On a recent trip to lecture in Boston, I had the great privilege to visit the home of Dr Horace Wood ‘Woody' Brock. Woody was probably the first collector I ever met. Before I joined Christie's as a graduate trainee in September 1997, I visited the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair, at the time the most important art fair in the Western hemisphere, a place where the international great and the good would visit to buy the best the world's dealers had to offer. As I wandered around the fair, I walked onto the Asprey stand - probably the last fair Asprey's attended - and inspected a rather elaborate English clock with superb gilt bronze mounts. I don't remember the maker, but it was highly decorative. After a minute or two, I was approached by a tall, rather impressive figure in glasses, dressed immaculately in a dark chalk-stripe suit. He demanded - in his unmistakeable firm East Coast American tones - why I was interested in said clock. This had never happened to me, and I certainly wasn't expecting anyone to take any notice of me. Was he, perhaps, more interested in my girlfriend who I had dragged along and was rather bemused by all of this? No, it seemed he was curious - insistent even - to know what I was doing with my life, where I had been to university, and which department I was to be joining at Christie's. As I said that I was shortly to join the furniture department, he sensed a like-minded soul (and he was right). To my great surprise, I was invited to meet him later in the week for breakfast at Claridges, where I tried hard to keep up with his insistence that I will enjoy furniture - having never previously shown any interest in that direction. Woody was right of course, and it all changed after I joined Christie's in September 1997 and found that I really did enjoy the study of 18th century furniture, which Woody considers in our discussion here, to be the zenith of great design of almost any age.Ludwig van Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, ‘Emperor', 1992. Today we are talking to Sophie Wood – the fair director of the https://chelseaantiquesfair.co.uk/ (Chelsea Antiques Fair & Fine Arts) taking place March 23-27, 2022. And let's talk location location location because Chelsea is held in the Old Town Hall in London on Kings Roach in an iconic building. When https://2covet.com/ (2 Covet) – an online aggregator site for fine art, jewelry, collectibles, and antiques – bought the Chelsea Fair, they married technology with experience giving their vendors at the fair a multi-prong approach to selling antiques in the 21st century. As a fair director Sophie Wood, understands that it's all about the experience – not just the for the customer but the vendors. Toma and Sophie discuss how Sophie's international background gives her an edge in dealing with a diverse client base as well as how at its core antiques is a people business. As Toma always says, people do business with people not businesses. If you want to get ahead in antiques, it's about networking and ever judging a book by its cover! Sophie confesses she started an online floral business during the first lockdown and she talks about that entrepreneurial spirit. Toma adds that a florist plus antiques dealer is a genius idea and shares other ideas such as a clients antique shop slash wine store. Sophie agrees that you're not just selling antiques, you're selling a lifestyle and that includes passions and hobbies as well as art, antiques, and collectibles. The Chelsea Antiques Fair & Fine Arts has some of the best dealers in the world selling at the fair, and Toma tells that if you can't travel to London you can still shop the fair. Book a Virtual Shopping tour with Antiques Diva Vice President Gail McLeod to do customized trade sourcing at the fair. Sophie explains why a personal shopper can be an added advantage. And she goes on to give tips to dealers who sell at fairs – explaining how booth installation makes a difference. She encourages vendors to edit edit edit and remember less is more – as well as keep restyling and rearranging the booth. Toma emphasizes the importance of holding inventory back for the fair so buyers at the fair get never before seen inventory. Toma then explains that The Antiques Diva has grown up. The two discuss how the Chelsea Fair elevated the market positions of the Fair and the Antiques Diva & Co through good marketing and branding. The The Antiques Diva & Co now offers a full range of marketing and social media services from helping to build newsletter templates to assisting with Instagram or building new websites for antique dealers – in addition to their in person and virtual antique sourcing tours. Elevating your brand is essential for antiques dealers to garner new business and catch the attention of sophisticated client bases. It's not just about what you sell but how you sell it. Sophie closes the podcast by telling potential fair directors important advice on if they want to start their own antiques fair. Visit our sponsor, The British Shop! She was the Director for Clarion managing all aspects of the renowned Olympia Art and Antiques Fair, where she was responsible for a combined turnover of £4.2million covering all aspects of delivering the show including: sales, operations, vetting, security, marketing, PR and events. And if you don't already think Freya is superwoman – she also is the founder of the communications consultancy http://www.muse.com (Muse), which earned the Queen's Award for Excellence in Enterprise in 2014 for its work on clients including the Burlington Arcade, Frieze Masters and Masterpiece London, and she later co-founded Golden Squared Consulting. Known by its golden chandelier symbol seen in members' antique shops and at fairs, LAPDA is the largest organization of art and antiques dealers in the UK. Founded in 1974, it was the first antiques trade association to introduce a Code of Practice, ensuring customers' confidence with purchases. By using the website, members and clients can connect with others, as well as learning about the wealth of services LAPADA offers. Additionally, LAPADA does advocacy and lobbying for antiques dealers to Parliament. Toma sat down for a chat with Freya to discuss why the UK is THE place to buy antiques, the solutions in place for the global shipping crisis, and the confidence she has in LAPADA. They put care in the standards, down to the last touch guaranteeing the authenticity of each piece. Toma remarked that clients are often afraid to purchase from vendors they don't have a relationship with – and with LAPADA there is a reassurance not found elsewhere. Overall Toma and Freya shared their hope and happiness of returning to sourcing in REAL LIFE even though we are still in the midst of pandemic – an aspect very missed by both Toma and Freya. In our second segment of #AsktheShipper, Toma talks costs – a topic clients are always curious about – with Malcom Disson, Managing Director of http://www.thebritishshop.com (The British Shop). He dives right into the average costs of shipping from Europe to the US for both full container shipments and also just a few items. He also gives listeners a special discount on insurance if you mention The Business of Antiques podcast: £20,000 of free insurance when using The British Shop!

In Conversation with Black Box Projects welcomes experimental photographer Liz Nielsen to discuss her unique colour photograms and her exhibition – Liz Nielsen (small) – currently showing with Black Box Projects. Liz Nielsen's work is a contemporary application of one of the best-known avant-garde photographic processes - the photogram - which was first mastered by Man Ray and Maholy-Nagy at the beginning of the twentieth century. Each unique image is created without a camera in the artist's studio using handmade negatives and 'found' light sources. She calls her work 'painting with light' referring to the performative nature of its creation.Liz NielsenNielsen is part of this new generation of photographic artists that have returned to the essential elements of analogue photography and its processes as subject matter, reimagining the abstract and painterly potential of the medium. Nielsen's work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group shows in London (Black Box Projects), Chicago (Zolla/Lieberman Gallery), New York (Danziger, Laurence Miller, Yossi Milo and David Zwirner Galleries), Berlin, Dublin, Budapest, Paris (NextLevel Gallery). Join us for our second episode of In Conversation with Black Box Projects where we welcome Danish contemporary artist Adam Jeppesen to chat about his Flatlands Camp Project series, his new book Error, Object, Structure and his travels as a wandering artist. Adam Jeppesen is arguably best-known for his Flatlands Camp Project series which was born out of an epic 487-day journey from the north pole to the south across the America’s. The journey was mainly taken on foot, sometimes on bicycle, a little by car … but all of it was solitary. For over ten years Adam mined the content from this series to create seminal works such as X-copy, Folded, Ghost and Scatter. This experience went on to inform and inspire future series of works that reference themes and processes first explored in the Flatlands Camp Project. The images from this journey are of remote, rugged landscapes which are suffused with a sense of tranquility, reflection and contemplation. This series conveys a search for spirituality, but it also addresses the materiality and transience of the photograph as an object. Coincidence, damage and imperfection are essential elements in Adam’s work.Adam Jeppesen, born in 1978 in Kalundborg, Denmark, first gained international recognition with his "Wake" series, which was published in 2008 by Steidl in book format. In 2009, Jeppesen was nominated for both the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the KLM Paul Huf Award. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is present in the collection at the Denver Art Museum (USA), the Danish Arts Foundation, the National Public Art Council in Sweden, the National Museum of Photography in Denmark, as well as in numerous private collections. Adam Jeppesen lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Anna Kirrage began her career at The Fleming Collection before working for The London Original Print Fair. At the International Art and Antiques Fair in Dublin, dealers talk about the business: Stupid mistakes they made, clever deals they pulled and whether or not you can persuade anyone to buy anything. This is amusing, from the inside out (The Curious Ear)
