In this conversation, Andrew Tanner, a longtime practitioner and founder of the Berkshire Yoga Festival, shares his journey into yoga and spirituality. He describes how witnessing the positive impact of alternative healing practices during his father's battle with cancer transformed him into a believer in the power of aligning the mind, body, and spirit. Covering a range of topics that reflect his deep background in yoga over the past two decades, Andrew discusses the healing of injuries through yoga, cultivating inner wisdom, letting go of the ego, speaking one's truth, making better choices, and connecting mind, body, and spirit. These practices, he believes, help men become better versions of themselves and discover their Dharma in life. Episode 76 of TAAM is a deep dive into Yoga for Longevity, from the Taoist perspective, with my Yoga Brother, Andrew Tanner. Andrew shares his experiences with fasting to promote autophagy (self healing,) talks about the power of toning the gut-brain axis for healthy aging, and encourages seekers to integrate meditation on one's nervous system from the beginning of their physical yoga journey to create balance with all of the hatha practices. We dive deep. We laugh, drink tea, and egg each other on like two brothers karmically connected through lifetimes, for two whole hours - and we could have carried on for much longer. Andrew will be back on the show down the line to share more of his wisdom, his authentic vibe, and 20+ years teaching experience with The Art of Aging Mindfully Community.Listeners of TAAM will learn a lot about Taoist Yoga for Longevity, and how to "feel the body's pulsations" or "fields of energy/Qi," which make meditation much easier. We also chat about the Berkshire Yoga Festival, which he runs and I'll be teaching at in June 2025, which listeners can get a $50 discount on by using the code: “JAI”at checkout. In the battle for talent, how do you identify people who are likely to exhibit the qualities you want? How do you do the same with your existing employees? Assessments? Reviews? Rorschach Tests? Many of us have been part of organizations that sought to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their staff by utilizing personality tests and skill assessments. They've been around for a long time. In fact, the first modern personality test was applied by the US Army in the early 1900s to identify soldiers that may be susceptible to shell shock. Fast-forward a hundred years and a quick Google search reveals the dozens of tests, frameworks, metamodels, questionnaires, and the like, which all purport to assist people in understanding each other. Whether it is Myers-Briggs, DISC, True Colors, 16PF, Winslow Personality Test, PCM, the Five Factor Model or any of a few dozen other tests and assessments, the question I had was simple: is any of this useful? Along with Oliver Cronk, Whynde Kuehn and special guest Andrew Tanner, we delve into that question and attempt to see how practitioners or consultancies might apply the various models. Andrew is an Organization Development and Change expert who's practiced in the field for over 20 years through his firm, Summerhill Consulting, and is currently the head of Learning and Development for PCF Bank in the UK. In this episode: Why do organizations use these tools? How are they typically used? How effective are they? Why would a consultant want to understand their personality type? What do these tools tell us about the skills needed for consulting? Add your thoughts to the conversation on LinkedIn or YouTube. Be sure to sign up for email updates whenever we post new content. Real Trees, Real Talk - Why Nova Scotia Loves Real Christmas Trees
We're taking a divide into one of Nova Scotia Local breweries, Saltbox Brewing Company, and connecting their Balsam Blue beer and the Christmas Tree Industry. This interview with Andrew Tanner teaches us about Saltbox, how the beer is made, and the connection of local products to the industry!
The issue of affordable housing has been a hot button issue that has also been a hot potato. Municipal politicians are on the front line of complaints, even though it can be seen as a provincial responsibility. But that confusion can also happen when it comes to provincial and federal parties. Municipal governments are not partisan by nature, and this week the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities (NSFM) went looking for answers to some of their concerns. Andrew Tanner is a councillor in Bridgewater and is the Towns Caucus Representative on the NSFM.
Does the US need a divorce? We decided to play a thought experiement for the 36th iteration of On the Rocks Politica. Using the July 16 article by graduate student and blogger Andrew Tanner entitled, 'Fourth America is Almost Over-America Wants a Divorce', we consider the pros and cons of a divided US spliting into any nubmer of new governmental bodies. Would it be a two way split or numerous factions? What positive outcomes could there be for a re-constituted regional confederation or multiple republics? Read about the state of our democracy from Bright Line. The US has always had a fluid way of experiencing unity. From the Articles of Confederation, to the first 50 years of the US Constitution; from the Hartford Convention, to Abolition, the Civil War to the turmoil of the Great Depression. We took a look at some of the more likely scenarios such as the formalizing of a Trans-Pacific Confederation between British Columbia, WA, OR and Northern Califronia known for some time as Cascadia. Don't laugh, there are serious economic and social reasons that this has been consdiered in the recent past. Our point with all this? By talking through what a 'divorced' United States could be, we realized the ways in which we might be stronger together....and better people for it. Now, if we could stop divorcing oursleves from the very real responsibility we each have to each other for being the best engaged citizens we know we can all be.
