Do you miss the creative freedom you had before life got busy with work and responsibilities? In this episode, I sit down with Audrey Steidl, first-time novelist, to talk about how she found creative freedom in writing after her career as an actress, television producer and years in the hospitality industry. Audrey shares how a paranormal experience in her 20s sparked the idea for her debut novel, The Fallen. It's a novel she started years ago, but didn't have the bandwidth to complete while she was busy working. We talk about making time for creativity in the midst of the daily grind, overcoming self-doubt, and why NOW is always the perfect time to indulge your creativity. If you've ever felt the itch to create something new but worried it's too late, this episode will encourage you to embrace your creativity at any age!

Just have a self-awareness.In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Enid Futterman and John Isaacs, the co-founders of IMBY, a revolutionary platform for hyperlocal journalism. IMBY, which stands for "In My Back Yard," empowers communities to create their own digital newspapers, promoting citizen journalism and community engagement.Enid explained, “IMBY is a hyperlocal network of websites for citizen journalism. It allows any community to create its own digital newspaper.” This model not only fills the gap left by the decline of traditional local newspapers but also provides a space for community members to share news, opinions, and events directly relevant to their locality.John elaborated on the origins of IMBY, sharing how their initial success with a local community magazine in Hudson, New York, inspired them to create a scalable platform. “The demise of local journalism is not just an absence of information but also a threat to democracy. Local news plays an enormously important role and its diminishment is a serious issue for the preservation of democracy,” John emphasized. This sentiment underscores the critical role IMBY aims to play in sustaining informed and connected communities. One of the most compelling aspects of IMBY is its support for citizen activists. Enid highlighted, “One of the biggest uses is among citizen activists who are trying to advocate for a cause, often aligned with our mission to build community with the values of localism, sustainability, and justice.”Currently, IMBY is running a crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit to expand its reach. Enid noted, “Honeycomb's focus on crowdsourcing local capital aligns perfectly with our mission to crowdsource local news.”IMBY's innovative approach not only addresses the loss of local newspapers but also reinvigorates the essence of community journalism. Their platform represents a beacon of hope for communities striving to stay informed and engaged in an era of media consolidation and declining local news sources.Through platforms like IMBY, the power of the press is truly placed back in the hands of the people, fostering a more democratic and connected society.AI Episode Summary1. Enid explains that IMBY is currently funded through local advertising and is exploring additional revenue streams such as subscriptions and merchandising.9. John and Enid discuss their successful crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit, which aligns with IMBY's focus on crowdsourcing local news.10. The Menil Collection organized a drawings retrospective in 2011; it traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Serra's hometown museum. The most extensive survey of Serra's films and videotapes was presented by the Kunstmuseum Basel in 2017. Serra was a guest on Episode No. 18 of this program. Shiff is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the director of the Center for the Study of Modernism.

Jahrhunderts. Maud Martha will ihren ärmlichen Verhältnissen entfliehen. After taking a degree in Documentary Photography at the University of Wales, Newport, Ivor Prickett began working in Europe and the Middle East, striving to convey and denounce the effects of war on the civilian population – on the people whose lives it ravages and uproots, whatever side they may be on. Initially focused on the private, domestic sphere of war's long-term social and humanitarian consequences, Ivor's gaze has shifted over the years towards places of forced migration and lands where people seek refuge, and then to the front lines of combat zones. His early projects focused on stories of displaced people throughout the Balkans and Caucasus. Based in the Middle East since 2009, Ivor documented the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt and Libya, working simultaneously on editorial assignments and his own long term projects. In 2012 he was selected for the World Press Photo Joop swart Masterclass, named as a FOAM Talent and selected by PDN for their 30 under 30 list. Travelling to more than ten countries between 2012 and 2015 Ivor documented the Syrian refugee crisis in the region as well as Europe, working closely in collaboration with UNHCR to produce a comprehensive study of the greatest humanitarian crisis in recent history. Most recently Ivor's work has focused on the fight to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Ultimately working exclusively for the The New York Times he spent months on the ground, particularly covering the Battle of Mosul, reporting in both words and pictures. His work in Iraq and Syria has earned him multiple World Press Photo Awards and in 2018 he was named as a Pulitzer finalist. The entire body of work titled End of the Caliphate was released as a book by renowned German publisher Steidl in June 2019. Ivor's work has been recognised through a number of prestigious awards including The World Press Photo, The Pulitzer Prizes, The Overseas Press Club Awards, Pictures of the Year International, The Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and The Ian Parry Scholarship. Most recently he was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet 2019 cycle and his work is currently touring the globe as part of the group exhibition. His pictures have been exhibited widely at institutions such as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Sothebys, Foam Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery, London and he currently has a major solo show at Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, In conjunction with the 2023 Fotografia Europea festival, for which the theme is Europe Matters: Visions of a Restless Identity. Ivor's show and the corresponding book is entitled No Home from War: Tales of Survival and Loss and features over fifty photographs taken in conflict zones from 2006 to 2022. It is the the largest show of Ivor's work to date, the first in italy, and it will be up until 30th July 2023.Ivor is represented by Panos Pictures in London and he is a European Canon Ambassador. In episode 203, Ivor discusses, among other things:His route to Newport and what he got from going there. How he got started and his strategy to get his work seen.Arab Spring 2011 and the lessons learned from that.Branching out and needing to get closer to the source.Mosul.The NYT and being asked to write.Going through times of wanting to quit. What keeps him doing it.Is an art gallery the right place for photojournalism? Can your work have an impact?Ukraine.Processing the witnessing of horror and adjusting to normal life.AI and its implications for photojournalism.Referenced:Christine RedmondJoe StirlingKen GrantClive LandonCheryl NewmanTim HetheringtonChris HondrosDavid Furst Website | Instagram“By the time it came to the ISIS work in Iraq and Syria, it was almost like I wanted to get closer to the source myself and see up close what it was I'd been investigating all these years and what people had been running from.
Determined to keep the youth of his church grounded in the Word during lockdown, author Erik Steidl found a little-remembered character in the Old Testament--Jonathan's arrow boy. Retelling that story through the perspective of this character gives kids someone to relate to while infusing the truths of that story into their lives. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. This Author Strives to Make Scripture Come Alive for Kids When Erik Steidl talked about writing his book, blog post by blog post, to keep the youth of his church in the Word during the distance created by lockdown, I knew I liked him. There's nothing more important than Biblical literacy, and making Biblical cultures come alive so our young people can understand the context of Scripture is a great way to ensure they learn to appreciate the stories that we sometimes take for granted. I love that Steidl used an almost unknown character--just someone mentioned in passing-- to bring the story of David and Jonathan alive. That is my favorite way to see Biblical fiction. There's little concern that your understanding of the actual Bible will blend with the story until you can't differentiate between them. His other series, the Philippi series, features people who have always fascinated me, and I'm sure he's at least on chapter twelve by now... right? *Whistles* The other thing that impressed me was Erik Steidl's laser focus on retelling Biblical stories for youth. Ayal the Arrow Boy by Erik Steidl Ayal the Arrow Boy tells the story of David and Jonathan from a never-before-seen perspective; that of Ayal, a servant in King Saul's palace. Ayal finally has his life going in the right direction. After growing up an orphan on the streets of Jerusalem, he finally has a home in the palace and a good job as a runner for Prince Jonathan. Everything changes when he overhears two men planning to kill David, a commander in King Saul's army and Jonathan's best friend. Now the race is on to thwart the scheme, save David, and return peace to Israel. Will he be in time? You can find out more about Erik Steidl and his books on his WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? The history of immigration to the United States details the movement of people to the United States starting with the first European settlements from around 1600. Beginning around this time, British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were imported as slaves. The United States experienced successive waves of immigration, particularly from Europe. Immigrants sometimes paid the cost of transoceanic transportation by becoming indentured servants after their arrival in the New World. Later, immigration rules became more restrictive; the ending of numerical restrictions occurred in 1965. Recently, cheap air travel has increased immigration from Asia and Latin America.Attitudes towards new immigrants have cycled between favorable and hostile since the 1790s. In episode 96 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering photography's need to be at the centre of the creative arts, setting up collaborative collectives, and the positive creative aspects of difficulty! Plus this week photographer Vinca Peterson takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Vinca Petersen got her first camera at the age of seven or eight. In 1990, age 17 she moved to London, telling her parents she was going to art school. Instead, she moved into a squat, and got involved in alternative politics as well as the rave/free party scene, occasionally working as a model in fashion spreads and music videos. Vinca met the photographer Corinne Day, who became a mentor of sorts, occasionally giving her cameras, film, and confidence to continue taking her pictures. She adopted a nomadic lifestyle travelling Europe, living in trucks until her son was born in 2005. Throughout, this time she took photographs, eventually collecting them into a book, No System published by Steidl in 1999 and reissued in 2019, when it was included in one of the first ever displays of photo books at Tate Modern, London. In 2010, Petersen created Future Youth Project, working with children in Thanet, Kent and in the Ukraine, where provision for children with learning difficulties has been limited. Her alter ego ArtNurse, popped up at the 2010 Paris Photo festival, Arles Photo and Brighton Photo Fringe dispensing gold glitter and administering vodka shots by syringe as well as dancing with strangers and selling postcards to raise funds for FYP. Before FYP, she persuaded the designer and founder of the fashion brand Maharishi, Hardy Blechman, to design and donate a monumental inflatable that she took to orphanages and schools through Europe, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Romania and Ukraine. Recent photo books include Future Fantasy examining her earliest years during the second summer of love, and Deuce and a Quarter, created during a road trip across the American South made with three girlfriends. Vinca has participated in multiple group exhibitions and solo exhibitions of images and this year her work will be exhibited at the Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol. Petersen has never worked to commission. https://vincapetersen.com If you have enjoyed this podcast why not check out our A Photographic Life Podcast Plus. We also discussed his time working on films in India and his projects Family Business, American Power, New York Arbor and his latest work Rocks and Clouds. A book collecting the work is due this summer from Steidl.
