But there have been instances of it raining frogs and fish. But did you hear about the time when for two-weeks straight it rained rocks and stones? (Raining Rocks, Storming Stones) *** In the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” the ending… sorry, spoiler here, but it has been since 1977 so you have had plenty of time to see it… at the end of the film, the aliens drop off dozens of humans that they've abducted over the years, and then welcome a volunteer human to leave with them – like an extraterrestrial foreign exchange student program. It's a fascinating concept, an extremely well-written premise for the film… but could that actually happen? Better question… has it already happened? (The Zeta Reticuli and Project Serpo) *** It could be argued that while William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, was a real person in history – that his story is more legend than fact. But then, being a notorious outlaw, pretending to die, and convincing everyone you are dead – then living out the rest of your life until you were an old man… that does probably deserve the label of “legend'. Is that story the fact… or is it fiction? (The Billy The Kid Conspiracy) *** Stories of giant, winged predators in the sky streaking down and attacking children and even full-grown men have been around since… well… ever. Some don't believe it possible, but if you do a Google search for “man-eating bird” you'll quickly find out they were not only real – but alive not that long ago. Or, perhaps… still soaring the skies, looking for their next meal… especially in and around New England. (Man-Eating Thunderbirds of New England) *** We've all heard of guardian angels – the idea that each one of us has a personal, supernatural protector following us at all times, battling for our souls to keep us from spiritual harm, if not physical. But if that's true – could we also each have a personal demon as well? A being also battling for our souls to send us to hell? One famous witch hunter believed exactly that.

Orlando talked about the distribution issue in Atlanta and why that didn't all fall on Arthur Smith. He said the players were fans of Smith and weren't thrilled when he was fired a few weeks ago. Orlando doesn't think the Steelers will be a top 10 offense, but that's due to the quarterback and not the coordinator.

Hour 2: Is the Arthur Smith hire another example of the Steelers being afraid of the Steelers moving out of their comfort zone? Poni said he is surprised Eric Bieniemy did not get an interview, given what Mike Tomlin has said about him in the past. And it's pretty clear the Steelers did not cast that wide of a net – how many guys did they actually interview? Falcons inisider D. Orlando Ledbetter from The Atlanta Journal joined the show. He said the Steelers are getting a guy that will put together a good run game. Orlando talked about the distribution issue in Atlanta and why that didn't all fall on Arthur Smith. And will Mike Munchak join him in Pittsburgh? Are you worried that Smith couldn't develop Desmond Ridder when the Steelers seemingly have the same issue with Kenny Pickett?

Jacques Heath Futrelle, born on April 9, 1875, in Pike County, Georgia, was a distinguished American journalist and mystery writer whose legacy became synonymous with the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. His career unfolded against the backdrop of the early 20th century, where he initially made a name for himself as a journalist, contributing to esteemed publications such as the Atlanta Journal, the New York Herald, and the Boston Post. Notably, he pioneered the sports section of the Atlanta Journal. Futrelle's creative genius, however, found its true expression in the realm of detective fiction. He is best remembered for his creation of Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, affectionately known as "The Thinking Machine." Futrelle's life took a tragic turn when, returning from Europe on the ill-fated RMS Titanic in 1912, he insisted his wife Lily board a lifeboat while he remained on the sinking ship. His gallant act, alongside his subsequent disappearance in the Atlantic, marked a poignant end to a remarkable life "The Problem of the Stolen Rubens" by Jacques Futrelle was initially published in the Associated Sunday Magazine on February 17, 1907. This serialization marked the introduction of Professor Van Dusen, or "The Thinking Machine," to readers. The choice of a magazine publication was a common practice during that era, allowing authors to reach a broad audience through serialized storytelling. Futrelle's decision to unveil this particular story in the Associated Sunday Magazine contributed to the widespread recognition and eventual acclaim of his fictional detective character. In the early 20th century, serialized fiction in magazines was a popular medium for presenting literary works, enabling authors to engage readers over multiple issues. For "The Problem of the Stolen Rubens," this serialized format added an element of suspense and anticipation as readers eagerly awaited each installment to follow the unfolding mystery. The success of this story within the pages of the Associated Sunday Magazine not only showcased Futrelle's storytelling prowess but also laid the foundation for the enduring popularity of Professor Van Dusen in the realm of detective fiction. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Nov 3rd      Publish Date:  Nov 2nd Commercial: Henssler :15   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.  Today is Friday, November 3rd and Happy 73rd Birthday to boxer Larry Holmes  ***LARRY HOLMES*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia Georgia Journalist Jim Wooten Dies at 78 Mableton Mayor says 'Highly Likely' Citizens Will See Higher Natural Gas Prices MUST Ministries Opens Thrift Store in East Cobb All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: CU of GA  STORY 1: Georgia Journalist Jim Wooten Dies at 78 Renowned Georgia journalist Jim Wooten passed away at the age of 78. He had a long and impactful career, serving as an editor and conservative columnist at the Atlanta Journal and later at the Journal-Constitution. Wooten was known as the "voice of conservatives" at AJC and was actively involved in the GOP, offering his time and mentorship to young leaders. In addition to his journalism career, he served in the Georgia Army National Guard, retiring as a colonel. Later in life, he and his wife, Ann, restored an historic home and received an award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. A memorial service is scheduled for November 11. STORY 2: Mableton Mayor: 'Highly Likely' Citizens Will See Higher Natural Gas Prices The Mableton City Council is considering a 30-year contract with Austell Gas System, which could raise natural gas prices for residents. The contract is one of several franchise fee agreements being considered by Mableton with utility companies. The city collects franchise fees from utilities for using government rights-of-ways, and they are a significant source of revenue for the city. In this contract, Mableton would collect 3% of Austell Gas System's sales receipts, and the company is likely to pass that fee on to customers. The fees, though they may lead to higher utility costs, are necessary for a city that doesn't levy property taxes and require revenue to operate. STORY 3: MUST Ministries Opens Thrift Store in East Cobb MUST Ministries CEO Ike Reighard inaugurated the new MUST Marketplace thrift store in East Cobb. The thrift store was previously located in Marietta and has now moved to a 7,000-square-foot space in the Sandy Plains Village shopping center. PLEASE SHARE THIS EPISODE in your social media so others who loves strange and macabre stories can listen too!IN THIS EPISODE: You might have heard someone say during a severe storm, “it's raining cats and dogs out there!” Of course, it wasn't really raining felines and Fidos. Over his five-decade career, Shipp covered the civil rights movement and numerous political campaigns. He was known as the most influential political journalist in Georgia and the Southeast. Shipp began his career at WGAU radio station and The Red & Black newspaper at the University of Georgia. He faced controversy for advocating for integration and the admission of an African-American student, leading to his expulsion from UGA. Shipp later worked for the Atlanta Constitution and Atlanta Journal. He was respected for his investigative reporting, fearlessly challenging politicians with his sharp wit. Shipp's scoops included breaking the news of Jimmy Carter's presidential aspirations. Despite initial clashes, Shipp formed close friendships with colleagues like Dick Yarbrough..............……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: tax   Residents of Cobb County expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposed millage rate during a public hearing. The proposed rates for the general fund and fire fund in the 2024 budget are the same as last year's, but due to rising property values, homeowners would still face increased property taxes. Residents argued that higher property taxes would worsen affordability issues for homebuyers and renters. Concerns were raised about increasing rents and the lack of affordable housing options. The county's Chief Financial Officer, Bill Volckmann, compared Cobb County's rates to other major counties in the Atlanta metro area, highlighting that Cobb has the lowest millage rate and tied for the lowest sales tax rate. The county's Chairwoman, Lisa Cupid, defended the tax policy, stating that it favors homeownership but acknowledged the challenges with diminishing housing inventory and increasing rents. The hearings will continue to gather public input on the millage rate.   Story 3: mayor   The City Council of Mableton, a recently established municipality, is set to receive three days of training from the Georgia Municipal Association. The training will cover various aspects of running a city, including team building, municipal law, ethics, open meetings, municipal revenues, and more. The council will also hold a meeting to vote on an ordinance regulating hotels. The training was approved by the council, and the costs will be deferred until the following year. Additionally, the council passed several items creating the foundational elements of Mableton's code of ordinances, defined legal terms, and established rules for conducting business, policies, budgeting, and contracts. Franchise rights were granted to Austell Natural Gas System, and the council announced the establishment of a bank account for the city. The council members attended the GMA Convention, where they received support from other cities' officials. The city is in the process of setting up a website and distributing meeting agendas in advance. The council asks for patience as they navigate the early stages of city governance.......read more on this story at mdjonline.com..........….   we'll be right back   Break: ESOG - Dayco – G.O.N.   STORY 4: documentary   Spencer Herron, a former teacher at Kell High School in Cobb County, Georgia, who was convicted of sexually assaulting one of his students, is the subject of a three-part ABC News documentary series titled "Betrayal: The Perfect Husband." The series, available for streaming on Hulu, is based on the podcast of the same name by Herron's ex-wife, Jenifer Faison, who discovered his infidelity and crimes in 2018. Faison produced the podcast and collaborated on the TV series to empower other victims. The final episode features the voice of the female student who accused Herron of assault. Herron pleaded guilty to sexual assault in 2019 and was sentenced to prison and probation. The series also sheds light on Herron's extramarital affairs. He has since been released on parole but must register as a sex offender. The Cobb County School District expressed satisfaction with the justice served, emphasizing its commitment to student safety.     STORY 5: sewer   A sewer line in Cobb County, near East Cobb Park, experienced a structural failure, resulting in an overflow of sewer water into Sewell Mill Creek. The incident occurred on Friday near Pimlico Court in east Cobb. Approximately 152,750 gallons of sewer water overflowed into the creek. To address the issue, crews installed a bypass pump and stopped the overflow by early Saturday morning. Cobb County has notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and is following their protocols for such events. County staff is monitoring the bacteria levels in the creek, and residents are advised to avoid exposure to the creek at East Cobb Park and south of the park.   Story 6: truist   Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the 2025 All-Star Game, according to Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Rob Manfred. This comes after the city lost the opportunity to host the 2021 Midsummer Classic due to controversy surrounding changes in Georgia's voting laws. Truist Park, the home stadium of the Atlanta Braves, is being considered as the potential venue for the 2025 game. Other sites under consideration include Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston. Atlanta previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1972 and 2000. Gone With The WindGone With The Wind Full Book Introduction The novel uses the American Civil War as a backdrop and the life of protagonist Scarlett O'Hara as its main plot to depict the war's impact on Southern plantation owners, as well as the process of post-war reconstruction. In so doing, it paints the portrait of a resilient and intelligent female character who is unafraid to subvert unjust norms, and who always looks earnestly to the future without clinging to the past. Not only does it depict the classic love story between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, but it also vividly portrays the profound changes in the politics, economy, ethics and everyday life that were unfolding in America's Confederate South at the time. Author : Margaret MitchellMargaret Mitchell, an illustrious American classic female writer, was born into a family of lawyers in Atlantic City, Georgia. She studied at various institutions, including Washington Seminary and Smith College in Massachusetts, and eventually earned the title of Doctor of Literature. She worked as a journalist at The Atlanta Journal, a job she quit after getting married to focus on writing. Then, after ten long years of work, she completed her classic novel, Gone with the Wind, the only masterpiece in her life, which secured her place amongst the greats in the history of literature forevermore. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we unlock the novel “Gone with the Wind”. The novel's author, Margaret Mitchell, was born in Atlantic City, Georgia in the southern United States. As a youth, she frequently overheard her father discussing the Civil War in the South with others, and as a result, she developed a keen interest in history. Thereafter, she devoted herself to studying the history of the Civil War, as well as what social life in the South, especially Georgia, was like during the Reconstruction era that followed. After she married, persuaded by her husband, she used her grandmother, Annie Fitzgerald Stephens, as inspiration to create the classic literary female character Scarlett O'Hara as the heroine in her masterpiece Gone with the Wind. It was a phenomenon. In the year following its publication in 1936, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize as well as the National Book Award, and millions of copies have been sold. Shortly after winning the awards, the novel was adapted for the big screen and ultimately won a total of 10 Oscar Awards, becoming a movie classic in its own right. Originally, the author titled the book Tomorrow is Another Day, a phrase that summed up the life philosophy of its protagonist, Scarlett. In the process of double-checking the book's historical facts and plotlines, Mitchell decided to change the book's title to Gone with the Wind, after being enchanted by a line from the poem Cynara by American poet Ernest Dowson which reads “I have been faithful to thee, Cynara! In my fashion, I have forgot much, Cynara! Gone with the wind.” Mitchell likened the war to a hurricane that swept across the South. Amidst this hurricane, the lives of the Southern nobility were irrevocably altered, and the book portrayed the challenging transition from slavery to capitalism in the region. The novel's portrayal of women as resilient, independent and willing to tirelessly fight for better lives for themselves and their families makes this novel a timeless classic. Upon its publication, the US was recovering from the Great Depression, a period of hardship that President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was unable to alleviate. As a result, the unrelenting spirit exemplified by Scarlett served as a great...

Tonight's special guest is Erica Ortiz-Seiffert from Marietta, Georgia, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse by a religious cult that her biological mother was, and still is, a part of. Erica is 38 yrs old now, and was abused beginning as a child of 4 lasting until she was 12 by a member of the clergy. "I was prohibited from saying anything," she says, "for fear that the church/cult would get bad publicity." She was threatened. "My mother fell in line and did anything to protect the church." Erica felt unsafe and wasn't able to trust anyone. "My adolescent years were full of rebellion and self soothing. I put myself in bad situations, always running away from home, trying to escape my hellish reality." She didn't have a bond or relationship with her parents. "To this day I don't have a relationship with my mother, but with my father I'm grateful that we are in each other's lives. I'm estranged from most of my family because we don't see eye to eye." Now she advocates for other victims by raising awareness about the cult itself. It's still operating even though their leader has been convicted of child sex crimes and was given 16 years in prison. But Erica wants more aggressive penalties for CSA and supports an unlimited statute of limitations so people can get justice no matter how much time has passed. She was interviewed for an article in the Atlanta Journal, and a new HBO documentary came out recently about the cult, it's survivors and what is being done to help them. "My hope is to let others know they are not alone."

Susan is Becky and Brooksie's cousin. Here's Susan according to Susan. Susan is essentially a split personality: a highly skilled journalist from big city Atlanta who now spends her time raising bees and chickens in the rural north Georgia mountains. Writing and gardening have always been her passions and somehow she managed to make a living with the former which now makes doing the later full time possible. Specifically, she spent 30 years as a reporter and editor at The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, with 10 years of that as the business editor and three years as Home and Garden editor. Much of the rest was spent writing about everything from crack cocaine in Atlanta's housing projects to how to refinish a floor. She's also a lesbian soccer mom (mother of two young men and a young woman of whom she's very proud) with the enduring two-sided family value that can be expressed as follows: the more people who love you, the better off you are; the more people you love, the better off you are. ©2020-2021 Cronecast Podcast Network | Music ©2008 Brooksie Wells

This week at In The Past Lane, the American History podcast, we learn about the film “Gone With The Wind,” its dark racist themes, and how African Americans organized protests against the film when it debuted in 1939. And we also take a look at some key events that occurred this week in US history, like the landmark Supreme Court decision, Marbury vs. Madison, the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by members of the American Indian Movement, and the swearing in of Hiram Revels as the first African American member of the U.S. And birthdays, including February 24, 1928: Michael Harrington February 26, 1846: Buffalo Bill February 27, 1902: Marian Anderson For more information about the In The Past Lane podcast, head to our website, www.InThePastLane.com  Feature Story: Racism, History, and “Gone With The Wind” Eighty years ago this week, on February 29, 1940, the film "Gone with the Wind" swept the Academy Awards. The blockbuster film, one of several classics to come out in the remarkable year of 1939 (which also included "Stagecoach" and "The Wizard of Oz"), was based on the best-selling book by Margaret Mitchell.  Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1900.  Her parents imparted to her very different influences. From her father, a prominent lawyer and president of the Atlanta Historical Society, she grew up listening to stories about old Atlanta and glories of the Confederacy.  From her mother, a women of more radical leanings who was active in the suffrage movement, Mitchell developed her independent personality. After studying briefly at Smith College in Massachusetts, she returned to Atlanta and became one of the first women to land a job as a journalist for the Atlanta Journal.  In 1925 she married John Marsh and one year later, while recovering from an ankle injury, she began writing a work of fiction that became Gone with the Wind. Mitchell actually finished the 1,000-page manuscript in 1926, but had trouble finding a publisher.  The book was finally published in 1935 and became an instant hit, selling one million copies within six months.  The following year it won the Pulitzer Prize.  By the time of her death in 1949, more than eight million copies had been sold in forty different countries. The essential story is by now familiar to most.  In the beginning, the reader is immersed in a idyllic world of the antebellum South and the plantation-owning elite.  But when the Civil War breaks out, the brave sons of the South march off to fight the Yanks and the old South begins to crumble.  Within this drama is the story of the tempestuous Scarlett O'Hara and her fight both to save her family plantation, the much-loved Tara, and to win the heart of the strong and dashing Rhett Butler. With the success of the book, a film adaptation was inevitable.  Mitchell sold the film rights to the producer David O. Selznick for $50,000, and later received another $50,000 in royalties. News of the forthcoming film generated a lot of excited anticipation among fans of the book. But not all Americans were thrilled. African Americans rightly understood Mitchell’s book as a deeply racist depiction of a “Lost Cause” version of slavery, the Confederacy, and Reconstruction. In her telling, enslaved African Americans were simple-minded people who were content with slavery and loved their white owners. And she celebrated the Ku Klux Klan as an organization that rescued the South from the alleged depredations of emancipated blacks and Northern carpetbaggers. African Americans knew that it was this twisted version of the Civil War and Reconstruction that was used by white supremacists to justify Jim Crow, lynching, and segregation. So, they mobilized against GWTW long before the filming began. They wrote letters to David Selznick, the film’s famed producer, urging him to drop the project. "We consider this work to be a glorification of the old rotten system of slavery, propaganda for race-hatreds and bigotry, and incitement of lynching," wrote one group from Pittsburgh. Several African American newspapers threatened to organize a boycott of not just GWTW, but any film made by Selznick. The pressure didn’t stop the film from being made, but it did convince Selznick to – very reluctantly – delete the n-word from the script. GWTW premiered on December 15, 1939 in Atlanta and quickly broke all existing box office records. For white Americans, the film represented a compelling fusion of romance and history. For many African Americans, however, GWTW was just what they feared it would be: a racist technicolor extravaganza that told a white supremacist version of the history of slavery, the Confederacy, and Reconstruction. It was, they charged, nothing more than a milder and prettier version of the original American blockbuster, The Birth of A Nation, which had been released in 1915. That infamous film celebrated the Ku Klux Klan as heroes who saved the South from the horrors of racial equality. GWTW avoided any references to the KKK, but it did present enslaved African Americans as happy and content people who loved their white “owners.” These characteristics are embodied in the role of Mammy, an enslaved woman in the O’Hara household who remains cheerfully devoted to Scarlett and the family through all their travails. In the film, there’s no evidence of the violence, coercion, and exploitation that actual slavery was based upon. Mammy was played by Hattie McDaniel and she received both praise and criticism from African American leaders and writers. Some adopted a practical position, arguing that because there were so few roles in Hollywood available for African Americans, black actors should seize any opportunity that came their way. Others, however, said the portrayal of black characters in GWTW was demeaning and that it played to racist stereotypes. Hattie McDaniel herself admitted she was conflicted, but ultimately decided to make the most of the opportunity. Nonetheless, many African Americans participated in protests outside of theaters showing GWTW. They carried signs that took aim at its rosy depiction of slavery. "YOU'D BE SWEET TOO UNDER A WHIP!" read one sign carried outside a Washington, DC theater. "Gone With the Wind glorifies slavery" read another. At the Academy Award ceremonies in 1940, "Gone with the Wind" won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.  Its director, Victor Fleming, earned Best Director honors, while Vivien Leigh won Best Actress for her portrayal of Scarlett. And here’s where things got complicated: Best Supporting Actress went to Hattie McDaniel for her portrayal of Mammy. On the one hand, McDaniel made history by becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award. On the other, she did so by playing what critics then and now saw as a racist caricature of an enslaved woman.  Hattie McDaniel responded to the criticism by arguing that Hollywood would have found someone to play the role, if not her. And, she said, she did her best to portray Mammy as a positive character. As she put it: “You can best fight any existing evil from the inside.” The next black woman to win an Academy Award? Halle Berry more than 60 years later in 2001. As for Margaret Mitchell, she never wrote another novel (hence the expression, "that's all she wrote") and despite her fame, lived a quiet life with her husband.  "Gone with the Wind," however, lived on. The book remained in print year after year through countless editions.  The film likewise enjoyed several revivals.  But with the civil rights movement of 1960s and 1970s came more scrutiny of the racism in the book and film. This scrutiny intensified as a new generation of historians rejected the Lost Cause version of slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, in favor of an interpretation that exposed the violence and cruelty of slavery and the remarkable success of Reconstruction that was ultimately overthrown by a white supremacist counter-revolution that imposed the Jim Crow racial order. GWTW still has fans – including, apparently, President Trump who just a few days ago slammed the Academy Awards for awarding a South Korean film, Parasite, the Best Picture honor. Trump said, “Can we get ‘Gone With the Wind’ back, please?” But GWTW is now increasingly seen as a relic of a time when the nation was thoroughly segregated, when most African Americans could not vote, and when most white Americans considered the South’s defeat in the Civil War, not a victory for human rights and democracy, but rather a tragedy unjustly visited upon a noble people. February 24, 1803 Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Marshall issued his landmark ruling, “Marbury vs Madison.” The specifics of the case are almost irrelevant. What mattered was that Marshall claimed – largely out of thin air – that the Supreme Court had the power of “judicial review” that is, the power to declare laws constitutional or unconstitutional. No such power is mentioned in the Constitution, but Marshall’s declaration went unchallenged and over time came to be accepted as fact. This, by the way, is a bit of history that will make any so-called “originalist” very uncomfortable. And if you want to learn more on this topic, check out ITPL Episode 94.   February 25, 1870 – 150 years ago – Hiram Revels of Mississippi became the first African American sworn in as a member of the US Senate. Revels had been born a free man in 1827 and grew up to be an educator and minister. He settled in Mississippi after the Civil War and entered politics. His arrival in the Senate symbolized the revolution of multiracial democracy that was taking hold in the post-Civil War South during Reconstruction as millions of emancipated African Americans voted and hundreds won political office. But the racist opposition that Revels and the other African American members of Congress faced foretold the eventual counter-revolution that eventually re-imposed white supremacy in the South. February 27, 1973 - some 200 members of the American Indian Movement occupied the town of Wounded Knee in South Dakota. They were demanding justice for Native Americans and chose Wounded Knee – the site of an 1890 massacre of hundreds of Native Americans by the US military – for its symbolic value. Police and federal marshals soon surrounded the protestors, beginning a prolonged standoff that involved frequent exchanges of gunfire. The protestors eventually surrendered after 71 days. Their demands were not met, but the incident did bring attention to the deplorable state of affairs on many reservations.  Quick Events Feb 24, 1868 The House of Representatives voted to impeach President Andrew Johnson Feb 25, 1836 Samuel Colt received a patent for his repeating revolver Mar 1, 1961 President JFK established the Peace Corps Notable people were born this week in American history   Feb 24, 1836 - artist Winslow Homer was born in Boston, MA. Homer is one of this historian’s top two favorite American artists. He painted and drew some really important works in the post-Civil War American South, especially scenes depicting the lives of emancipated African Americans. Later he focused on seascapes along the New England coast. And I know you’re wondering – who’s my other top two artist? Edward Hopper, of course. And here’s a fun fact that might explain my affinities: both Homer and Hopper painted some of their most remarkable works in my hometown, the seaside city of Gloucester, MA. February 24, 1928 - writer, social activist, and socialist leader Michael Harrington, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Harrington – who incidentally graduated from the college where I work – College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA - is best known for his landmark book about the extensive but hidden poverty in the United States, The Other America (1962). This work was a major inspiration for the anti-poverty measures undertaken by the JFK and LBJ administrations in the mid-1960s. February 26, 1846 - western scout, buffalo hunter, and showman William Cody, aka “Buffalo Bill,” was born in LeClaire, Iowa. Cody was working in the west as a guide in the 1870s when a writer in NYC named Ned Buntline began publishing dime novels of western adventures featuring a character loosely based on him named Buffalo Bill. Cody eventually went to NYC to perform on stage as Buffalo Bill. And in 1883, now keenly aware of the insatiable appetite among Americans for tales of the Old West, he founded Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Essentially a western-themed circus, it dazzled audiences for the next 35 years, playing a major role in popularizing many myths about the American west and the frontier. Feb 27, 1902 the great African American singer Marian Anderson was born in Philadelphia. Anderson was a world-famous contralto in the late 1930s when an effort to schedule one of her performances at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC was blocked by the group that controlled the venue: The Daughters of the American Revolution. They refused to allow an African-American to sing at the historic site. So, in stepped Eleanor Roosevelt, who arranged to have Anderson sing an outdoor, Easter Sunday concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Thousands turned out for the concert and millions listened to it on national radio. Years later, Marion Anderson said, “I forgave the DAR many years ago. You lose a lot of time hating people.” Quick birthdays:   Feb 24, 1885 Admiral of the US Navy Chester Nimitz Feb 25, 1888 diplomat and Sec of State John Foster Dulles Feb 28, 1901 Nobel Prize winning chemist, Linus Pauling The Last Word Let’s give it to Hiram Revels, who 150 years ago this week became the first African American to serve in the US Congress. Here’s an excerpt from a speech he gave in 1871 in which he noted the bitter racism that African Americans faced during Reconstruction: “I find that the prejudice in this country to color is very great, and I sometimes fear that it is on the increase. For example, let me remark that it matters not how colored people act, it matters not how they behave themselves, how well they deport themselves, how intelligent they may be, how refined they may be—for there are some colored persons who are persons of refinement; this must be admitted—the prejudice against them is equally as great as it is against the most low and degraded man you can find in the streets of this city or in any other place. This Mr. President, I do seriously regret. And is this prejudice right? Have the colored people done anything to justify the prejudice against them that does exist in the hearts of so many white persons, and generally of one great political party in this country? The Deep End of FlavorRecipes and Stories from New Orleans’ Premier Seafood ChefBy Tenney Flynn with Susan Puckett Intro: Welcome to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book with Suzy Chase. She's just a home cook in New York City, sitting at her dining room table talking to cookbook authors.Tenney Flynn: My name is Tenney Flynn. I'm the chef of GW Fins fine dining seafood restaurant in New Orleans, where we have just started our 18th year business, and we're going to talk about my cookbook, The Deep End of Flavor.Suzy Chase: Inspired by vibrant flavors of New Orleans and tropical climates, you have included your favorite techniques for creating fabulous seafood-centered meals in this cookbook. So let's dive in. Get it? Dive in?Tenney Flynn: Okay. I do like to dive.Suzy Chase: I know. Yeah, we're definitely going to talk about that. But I'm so happy that you're talking about looking beyond salmon and tilapia. I think it's safe to say we're all slightly sick of salmon and tilapia, right?Tenney Flynn: Well, I'm not sick of tilapia, because I don't eat it. I don't recognize its existence, but that's easier for me to do in New Orleans. And I think I say something in the book like, "There's always a better choice than tilapia, no matter where you are," either in the frozen or the fresh section. Salmon, I like salmon, and if I lived in the Pacific Northwest I would have nothing but wild salmon, but it's my experience that even if I'm willing to pay the money for these wild varieties, by the time they get east, they're not really worth it. I'm perfectly happy with high-quality, farm-raised Atlantic salmon. We usually buy it from Ireland or Scotland. And I've got recipes... I've got a recipe in the book that's great for that. It's cold-smoked and grilled, and it's made believers out of a lot of people. But 70% of our menu at Fins is out of the Gulf of Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico supplies 66% of the edible fin fish varieties in the U.S., which, you know, you can tell it right away if it's 66%, then it's more than the East Coast, the West coast, Alaska, and Hawaii put together. Alaska has more tonnage, but we certainly have more varieties.Suzy Chase: I don't like fish, but I like your fish.Tenney Flynn: I was about to say, "You're telling me you don't like fish. I take that as a personal challenge."Suzy Chase: No, that's a quote that you hear so much.Tenney Flynn: I do, and I like it. And usually those people come from places where fish isn't readily available. Certainly I grew up with bad fish. It used to come in these oblong boxes. I actually thought fish was oblong. And my mother would thaw it out, and then she would, you know, ruin it one way or another. And it wasn't that good. I defy anyone to not like any number of recipes with just a simple sauteed meunière, which is one of the first recipes in the book. Just a little salt and pepper, dust in flour, saute in a little oil and butter mixture, pour a little brown butter over the top. I mean, there's nothing not to like. I've enjoyed, you know, making believers out of people, and I think people are much more adventurous in trying new species than they were, you know, 20 or 30 years ago.Suzy Chase: So, you're an avid diver and spearfisher, and you even have a recipe for ceviche lionfish in this cookbook. Describe this.Tenney Flynn: Well it's a very simple ceviche. I don't like the kind where, you know, it's highly acidic and sort of tastes pickled. So this particular recipe is basically half lime juice, half orange juice, a little shallot, a little salt, a little hot chili. And then I smash the fish out flat. Lionfish is a very tender fish. It's rather neutrally flavored. And then just sort of pour that sauce over it, let it sit for a minute or two, rather than, you know, letting it sit in the acid for long, long periods of time. We also have a deep-fried lionfish recipe in there that's very, very good. It's a great fish that lends itself to a quick saute and tempura-frying very, very handily. And then sticking them is considered good citizenship. You're supposed to kill everyone you see, and the only way to harvest them so far is recreational divers hand-spearing them.Suzy Chase: Where can you find them?Tenney Flynn: They're basically, they're moving up the East Coast. They're good at depths that humans can't go to. They can't take anything much under 50 degrees, so that's going to keep them out of New York, probably. They're very adaptable. They have 14 venomous spines that surround their body. They're beautiful fish. You might've seen them in aquariums. They're aquarium escapees. They're not native to this hemisphere. And they escaped, and they eat everything, and nothing eats them. A couple of months ago, there was a lionfish rodeo in the Florida panhandle. They got 15,000 fish.Suzy Chase: So your roots are in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Tell me about your father's restaurant.Tenney Flynn: Well, it's... even the name of my father's restaurant is unusual in 2019, but you have to realize this was the '60s. It was a different world. It was still a segregated society, and it was called The Plantation Restaurant. There were also, in Atlanta at that time, there was Mammy's Shanty, Aunt Fanny's Cabin, Pittypat's Porch. I mean, it was a genre of restaurants. And, you know, having gotten past that, the restaurant itself was this giant, sprawling entity, and we fried enough chicken to fill the Superdome. Part of it was family dining, and then there was another side of it that... It was a dry county, which meant that there was no alcohol sold anywhere there, but you could get a state charter that enabled you to have a private club. You could sell liquor, you know, to the club members. So that was kind of an unusual thing at the time, and that end of the restaurant was more of a chop house kind of menu, slightly more upscale. But I started working in the kitchen there when I was about nine years old and worked in the kitchen until I was 15. I wanted to go out on the floor and make tips. And then I started working as service bar when I was 16, because nobody could see me.Suzy Chase: Tell me about GW Fins, where you cook now.Tenney Flynn: GW Fins is a fine-dining seafood restaurant kind of on a steakhouse frame. We just started our 18th year in the French Quarter. Even at 18 years, we're always going to be the new guy on the block, because we're across the street from Arnaud's, which is 100 years old, and around the corner on the other side of the block from Galatoire's, which I think is about 105 years old. It's a modern restaurant. It's a big space with a big warehouse space. We have about 220 seats, and since I had spent 10 years in the steakhouse business, it's not real surprising that the kitchen design was kind of modeled after a steakhouse. We don't use heat lamps or plate covers. There's a lot of open space, so all the food has to come up and go out immediately. So we use a timing system, kind of like a steakhouse. And fish is, you know, when it's cooked to point, when it's ready to go, it has to go. We drop first course in five minutes and entrees in 20 minutes, and the cooks are all cooking for that 20 minutes. We typically have 12 to 14 fin fish on the menu. As I mentioned, 70% of those come out of the Gulf of Mexico, and we have a variety of preparations. Very little fried stuff. I deep-fry softshell crabs. I think that's the way to do them. And we have some fried garnishes, but most... it's pretty much divided between sauteed, wood-grilled, broiled. And the executive chef, Mike Nelson, has been with me for 14 years. He's been executive chef for the last two years. He's a very inventive cat. He's much more creative than I am, and we've evolved some of the simple items over the years. We've done a kitchen remodel. We're able to do some things we couldn't do before. So it's a pretty exciting kitchen, and one of the most exciting things about it is that we print the menu every day about four o'clock. We receive all our fish in the whole state, and we kick them back, and we call up, and, you know, it's... We still reject a lot of fish from people we've been buying from since we've opened, because we look at every fish, and they buy it in vats. Everyone always sends us the best of what they have. We have full-time butchers every day, and Chef Mike has kind of made it his shtick to go nose to tail. One reason is respecting the animal. He's really done some very, very interesting things with using whole whole carcasses.Suzy Chase: John T. Edge, author of The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South, wrote about how you talked trash fish early on. What is trash fish?Tenney Flynn: Just an under-utilized species that people don't, you know... it's sort of out of their comfort zone, their field of knowledge. We'll buy anything, you know, that we can, by-catch, small amounts of things, and things we've never heard of before. We had conger eel the other day. I'd never tasted conger eel.Suzy Chase: What's that?Tenney Flynn: It was just a huge sea eel. The bone structure was challenging, but the meat was really, really good.Suzy Chase: So when you see something like conger eel that you've never seen before, what does that mean?Tenney Flynn: Well, it's just the... I mean, the ocean is full of, you know, thousands and thousands of different species, and these are things that are caught... By-catch just means it was caught accidentally. You know, they're targeting one species, and then they caught another. They don't usually want that, because they have to stop and throw it over the side. And long as it's fresh, we'll buy it. We'll see what we can do with it. And that's a lot of fun.Suzy Chase: Let's talk about conservation. You say think sustainable, buy domestic. As a home cook, what sort of fish should I be buying at the grocery store, and what should I stay away from?Tenney Flynn: Well, different states have different laws governing country of origin. In general, all the way across the board, the United States has good fishery laws. You know, nobody likes regulations. The commercial fishermen don't like them, the recreational fishermen don't like them, the various green groups don't like them. Nobody is perfectly happy with the regulatory process, but that's why we have a healthy fish population. And I've been diving places that either had no rules or the rules were not enforced, and there's no fish. There's a seafood contest here every year where chefs from coastal... actually 25 or 30 states, so I think there was some freshwater fish involved, too. Anyway, there was a chef from Guam whose dish was parrot fish, and I've dove in Guam, and the only reason anybody eats parrotfish is they've eaten everything else. I was a little bit perturbed at that. Certainly in BVI, in Honduras, they have very lax or easily-circumvented regulations.Suzy Chase: While I was looking through the cookbook for something to cook, I saw on Page 133 that you have a recipe for frog legs. I just can't understand the appeal. Please explain.Tenney Flynn: I don't understand what your objection to them is. Do you like... Are they cute little frogs, or are they gross frogs, or why don't you like frogs?Suzy Chase: I just can't imagine, first of all, that there's any meat on the leg. It just seems like... how many frog legs do you have to eat to get a decent amount of meat for, let's say, an appetizer?Tenney Flynn: Well, the ones I prefer are pinky finger sized, so I'd give you about six or eight of them, or about three or four pairs. The ones that are thumb and first knuckle or the base of your thumb sized you have to cook a little bit longer. You have to braise them. I think in the book, too, I talk about a particular customer that I cooked frog legs for who also cooked a lot of other much weirder stuff than frog legs, which is... recently passed away, mac Rebennack, Dr. John. He was convinced to the core of his being that the reason why he was alive and kicking was he only ate wild food.Suzy Chase: Well, he's not alive and kicking anymore, so I don't know.Tenney Flynn: He was a 77-year-old rock 'n' roll musician that shot heroin for 40 years, so that's like dog years with... for the normal population.Suzy Chase: Yeah, he had a good run.Tenney Flynn: And we love our characters in New Orleans, and he certainly was one.Suzy Chase: On Saturday night, I made your recipe for shrimp sauteed in barbecue butter with goat cheese grits and warm sourdough bread to sop up all the buttery goodness. Describe this dish.Tenney Flynn: Well, calling it barbecue shrimp is in New Orleans thing. It's not really barbecued, but it's a... And our recipe is a compound butter, which makes it easier to standardize the level of seasoning. So you get domestic shrimp, season them, saute them lightly, deglaze with a little beer, and then mount this compound butter in there to make the creamy sauce, and then dip your bread in, and eat them up. How did you enjoy it?Suzy Chase: It was amazing. And I don't like grits, I have to admit, but the goat cheese brought it to a whole different level.Tenney Flynn: Well, I think hominy grits, the long-cook variety, it's a neutral medium, and you can... There's a recipe in the book for a risotto made with the pozole instead of rice, kind of a riff on some stuff that I ate in Oaxaca, and that's the... Dried pozole ground up is grits, and that's the same flavor that's in your corn tortillas, your taco chips. You know, it's a underlying flavor in a tremendous amount of Mexican cuisine.Suzy Chase: So how was it working with Susan Puckett?Tenney Flynn: Susan's a hoot. We're both from the South, which New Orleans is not really the South. It's kind of like the northernmost outpost of the islands. It's a whole lot more like Dominican Republic or Haiti than Mississippi or Alabama. Susan is from Mississippi. She's very Southern. She was the food editor of The Atlanta Journal, and we know lots and lots of people in common. And I think Susan is a much better cook than she was when we started. She tested a lot of the recipes, and that's a point, too, that that was a very tedious process. But these are all tested recipes for the home cook. I think if somebody goes to the trouble and expense of buying the cookbook and buying the ingredients for the recipe and if they follow the recipe, you know, it should work. And there's certainly a lot of untested recipes out there that don't work, so hopefully all these do, you know, and they're... you follow the steps, you'll come up with a good result.Suzy Chase: Now to my segment this season called "My Favorite Cookbook." Aside from this cookbook, what is your all-time favorite cookbook and why?Tenney Flynn: There's a canning, pickling, and preserving cookbook that I use a lot called Putting Food By, which is a reference book that I use a lot. And a lot of books I just like to read for... not so much for recipes but just for, you know, the stories and the... and that's why I enjoy putting stories in our book.Suzy Chase: Where can we find you on the web and social media?Tenney Flynn: Chef Tenney, T-E-N-N-E-Y, at Facebook and GWFins.comSuzy Chase: You've shown us that cooking fish can be as easy as frying an egg. Thanks so much for coming on Cookery by the Book podcast.Tenney Flynn: Well, thanks so much for having me. I can't wait to listen to myself.Outro: Subscribe over on CookerybytheBook.com, and thanks for listening to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book.

Amy Klocuchar (MN): For the last two years, Senator Lankford and I, on a bipartisan bill with support from the ranking and the head of the intelligence committee; have been trying to get the Secure Elections Act passed. This would require backup paper ballots. If anyone gets federal funding for an election, it would require audits, um, and it would require better cooperation. Yet the White House, just as we were on the verge of getting a markup in the rules committee (getting it to the floor where I think we would get the vast majority of senators), the White House made calls to stop this. Were you aware of that? Attorney General William Barr: No. Sen. Amy Klocuchar (MN): Okay, well that happened. So what I would like to know from you as our nation’s chief law enforcement officer if you will work with Senator Lankford and I to get this bill done? Because otherwise we are not going to have any clout to get backup paper ballots if something goes wrong in this election. Attorney General William Barr: Well, I will… I will work with you, uh, to, uh, enhance the security of our election and I’ll take a look at what you’re proposing. I’m not familiar with it. Sen. Amy Klocuchar (MN): Okay. Well, it is the bipartisan bill. It has Senator Burr and Senator Warner. It’s support from Senator Graham was on the bill. Senator Harris is on the bill and the leads are Senator Lankford and myself, and it had significant support in the house as well. Hearing: Committee on Oversight and Reform:Strengthening Ethics Rules for the Executive Branch, February 6, 2019 Watch on Youtube *28:00 Rep Jordan (OH): 2013 we learned that the IRS targeted conservative for their political beliefs during the 2012 election cycle systematically for a sustained period of time. They went after people for their conservative beliefs, plan in place, targeted people. They did it. The gross abuse of power would have continued, if not for the efforts of this committee. 2014 the Obama Administration doubled down and attempted to use the IRS rule making process to gut the ability of social welfare organizations to participate in public debate. Congress has so far prevented this regulation from going into effect, but HR 1 would change that. Hearing: Judiciary Committee For The People Act Of 2019, January 29, 2019  Witness: Sherrilyn Ifill - President and Director-Counsel, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Watch on YouTube 32:00 Sherrilyn Ifill: Well before the midterm election, in fact, Georgia officials began placing additional burdens on voters, particularly black and Latino voters, by closing precincts and purging. Over half a million people from the voter rolls the voter purge, which removed 107,000 people, simply because they did not vote in previous elections and respond to a mailing was overseen by the Republican candidate for governor Brian Kemp, who was also the secretary of state. LDF and a chorus of others called on him to recuse himself from participating in the election. But he refused.  ______________________________________________________ Community Suggestions See Community Suggestions HERE.
