SSE has grown its secured battery energy storage system (BESS) pipeline in Ireland to 300MW with the acquisition of the 120MW/240MWh Thornsberry BESS project near Tullamore, County Offaly. Pictured is the company's 50MW battery storage facility in Wiltshire, England. Co. Offaly, 6th November 2024: SSE has acquired the project development rights for a 120MW/240MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project in County Offaly from UK-based renewable energy company Low Carbon which, if approved for final delivery, could be constructed and operational by the end of the decade. The purchase marks another step forward for SSE Renewables, the renewable energy business of FTSE-listed SSE plc, as it continues to grow its battery storage development portfolio on the island of Ireland. Under the deal, SSE Renewables has acquired the consented Thornsberry BESS project from Grid Systems Services Limited, a developer of grid-scale battery storage projects in Ireland owned by Low Carbon. Thornsberry is on a secured greenfield site in the townlands of Derrynagall and Ballydaly near Tullamore, with planning consent for a grid-scale BESS. It has a grid connection offer to connect 120MW of import/export capacity to Ireland's national grid via an adjacent existing 110kV substation. The proposed battery system would be capable of storing up to 240MWh of energy for flexible dispatch at times of peak demand. When called upon, Thornsberry would be capable of providing back-up energy to the equivalent of over 115,000 Irish homes for up to two hours at a time while also delivering essential balancing services to Ireland's energy system. Subject to a final investment decision by SSE Renewables, the project could enter construction and be operational by the end of the decade. The project would be expected to provide a boost to the supply chain and job creation in County Offaly and the wider Midlands during delivery. It would also support the delivery of local authority essential services in Offaly through the payment of development contributions and commercial rates. The addition of the Thornsberry project grows the company's secured battery pipeline in Ireland to 300MW as part of a wider 1.8GW pipeline across Ireland and the UK. Heather Donald, Director of Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery - UK and Ireland, SSE Renewables, said: "Acquiring the consented Thornsberry project in County Offaly is another great step forward in our plans to grow SSE Renewables' battery storage development portfolio in Ireland. The addition of this grid-scale project can make an important contribution to the delivery of SSE's fully funded five-year Net Zero Acceleration Programme while also advancing the diversity of the technologies in our portfolio. "The Midlands has a long and proud tradition of supporting Ireland's energy security. With the development of new onshore wind, solar and battery projects such as Thornsberry, the region can continue to play a significant role in delivering homegrown energy for Irish consumers while decarbonising the country's power system. In doing so, we can help ensure vital energy projects can deliver positive social and economic benefits to County Offaly and the wider Midlands." Low Carbon, which began developing the Thornsberry project in 2018, was one of the first movers to develop, build and operate battery storage in the Irish renewables market and currently provides 20 per cent of the country's operational storage capacity. Roy Bedlow, Founder and Chief Executive of Low Carbon, said: "We are delighted to collaborate with SSE on this project, which underscores Low Carbon's leading position in the Irish storage market. Furthermore, this announcement demonstrates our expertise in delivering high-quality investable assets to the market while playing an important role in supporting our future growth as we aim to build 20GW of new renewable energy. "Increasing renewable energy capacity is just one part of the answer as we look to ...

Highfield Solar has secured project financing to fund the construction and operation of two additional Solar PV projects with a total capacity of 132 MWp. This milestone follows the financing of four other projects in Ireland, totalling 473 MWp. Since July 2021, Highfield Solar has secured over €400 million in cumulative debt funding for more than 600 MWp of solar projects in Ireland. Highfield Solar Limited, a joint venture between renewable energy developers ib vogt, Highfield Energy, and Aura Power, together with Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A., have successfully reached financial close for the 70 MWp Clonin North and 62 MWp North Arklow solar PV plants. Highfield Solar and Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. have successfully continued their collaboration with this financing, having previously financed a portfolio of 473 MWp across four solar projects: Rathnaskilloge (106 MWp) and Gaskinstown (93 MWp) in December 2023, and Rosspile (138 MWp) and Gillinstown (136 MWp) in July 2021. Both the Clonin North and North Arklow projects were successful in the Government of Ireland's second competitive Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS 2) auction run by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications in 2022. The RESS auctions are designed to promote investment in renewable energy, supporting Ireland's goal of achieving 80% renewable electricity by 2030. Highfield Solar is proud to be contributing to this critical target on Ireland's path to decarbonisation. As part of the RESS scheme, local communities, clubs, and societies will benefit from approximately €100,000 in annual funding for the next 15 years. Matheson LLP supported Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. through the transaction, and technical advice was provided by Krug & Schram. Further advice was also provided by Howden Group. Highfield was again supported by Mason Hayes and Curran LLP, Augustus Cullen Law and Crotty Group. "We are delighted Highfield Solar has reached this significant milestone and we are now looking forward to the continued roll-out of our portfolio. This is the result of years of planning and investment in these projects. We have enjoyed a very positive relationship with our partners in Highfield Solar, ib vogt, and Aura Power, and their experience and knowledge allied with our own has been invaluable. As a company founded in Ireland, we are hugely proud of our role in continuing to attract such significant investment into the country for renewable electricity generation projects. It is also very important to us that the establishment of the associated community benefit funds will make significant contributions to the locality over the next decade and beyond", says Peter Kavanagh, Managing Director of Highfield Energy. "The Clonin North and North Arklow projects mark an exciting new chapter in our successful joint venture, helping to build some of the largest solar plants in Ireland," said Anton Milner, CEO of ib vogt. "We are deeply grateful to our financing partners for their vital role in advancing clean, renewable energy across the country. These projects not only deliver significant ecological and economic benefits but also contribute to long-term, meaningful change for the local communities. With the support of the RESS scheme, we are optimistic about the future of solar energy in Ireland and the lasting positive impact it will bring." "The Irish solar market is now one of the most exciting in Europe and the scale of these projects is a testament to that. We look forward to seeing these projects reach energisation, along with many more in our development pipeline." says Simon Coulson, Director at Aura Power. Project Details With a total capacity of 70 MWp, the Clonin North solar PV plant will be located on a ca. 70-hectare site near the village of Rhode, County Offaly. The North Arklow site, with a capacity of 62MWp, will be located near the town of Arklow in County Wicklow. The projects will utilize high-capacity bifacial modules on fixed-til...

It's said a light has gone out in County Clare with the death a pioneering music educator. Musicians from this county and beyond have been paying tribute to the legendary Dysart native Frank Custy whose funeral is taking place today. Although it seemed he'd follow a sporting path instead of a musical one early on, Frank Custy is credited as one of the most pivotal figures in the promotion of Irish traditional music in Clare of the last 60 years. Starting life in Dysart, Frank trained as a teacher at St. Patrick's College in Drumcondra and after a stint teaching in Eglish, County Offaly, moved back to Clare where he took up a position at Toonagh National School. It was there that Frank began what would become a key aspect of his legacy; teaching music in the classroom and eventually holding regular evening group classes which all were welcome to attend. Among the illustrious musicians who honed their craft under Frank's tutelage are Sharon Shannon, Siobhan Peoples, Sean Conway, Yvonne Casey and James Cullinan. Former teacher at St. Flannan's College, musician and educator Gary Shannon says Frank's gift was his ability to teach people how to derive enjoyment from playing music. Many cite Frank's "Céad Poirt" booklets, and later accompanying CDs, as their gateway into Irish traditional music. Music aside, he was also a successful hurler in his day, winning the Minor A Championship with Ruan in 1953 at the age of 14, winning the Harty with St. Flannan's and also being part of the Ruan teams which won the county championship in 1959, 1960 and 1962. For his many achievements, he was honoured with a MÓRglór Award in 2016. Clare FM West Wind presenter Joan Hanrahan, who acted as MC on the night of the award ceremony, says his incorporation of music into the classroom schedule was "groundbreaking".

Nothing beats visiting other gardens for inspiration and learning, and in this week's Gardeners' Corner, presenter David Maxwell asks three of his regular experts to choose one of their favourite gardens. Those featured include RHS Bridgewater near Manchester which opened in 2021. It's not only one of the newest public gardens, but it is also one of the biggest garden projects undertaken in the UK in the last century. For Maurice Parkinson, it offers multiple layers of interest. David and Maurice meet curator Marcus Chilton-Jones and Garden Manager Tracey Snell as they tour the walled garden and the Chinese streamside garden. Birr is County Offaly can get the coldest and the warmest temperatures in Ireland, and it's also where you will find an impressive collection of trees at Birr Castle Demesne. For Ann Fitzsimmons it will always be a special place as she spent many happy months working there after deciding to change career. Up in County Donegal, Brendan Little only has to go a stone's throw from his home to find some of the gardens on the Donegal Garden Trail. He chooses Greenfort as his favourite which enjoys stunning views of Lough Swilly and uses shrubs to create year round interest and a low maintenance garden. This week Sarah and Trina speak with author and RTE Prime Time's Security Correspondent Barry Cummins. Barry talks about growing up in Tallaght in South West Dublin, his path to journalism and how one of the first stories he covered as a local radio journalist was the disappearance of Fiona Pender who was seven months pregnant when she vanished from her home town of Tullamore in County Offaly in August 1996.He has covered numerous stories about the women who vanished from the Leinster area in the 90s and his book Missing was published 20 years ago this year.Barry talks about his work with the families of missing persons since then saying it is an area he has covered a lot of "by chance."He describes the torment that families endure when a loved one goes missing saying there really are no words to sum up what these families have gone through."One thing I have found down the years is that families of missing people are very vulnerable, in many ways they need media, the need the publicity, they need help....sometimes if you knock on a door....they let you in to do an interview....they were grateful for the interest I had but they also realised I could help them in terms of publicity."He talks about the upgrade this year to murder of the case into the disappearance of American woman Annie McCarrick " if it happened today there would be so many other appeals, social media, you might be able to reach the person.....somebody knows."Barry Cummins has been involved as MC since 2013 for the annual Missing Person's Day which takes place in December. "families of missing people are invited to attend and its all about the families."He also talks about recent developments in the ongoing bid by International law enforcement to take down the Kinahan Cartel and the fact that the net is closing on those involved.Enjoy the episode. Twenty years ago this year, a headless body was discovered by a County Offaly farmer. It quickly became apparent this was a case for archaeologists and not Gardaí and as it turned out, the ‘Old Croghan Man' was not the first so-called ‘bog body' to be discovered that year either. On display today in Dublin's National Museum of Archaeology on Kildare Street, 2003 proved to be an incredible year for Irish archeology, and for understanding the Irish past in sometimes surprising ways. Donal Fallon joins Gavan for another episode of Hidden Histories to discuss.

It was the mid 1950's in County Offaly, Ireland when seventeen year old Margaret (Peg) Holland discovered she was carrying a child and was already seven months along! Learning of their daughter's pregnancy, Peg's parents brought her to an unwed mother's home called Sean Ross Abbey in County Tipperary. It was there, after a difficult breach delivery, that Peg gave birth to a baby girl and she called her Mary. Peg's parents arrived three days after Mary's birth to bring Peg and her baby home. Sadly, despite the love received from her family, Peg was the target of unrelenting judgement and cruel comments from people in her community. In order to give Mary the best possible future, Peg made the heartbreaking decision to place her daughter up for adoption and Mary was eventually adopted by a loving family from the United Sates and grew up in Illinois. Sometime after parting with her daughter, Peg decided that there was nothing left for her at home in Ireland, as it only reminded her of recent heartache and tears. Therefore, Peg left Ireland and moved to the New York area and started working as a nanny. As the years passed, Peg married Mick O'Hagen and had four more children. Meanwhile, Mary grew up in a happy household, married and had a family of her own. Upon the death of her adoptive mother, Mary began to search for her birth mother. One day in September 2008, Peg received a phone call that would change her life and the lives of her family… In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Tom Gorman, who, along with his late mother in law, Peg O'Hagen, co-authored the book titled “I Called Her Mary”, which tells a story of love, adoption and the reuniting of a mother and daughter. We will also be joined by Mary herself, who will tell how her journey to find her birth mother resulted in the joy of an extended and loving family. Introduction: Margaret Molloy is the Global Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Business Development for Siegel & Gale. Siegel and Gale is a brand, strategy, design and experience firm headquartered in NYC. Siegel and Gale believe in the power of simplicity and essentially believe Simple is Smart. Podcast Episode Summary This episode explores the Power of Marketing and the Power of Inclusive Story telling for Organisations, Teams and Brands. Margaret eloquently shares her wisdom leading teams, building brands and the journey she has been on to break down and unlearn some of the myths & biases she may have unwittingly absorbed from her background and training. She also shares the values and experiences that have shaped her and have grounded her ability to be open, influential and inclusive. Her last story epitomises her work and her ability to navigate the tensions across two countries, two countries she loves and calls her home. Points made over the episode Margaret grew up in County Offaly, Ireland on a diary farm. She was the eldest of six siblings. She enjoyed values of hard work, community, respect and dignity for others. She studied Business & Spanish in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and attributes that time as being formative, shaping her appreciation for cultural differences. Enterprise Ireland sent her to NYC for her first role with them and Margaret has never looked back. She loves the energy and chaos of NYC. Margaret lives in the Middle of Manhattan, NYC with her two teenage boys and her husband. As a lover of two countries USA and Ireland, Margaret recognises that everyone has an identity and it can be multidimensional. Sometimes we are too quick to label people and put them in boxes. Margaret identifies equally as both American and Irish and she use the image of Janus, the God of all beginnings, to explain her thinking. Inclusive Story Telling is best explained in a story. Margaret shares receiving feedback from a guest after a Panel Interview she held in Boston, an event she thought went well but to the writer failed to show case inclusivity. Margaret's focus had been on gender diversity but she learnt that she was exhibiting colour blindness. The feedback she received turned out to be Margaret's inclusive awareness moment. Space for Reflection is an important consideration. Every strength for example has its shadow. Good to think about using time to reflect and to apply questions or frameworks to get at learning. Important too to remember to upgrade our mental models. Margaret has learnt from her own experiences to be colour brave as opposed to colour blind. Curiosity and Judgement are two phenomena that cannot co-exist. Margaret shares how she unlearnt the supposed criticism that to be nosey was wrong. For Margaret one of the greatest gift you can give someone is to ask a generous question Simple is smart is a principle Siegel and Gale adopt. Being a simplifier pays. The worlds smartest brands understand the power of simplicity, whether that is through visuals, plain language or their promised experience. Research has shown that the customer will pay more for simplicity and will pay brands with loyalty. The Capital markets reward brand simplicity too. Simplicity is the intersection of Clarity and Surprise. Clarity in the use of plain language, easily understood messages, smart visuals and the surprise component is the antithesis of dull, that ahah moment when a customer appreciates “this is exactly how I would have wanted it” Siegel and Gale search for simplifiers. The beauty of simplifiers is that they know what to strip away and what to leave behind, such that a customer is clear on a brands intention and has a frictionless experience. Management is a privilege & a responsibility. Siegel and Gale are extremely thoughtful about the entire employee life cycle and how it carries through on its promises. Onboarding for example comes with robust mentoring. Psychological Safety is an important construct and Margaret pays attention to the culture she develops by encouraging people to speak in draft form, have constructive input and provide feedback. Margaret creates process, questions and frameworks to encourage psychological safety. We cannot confuse Psychological safety with group hugs. Group hugs are great and humane but Psychological safety is about business, inspiring people is a precursor to profitability. Getting at Psychological Safety is a journey. Many of us have been trained in ways that have encouraged command and control and hierarchical structures. We have been taught to value efficiency and much of the language used in corporate life is machine like. Homogenous teams are a recipe for blind spots, especially for marketeers trying to communicate with audiences that have not had the same experiences as us. Our mental models need to adjust. We need to think in terms of our impact as well as the outputs we are generating. Margaret shares how she cultivates Psychological Safety on her teams. After a project is completed she will ask what people liked and what they would wish for differently. This thinking framework evokes less defensiveness. She also uses affirmation with her team members-giving affirmation that is sincere, succinct and specific. As humans we are starved of affirmation. Criticism is an oft used tactic. Our propensity to offer criticism is grounded in our quest for efficiency. We want to fix things. The culprit is often time. We need to prioritise ruthlessly. In marketing things are changing so rapidly, there are so many new tools and processes for doing things. It is easy to get caught up in shiny new objects as opposed to being curious about what matters and impact. Simple rules for teams include; Preparing rigorously, contributing wholeheartedly and safeguarding your own trustworthiness. Important to mind your reputation and be curious to understand what people say about you when you are not in the room. Margaret shares a few more thoughts on Leadership & Teams- consider the old practice of apprenticeships. Margaret hires for attitude and builds for aptitude. Infuse Purpose, as leaders we can be quick to tell people how and what to do but sometimes we neglect the why for their work. The purpose for meetings is a topic that is often overlooked. Consider the meetings purpose, manage the context, type of meeting, how you dress the room and the theatre of meetings. Consider the roles people have in meetings such as facilitator, moderator, scribe, equal colleague etc…We should think about meets as strategic devices not as something you have to show up at. The Pre-read and Post-read should be considered as part of the meeting. In closing Margaret shares a story, a story that showcases the power of inclusive story telling. She shares how her passion for fashion and aesthetics and her love of her two countries served as an idea to create an event in 2019 to show case 10 Irish (unknown fashion designers) in NYC. May 5th - The Peoples DayLess than one week to polling day and the pundits and pollsters are filling the airways and column inches with their take on who will be the big winners and who will be the losers. Who will emerge with more or fewer Assembly seats? Will the Protocol galvinise a so far lack lustre unionist campaign? Will the DUP/TUV and their loyalist allies succeed in frightening unionist voters into toeing the line? Or will Sinn Féin up-end a century of partition and the northern state by taking enough seats for Michelle O'Neill to become First Minister?Taking a stand against hate crimeAt the start of the year people across Ireland were shocked by the brutal murder of Ashling Murphy. The 23 year old primary school teacher was attacked while out jogging along the Grand Canal at Tullamore in County Offaly. The outrage and condemnation of her murder reflected the enormous frustration and anger that exists at the regular reports of violence against women, much of it related to domestic violence. Women's Aid in the South has recorded 244 murders of women since 1996, when they first started keeping a record. In Praise Of Napping. Our dogs seem to sleep a lot. They just lie down, close their eyes and doze off whenever the notion takes them. Especially in this good weather. They pick a sunny spot and drift off into doggie dreamland. I suppose that's one of the advantages of being a dog. As long as you don't annoy the humans too much you can generally laze about. Cats are the same. They also lie in favoured spots and doze off whenever they feel like it. From them we get the term catnap. We humans could learn a lot from dogs. And cats.
In this episode, I will share what I have learned about the dark history involving Leap Castle. There are many stories that are told about one of the longest inhabited castles in Ireland. To kick it off right, we wanted to say "top of the mornin' to ye ''' but seeing as how that's just a silly Hollywood invention, we are instead going to say "A hundred thousand welcomes." Before we get into the meat and potatoes of this episode, I reached out to a friend of ours, Katie, who's father is directly from Ireland. I asked her to see if he had any sort of creepy interactions over there. She also reached out to a cousin who lives over there and I received this message, this morning: Oh boy I hit the jackpot reaching out to my cousins in Ireland I had no idea about this but here's her message. Ohhh some that I've heard, well as it happens
In light of the tragic murder of Aishling Murphy a few days ago in Tullamore, County Offaly, although I had planned on doing an episode like this in a few weeks time, I just could not get this out of my head so I decided to record this today. Things need to change big time. The fact that women can't go out and do their daily bits on their own without fear that they might be attacked, assaulted, raped or killed is not one bit normal yet we have just lived our lives for years just as though it is normal. We have been told since we were small to not do this and make sure you do that etc. etc. all to make sure we are kept safe from dangerous men. We have almost become numb to it over the years and have to accept the fact that some men will inevitably do things and we just have to do what we can to protect ourselves. Obviously what we have learned from this is that there is nothing more us as women can do anymore to protect ourselves. Therefore, conversations need to be had and changes need to be made. Actual punishments need to be put in place for men that attack women and women need to be listened to. It's not all men but it most certainly is some men and my friends and I have had our fair share of dealings to prove so which you can hear about in this episode. The justice system is warped and victim blaming needs to stop and that's just touching the surface of things that need to change. The facts and figures that I discuss in this episode are shocking. I know most of my listeners are women but I would encourage men to listen to this episode to open your eyes a bit to a few things you might not realize. RIP Aishling xx
On this weeks episode Simon K speaks about domestic violence. This week has been a really difficult week for the people of Ireland and especially the Murphy family after the murder of their daughter Aisling Murphy from Tullamore. Ashling Murphy was a 23-year-old primary teacher from Tullamore in County Offaly, Ireland who was murdered on the 12th of January 2022. It is believed that she was murdered after she went jogging in the area at around 4pm, with Gardai confirming they believe the attack took place in broad daylight. Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station. Simon speaks about this tragic death and how we can educate boys, young men and each other about respecting women and young girls and how we all should feel safe on our streets. On this week's Episode I chat to Aisling Daly, a County Offaly woman who has been living in New York for 8 years. This episode touches on two big areas of interest for many of my lovely podcast listeners: women working in the Construction Industry & ladies Gaelic Football & Camogie in NYC. Aisling and I discuss how she Navigated her career path in New York and the great opportunities there are here for women working in Construction. Aisling explains the importance of being open minded and determined when starting out in the construction world and the variety of roles that are out there! We also talk about Aisling's passion for Gaelic games and Camogie and the trojan work she has put in over the years to develop Camogie in NY. Aisling coaches St Brigid's junior football team and has been heavily involved with the New York development squads– coaching young girls from under 7 right up to youth development teams that have travelled around the US playing Camogie. Aisling has been growing the game from grass roots level right up to forming her own club, Annie Moore's in 2018. Annie Moore's is team of mostly American born players and ladies who have never played the sport before. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, Annie Moore's made history and won the New York League against an impressive Liberty Gaels side – another strong club formed in NY in 2015. After their historic NY League win, this novel team went on to win their first ever North American Intermediate title in Boston last Sunday.Aisling is a woman who likes to keep fit and healthy, however in 2018 she was hit with a rare illness that left her having to slow down on all fronts. After feeling very unwell, spending time in hospital and receiving surgery, Aisling learned that she had a spontaneous CSF leak in her spine. Her ability to work, coach and train like she had been was completely changed and her condition still effects her now, 3 years later. We reflect on the importance of self care, having good people around you, and taking life (and the GAA!) with a pinch of salt. I hope you enjoy!

The boys are back for this one too! Malcom and Chuck are back to hear more stories from us. Krys leads off with Prospect Place House in Ohio also known as the Trinway Mansion. Built by George Adams in 1856 to house his family and new wife. Rumor was the ghost of his first wife was none too happy with the new wife and haunted his current house. This new house had some modern amenities before they were common. The first house they built was burned to ground by arson. Cue a second house being built and some shady business about who may have burned it down. Native American burial ground and a woman named Satan or a shady carpenter, you decide. Or perhaps it was the fact that George was an abolitionist with his brothers and ran the Underground Railroad through the house rather than the mill that the family owned? Rumors and stories abound about this house, even more shady goings on after George died and left the house to his daughter. Anna's husband disappeared and a detective was employed. Cue a sighting in San Francisco with an unidentified gentleman. The house changed hands several times and is now the sight of the G.W. Adams Educational Center which teaches about the Underground Railroad. Oh, did we mention this house was haunted? Sightings, sounds, and some tragic stories center around this housed. Tori follows up by crossing the pond and ends up in Ireland. Leap Castle in Coolderry, County Offaly. Most likely built by the O'Bannon clan in the 13th century, this castle has had a bloody history. The castle changed hands into the O'Carrol clan and may have been built on a Neolithic burial ground, you want ghosts… Brother fought brother and murder ensued. Leap Castle has gone through many hands through the years. The current owners are in the process of renovating the castle and restoring it. During this process the oubliette was found, thank you to the O'Carrol clan. This location just happens to be at the confluence of two ley lines. Fae? Nasty deaths? Regardless of the reason, this castle is haunted. What kind of ghost is Krys's favorite? Kid ghosts and many, many more. There seems to be an elemental that makes it's home in the castle and the land surrounding it as well. Magick is afoot here for sure. Episode 6 of a new series of oral histories, led by Donal Maguire, curator of the Gallery's ESB CSIA, documenting some of the experiences and thoughts of artists living and working through the COVID-19 emergency. In this episode, artist Ruth Lyons discusses the development of Salarium, and other projects she has continued through the COVID-19 pandemic. This conversation was recorded on 19 June 2020. Born in Dublin, Ruth Lyons lives and works in County Offaly. She is a sculptor who works with a variety of natural and human-made materials. In 2019, works from her ongoing project Salarium were acquired by the National Gallery of Ireland, following their inclusion in the exhibition Shaping Ireland: Landscapes in Irish Art. About Artists' Voices: Life in a Pandemic: Oral histories are a unique record of an individual's personal thoughts and experiences. They are a valuable source of knowledge for researchers, providing insight and connection to a person's life and character. The ESB Centre for the Study of Irish Art, at the National Gallery of Ireland, builds, cares for and makes available the national record of art in Ireland for public study and interpretation. Oral histories are a type of archival record and form an interesting part of the ESB CSIA's collection. In recognizing the significant impact of COVID-19, the ESB CSIA is carrying out a series of short conversations with artists to document some of their experiences and thoughts of living and working through the pandemic. These conversations, led by Donal Maguire, Curator of the ESB CSIA, were recorded using technology that is conveniently available to the artist. The use of commonplace technologies for this project reflects the more general and increasing significance of these platforms for everyday communication. The ESB CSIA acknowledges the generosity of the artists for agreeing to talk about their life and work during this uncertain time. The presentation is based on my own experience as an artist/practitioner and the experience gained as Director/curator of Sculpture in the Parklands working with both Irish and international artists who have created new artworks that respond to the rich environmental, archaeological and industrial history of Lough Boora, County Offaly. For over 25 years my artwork has explored the subtleties of ritual and imagination. I create artefacts that often combine the textured surfaces and flowing lines of our past with the strong and austere forms of modern architecture. The ultimate goal is to create a work of art that is timeless, thought provoking and responsive to the human spirit. As Director and curator of Sculpture in the Parklands I have been an observer of artistic practice as opposed to directly involved in it. The sculpture park is located in a cut away bog that has been brought back to life over the past ten years through the introduction of lakes and wetland habitats. The sculpture project has added another layer of engagement for visitors to the area by combining visual and conceptual interpretations of geography, landscape, the industrial history of peat harvesting and the people who had lived and worked there. Besides permanent or time based work, the project has a commitment to commissioning video artists, composers, writers and performance artists to interpret and document this unique landscape, archaeology and industrial history.
