Between 1911 and 1912, more than a dozen women were murdered on the streets of Atlanta. All were young, all were Black, and all were killed in a disturbingly similar fashion. Throats slashed, bodies left close to home, personal items untouched. At the time, police claimed they had no leads. Locals whispered of a serial killer - a theory the authorities were reluctant to accept. As panic grew, women changed their routines, and Black newspapers urged the public to stay alert. But the murders continued. This is the story of the man the press called The Atlanta Ripper - and the women whose lives were lost in a case that remains officially unsolved.Don't miss an episode—follow, comment, like, and share!Connect with us on social media @themondaynightrevue or email at themondaynightrevue@gmail.com.Explore our podcast merch: Shop HereSupport the show: Buy Me a CoffeeDiscover curated reads: BookshopFor ad-free episodes, minisodes, and exclusive perks, join us on Patreon: Support on PatreonWritten and edited by Corinna Harrod with Holly Clarke. In the years following the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot, a wave of terror rocked the city. Over twenty black women were brutally murdered, often in a fashion that mimicked the infamous Jack the Ripper murders twenty years earlier. My guest is Dr. Jeffery Wells, author of "The Atlanta Ripper: The Unsolved Case of the Gate City's Most Infamous Murders". He talks about the racially-charged atmosphere of Atlanta in the 1910s, the likelihood that the rash of murders were committed by multiple people and the connection between the Atlanta Ripper killings and the sensational Mary Phagan murder case.More about the author and his book here: https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/9781609493813/The-Atlanta-Ripper-The-Unsolved-Case-of-the-Gate-Citys-Most-Infamous-MurdersDr. Wells' Georgia history blog: http://georgiamysteries.blogspot.com/For a list of victims attributed to the Atlanta Murderer or Murderers, click here. Between 1909 to 1914 (and possibly longer), service women and young girls were heinously murdered in the Fourth Ward area of Atlanta by man dubbed “The Atlanta Ripper.” Rumors still remain about whether there was a single murderer or copycat murderers who took up the mantle, but one thing is for certain: no one was ever truly caught and convicted of the series of killings. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpod Hosted on Acast. July 1st: Atlanta Ripper Kills Lena Sharpe(1911) Death is always devastating but, when you come from a close-knit community, that death can sometimes rock the lives of more than just the family of the victim. On July 1st 1911 a man killed 1 of what would be many women in a community that was in the middle of exponential growth, deep closeness, and positive change. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_Ripper, https://crimecapsule.com/who-was-the-atlanta-ripper/, http://troytaylorbooks.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-atlanta-ripper-unsolved-american.html, https://creativeloafing.com/content-185128-cover-story-atlanta-s-jack-the-ripper, https://www.nytimes.com/1911/07/03/archives/eight-victims-now-of-atlanta-ripper-mulatto-women-slain-and.html

Almost everyone, even those who are not into true crime, can provide probably a couple examples of serial killers that have never been caught. Most people have heard of Jack the Ripper. In 1888 he murdered at least five women in London's poor Whitechapel district.Did you know that the equivalent of Jack the Ripper was prowling in the South of the United States about a hundred years ago? It is very likely that you have never heard this story. The murderer took advantage of the racism and segregation present in those years, spreading fear among African-American women. He was even petty enough to tell one woman that she was not attractive enough to be killed by him. His audacity grew gradually as authorities ignored his crimes, most probably due to his choice of victims. The Ripper killed around 20 young and beautiful women in the streets of Atlanta, mysteriously emerging from and then disappearing back into the fog. When we think of serial killers, for many of us there are a few names that pop into our heads immediately. One of the most infamous serial killers is Jack the Ripper who operated in the Whitechapel area of London in the late 1880s. His crimes were so gruesome that they caught the attention of people across the world, even here in the United States. Even today we can see evidence of his horrific legacy in the form of movies, books and TV shows which directly or indirectly lead back to Jack the Ripper. But here in the United States, we have our own ripper, yet despite the grisly nature of his crimes and a long list of victims, many people in the US today have never even heard of him. An examination of the unsolved mystery of the Jack the Ripper-style serial killer who terrified early 20th century Atlanta, Georgia. As Atlanta finished rebuilding after the Civil War, a new horror arose from the ashes to roam the night streets. Beginning in 1911, a killer whose methods mimicked the famed Jack the Ripper murdered at least twenty black women, from prostitutes to working-class women and mothers. Each murder attributed to the killer occurred on a Saturday night, and for one terrifying spring in 1911, a fresh body turned up every Sunday morning. Amid a stifling investigation, slayings continued until 1915. As many as six men were arrested for the crimes, but investigators never discovered the identity of the killer, or killers, despite having several suspects in custody. Join local historian Jeffery Wells as he reveals the case of the Atlanta Ripper, unsolved to this day. THE ATLANTA RIPPER: The Unsolved Case of the Gate City's Most Infamous Murders-Jeffery Wells.

By 1911, a serial killer dubbed the “Atlanta Ripper” had killed so many African American women, even the white-owned newspapers and white-controlled police department were forced to take notice. Yet, while they tried to catch the elusive killer, they would find themselves woefully unprepared to stop his wicked ways.
In the early 1900s, the city of Atlanta was heavily segregated and embroiled in racial tension. Things would only get worse for the black citizens of Atlanta when a mysterious terror began cutting down black women and leaving their corpses in the streets.

Episode -S2-22 The Atlanta Ripper of 1911 Most know of Jack the Ripper of London, Son of Sam, and Ted Bundy. But many are not aware of the terror of the so called “Atlanta Ripper” who started his notoriety in 1911 in the City of Atlanta. Seventy years later, the notion of a serial killer once again captured the city's imagination, when more than 20 young African American males were found murdered. Wayne Williams is now serving a life sentence after being convicted for two of the murders. His conviction came in an Atlanta that had changed drastically since the Ripper murders of 1911 and 1912. Although even today, 20 years after Williams' conviction, some doubts linger that he was the true serial killer or one of several killers. Tonight we discuss the Atlanta Ripper! We are blasted. Help us. God Forgive Us. FUCK WE FORGOT THE MUSIC!
The South has its beauty with dripping Spanish moss, massive oaks, thick woods, and vibrant green vegetation. Along with the remnants of abandoned mansions and decaying buildings—forgotten and buried in a time long ago—the South has more than a few skeletons in its closet. And its secrets keep crawling out of the grave, refusing to stay buried. After a recent trip to Atlanta and its hauntingly beautiful Historic Oakland Cemetery, I picked up a few books that uncover some of the Gate City’s dark past. This is the horrifically true story of the Atlanta Ripper.Promo: History Goes Bump---Music:“Somber Fight” by Joan Bjork: https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/8ZPMNsQ298“Ending” by Peter Sandberg: https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/wD9qZPgHgc“Where No Man Has Gone Before” by Jean Leonti: https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/PMF2aJELk3“Crossing the Threshold” by Kevin MacLeod (paid license): http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FabledCollective)

On this weeks episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how US private rocket company SpaceX has announced that two private citizens have paid to be sent around the Moon. The mission is planned for late 2018, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said, adding that the tourists "have already paid a significant deposit". "This presents an opportunity for humans to return to deep space for the first time in 45 years," he said. The two unnamed people will fly aboard a spaceship which is set for its first unmanned test flight later this year. Mr Musk said the co-operation of America's Nasa space agency had made the plan possible. He said the two passengers "will travel faster and further into the solar system than any before them". Mr Musk declined to reveal their identities, only saying that they knew each other and that "it's nobody from Hollywood". Then, Military bigwigs gathered in Orlando this week for the annual AirWarfare Symposium to discuss big plans for big weapons that do big damage. According to a report, the biggest unfunded project that U.S. Special Operations Command hopes to push through is a C-130 that’s equipped with a power laser weapon. Then, a Cumberand County, PA, witness reported an unusual series of “huge, bright, round lights” beaming to the ground level near her property with no sound that appeared to get her dog’s attention, according to testimony in Cases 82026 and 82029 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.Case was reported February 12, 2017, for an incident that occurred about 1:30 a.m. on November 15, 2016. Then, a young mother living in York, UK, says that her flat is haunted by an evil spirit. In fact it has been scratched her before. Now she want's to leave but the landlord will not let her out of her lease. After the break Kyle brings up the story of Atlanta's very on Jack the Ripper case of 1911. For four years in Atlanta, beginning in 1911, someone terrorized the African American community and became known as the Atlanta Ripper, a play off the name of the famous London killer in the Whitechapel district in the late 1800s known as "Jack the Ripper." For those four years, an unknown killer, or as some put it, killers, roamed the dark streets of Atlanta, preying upon young African American women, as well as some of mixed race. The list of victims swelled to over 20 people, as the city was in the grips of fear over where and against whom the fiend would strike next. Thanks for listening to Expanded Perspectives! In this episode we stick to serial killers in America from the Belle Epoque, this time in Atlanta, Georgia. A favourite topic of mine is unsolved cases and the Atlanta Ripper case is worth exploring.Website - https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/theserialkillerpodcast
For two years in the early 20th century, the black community of Atlanta was terrorized by a serial killer whose crimes eerily resembled those of Jack the Ripper. The killer was never caught.
