This week our Black History Month series continues with a look at the 1974 blaxploitation martial arts mashup, Black Belt Jones, starring Jim Kelly and Gloria Hendry. Kelly was coming in hot off of his run in the legendary Bruce Lee movie, Enter The Dragon and with Bruce dead and a public appetite ravenous for more martial arts movies it just made sense to spin off one of its stars to their own martial arts movie. Hendry was coming in off her turn as a Bond girl in Live and Let Die and a string of excellent blaxploitation movies like Black Caesar and Hell Up In Harlem. In this absolute cartoon of a martial arts movie, the mafia has bought into a valuable city project to build a new civic center in South Central Los Angeles but the only thing holding up the development is one holdout, a karate school that refuses to sell out. The mafia calls up a local loan shark to put the pressure on the school and when they accidentally kill the school's owner it's up to Black Belt Jones and the owner's daughter to team up, rip off the gangsters and get justice. Things get a little blurry between the beginning and the end but in spite of it flying by the seat of its pants and barely making any sense, the movie is a hell of a good time. Hugh Hendry, "The Acid Capitalist," returns to the Julia La Roche Show. Hendry breaks down his "macro compass" portfolio framework: 25% equities (overweight Japanese stocks after their 35-year breakout), 25% US treasuries (buying TLT after a 50% decline), 25% alternatives (Bitcoin over gold due to market cap), and 25% strategic cash. His thesis: the treasury market is so large (100% of GDP) that it's prevented inflation despite massive deficit spending, but AI will cause 20% unemployment within 2-3 years. That unemployment will force governments into redistribution mode, finally breaking the system's ability to contain inflation. He discusses why tech valuations are near peak, why the yen carry trade matters, and why sterling may be the first major currency to collapse as the UK's service economy gets hit hardest by AI displacement.Hendry founded Eclectica Asset Management, a global macro hedge fund that was pretty much uncorrelated to everything in the financial universe. Police Officers Should Not Have To Work Like This. Last year in in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, a routine domestic assault call turned into a life-or-death ambush caught on body cam footage. Veteran officer Captain Gray entered a multi-unit home with rookie Officer Jasmine Hendry to investigate suspect Scott Mason, 38. Seconds later, the encounter spiraled into chaos. Inside, the alleged victim pointed toward a hallway. As Captain Gray turned, Mason unleashed a shotgun blast, striking Gray with pellet shot. Instead of helping, Officer Hendry ran down the stairs, leaving Gray alone to face the threat. Mason fired again, hitting Gray a second time. The captain managed one return shot before collapsing from his wounds. As Gray lay bleeding, Mason approached with the shotgun, cursed at him, and then fled through a second-story window. Hendry eventually drove Gray to the hospital, where he survived after extensive treatment. Two days later, Mason was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault on a police officer, and more. He remains behind bars, facing life in prison if convicted. Eric Tansey, former cop and best-selling author, breaks down the footage and calls out the harsh truth: rookie police officers today are not prepared. Their hesitation, fear, and cowardly behavior put veteran officers in unnecessary danger. This incident is more than one shooting—it's a wake-up call about the state of policing, the dangers of poor training, and the cost of sending rookies into deadly situations they can't handle.
