Don't Be Alone with Jay Kogen
King of Queens Writer/director Michael Weithorn - Learning to be THE BOSS

Don't Be Alone with Jay Kogen

Michael J. Weithorn knows a thing or two about making television work — and about what happens when it doesn't. The creator of The King of Queens joins Jay Kogen to talk about the years of trial, error, difficult actors, canceled shows, and hard-earned lessons that eventually led to one of television's most successful sitcoms. Michael shares how Jerry Stiller initially turned down The King of Queens, what it was like having Charlie Kaufman in the Ned and Stacey writers' room, recognizing Bryan Cranston's talent long before Breaking Bad, and what he learned about running a television show from Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg. They also get into the strange reality of creative success: after you finally make the hit show, are you allowed to stop trying? Jay and Michael compare The Simpsons and The King of Queens, talk about why writers keep creating long after they have something to rest their laurels on, and wonder whether any of it ever actually feels like enough. Plus, Michael discusses directing Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick in his new film The Best You Can, the disappearing world of old-school TV writers' rooms, and why comedy writers may simply be incapable of leaving a perfectly good dramatic moment alone. Michael J. Weithorn is an award-winning writer, producer, director, and creator of The King of Queens, with credits including Family Ties, Cheers, Ned and Stacey, True Colors, and The Wonder Years. Bio: Michael J. Weithorn is an award-winning writer, producer, and director with over four decades of experience in Hollywood television and film. He is best known as the creator and executive producer of The King of Queens, the beloved CBS sitcom that ran for nine seasons and 207 episodes, and has brought numerous other series to life across major networks, including Ned and Stacey, True Colors, and Weird Loners. Earlier in his career, he honed his craft as a producer and story editor on Family Ties and earned a WGA Award for his Cheers script and an Emmy nomination for The Wonder Years. His feature work includes A Little Help (2011) and the upcoming The Best You Can (2025), starring Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Judd Hirsch, and Ray Romano.  Beyond his creative work, Weithorn is a dedicated educator, teaching screenwriting as an adjunct professor at Columbia University's MFA program and UC Santa Barbara, while also leading comedy writing workshops for organizations including the Ghetto Film School and Inside Out Writers, an L.A.-based anti-recidivism program. Rivky explains her work uses the face as an “aesthetic blueprint” (skin tone, eyes, hair, contrast, texture, lines, and energy) to identify harmonious colors and styles, helping women develop signature style, reduce insecurity, and avoid trend-driven noise. She outlines seasonal color analysis origins and nuanced subtypes, shares how outside comments can disconnect people from their design, and discusses aesthetics as communication, first impressions, modesty, and dignity, citing stories about Rabbi Ishmael. Rivky supports enhancement tools like makeup or hair color while warning against “distortion,” critiques status-driven trend chasing, and emphasizes that true worth comes from being a part of Hashem and expressing inner beauty outward.EPISODE SPONSORSSwimplyRent a private pool by the hour, right in your own city — no crowds, no chaos, just your family or friends in your own space, with over 15,000 pools across the US, Canada, and Australia.Download the app or visit Swimply.com — code INSIDEOUT10 for 10% off your next booking!Shefa LivingWomen carry so much — marriage, kids, running a home, all while staying connected to Hashem and themselves. In this episode, Chris Howell sits down with executive leadership coach Montez Jones, Founder and CEO of TEZ JONES Training Solutions, to discuss what effective leadership looks like in today's rapidly changing workplace. Together they explore: Why great communication is still a leader's greatest advantage The costly mistake organizations make when they promote managers without developing leaders How personality differences influence team performance What leaders must understand about today's workforce instead of comparing it to previous generations Why leadership is less about having all the answers and more about helping people succeed together Whether you lead a business, nonprofit, government agency, or team of any size, this conversation will challenge you to rethink how leadership must evolve to meet today's realities. Donald Trump ran for office threatening to use mass deportations, closed borders, and emergency wartime powers to “clean up” American immigration. On Thursday, the Supreme Court's right-wing supermajority gifted him with two stunning victories in that crusade—effectively reshaping life for more than a million people living in the country with temporary protected status, or TPS, and forcing asylum seekers to jump through increasingly impossible new hoops. Those decisions came on the heels of Tuesday's chilling news for green card holders who might want to travel outside the United States in the form of Blanche v. Lau, where that same 6-3 majority ruled that border officers don't need clear and convincing evidence of a crime before throwing permanent residents into legal limbo. On today's show: Dahlia Lithwick and Mark Joseph Stern talk with Andrea Flores, founder of Securing America's Promise and a policy veteran of the White House, National Security Council, Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Senate. And they note the central theme emerging from SCOTUS' right-wing supermajority in perfect symmetry with Trumpism: When MAGA does explicit racism, SCOTUS goes conveniently colorblind, as with Justice Alito's refusal to find racial animus in Trump's statements about Haitians. In this episode, he makes the case that Mondays aren't something to dread — they're a fresh, blank page full of possibility.Michael shares a deeply moving experience attending Tyler's Timeout, a one-man show (that turned into so much more) performed by his 44-year-old son, Tyler, who has Down syndrome. The show was a celebration of unity, love, community, and new beginnings — and it ended with the entire audience waving colorful scarves while singing True Colors together. Michael kept his blue scarf as a keepsake. From appreciating quiet mornings and a good back scratch to climbing three flights of stairs in Ybor City, this episode is a reminder that gratitude doesn't always come from life-changing moments — sometimes it comes from simply showing up and embracing the ordinary.#TheDailyGrateful #MichaelCrose #MondayMotivation #GratefulMindset #DownSyndrome #TylersTimeout #TrueColors #NewBeginnings #Podcast #MondayBlues #YborCity #Gratitude #PositiveVibes #BoomtownRats #BobGeldof #FreshStart #MindsetMatters #DisabilityInclusion #PodcastLife #DailyGratitude

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on Shat the Movies, we're revisiting True Colors (1991), where friendship and ambition collide in a very 90s way. John Cusack and James Spader play college friends whose paths split as one chases power in politics and the other tries to hold onto his ideals. Gene and Big D break down the betrayals, the moral gray areas, and whether this drama still feels relevant today. Does it land as a sharp look at ambition, or just a polished soap opera? Tune in and find out. Full movie info below True Colors (1991) is a political drama directed by Herbert Ross and starring John Cusack, James Spader, Imogen Stubbs, and Mandy Patinkin. The film follows two friends from law school whose careers take very different directions, leading to a clash of ethics, loyalty, and personal ambition. Set against the backdrop of American politics, it explores how far someone will go to succeed and what gets lost along the way. A memoir can feel like a mirror you didn't ask for. We opened Christina Applegate's and found an unvarnished account of survival: a child actor who worked to live, a dancer who prayed with her body, an artist who hid behind “Christina Applegate” until truth demanded center stage.  We dig into the fault lines: body image and shame running alongside career highs; Sweet Charity on Broadway as a masterclass in grit after a brutal injury; pay inequity countered by quiet solidarity; and more. Her reflections on breast cancer and MS aren't wrapped in “warrior” clichés.  If you've ever performed strength because the world is allergic to pain, her confession will help you feel seen.We also sit with research tying childhood trauma to MS risk, not as final verdict but as a challenge to take our histories seriously. By the end, she rejects the persona and claims the name her people use—Kiki—then asks a question that lingers: Who are you?Hit play for a thoughtful, unsentimental conversation about truth, trauma, dance, illness, craft, and the fragile alchemy of happiness-with-sadness. Democrats have failed the test of basic human empathy once again, from spreading falsehoods about who Charlie Kirk was to speaking ill of the dead. With 118 Democrat House members refusing to honor Kirk's life, their response to his assassination has exposed their true colors. On today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Hanson examines the reactions of key Democrat figures—Reps. Ilhan Omar, AOC, and Jasmine Crockett—following this tragic event. “ The House has a tradition, when major figures—political or in the media or in the popular culture—are gunned down, to express empathy. One of the more horrific things that happened, recently, was in Minnesota, when the speaker of the Minnesota Legislature and her husband were gunned down by a—he was a private citizen, angry over abortion. … Every single Republican went on record saying this is atrocious, that a gunman shot these very liberal, Democratic legislators in the state of liberal Minnesota.  “ So, all people were trying to do after the death of Charlie Kirk, Representative Crockett, Representative Omar, Representative Ocasio-Cortez, just show a little sympathy, just put away the politics. And you failed that basic human test.”

One autumn morning, Momma tells brother and sister that the oranges, reds and yellows of autumn leaves are actually their true colors — that the green actually masks those colors until the fall.
