In this special crossover episode, Max Trescott, host of the Aviation News Talk podcast, appears as a guest on Dr. Tony Kern's Only Human podcast. The two aviation safety advocates engage in a candid, insightful conversation that bridges their shared backgrounds in aviation, safety culture, and leadership. The episode begins with a segment called “This Week in Safety Land,” spotlighting a tragic helicopter crash involving tourists over the Hudson River. The Director of Operations (DO) at the company involved chose to cease operations pending investigation, only to be overruled and fired by the CEO—prompting FAA intervention. Max and Tony reflect on this as a textbook example of the ongoing conflict between operational production and safety protection, a dynamic familiar in aviation, military, and corporate environments alike. They explore how profit-driven decisions often undermine safety, and how organizations with high-risk operations must prioritize a culture that empowers safety-conscious leadership. Tony shares a story of elephants at the San Diego Zoo sensing an earthquake before it was perceptible to humans—forming a protective circle around the young. Max likens this to the importance of organizational structures that support bottom-up safety communication. Drawing on his early career at Hewlett-Packard, he praises HP's open-door policy that encouraged employees to escalate safety issues when necessary. He stresses that open communication channels are essential, especially in high-risk domains. Max then shares his personal journey from a successful 25-year career at HP to full-time aviation after a layoff. What began as a side hobby teaching flying eventually evolved into a full-time vocation, spurred in part by a deeply personal tragedy: the death of a close friend and five others in a preventable aircraft accident. Max, who arrived on the crash scene within 45 minutes and attended multiple funerals that week, found a new purpose—preventing similar accidents by educating pilots. That experience drove Max to start Aviation News Talk, where he strives to deliver rich, actionable content on general aviation safety. His mission: to save lives by making safety knowledge accessible, engaging, and relevant to every pilot—from student to professional. He explains that his podcast is designed to offer “at least one nugget of value per episode” that listeners can apply immediately. Tony and Max discuss the unglamorous public perception of safety roles—often viewed as dull or punitive. Tony notes that safety officers are often assigned the job after incidents or during grounding periods. Max offers a reframing: don't lead with safety—lead with professionalism. If pilots strive to be excellent in their craft, safety naturally follows. “Do your job well, be curious, be disciplined,” Max says—traits that elevate both personal performance and safety outcomes. They turn to current trends, asking whether aviation is getting less safe. While total accident numbers may be down, Max points out that media coverage is up, and many general aviation (GA) accidents—especially runway excursions involving business jets—suggest continued risks. What matters more than raw numbers, he explains, is the accident rate per 100,000 hours flown, data that lags by over a year. For GA pilots, the accident risk remains significant, especially among newer or less experienced pilots. Looking forward, Max and Tony explore the safety challenges of tomorrow. Max debunks the idea of achieving a static “safe state” and explains that aviation is inherently dynamic—subject to changes in personnel, technology, weather, and processes. He highlights the importance of conducting safety assessments prior to changes in operations, procedures, or equipment. Quoting safety expert Todd Conklin, Max describes accidents as “the unexpected combination of normal aviation variability,” reinforcing the need for ongoing vigilance. Tony adds that while technological innovations—like AI, automation, and real-time training—offer efficiency, they don't guarantee increased safety. Often, humans simply push the margins when given better tools. He uses anti-lock brakes as an analogy: rather than driving more safely, people just drive faster. Similarly, faster, cheaper training methods could reduce experience levels without solving core human performance issues. The conversation closes with Max outlining the timeless characteristics of a great aviator: Judgment – the most critical trait, separating the skilled from the safe. Curiosity – a desire to learn, explore, and seek out knowledge. Discipline and consistency – following procedures and making flights “boring” in the best way. Situational awareness – understanding not just your own position, but what everyone else in the airspace is trying to do. Humility – recognizing that overconfidence kills and that learning never stops. Max emphasizes that aviation teaches life skills: staying humble, seeking excellence, and always being ready to learn. He ends by inviting listeners to consider flight training—not just for fun, but as a profound growth experience. Learning to fly, he says, can change how you see the world and yourself. Tony echoes the sentiment, encouraging listeners to take a discovery flight and explore the possibility. As the episode wraps, both hosts agree: while aviation may be unforgiving, it offers unmatched rewards for those who approach it with professionalism and passion. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Boeing strike ends as workers accept new contract The Machinists Union members accepted the contract with Boeing. Workers will get pay rises over four years. The union had demanded a 40% wage increase and restoration of a defined-benefit pension. The 38% wage increase plus a $12,000 bonus amounted to a 40% increase. The new contract does not restore the pension but promises that the next Boeing airplane will be built in the Seattle area. According to some analysts, the strike cost Boeing around $100 million a day in lost revenue. Boeing to repay furloughed staff, proceed with job cuts During the strike, Boeing furloughed some salaried employees, but CEO Kelly Ortberg said they would be repaid for lost wages. At the same time, Ortberg said a 10% cutback of the global workforce would proceed. A Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) spokesperson said it was informed that 60-day notices of job losses would be issued to its members on Nov. 15, 2024. SPEEA has reached a tentative agreement with Spirit AeroSystems on a new four-year contract that offers at least a 19% pay increase over four years. It includes provisions for greater increases if needed to keep up with labor market conditions, and a guaranteed minimum 5% bonus in the spring of 2025. Report Says Boeing Eyeing Sale Of Jeppesen As Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg looks to sell off non-core assets, Bloomberg quotes unnamed sources as saying Jeppesen is a candidate. Jeppesen is the world's largest provider of aviation charts and air navigation materials. Boeing may be looking to get $6 billion for the company. Søren godter sig over sin sejr over arvefjenden.

Riverside started off the year 3-0 with wins against AHSTW, IKM-Manning, and Griswold. Senior Grady Jeppesen looked as sharp as ever and the Bulldogs were building up to be the top team in the WIC. Their next four games saw them go 1-3 in conference play and it was time for Riverside to take a step back and revaluate. Head Coach Nick Kroon decided he would have his team to focus on shooting with the lack of size on this year's roster. Coach Kroon explained that the Bulldog's need to bring their best game every night considering how competitive the WIC has shaped up to be this year. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Margin-of-Error.mp3 A key focal point for the Riverside offense has been the stellar play from Grady Jeppesen who's averaging over 26 points a game and leading the team in assists at 46 and rebounds with 98. The progress and improvement for Jeppesen comes from the time spent in the weight room. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Grady-J-today.mp3 Second in points behind Grady Jeppesen is senior Mason McCready at 11.5 points per game. For his senior year McCready wanted to focus and taking better shots and having a larger role in the offense. McCready's refinement is something Coach Kroon is well aware of. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Mason-McCradee.mp3 Another player that has impressed Bulldog fans and the rest of his team is the only freshman starter for Riverside Cole Jeppesen. In critical situations Cole Jeppesen is normally assigned the most talented offensive player for the other team and his job is to lock them down. It is not an easy role, but one Jeppesen excels at. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Cole-Jeppsen.mp3 The WIC is especially competitive this year for the Bulldogs and still coach Kroon believes his team can win every team they face. They just have to be aware of the margin of error and play at their best. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Win-or-lose-every-game.mp3 Riverside is gearing up for a road game Thursday against the (0-1) Iowa School For The Deaf.
The Riverside Bulldogs are having a solid start to the season, going 4-1 through their first five games. In the Bulldogs most recent matchup against Missouri Valley last Friday, they came away with a scrappy 66-61 win. Riverside Head Coach Nick Kroon was happy with how his team responded to adversity. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Take-aways-from-MV.mp3 A key part to Riversides success early on in the season has been the offensive output from Grady Jeppesen. Jeppesen currently leads the team with 142 points, averaging 28 per game, and rebounds with 37. Coach Kroon has been impressed by Jeppesen's effort over the years. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Grady-J.mp3 Yet, Jeppesen isn't the only Bulldog earning praise and making an impact on his team. Other players are stepping up like Mason McCready. Last Friday he had 15 points against the Big Reds. Through five games McCready has 16 boards, 14 assists, and 6 steals. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Mason-Mccready.mp3 Riverside's next matchup is on the road against the 1-4 Audubon Wheelers Tuesday night. Coach Kroon is aware of the challenge that Wheeler senior forward Edward Miller poses. Miller averages 13 points and 8 rebounds per game. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Riverside-@-Audubon.mp3 The game will be streamed on KJANTV with the pregame beginning at 7:20 p.m.

My guest this week is Henry Jeppesen, a freelance literary translator, who studied Single Honours Swedish at Lampeter from 1993-97. We learn about Henry's Scandinavian background, find out why he fell in love with Lampeter and what happened on his Year Abroad. In his time at university, Henry sat on the Ents Committee and remembers seeing Zodiac Mindwarp and Doctor and the Medics perform – though we learn that he didn't quite manage to bring Oasis or Blur to Lampeter! We learn about the impact Lampeter had on Henry, including the Students' Union, and Henry reflects on what it would have been like to be at a different university. Henry talks about learning a language from scratch, what it was like to go to Lampeter from a small town, and growing up in Norfolk. We find out about the gigs Henry went to when young, including Def Leppard and he tells us whether he goes for the artists' old or new music. Another of his favourite bands is The Manic Street Preachers, and we reflect on the fanzines that existed when we were young. We talk about our chart obsessions. Like me, Henry bought the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles. He has always been into music, and he remembers the time that he went to see U2 in concert in Cape Town. Henry shares some of the advice he has been given along the way as far as translating is concerned and he talks about how he has been able to use his Swedish professionally. We also find out how Henry's parents met, how life has worked out for him and how he has reconnected with people through social media. And, at the end of the interview, Henry reflects on whether he is a looking back or a looking forward type of person.

Our paths crossed a few times so I got to know Laura, but we never had an opportunity to work directly. All that I knew for sure is that she was an amazing manager and leader. I am very happy to have her on the podcast.

The IMC Club's purpose is to promote instrument flying, proficiency, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share information, provide recognition, foster communications, promote safety, and build proficiency in instrument flying. IMC Club chapters offer monthly meetings in which pilots can network and share knowledge and experiences. The chapter resources and scenarios are being produced and distributed as a new program by EAA IMC LLC (“EAA IMC”), an Experimental Aircraft Association Inc. subsidiary, under a license from IMC Club International Inc. This will provide resources for new and improved program offerings that will enhance and expand the impact of the IMC concept. To provide continuity, support, direction, and programming, Radek is now the manager of flight proficiency with EAA IMC. Being part of the EAA family will provide the network, critical mass, and resources to take flight safety and proficiency to the next level. EAA IMC Club is presented by Bose Corporation and supported by Jeppesen. In the meetings, a scenario is given, nothing is artificial, the scenarios really happened! What would you do?
