major tragedy ·      How they ensure organisations are held accountable for their actions·      Her role in the post office horizon IT Inquiry and why lawyers are involved?  ·      How the voices of children and young people can be heard in an InquiryWhen Flora was 10 she liked sailing and acting and thought she wanted to be a geologist!LinksWhat is the Role of Ethics in Law (Richard Moorhead Series 4 Episode 8)Watch Flora Page interview witnesses  with commentaryPost Office Horizon IT inquiry Livestream videoshttps://www.23es.com/barrister/flora-page/UK Covid-19 inquiry  Post Office Horizon IT inquiry.Inquiries Act 2005. https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/public-inquirieshttps://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn06410/Keep your questions coming in. In this moving episode, we sit down with Charles Persinger, 59, from Swindon, who shares his powerful journey through loss, resilience, and rediscovery of love. Charles opens up about the unimaginable heartbreak of losing his mother, Susan (74), and his wife, Katie (51), both to Covid, within just six weeks of each other. He describes the depths of grief he faced, losing the two most important women in his life, and how he eventually made a choice that changed everything: to choose love over fear.Through the Covid 19 Bereaved Families for Justice group, Charles found a community where he could channel his anger and determination for accountability and healing. It was here he met Lynda, who had also suffered a devastating loss—her father to Covid. Their shared experiences and mutual support blossomed into a new relationship, giving them both a chance at love and companionship amidst the tragedy.Charles reflects on his journey from profound loss to love, saying that “the human capacity to love is endless, no matter what we've been through.” By joining forces with others who shared his grief, he not only found support but also helped lay the groundwork for the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, a significant step toward justice and remembrance for those lost. His message to listeners is one of courage and hope: “Don't underestimate your capacity to love. Be brave.” Charles's story reminds us that even in the darkest times, we can find strength, purpose, and the possibility of new beginnings.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/stolen-goodbyes. If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. And we talk to Daisie Lane who tells us of her own experience and her book chronicling 150 other women's experiences.Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known for the hugely popular Shopaholic series and many other bestsellers, has sold over 45 million books which have been translated into more than 40 languages. Her latest novel, What Does It Feel Like?, is her most autobiographical yet. It tells the story of a novelist who wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there and learns she's had surgery to remove a large tumour growing in her brain. She must re-learn how to walk, talk, and write again. Six months ago, Sophie shared with her readers on social media that in 2022, she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of aggressive brain cancer. It's known for its poor prognosis with only 25% of people surviving more than one year, and only 5% survive more than five years.A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 22-year-old woman was found in south Belfast. Mary Ward is the fourth woman to be murdered in the space of six weeks in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland - or PSNI - have referred the case to the office of the Police Ombudsman. Earlier this year, the PSNI released figures showing that in the five years between 2019 and 2024, 30 women and girls across Northern Ireland were killed by men. To put that into context, the population of Northern Ireland is around 1.9 million. We hear from Alison Morris - the Crime Reporter for the Belfast Telegraph.Woman's Hour is joined by the winner of the BBC Green Sport Award, the rower Imogen Grant. BONUS: What the UK COVID App Project Taught Us About Remote Agile Collaboration: A Conversation with Giovanni Asproni NOTE: We want to thank the folks at Tuple.app for being so generous with their stories, and supporting the podcast. Visit tuple.app/scrum and share them if you find the app useful! Remember, sharing is caring!   In this special BONUS episode, Giovanni Asproni, CTO and co-founder of Launch Ventures, takes us behind the scenes of his work on the UK government's COVID-19 app project. Giovanni shares insights into the rapid development process, the adoption of remote pairing and ensemble programming, and valuable lessons on leadership in large-scale, high-stakes projects. Giovanni also offers practical advice for teams embracing remote collaboration and agile methodologies. The Start of a Crucial Project "When we got the call from the UK government, we knew this was a mission to help stop the spread of the virus." Giovanni kicks off the episode by recounting how his team at Zühlke Engineering got involved in the development of the UK's COVID-19 app. Tasked with the challenge of building a solution that could help prevent the spread of the virus, they were under immense pressure to deliver quickly. Giovanni explains how they tackled technical hurdles, such as using Bluetooth technology to assess contagion risks, despite the lack of existing APIs on iOS and Android at the time. "Speed was essential, but we also needed a robust design—Bluetooth was key to evaluating contagion risks, even though we didn't have the APIs we needed." Overcoming Rapid Release Challenges "We had to move fast, but accessibility and coordination were non-negotiable." Giovanni discusses how the team, which consisted of around 60-70 members spread across the globe, used agile methodologies to stay organized and on schedule. By fostering open communication and using a clear team structure, they were able to streamline development. Agile planning and strong leadership, including cross-team coordination, were crucial to staying on track. "Agile was our backbone—every team knew their responsibility, and clear communication meant we could deploy with confidence." The Power of Remote Pairing and Ensemble Programming "Pairing allowed us to maintain quality under immense pressure." Giovanni dives deep into the practices of remote pairing and ensemble programming (or mobbing), which were introduced to enhance code quality and resilience during the project. With team members working remotely and under heavy scrutiny, mobbing provided a social outlet and improved problem-solving, while tools like Tuple made remote collaboration seamless. He reflects on the success of these practices, highlighting their impact on efficiency and team morale. "We embraced mobbing not just for resilience, but to stay connected in a time when social contact was scarce." Advice for Remote Pairing Beginners "Don't overthink it—just start and take breaks!" For teams new to remote pairing or ensemble programming, Giovanni offers simple but effective advice: give it a serious try, take breaks to avoid burnout, and don't overcomplicate the process. He emphasizes that these practices can dramatically improve productivity and team cohesion if executed well. "Take the plunge—remote pairing can feel awkward at first, but the benefits are worth it." Key Lessons on Remote Work and Collaboration "Don't try to recreate the office—remote work offers unique advantages." Reflecting on the lessons from the COVID-19 app project, Giovanni explains how remote work is not just a substitute for office work but an entirely different mode of collaboration. He warns against trying to replicate office dynamics remotely, and instead, encourages teams to embrace the benefits of remote settings, such as easier scheduling and fewer distractions from management oversight. "Remote work isn't about replicating the office—when done right, it's a whole new way to collaborate." Resources for Learning More "Explore the power of mob programming with these great resources." To wrap up, Giovanni shares a few key resources for listeners who want to dive deeper into remote pairing, ensemble programming, or leadership in software engineering. He recommends "Software Teaming" by Woody Zuill and the Remote Mob Programming website, which offers comprehensive guides and tools. You can also find out more about Giovanni's work at his company website: https://www.asprotunity.com. During the episode, Giovanni mentions a network of consultants, which you can access at: https://www.clockwork.ing. And the podcast Giovanni hosts is the Software Engineering Radio podcast. Vagrant birds are those that appear in locations where they are not usually found. They might have been blown off course by a storm or have been affected by changing weather patterns due to climate change. Although a treat for birders, these visitors can also have a big impact on their new environments as Victoria Gill finds out when she heads to Burton Mere Wetlands on the Dee Estuary with Dr Alexander Lees, reader in biodiversity at Manchester Metropolitan University. As former Prime Minister Boris Johnson gives his testimony, we hear the latest from the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry with BBC Health Reporter Jim Reed. A new study reveals that, contrary to a commonly-held view, the brain does not have the ability to rewire itself to compensate for the loss of, for example sight, an amputation or stroke. Rishi Sunak endured one his toughest weeks yet as Prime Minister, as he faced the Covid Inquiry and tried to placate rebellious MPs. But he lived to fight another day - as does his controversial Rwanda Bill. For Westminster watchers it was all about the mooted rebellion that didn't materialise, but for Nish and Coco, the real story was the death of an asylum seeker aboard the Bibby Stockholm barge. For Nish, this stark warning about the potentially tragic effects of inhumane policies, should be cause for introspection amongst our political leaders. The news that the final report of the Grenfell Inquiry has been pushed back once again, has frustrated many of those waiting to see justice done. Journalist Peter Apps joins Nish and Coco to discuss the inquiry, and offer his analysis of the systemic issues that allowed the tragedy to happen…and whether it could happen again.Welsh political journalist Will Hayward also pops up to offer an instant reaction to the news that the Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford is stepping down - what's his lasting legacy, and what happens next? The Guardian's Kiran Stacey joins Nish and Coco to explain what these cuts mean for public services (spoiler alert: it's not good), and to explain why these proposals look like the work of a Chancellor who doesn't plan to be in office much longer. While the Tories plot out a strategy for the next election– and its aftermath– the millions of people using food banks have other concerns. Helen Barnard, Director of Policy, Research & Impact at the Trussell Trust explains what the Autumn Statement means for people struggling with food insecurity and homelessness, and why tax cuts typically benefit the wealthiest members of society, not the poorest. After California governor Gavin Newsom returned from China, several counties from Sonoma to Santa Clara have enacted mask mandates again, lasting through March of 2024, in order to curb the spread of C19, RSV, and the flu. This comes on the heels of a new CDC guideline for hospitals and health care facilities to force all providers to wear masks during routine care, especially for all respiratory patients. Across the ocean, the UK ‘Covid-inquiry' is proving to be beneficial for both undermining the public's faith in government and demonstrating how the word ‘science' was used to manipulate that same public. From the US-NIH to UK-NHS, white papers show that psychologists employed behavioral modification techniques, propaganda, overwhelming random data, and the like to convince people that a cold was a world stopping disease. In 2022 the Atlantic ran the headline ‘Let's Declare a Pandemic Amnesty', and on the one year anniversary of its publication, Scott Galloway, an NYU professor, went on television and said the same thing. In fact, the argument made by these two sources is equivalent to ‘I was only following orders'.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

Apologies in advance.Support Kevin's organization Collateral Global:https://collateralglobal.org/article/uk-covid-inquiry-turns-its-focus-to-great-barrington-declaration/Podcast Transcript Highlights:Kevin on his background:I've worked for 15 years in public health, global public health programs, mostly in the global south, so in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and that's on infectious disease programs. So I was involved tangentially in the Ebola response. And during the Zika pandemic, I actually led quite a large mosquito control program in Haiti. So that's dealing with community engagement, messaging, mosquito control, and the whole sort of range of scientific questions also about, well, where are microcephaly cases happening, et cetera. I've also worked a lot on parasitic diseases, neglected tropical diseases, et cetera. And all of that work in the global public health community in general, we have these sort of ethical frameworks around not doing harm, around equity, or, you know, community empowerment, et cetera. And we saw a lot of those sort of guiding principles thrown out the window during the COVID response. And I think a lot of people felt like, or a lot of academics who work in this space, didn't feel like they had a voice, or at least were very confused about where the consensus was going. And so... my sort of work for the last two years has been to try to somewhat speak to that issue, which is obviously a very political issue. Consider supporting us:Kevin's detailed survey on the literature on lockdowns and their effects on poor countries:The report is called, How Did the COVID-19 Pandemic Response Harm Society? A Global Evaluation and State of Knowledge Review, covering 2020 and 2021. And I think what motivated me on, well, there's a lot of things that did, but on the one hand, the public discourse and public conversation, that there is this sort of scientific consensus. And I've actually called this and I'm covering the UK COVID inquiry for an online newspaper called Unherd. And I've called this the lockdown doctrine. which is the notion that during a respiratory pandemic, you need to lock down society faster and harder as a precondition to get a vaccine and then you reopen, right? And that's a very particular model, a political model, and it comes with some very detailed assumptions about reality and also about scientific evidence that I think is very flawed. What I saw essentially is you have thousands of papers on all these different topics about the harms of non-pharmaceutical interventions during COVID. And yet we don't have a good sense of, well, how do you put those together? How do you weigh, let's say the control of COVID, which has these very neat statistics, right? Like cases, deaths, you can sort of talk. It has this sort of simplicity and elegance to it that compels people to act and think a certain way. But then when you put together all of the different harms, it's like, it's, it's almost too complicated for people to get their head around. And so when we challenge, let's say this lockdown doctrine by saying, Well, actually, when you think about trade-offs, there's a lot more harm to locking down society than there is benefit. People will say, well, how do you weigh that? And so this framework was an attempt to, in as much detail as possible, come to terms with, well, what are those harms? What's the full range of it? And what does the academic community, or the academic knowledge, tell us about these harms? So on the one hand, type, right, type of harm, but then also the magnitude. And in that regard, I would say that the report has these sort of two elements to it. On the one hand, it's a story about the actual harms that took place in the real world, but it's filtered through the academic research that is available. And in some areas, we have very concrete statistics that are easy to appreciate, but in a lot of areas, we don't.Kevin on the pandemic's negative impact on obesity and lifestyle:I would say one of the more worrying ones — this is from a meta-analysis on obesity rates — estimating a 1% increase in children and a 2% increase in adults in global obesity rates. So that's a pretty significant increase when you think about the consequences of obesity. People became much more addicted to screens. Screen use increased by 50% among children. And those screen addiction habits have continued, right? We're living in this sort of era where if you watch kids, they're all staring at their phones and COVID encouraged them to stare at their phones longer. And I think that that's, that is going to have astronomical cultural and psychological impacts going forward. It was something that we're already struggling with as a society, but we said, okay, everyone's, you know, don't go meet your friends at the park, which was already decreasing because how many people actually go to the park and know their neighbors. And if you go to the park, you watch the parents sitting on their phones while their kids are playing. Anyhow, I could rant about that for a long time. I actually don't own a cell phone. No, because of these effects. Yeah, I kind of just got rid of it a while ago. So sleep problems, all sorts of interesting studies, actually even about dream interruption. There's actually a whole sort of niche area of COVID and dreams, which is quite interesting. Obviously, exercise decreased, and exercise has all sorts of beneficial effects for health. The Illusion of Consensus is a reader-supported publication.
