Welcome to Oaktober Fest, The Dark Oak's celebration of the spooky month of October! Every week this month, we will bring you a case that is sure to get you in the creepy mood. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ On April 18, 1943, local boys Robert Hart, Thomas Willetts, Bob Farmer and Fred Payne wandered into Hagley Wood, part of the estate belonging to Lord Cobham near Wychbury Hill, when they came across a large wych elm. The wych elm before them was ancient with a gnarled base and long stretched out branches growing in every direction. To the boys, this tree looked like the perfect place to look for their treasure. Young Bob Farmer climbed into the creepy limbs of an elm tree, and reached into the hollow of a tree to retrieve what he thought was a beautiful egg. But he was mistaken, and terror crossed his face when he realized he had discovered a woman's head. The mystery of the woman in the wych elm takes us through a trail of WWII spies, espionage, witchcraft, the cult, domestic violence and savagery. One of them climbs inside a hollow tree, looking for a bird's nest and eggs. What they discover is a skull and the remains of a mysterious woman. After 81 years, authorities still don't know who she is. This case if full of mystery, war spies, witchcraft, and even a cabaret singer. This is the 81 year old myster of Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?The Discovery in Hagley WoodOn that spring day in 1943, four young boys—Bob Farmer, Thomas Willetts, Bob Hart, and Fred Payne—were out exploring the dense woodland of Hagley Wood, searching for bird nests. As they wandered deeper into the woods, they stumbled upon an old, hollow wych elm tree. Curious, Bob Farmer peeked inside, and to his horror, he saw a skull staring back at him. The boys, shaken and frightened, swore to keep their discovery a secret. However, fear and guilt got the best of them, and they soon reported the macabre finding to the police. The Investigation BeginsWhen investigators arrived at the scene, they unearthed a nearly complete human skeleton inside the tree. The skull still had some hair and a few crooked teeth, and a piece of taffeta was found stuffed into its mouth, suggesting foul play. Authorities also discovered a shoe and fragments of clothing near the skeleton. Forensic experts determined that the body was that of a woman who had been dead for approximately 18 months to 3 years. She was estimated to be around 35-40 years old, and her cause of death was believed to be asphyxiation. The Strange Graffiti and the Name "Bella"The case grew even more mysterious when strange graffiti began appearing on walls around the area, asking, "Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?" The first piece of graffiti appeared in 1944, a year after the discovery, in nearby Birmingham. As more graffiti appeared over the years, the name "Bella" became synonymous with the unidentified woman in the tree. But who was Bella, and why was her body placed in such a bizarre location?Theories and SpeculationsWitchcraft and the OccultEspionage and World War II SpiesA Cabaret Singer/Nazi SpyA Case of Violence Against a WomanConclusionThe enigma of "Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?" is an 81-year-old mystery that refuses to fade away. Tonight, will be a treat as we discuss some of the most baffling unsolved murders of the 20th century with my special guest Jenny Ashford discussing her book Faceless. What is it about unsolved murders that still fascinates us long after the cases have gone cold? Is it simply that we enjoy being able to come up with our own theories about what happened to the unfortunate victims? Or are we intrigued by the terrifying possibility that the killers are still out there somewhere? The Faceless Villain: Volume One is the first in a three volume series that explores the most mysterious and disturbing unsolved murders of the twentieth century. This volume is comprised of the years 1900 through 1959, and includes all of the best known cases of the period, as well as many more lesser-known murders, all presented in a compelling chronological narrative that takes the reader on a grisly journey through the blood-soaked avenues of early twentieth century crime. In April 1943, four young boys were searching for eggs when they stumbled upon human remains stuffed into the hollow trunk of a wych elm tree. Six months after the discovery, the graffiti began appearing inquiring of the as yet unknown victim, “Who put Bella in the wych elm?” While people have posited answers to that question ranging from someone involved in the occult to spies, all possibilities seem fraught with a lack of concrete evidence. What do YOU feel is the most plausible explanation of how she got there? While this coverage is merely cursory, please check out the following website if you are interested in an extremely deep dive into the case: https://josefjakobs.info/

In 1943, the skeletal remains of an unidentified woman were discovered inside a hollow wych elm tree in Hagley Wood, Worcestershire. The victim came to be known as "Bella." The circumstances surrounding her death and the identity of the perpetrator remain elusive. Mysterious graffiti messages appeared in the area, suggesting someone knew more about the crime, but the case has never been solved. The eerie nature of the discovery, coupled with the lack of resolution, has fueled speculation and intrigue, making the Bella in the Wych Elm mystery one of the most haunting and enduring unsolved crimes in British history. ----------------- Head to the Strange Places home website, asylum817.com to keep up with all things Strange Places, as well as the host. Two years after the unidentified skeleton known as Bella was found in a hollow tree in Hagley Wood, a second bizarre murder struck the West Midlands. On February 14th, 1945, a 74-year-old Farmhand named Charles Walton was brutally slain in the nearby village of Lower Quinton. Scotland Yard deployed master detective Robert Fabian to lead the investigation. But what he hoped would be an open-and-shut case soon revealed itself to be an impenetrable web, made only murkier by centuries of superstition. From the outset, the case seemed to be cursed, whether by the phantom hounds that traipsed the countryside, or by the whispers of witchcraft and black magic that followed whenever anyone spoke of Charles Walton. On April 18th 1943 in Worcestershire England, (yes like the sauce no one can pronounce) 4 young boys looking for birds eggs crept into Hagley Wood. Hagley wood was a mysterious place. Located on the grounds of the partially abandoned Hagley Hall, Hagley woods were dotted with neglected temples and statues, overgrown landscaping and ancient stately trees. But one tree stood out among the rest. A tree almost entirely comprised of sharp, leafless twigs jutting out at severe angles, a gnarled, menacing, leafless wych elm. Most people would steer clear of such a thing, but the boys knew this kind of tree was the perfect place to hide nests. When they looked inside it's large and hollow trunk however, they didn't find birds, they didn't find eggs, they found a body, and unearthed a mystery that hangs over the village of Hagley to this very day.
