Bob Corn-Revere, Chief Counsel for the Foundation of Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), joins Chris and Amy following the end of a First Amendment defamation case against the rapper Afroman. He prevailed in a nearly $4 million lawsuit filed against him by seven police officers in 2023. They claimed that songs and videos he released following a raid on his home were defamatory and an invasion of their privacy, even though the clips were filmed in his own home. 'It's hard to argue your privacy is invaded when you're in somebody else's home,' laughed Corn-Revere.

In this video, we talk about some updates in the Logan Paul v. Coffeezilla defamation case, as well as some (relatively) recent highlights from the CryptoZoo class action lawsuit. Specifically, the class action plaintiffs got a series of pieces of bad news over the summer. But, in the midst of that bad news, the court gave an explanation that seems to hint at some hope, at least for Coffeezilla's defamation defense. CONTEXT: After Coffeezilla exposed Sam Bankman-Fried and the collapse of FTX, he turned his sights on Logan Paul's crypto NFT project, Cryptozoo. He followed this with an episode of his podcast, Impaulsive, where he repeated the same threat. He has since taken down both videos and reached out to Coffeezilla to inform him that he's no longer pursuing litigation--but he still may have opened himself up to liability along the way, nonetheless. Description: It's a landmark legal victory! Megan Thee Stallion has won her defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz (Milagro Cooper) in a case that sets a major precedent for online accountability. We break down the jury's verdict, which found Gramz liable for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and promoting a sexually explicit deepfake video of the rapper. This episode explores the claims that Gramz acted as a "paid surrogate" for Tory Lanez, the emotional toll Megan Thee Stallion detailed in court, and the final awarded damages. Crucially, we discuss what this verdict means for First Amendment protection versus cyber harassment and the future of deepfake lawsuits against content creators.

In 2017, journalist Nick McKenzie heard rumours of executions and cover-ups inside Australia's most elite military unit. For the next eight years, Nick waged an epic battle for the truth to be acknowledged about Ben Roberts-Smith VC.Along with his colleague Chris Masters, Nick began an investigation which hinged on Australia's most famous, and most decorated living soldier, Ben Roberts-Smith, who served in the Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) from 2003 - 2013.By following the story, they were plunged into the defamation trial of the century. His fight examined evidence of bullying, intimidation, war crimes and murder, and took him across Australia and to Afghanistan. As he unearthed secrets Ben Roberts-Smith had thought he'd long ago buried, Nick had to deal with death threats, and powerful forces intent on destroying his career. He also witnessed attempts to silence brave SAS soldiers, who had witnessed their famous comrade commit unspeakable acts. For years Nick waged an epic battle for the truth to be acknowledged.Earlier this year, Ben Roberts-Smith lost an appeal against a defamation judgement, which found he committed war crimes.Further informationCrossing the Line is published by Hachette. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris. The Central Park 5, now known more accurately as The Exonerated 5, brought a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump for stating during a presidential debate that the five men had "pled guilty", had "badly hurt someone" and had "killed someone", in connection with crimes that had been committed in Central Park in New York City. All three of Trump's assertion were untrue. Trump filed a motion to dismiss the defamation case, and a federal judge denied that motion to dismiss (with the exception of one of the counts, which the judge gave the plaintiffs leeway to correct and refile).
