In this episode, I reflect on the implications of Josepha Madigan's departure as the Minister for Special Education and whether the position will ever exist again. I also ponder on the INTO's survey on physical aggression. Finally, we move to Estonia and explore why they are now kings and queens of Europe and why Ireland won't be the best education system in Europe by 2026.

Like most children with an Irish mammy, I heard the phrase “self-praise is no praise” enough times to know that one simply shouldn't do it because it makes the person sound conceited and, well… stupid. As we grow we learn that praise is earned not given, to use another Irish Mammy saying. Which brings me nicely along to Norma Foley and Josepha Madigan's ridiculous description of the education budget which they are calling “innovative and progressive.” Welcome to my reaction to Budget 2023.

We were delighted to be rejoined on the podcast by Children's Rights solicitor and Partner in KOD Lyons, Gareth Noble, to discuss the "proposal" by Minister for State, Josepha Madigan, for special education centres. Gareth outlines why this educational apartheid is both wrong and unconstitutional. He discusses the thousands of children effectively locked out and denied their right to education. We discuss the ways to fix this, the need to recognise and assist the roles of SNA's and we look at what can be done to stop this needlessly cruel failing of our kids. Today's guest is government minister Josepha Madigan. I was almost fearful of having a politician on, somehow they don't get the same maverick kudos of someone leading a grassroots movement, often they are met with an eyeroll and some cynicism but the reality is that changing legislation and representing the will of the people is one of the most central and powerful changemaker roles.Myself and Josepha met when we sat together at a breakfast event for Spinal Injuries Ireland. I was struck by her warmth and her openness and when I contacted her office a couple of weeks later to invite her on she was immediately accessible and agreed.Jospeha is a busy woman, her current remit is Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion. She started out as a family law solicitor and witnessing the pain people went through during family breakdown, upon her election as TD she worked to bring about the divorce referendum in 2019 which saw an amendment to the separation duration for divorce eligibility reducing it from 4 years to 2. This had a massive impact on people's lives.Regardless of your political persuasion, this is a podcast based on people wanted to make a difference and I think you'll hear from Joespha that this is who she is, motivated by people and the stories they tell, she has positioned herself as someone who can make legislative and funding changes as well as using her voice to speak on issues in the media and the Dail. She spoke out recently about her personal experience of gender based violence, something she did not need to do but felt compelled to as she saw an injustice she understood.Today we talk about that, about the divorce referendum and the importance of accountability for our policy makers. This week on the podcast I'm joined by Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, Josepha Madigan. Madigan is an Irish Fine Gael politician and qualified solicitor. She spent 20 years practising law and running her own firm before being elected to Dáil Eireann in 2016. She quickly established herself as a rising political figure within the Party and was just three weeks in office when the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny invited her to partake in Government formation talks. As a back-bench TD, she initiated a private members bill that ultimately reduced the divorce waiting time in Ireland from 4 years to 2. In 2017, she became the first female lawyer appointed to the Irish Cabinet where she served as the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. I caught up the Minister late last year. She tells me what it's like juggling family life with a demanding political career, the people who inspire her in politics and why Article 41.2 of the Irish Constitution (regarding the women's place in the home)needs to be removed to reflect a modern day Ireland.
